Good DVD drive, no good DVD player
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased a new Dell Inspiron laptop with Windows 10, and as most new laptops it didn’t include a DVD drive. I purchased this external USB drive, plugged it in to a USP port and voila, the computer recognizes the DVD drive. Then I inserted the included DVD and installed its software, which just happens to include DVD player software. Installation went smoothly. Long story short... The external drive was able to read and run the included software DVD, but was unable to play a new out-of-the-box DVD movie. I was able to watch the movie on a Sony DVD player connected to a Sony TV; so the problem wasn’t the media. Who to blame? Maybe Windows 10, maybe the DVD drive.

It takes its power from the computer's usb port, so it needs to be connected in order to open or close the tray (i.e. you can't get your disc out if it's not connected to your machine.) I'm working on a Linux-based system, and I did have to hunt down and install some extra proprietary codecs to play some discs. Other than that, no problems.

I have successfully been able to burn cds with it, aswell as watching movies with it on my computer. Just be sure to download a realiable media player on your pc when using this! It is compatible with the windows media player.
