    An Excellent Film

Director Neill Blomkamp teams with producer Peter Jackson for this tale of extraterrestrial refugees stuck in contemporary South Africa. It's been 28 years since the aliens made first contact, but there was never any attack from the skies, nor any profound technological revelation capable of advancing our society. Instead, the aliens were treated as refugees. They were the last of their kind, and in order to accommodate them, the government of South Africa set up a makeshift home in District 9 as politicians and world leaders debated how to handle the situation. As the humans begin to grow wary of the unwelcome intruders, a private company called Multi-National United (MNU) is assigned the task of controlling the aliens. But MNU is less interested in the aliens' welfare than attempting to understand how their weaponry works. Should they manage to make that breakthrough, they will receive tremendous profits to fund their research. Unfortunately, the highly advanced weaponry requires alien DNA in order to be activated. When MNU field operative Wikus van der Merwe (Sharlto Copley) is exposed to biotechnology that causes his DNA to mutate, the tensions between the aliens and the humans intensifies. Wikus is the key to unlocking the alien's technology, and he quickly becomes the most wanted man on the planet. Ostracized and isolated, Wikus retreats to District 9 in a desperate bid to shake his dogged pursuers. I won't spoil the rest. I will say it is excellently acted by Sharlto Copley and Director Neill Blomkamp is a force to be reckoned with.. The story line is great and it addresses a lot of Society's flaws and prejudces and poverty. At first, the plot and characters in this movie seem quite bizarre, but it eventually becomes apparent that the movie is clearly and faithfully illustrating a theme which is natural to the human condition. That theme revolves around what happens when a minority group lives in the midst of a majority group, with the division into different and opposing groups being established based on their differences in ancestry, appearance, language, diet, and other cultural traits. The changes the main character goes through is shocking and unpredictable (as is the story). All in all, District 9 is an incredible science fiction film that features equal parts action and heart and works well on many different levels. The acting, story and milieu add up to a very excellent film. Special Features include: BD Exclusive: Joburg From Above: Satellite and Schematics of the World of District 9 - Interactive Map Director's Commentary Deleted Scenes The Alien Agenda: A Filmmaker's Log -- Three-Part Documentary Metamorphosis: The Transformation of Wikus Innovation: Acting and Improvisation Conception and Design: Creating the World of District 9 Alien Generation: Visual Effects God of War III Playable Playstation 3 Game Demo The Steelbook art is unique, simple in an intriguing way and overall is very well done.

I enjoyed the 4K release of this Sci-fi movie. The CGI looks great all around, and the HDR makes the colors truly pop off the screen.

"District 9" is one of those movies that somehow I'd never gotten around to watching despite being a big fan of science fiction movies. I can now see why Neill Blomkamp is so revered by SF movie fans. This manages to feel like such an original story while simultaneously being a very blunt depiction of human society. I'm reluctant to say more because I don't want to give away any plot points. What I will say though is that I'm actually GLAD that I never saw this movie until viewing this 4K presentation. For a movie that was shot documentary-style on HD cameras, this is one of the clearest and most detailed 4K UHD transfers that I've seen. It looks closer to a native 4K movie than movies actually filmed in 4K. Similarly, the Atmos track--particularly the subwoofer channel--is extremely active and engaging. Everything about this A/V presentation helps to pull viewers into the action. Definitely recommended!

Besides the awesome steelbook casing the movie itself on my particular bluray player (2012 model vizio) the movie literally took like 10 minutes to bring up the title screen... At first I thought the disc was defected so I returned not once but twice only to have the same problem... So I decided to try playing it on my ps4 and ps3 gaming systems which are bluray compatible only to have the same problem... The trailers play no problem but once you watch them all or choose to skip thru them the screen goes black thus me thinking that the disc were defected... But that wasn't the case at all... I then realized that each of my 3 bluray players are connected to the internet and this particular movie has a feature called "IMOVIE" or something to that affect which retrieves data from the internet and allows you (if you want) to view the movie using that feature (an icon appears in the corner of the t.v screen at random times and if you click it gives you behind the scenes info etc) which is really cool if one is interested in such... Now my older vizio bluray player does this but im sure ANY better brand of player or newer model player will not have this problem but I'm not 100% sure on that? All and all great movie and beautiful steelbook case for any collector!

District 9 - Pop Art Steelbook

This is my least favorite of the pop-art steelbook series - just in design, not the in quality of the film. The film is excellent in my opinion. A sleeper hit born from the ashes of the Halo film. Producer Peter Jackson was so impressed with the director, Neil Blomkamp, and his original story (District 9) that he decided to carry the production of the failed Halo film over to District 9. And with that bit of Hollywood drama, a great sci-fi film was born, as well as a future sci-fi auteur, in director Blomkamp. Unfortunately, his following films - Elysium and Chappie - while great looking films, show a flaw in director/writer Blompkamp - and that is his ability to tell a tale as intriguing as District 9 (written over the span of almost 6 years) isn't up to par for the fast paced world of producer-driven films in Hollywood. I think Blomkamp would do wonders depicting others screenplays (like Zack Snyder), or perhaps a great auteur filmmaker if he were to take time to perfect his screenplays before moving into production. But for now, District 9 will do as not only Blomkamp's greatest achievement, but a wonderful film that stands out on its own in the world of science fiction films.

