What's Old Is New (and Fun!) Again

Mixing in old school first person shooter (FPS) elements with modern, upgrade, RPG-like paths, DOOM is a rewarding experience. The graphics are fine and detailed even on the "lower" console version I bought and played. Runs great, simply put, no weird redrawing of the environment or stutters in the motion sequences. Controls are tight, feel great, and let you run headlong into a pack of demons and still be nimble enough to get some aimed shots off. Glory kills never got old for me and do serve their purpose to refill health, ammo, and even armor supplies at times. The upgrade system for DoomGuy (your character) , armor, runes, and weapons is deep, especially for a FPS. The levels are huge, but not unnecessarily so, as the way forward is more often than not clearly marked by various outlines and color indicators, but not obtrusively, either. Secret rooms and areas are DOOM staples, and they're all over the place here. They're very organic to the gameplay experience, as exploring those up can earn weapon upgrade tokens and the like. Exploration of the levels fits like a glove into the gameplay. Easter eggs abound, too, with references to classic Bethesda games and older id games and a lot of things in-between. The enemy AI is a bit lackluster at times, but they're not totally silly or dumb to me. Enemies do swarm in on you in classic Doom fashion, and that's a good thing. They have pretty solid aim too, so standing like a statue is ill-advised. Audio and sound effects are good for the most part. The soundtrack is a treat, the best parts being the re-working of various tracks from the original Doom into more modern, perhaps even "industrial" versions. Some weapon effects like grenades lacked the "thump" they should have, though. I can't believe I'm saying this, but even the lore and "story" have some interesting elements, especially how id approaches your introduction to DoomGuy and his role in this game in the first place. It's not over the top operatic, it just seems to fit. While people play this game to shoot demons, the few "story" bits in the game are well done. Haven't played multiplayer at all, so can't comment. Dabbled with SnapMap some, but not enough to create full-blown maps and levels. SnapMap seems like a robust level maker with relatively intuitive setups for most things that lets people build single-player, co-op, and multiplayer levels, though. Those who are Knee Deep in the Doom mod and .wad scene will find it lacking, though. Still, there are worse game level creation tools out there, and if SnapMap motivates a few future game devs it's more than a worthy addition. More games should have mod tools, period. To be honest, I'm fine just playing the single-player campaign and feel it's worth full price to me. Thumbs up, very fun game, hope to see more (ahem...Quake maybe??)

This is the modern retelling of the DOOM series. It is graphically stunning, moves at a clean crisp 60fps a second, and it is so fast moving you can feel your stomach churn from its sense of speed. It is gory, meaning when you engage creatures in this game, you will kill them in very violent ways. But this is part of the game play, as those kills provide bonus health and stamina to your character. All of the traditional DOOM weapons are present, from the shotgun to the BFG, but this time modern consoles give these weapons new life with improved animations and sounds. You also get FREE multiplayer maps as well as a map editor which has a strong community following. Some of the best maps the game offers have come from the community and their imaginations. This is a no-brainer purchase if you like FPS games or a fan of the DOOM series. You will not be disappointed.

Having played all of the other Doom games, I was wary of this release, but couldn't help myself. What a great purchase. This has been the best gaming purchase I have made since The Witcher 3. It is action packed, fun, and creative. The harder difficulty modes are where the game really shines. As for single player campaign mode, it is a ton of fun, but very light on the story. It doesn't have many cut-scenes or anything like that. If you want to get the story, you need to read the data files you collect throughout the game. Multiplayer: Nothing short of amazing. Fast, action packed, and fun. Sound: The music and enemies sounds give the game a great, creepy, frantic feel, which is perfect for someone battling the forces of He**! I loved this game and would recommend it for anyone. The violence, especially in the Glory Kill animations, is a bit over the top, so if you are concerned with what your kids see, this isn;t for them.

