DURABLE but performance is handicapped w/ 8GB RAM

Having reviewed many Windows based laptops over the past few years I continue to be amazed Moore’s Law continues. Premium features from prior years trickle down to mid level and even entry level products, while the prices offer more affordability unheard of such a short time ago. This machine follows in similar fashion, adding fingerprint scanner, tablet mode, etc. While There is much to like with this new offering from Dell, it is not without a few complaints. First up for me is the build quality surpassed the competition and many fragile laptops I have owned that always seem to exhibit damage after an accident or two. This machine is Uber sturdy and solid, in fact it survived a fall from a patio chair while charging (battery life could be better btw) to a hard wooden deck after my dogs were alerted to a chipmunk or squirrel in the back yard. Fearing my new laptop might have cracked screen, dented casing, picked it up and not a scratch nor ding. Wow, Off to a great start. The more I used it however some of the compromises made an appearance. The fingerprint scanner is great, … when it works, but I found myself entering my pin more than I hoped. Sometimes it unlocked immediately, while other times I submissed in frustration, re-adjusting my grip and index finger placement. All of my other Windows laptops are intel based, so this was my first Ryzen processor. For basic email and web browsing most students would likely need nothing more. However I feel the performance is hindered considerably with anything more computational;, compiling code, graphics rendering, even audio processing using Overloud TH-U amp simulator showed signs of strain. Some of this I blame on the paltry 8 GB RAM instead of 16 GB available in competitor products at the same or lesser price points. I am not sold on AMD integrated graphics, nor integrated in general, favoring Nvidia graphics cards with powerful coprocessors and high expectations. I also took slight issue with the Trackpad, while large it feels clunky. I am accustomed to gentle tap to activate (disclaimer : MacBook user). This requires much firmer press, something I’m sure I could acclimate to , so discount the awkwardness in my particular use-case. Having reviewed what some consider a dim OLED screen on another model, I expected this non-Oled to be much brighter. I was sadly mistaken. Using it in a lit controlled media room was fine, but outdoor usage my experience was challenging. After iPad tablet went into thermal protection playing simple video poker, switch over to the Dell right? This was frustrating, largely the limited 250 nits brightness (half or quarter what others offer) and somewhat the glare that I usually don’t fret over. On the bright side (pun :) this machine did not overheat despite the midnight blue color. Specs *8 GB RAM *512 GB SSD *AMD Ryzen 5 proc *14-inch touch screen *1920x1080 video resolution Pros + sturdy + durable + fingerprint scan + backlit keyboard + tablet responsiveness + dual-purpose function keys -F1 Mute -F2 Vol - -F3 Vol + -F4 Media Play Pause -F5 Backlit keys (3 levels) -F6 Screen dim -F7 Screen bright -F8 Secondary Screen mgmt -F9 (unassigned) -F10 Print Screen -F11 Home -F12 End + upgradeable RAM + upgradeable SSD + large trackpad + midnight blue color beautiful Cons -only 8 GB RAM -screen brightness -dim display appears dull -not OLED w/ better blacks -weight nearly 4 lbs -lack of eARC for AVR / TV -lack of Face ID unlock (software?) -2009 HDMI 1.4 vs 2017 HDMI 2.1 -limited display resolution 1920x1080 -short throw travel keys -fingerprint sensor sensitivity -trackpad clunky, hard presses -like all DELL PCs, pre-installed McAfee software Conclusion *This DELL Inspiron is a solidly built machine, making to a jack of all trades, unfortunately master of none. While a bit on the heavy side, it remains a portable option with a decent balance for general computing tasks; students, less delicate youth, construction workers, and similar trades. However anything more than basic usage the shortcomings will become more apparent. Heavy duty power users, content creators, to performance seeking users will like;y benefit far more from the upper end of Dell’s or others lineups, with intel chips, dedicated graphics, and 16 GB RAM minimum. These machines will likely include a brighter OLED display with much more visual *pop* too making them a better long term bargain. Recommendation : Buy if durability supersedes performance needs, others pass.

The Dell Inspiron 14 2-in-1 Touch-Screen is a must! When you first receive the product, it includes the laptop, of course, an extensive black charger, and it is secured in wrapper. The laptop itself is a smooth grey and is a great size to travel around with. It is not too bulky nor is it too fragile where you would worry for. When starting the Dell Inspiron 14, all you need to do is entering your preferred language, connect to the wi-fi, create a password, and enter your Outlook account (if you have an existing account on another device, it just transfers everything to the Dell). One thing to note, I am not too sure if it’s the newer generation of technology, but you cannot skip on whether to enter your card information for the subscription the laptop comes with. I considered it to be very frustrating because it seemed so unnecessary. It practically forced me to enter my information. That was my only issue with the product. The screen is nice for the price. Comparing it to the desktop I own, it is identical and such great quality. I tested it out by watching silly music videos and was amazed by how clear each video was. The sound of the Dell Laptop is great as well. It is not static whatsoever and has a great sound to it. I loved listening to music on the laptop and was especially loud on the highest volume I was able to put it on. The touchscreen is such a great addition. Though it is much common to have a touchscreen nowadays, it is great to have unlike other products on the market right now. I think for the price range and the quality of the laptop, this is a great first buy for any college student. Almost every university or college uses Office, and having it already implemented into the laptop is a plus. I cannot say much for how much it can last without it lagging on me just yet. Overall, I consider this to be a great product for young adults, and a must for students in 2024!