In case you missed it, Neill Blomkamp's Science Fiction thriller from 2009 was both a critical and commercial success. The film was produced by Peter Jackson (co-writer and director of both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movie trilogies) . The film had a very modest budget of 30 million dollars which is next to nothing in modern movie making, let alone a special effects Sci-fi film about giant, alien-prawns who've become refugees on planet Earth after their starship is unable to return home. The aliens are concentrated together, heavily monitored and placed into shantytowns where the conditions are abysmal. That's where our story begins. I pride myself on never giving away spoilers. If you're a fan of this and have already seen this on Blu-ray, this 4K version is much better in picture and sound.

Loved this movie when it came out in theatres, and couldn't wait to get a copy of the Blu-Ray upon it's release. The Blu-Ray, in it's own right, is a good disc, but this 4K version is superior in every way. Detail in the costumes, sets, and especially the creatures are much imporved. The movie isn't particularly colorful, but the HDR usage here makes the colors pop and the black scenes are deep and inky. The new Dolby Atmos soundtrack is demo worthy..especially in the climactic action scenes. Is this version a reason to double-dip? Absolutely. It's a worthy upgrade in every way.

Taking a chapter from one of the darkest periods of South African history, Neill Blomkamp's District 9 is an insightfully weighty and masterfully told tale that remains just as entertaining a decade later. In fact, the inventively brilliant sci-fi actioner continues to surprise and feels all the more relevant and poignant today with its allegorical plot on systemic oppression and xenophobia. The sci-fi favorite crash lands on Ultra HD with an impressively beautiful 4K HDR10 presentation and a top-notch, reference-quality Dolby Atmos soundtrack, besting its Blu-ray counterpart. Although it doesn't really offer any new supplemental material to boast about, the overall UHD package is nonetheless highly recommended.

I haven't seen the movie in years so I had to jump on the black Friday deal. The picture Quality for me was just amazing. The shots that were supposed to look like older TV news broadcasts were spot on and the shots that were supposed to be live looked so crisp. I didn't see much if any grain in this film (not a grain hater though) and the graphics for the Prawns still looked as good as they ever did. It's such a fun movie you have to get it. As far as the audio I have a nakamichi 9.2.4 setup and it was a good mix. I didn't notice too much atmos going on but the overall experience was a blast. I only wish they would have made a sequel to this fantastic sci-fi classic.

this might sound like a joke to you, exaggerated maybe as well, but i did see this movie ...literally 9 times in the theater when i was in high school! its not a fresh air of a movie, but its a bunch of movie ideas put together into a great film! the alien designs and the cgi is FANTASTIC, it starts off as a documentary, its a little bit slow but as soon as "the thing" happens it starts picking up. and the action DOES NOT disappoint one bit. its surprisingly emotional too definitely pick this up! it even looks better on 4k

District 9 is an entertaining story where we get to see what is like to be judged by appearance and not by your true worth. Of course that appearance happens to be an alien life form, but that is for you to see for your self. Neill Blomkamp is a master of taking current events and putting a sci fi spin on it so we can learn and be entertained. Elysium and Chappie are the 2 other movies that are amazing. This 4K transfer is a must own and I hope that the other 2 are soon to follow.

I heard the hype about this movie, but it took a few years before I finally watched it. The wait was worth it and this movie blew me away, it's very awesome. A breakout debut from director Neill Blomkemp who I hoped would direct the Halo movie, but we may just have to settle for a pilot episode of the live action Halo Tv series due out in 2015. Do not miss this movie! Excellent for multiple viewings to really take in the multilayered aspects the movie covers about race, aliens, politics, compassion, etc.... A very happy customer who was able to snag the movie for only $5 Blu-Ray brand spanking new in store.

Part sci-fi film, part analogy of society in general. Aliens being treated like “aliens”. Prejudice, hatred on full display. A protagonist who doesn’t realize how privileged he is until he steps inside the shoes of the very creatures he despises. Definitely recommend this film. Probably Blomkamp’s best work. Also, the audio/video quality is top notch and the Steelbook case is a must have for any collector.

Just purchased a New Samsung 4K UHD 65" Q90T Q-LED TV and got a Samsung 4K UHD Blu-ray DVD player with a Samsung Q950T Surround Bar System and purchased this 4K UHD Movie as it is one of my many favorites. The ATMOS DTX surround sound and Picture are awesome! Like being in a Movie Theater, especially since theatres have been closed due to COVID-19. The 4K DVD was at a good price too during black Friday sales.
