Great laptop for what I need

I purchase my Dell to replace my previous Inspiron which has the LCD damaged due to a fall.
I like my new laptop because it has what I need, even more. What It is not the best for me is the weight. I was expecting, being a newer model, to have less weight.
I know it was my choice (there are lighter laptops but also more expensive), so overall I'm satisfied with it.
Great price for their characteristics!!!

Upon starting I got a virus message when I opened google chrome saying my computer was locked for my safety and also I get the blue screen of death sometimes, crashing my computer and restarting it. I bought one that was “certified by geeksquad” or so I thought. It is a little slow at first but when I got it up and running it was decent. I really like the backlit keyboard and pretty I just got a lemon. Will return to store hopefully for a better one or my money back. Also it had spots on it that could’ve been cleaned by the “geek squad” but that doesn’t affect the performance. It’s also very quiet. Screens not the brightest and the speakers aren’t that great tbh with you.

A Solid Laptop for Students

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
Construction & Design: The laptop is fairly heavy due to it's robust chassis. It has a sharp looking brushed metal finish and it feels like it will hold up well over time, which is important for a laptop. 15'' for me is the perfect size for a laptop. It's small enough to fit in any backpack but not so small that I can't see what I'm doing. It's very thin for a "budget" laptop, and definitely looks like it cost more than it did. It also has a touch screen which comes in handy more often than you would think.
Notable Specs:
CPU Ryzen 5 2500U 2.00GHz W/ Vega GFX
RAM: 8.00 GB
HDD 1 TB 5400
Performance: It's important to consider what you want to do with a computer before you buy one. In this case, it's an ideal, affordable laptop for students or casual users. A gaming laptop this is not. However, Less demanding titles like Overwatch or Fortnite will run on low settings well enough. The 15" Display is big enough for a good Netflix binge as well. Performance wise, for normal use (Internet browsing, YouTube, Word, etc...) This laptop performs just fine. just keep in mind the lack of SSD means that your start up times are going to take a little longer. about 8-10 seconds or so. Battery life is also pretty good and will definitely last through a days worth of classes or coffee shop blogging.
Features: The keyboard has white back-lighting which is great for working in low light conditions and I also appreciate that they included a ten key as well. The laptop also has Bluetooth, a decent webcam, 3USB ports, an HDMI out, and a SD card reader.
Overall: This laptop isn't going to blow the roof off the place but it's not really meant to be that kind of machine. I think it's a great choice for college students or PC users that don't require a ton of power under the hood to do their daily work. The Chassis is thin, sleek, and surprisingly rugged. The lack of SSD means there will be some load times occasionally, again this largely depends on what you are doing with it. For the average user though, considering the price for performance and reliability, this is a great laptop.

Great all-arounder | From Reddit to LoL

A little bit about myself: grad student, casual gamer, and a(very) amateur photographer. I am gonna come right out and say it: for the money, you would be hard pressed to find a better all-around laptop for a person in my same situation. AMD is crushing the game and gives me all the CPU/GPU I need at this price point.
This laptop replaced my 2012 Dell Inspiron 1500, and honestly, that thing is still kicking with no signs of slowing down, so I have a lot of faith in the reliability of this new one. ON TO THE REVIEW!
PHYSICAL FEEL: This is a "heavy" laptop - not in the sense that you are going to have tired shoulders from carrying it around, but it definitely isn't a chromebook(and that's a good thing). I like the heft, and the fact that it feels extremely sturdy. Handling the laptop is a lot like closing the door of a really nice car vs the tin-can doors of a Honda Civic. The brushed aluminum looking finish also looks stellar and doesn't leave smudges.
PERFORMANCE: I use laptops for three things and three things only.
1. Browsing the internet: I spend all of my time on YouTube and Reddit. Guess what - it's 2018 and every laptop made this year can handle both of those things. YouTube plays in a crisp 1080p without issue, and it never has any issues while I'm browing /r/prequelmemes.
2. Playing games: when I say "games" what I really mean is League of Legends. Yes, I know, I'm old-school cool. I open up my laptop, fire up LoL, lock in my main man Garen, and spin to win.
3. Photoshop/Lightroom: I take a lot of pictures - mostly of my cats. I like to make them fancy with photoshop and lightroom. This laptop handles these tasks without issue. I rarely shoot in RAW, but when I do I have no lag when editing.
4. ??? I guess I use it for school sometimes too.
BATTERY LIFE: The battery life is good. Obviously battery life is going to depend on what you are using it for. I can't say that I have found myself trying to play games for 8+ hours without access to power, but it can last about that long when writing essays for school.
RELIABILITY: I haven't owned it for long, but I have been a long-time user of Dell Inspiron laptops and I have zero complaints about the long-term reliability.
TL;DR - Dope laptop for not a lot of money. It also has a NUM pad, which I like.

The screen is OK and full HD 1080.
Nice and speedy but can do better with an SSD which you can install and still keep the existing old school 1TB HDD. Be sure to get an M.2 PCIe hard drive and not a M.2 SATA SSD as the PCIe drives are much faster. I ordered an Samsung 970EVO 500Gb hard drive for 112.00 from New Egg and will install it when it arrives. Worth the 450.00 that I paid on sale.