This Dell - Inspiron 14 2-in-1 Touch Laptop - AMD Ryzen(TM) 5 8640HS processor - 8 GB Memory - 512 GB SSD - Midnight Blue is great starter multitasking computer. It is great for work for Emails, web browsing, word, excel, etc.... Setup was super easy. Took about 1 hour to download all of the windows updates and firmware and I was up and running. The dual use of touch screen and regular laptop is great... Easy to browse pinch zoom pick things etc.. Size is nice and compact but big enough to not have to squint to look at the screen. Also keyboard layout is nice enough for medium size hands. Size is also easy to put in a bag or backpack to tote around. I benchmark and it came back per spec. No surprise. Dell's products historical perform to what they say. I have owned many Dell PCs over the years. I did not run my heavy graphics game but i would guess it would run ok. Not ideal with the smaller screen. Transfer speeds for USB A and C are super fast. Wifi pegged based on my wifi. Charger was different for me. The light on the computer only lights up when. The laptop charges. If battery is 100% it won't light up and charge. Some type of over charge protection. Which is great. That means battery life will be prolonged. A lot of connections from SD card, HDMI, to dual headphones and mic jack etc. Just missing an RJ45 jack. But that usually requires more space and they already packed a lot of stuff in the computer. Screen is vibrant and clear and crisp. Color of midnight blue is nice. Has sort of a metallic look. As always Dell great job on this Inspiron. With all the benefits and features and slick look I would recommend this PC for what it is advertised for.

Dell Rating: 4.5/5 The Dell is a compact powerhouse that perfectly balances portability and performance. With its stunning 13.4-inch near-borderless display, lightweight design, and long-lasting battery, it’s ideal for students, professionals, and travelers. The build quality is excellent, with a premium aluminum chassis that feels solid and stylish. Performance is snappy for everyday tasks and light productivity, thanks to the Intel Core i5processor and 16GB RAM. The keyboard is comfortable for typing, and the touchpad is smooth and responsive. However, it has limited ports (just USB-C), which might be inconvenient for some users. Overall, the Dell delivers a top-tier ultrabook experience in a sleek, compact

For the money this computer is great. Touchscreen, backlit keyboard and fast processor for under $400. The only complaint was that out of the box the camera( like others have mentioned) was inoperable. Computer could not recognize there even a camera installed. After waiting for about an hour online for tech support from Microsoft, a technician struggled for about 45 minutes trying to get it to work before finally resolving the issue. I would have never been able to fix that issue on my own. Due to that inconvenience I am only giving it 4 stars but happy with everything else to this point.

Good laptop , strangely the best performance mode saves you more battery than balanced mode. Condition was perfect. worth it to buy renewed. for the price point ,display is the only thing you kinda have to compromise on.

I’m always skeptical of entry level laptops, but this laptop was full of surprises! First, it features a really solid, metal backed case that feels extremely sturdy. The hinges are very durable and easily allows you to flip the laptop over into tablet mode. The display has a very clear, sharp imagine, with great lighting dispersion. The graphic processing power is okay, but nothing to get excited about. I do love that it has AMD processor with Radeon graphics, as I’ve always been a big fan of both of these. The SSD is phenomenal, it operates abnormally fast and makes boot up time almost instant. The SSD performed the best out of all the benchmark I ran, and it was noticeable throughout normal use. The sound is shockingly good, it has a stereo feel, and great projection and clarity, even at high levels. The keyboard is incredibly comfortable. The keys have a soft feel to them, but also a satisfying click and feedback as you press them down. My favorite feature of the entire laptop is that it uses a USB-C port for charging! This is so huge for me, because you can find a USB-C at any store which sells electronics. The power brick supplied by Dell is 65 watts, but, you can still charge this laptop with lesser watts. I have a 50 watt power brick for my Samsung laptop, and while it won’t offer maximum performance when plugged in, it will still charge this laptop! Overall, I’m pretty thrilled with this computer. It’s a perfect entry level computer, and I think it’s a great step up from a chrome book if you have a kid who is looking to move into a laptop. My son is going into 4th grade and has taken a big interest in this laptop. He loves the size, the touchsceeen, the tablet mode, and that it can play Minecraft!

Been a year since I got this laptop (open_box Excellent). It works well overall for my use, or rather for my kids for attending their online extra curricular classes (zoom/google meet) and occasional use of photoshop and web browsing. The keyboard layout is horrible though with the power button next to the delete key. The power button in unmarked, had no backlight (unlike other keys) and is configured to put the laptop to sleep out of the box. Since this is an open_box, I had some issues initially where I needed to do hard restarts a few times, but every time I press the power button, it would just go to sleep. Was pretty troublesome until I just disabled that button completely. Bios is configures to charge up the laptop to 80% and start charging when battery is depleted to 40%. Overall battery life is OK for my use where it is mostly plugged in. Still have issues sometimes where the laptop would freeze or just hang on the "Dell" screed while restarting without moving forward. Would reconsider buying open_box in future.

This is the second laptop I buy. I bought one for my cousin and now for my brother. My cousin kept talking about how good and durable it is. Battery last long. Beautiful color and excellent display. The only flaw which I don’t think is a problem the fan gets loud while charging but turns off right when unplug it. Perfect for it’s price, honestly it’s a catch!!
