If you watched this series on Amazon in years past, you'll have seen the High Res full version of the episodes as they are here in Blu-ray. Now that Amazon lost the rights to HBO, you CAN still buy the cloud based digital version on Amazon Prime BUT, they are NO LONGER these high res, full content versions!!! You will end up with the LOW RES very grainy episodes that have a lot of content trimmed for the US Audience (I believe to allow for more commercial time). If you buy the Standard Res Non Blu-ray DVDs, you get those same LOW RES versions that on a large HD TV are almost unwatchable.
For that reason, if you want a great picture and the FULL episodes as originally broadcast, you have to find a copy of THIS SET.
It was produced in 2013 and I am pretty sure it is out of print. You might find a listing for this set on Amazon, but there aren't any new ones available there and the price is much higher. Trust me, if these are still available here on Best Buy, Get them now before they are gone forever... You don't have a TARDIS. You cannot travel back in time to get them when they are no longer available.
Last, i'll say this, in the midst of this insane world wide pandemic and political unrest these days, watching the first episode "Rose" was the first big smile I've had in over a month.
Thank you for this Best Buy!

As someone who only just recently got into Doctor Who, I was happy to see this season on Blu-ray. Since it was filmed in SD, it has been upscaled to HD for this release; the picture quality is easily superior to that of the DVD release, and the audio has most definitely benefited from the jump from the DVD's Dolby Digital track to the Blu-ray's DTS-MasterHD track. I look forward to seeing series 2-4 released on Blu-ray sometime in the future. I know there are fans who gripe that since this season and also series 2-4 was filmed in SD that it doesn't need a Blu-ray release, but I disagree solely for the fact of the jump in audio quality (going from lossy DVD audio to uncompressed Blu-ray audio) and also for the inclusion of the original DVD bonus features as well. That being said, Christopher Eccelston is my least favorite doctor, so I was very happy to pick this season up for only $35. I don't think it's worth the full price of $67 due to the fact of it being upscaled picture and no new bonus material, but if you see it on sale it's definitely worth picking up and adding to, or starting, your Doctor Who Blu-ray collection.

Nine is by far my favorite doctor. It’s such a shame he didn’t more episodes. This is a great season, a great introduction to the modern Doctor Who series

Chris Eccleston's turn as the Doctor is often overlooked, but is really worth a view just to see how far the series has come. I personally am a fan of this season and recommend it to everyone starting out with Doctor Who. Although, most people who watch it have already seen this season. It's just great to finally have it on Blu-Ray without having to buy the really expensive box set. I do hope that they continue to release the other seasons like Tennant's run. It would be nice if they did it with the previous Doctors as well.

A welcome launch of the newer episodes now in HD

Newly available in HD, this is an upconversion because the first four series of the newer run were shot in standard definition. This is the relaunch of the series, also known as NuWho, bringing new audiences to the fold. It picks up after the long hiatus from the last new episode from 1996, continuing the mythos, but it stands alone for viewers who are unfamiliar with the show's history from 1963. Christopher Eccelston is an underrated Doctor, and fans have these episodes to thank for the starting point of Doctor Who becoming a worldwide phenomenon.

I had recently read that, since the transfer was from a standard definition source, the Blu-ray wouldn't be, in fact couldn't be, much better. Well, they need to look again. I put the Blu-ray into my Sony Blu-ray dvd player and wow, fantastic definition and color. Lets hope they do this for the David Tennant years as well. I highly recommend all 'Whovians" purchase this, you won't regret it one bit.

Been waiting a long time for Series 1-4 to be released individually on blu-ray! Not much into the "Ninth" Doctor, but still wanted this set. Okay transfer (weren't filmed in HD), but still a tad better looking then DVD. Really looking forward to the "Tenth" Doctor (David Tennant), which will be released on August 23!!!! Bring it on!!

Content is good, compression/quality is meh

It's understandable that the video quality is kind of meh because this was produced in a time before Blu-ray was a thing - and produced for TV, to boot, so the coding is necessarily different. It's not like today's digital filming and straight-to-release tactics. So for that part, there is no real appreciable difference between the dvd/Blu-ray versions of these episodes. In some areas the attempts to "upscale" are glaringly obvious and take away from it, but all in all - it's the best way to watch the first series in the US if you don't have Britbox or HBOMax or whatever else.

Knowing that this material was not shot in HD, I knew there would only be minimal improvements in the picture quality from the DVD I already owned, but it has a slightly sharper image as well as better color and contrast. The biggest improvement was in sound. The Blu-ray is clearly light years ahead of the DVD in the sound department. Definitely would recommend this purchase for any serious Doctor Who fan.

I got tired of figuring out which new streaming service had what license and decided to invest in the first few box sets of Doctor Who. While the special/practical effects used in this first series is very much circa 2009, the overall video quality is actually very good. It was great revisiting so many classic moments without worrying about bandwidth quality.

Doctor Who fans a probably already aware of the show, but it's worth pointing out that the * is for the picture quality. In case you weren't aware, the first four series (all of Eccleston and most of Tennant) were filmed in standard definition. The Blu-Rays for series 1-4 are up-converted standard definition, and accordingly won't look as good as later series. Series 1 is still a step up from the DVD set, but if you're expecting a mind-blowing upgrade, it might be important to keep your expectations in check. It's likely to look as good as it's ever going to.

Christopher Eccleston only did one season of the rebooted Doctor Who series but it was a great season. Rose was one of the best companions. I didn't know how they could top this Doctor, but then Tennant stepped in and wow. In my opinion this is one of the best all around seasons of the show. Glad to finally have it on bluray even if it's an upconversion. Fantastic!

I'm slowly building my collection. Finally glad to get the 1st series. i wish he would have stayed the Dr for a few more series but let's be honest, the next Dr.'s were fantastic. This series is good because it explains most things and allows you to get immediately involved into the story line without having to research the back story

Series One represents a return for Doctor Who as a regular series after 15 years and it is a great one at that. From his first meeting with Rose, to them meeting the Dalek, and so much more, this is a great stepping point in for anyone new to Doctor Who

It's Doctor Who. It's blu-ray. That's it. This set was previously only available in a box set containing series 1-7. And it was not cheap. They are finally releasing the earlier series' on blu-ray and they are now affordable. In my opinion, a must-own.

Of course, visually is an upgrade from DVD. The episodes are definitely "meh". Oh yeah, take time to set up your TV sound. Playing it through his sound bar did not work out so well. But that has to do with his audio set up. You get up to speed on what Doctor Who is all about in this one season...

I owned the first series on DVD but when Best Buy had a great sale, I had to check it out. Didn't think that the resolution jump would too great but was I wrong. Could clearly see the time vortex energy going back into the TARDIS in The Parting of the Ways. Solid extra features as well.

The first seriesof the new Doctor Who series is now available as an individual release where it was only available as a pricey box set of series 1-7. This isn't true blu-ray as this is an upconversion since series 1-4 weren't shot in HD, but it still looks great! Starring Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor.