I'm a Red Team reviewer and I'm very excited to see an AMD offering by Dell; however, my views and anything I post here are completely my own. With that out of the way, I had the opportunity to test out this specific model and I'm glad I did.
First of all, I'm not going to blow smoke up your rear and say that this is fit for any specific task like gaming, video editing, office work etc - the beauty of this model is that it can certainly do all the above but don't expect 4K gaming, or video editing faster than a dedicated system! At this budget price, you're really getting a great system which I can back up with numbers (see images attached). I ran various tests to simulate office tasks (video conferencing, POV RAY animation, image editing, running spreadsheets, documents and more) for a few hours on end! See results in the pictures attached.
The keyboard has a nice silent tactile click with surprisingly enough room between the keys - even with the numpad included. As with most Dell displays, at 1920x1080p it's crisp and clear, even in a very bright room or outdoors - the touch screen is also very responsive to gestures/pinching etc. The overall laptop closed is less than an inch thick and weighs less than 5 lbs with a very small power brick that can easily be tucked away. Another convenience point for me!
This incredibly priced laptop may not be the next super computer you'll own for under $500 but it's well worth having as a convenient mobile workstation. Think college work, business trips, or even for family in far away places. You get my drift, it's a perfect budget laptop that's packed with enough power to get the job done.

This laptop is a good purchase if you are looking for a laptop that is for everyday use. It has a big storage capacity and an 8gb of ram. Also can handle some light games. Touch screen and good speaker is a plus. And also a product of dell, a respectable brand that made premium computers.

I've only had this for a few days, but the experience so far with this laptop is pretty solid. My (and many others) only complaint is with the HDD. It's noisy and slow. I had an old 256GB 850 Evo to spare so I cracked open a portable drive for the USB 3.0 adapter and began cloning the drive. Took about 1.5 hrs with Samsung's migration tool and it was all set for installation. Another simple task provided you take your time with the case opening.
Now it flies. Boot times are a quick few seconds, and it's so much quieter. The laptop's fan is surprisingly quiet on its own - I didn't actually know if it was still functioning at first.
Battery life and the screen could be better, but for an everyday laptop that I gave <$500 for after tax, I couldn't be happier.

Great Notebook with SUBPAR Hard Drive

Most of the reviews on this laptop are correct. I can make 2 recommendations after buying, upgrading, and using my notebook.
1) If you plan to just use this right out of the box, then don't buy it. The hard drive bogs down this computer to badly that I never did get it to download all of the Microsoft Updates (part of that problem is the Microsoft servers). This hard drive is the WORSE I have ever used.
2) If you want a great machine and have a little experience with computers, then get a Solid State Drive and 16GB of memory and upgrade this machine. I used a M.2 NVMe Solid State stick drive, 16GB of memory (8 in each slot), and another SATA Solid State box drive, reloaded the computer, and it runs like a rocket. Did ALL of the Microsoft Updates in about 5 hours, and I am now using it an enjoying this machine. The keyboard is back-lit, the WiFi/Bluetooth works well, it has a good touch-screen display, and is not all that heavy. Plus, you have DELL'S great service to back you up with good support.
At this price point, you cannot find a better notebook with all these features and quality. But if you cannot upgrade at least the hard drive, then you will be miserable and want to throw this computer against a wall. Once again, the WORSE Hard Drive on the planet. So get one, let Geek Squad install an SSD and you will be a happy camper.

Perfect CPU with the Worst Hard Drive Ever
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
Replace the hard drive with a SSD and you're good to go. The Ryzen 5 2500U can handle anything for a laptop (4 cores 8 threads, something Intel still cannot offer even close to this price for a laptop).
Unfortunately, the hard drive is a piece of garbage; not surprised considering Dell has designers who have no idea how to pair hardware. How bad can it really be?
Crystal diskmark gives a meager 103 MB/s for sequential read and write, but the random read writes, the stuff that makes your computer "feel fast"? 0.7 MB/s....in all tests. It's pathetic. To put this in perspective, the first generation XBox 360's 20 Gigabyte hard drive performed about 12 times faster than this. I have no clue how Dell could have found such a basement variety hard drive, but they did, and it completely ruins the best laptop CPU (it's an APU technically) you could get for the money.
I would only recommend this laptop if you are willing to clone the drive on it onto a SSD. Solved all my problems.

I had a list of things that were important to me on a laptop. I wanted a good amount of memory, touch screen, backlit keys, at least 15 inch screen and runs fast. This laptop is this and so much more. I was looking for a HP, but I love this Dell. Have had it for 2 months and use it all the time, more than desktop.

Works well with Ubuntu Linux 18.10, running off of a 500gb Samsung M.2 NVMe SSD.
The processor and GPU are amazingly fast, considering price.
The screen is quite poor in terms of contrast and viewing angles. Speakers and also poor.
Keyboard is back-lit, and quite decent.
Battery life on Linux is about 4 hours (typing, watching).
Overall an ok buy for my needs, easy to carry, not too heavy.
I put a detailed review on reddit, you can find it there. It has all the Linux install details.

Very nice and easy to use. Did crash on me once but I have been using it alot that day so the driver just gave out, but that was only one time, I'd definitely recommend. The price was great for the ryzan 5 and the graphic card. Witch is very good with the 8 GB ram, perfect for browsing multitasking like businesses use would need

This mother board supports the m.2 ssd which is 400% faster than a standard ssd. I looks like a memory chip and connects to the board. Also the Ryzen 5 2nd gen, which this is, has been tested to be 50 to 100% better for gaming than the I5 with intel graphics. It's not a high end gaming machine but it plays most games very well. Definitely worth it over the I5.

I think the CPU and RAM are enough for daily use.
The battery is enough for daily use for 2-3 hrs heavy use (watch video/light gaming) or 6-7 hrs light use(word/excel edit and idle). which is pretty average in Ryzen CPU laptop.
The screen is TN panel which pretty sucks.
But the hard drive is pretty slow. Actually, it provides an extra NVME m.2 slot. Pretty fast if you plug in the m.2 SSD but it will slow the NVMe real speed for a little since it misses a key on m.2. Seriously, everyone who purchases this model without SSD version should upgrade it with SSD whatever Sata or NVMe or the system will be very slow.
But overall, a great product for only $399.(This is the price when I bought) but not worth for the original price.