I remember playing the original DOOM on PC 20 years ago. It was a pioneer in the gaming industry. So I was excited to hear they finally came out with a new DOOM for current gen consoles. I'll keep this short. Single player campaign mode is a lot of fun. I would suggest turning the difficulty up a notch, as there are plenty of health + ammo packs around to give you a fighting chance. The story was actually interesting and engaging. Multi player/online was also fun. I wish there was more maps, but honestly once you get a good group of people on your team and you are running around picking up demon spawns, it gets exciting regardless of the map. There's decent replay value here too - beat the game and turn up the difficulty and try the campaign again!

I'm a hardcore Doom fan. I downloaded Doom shareware off the id Software BBS back in the day. Doom was the first game that got me into PC gaming. Countless hours spent playing co-op with a friend over a modem and the ability to mod the game completely turned me away from console games. Doom has always been something that I personally identify with since it made a huge impact on my life. I ended up getting into game design full time because of it. Then along came Doom 3. It was good and I liked it, but it didn't feel the same. iD tried to fit Doom into the games of the time rather than adapt Doom to fit but still be Doom. With all of that said, I knew I would buy the new Doom no matter what, but I didn't expect it could ever live up to the originals. I figured it would just be another Doom 3, especially given the long troubled development time this game had. Doom lives up to Doom 1 and Doom 2 perfectly. It feels like playing those old games again but with better graphics and the ability to look up and down. And jump. It's like this game is better than it had any right to be. It's not even that it just surpassed my low expectations, it blew my expectations away. It's better than I could have wished it to be. The gameplay is fast, tense, difficult, and fun. All the layers of upgrades for weapons, armor, and runes will have you scouring the map for secret areas and killing enemies in ways you wouldn't have otherwise. A lot of people have complained about the "glory kills" in which you damage an enemy and they stagger and you can perform an execution on them. I thought it would get repetitive but it doesn't. It adds another layer of strategy to how you take on enemy encounters. If you're low on health and you don't see any medpacks laying around (because there is no health regeneration like all modern games have) you will end up trying to shoot an enemy just enough to stagger them so you can glory kill them, soak up some health, and continue the battle. Just like the old Doom games, this new Doom will leave you just low enough on health and ammo that you'll stress out, but if you play smart, you'll barely make it through, and you'll get back up to full health, and then they do it to you again. Doom is awesome. Buy it. Romero's head and Commander Keen command you.

Doom is as relevant, smart and self-aware as ever, merging old ideas with new ones and injecting near-flawless shooter mechanics into a campaign that’s impeccably refined, hilariously dumb and fiendishly moreish. Thumbs way up!!!

This game is fast-paced and action packed. You can carry all your guns (no two gun limit here!) Stay still and you're dead, so you gotta keep moving. The action is frenetic, balanced, and very satisfying. Single player campaign is also fun because of atmospheric environments, tons of fun secrets that make your soldier stronger, so they're worth seeking out. Story is simple but interesting enough to keep you going. Great game for fans of old school shooters, and a nice pace from the duck and cover call of duty gameplay. Highly recommend!

Hesitated on getting the game after I disliked the beta multiplayer (even though I tend to only stick to single player campaign) but was interested when the game came out and got good reviews. I waited for price drop and picked it up primarily for the single player campaign. The game itself is a lot of fun. Very similar to the old school games from the 90s. A lot of references with the enemies and gameplay. Highly recommend the game for all gamers (mature gamers only, very gory game though).

I love this game! I bought a $3000 computer back in the early 90s just so I could play the original doom. They did a great job on this game. Tons of demons, Key cards, weapons and health just lying around, And heart pounding action! That's what made the original so great. The intensity you feel when you walk into a room and you get to a certain point and all of a sudden demons just start appearing everywhere. I haven't even gotten to the multiplayer yet, because the single player is so great. There's lots of Easter eggs and secrets to find. Get this game today!

I used to play this game all the time in the early 90s on my PC. It was my favorite game. I played the beta (multiplayer) last month and immediately preordered the game. It was worth the wait. It is fantastic! The preorder came with the original DOOM and DOOM 2, which was a nostalgic treat. It is the old favorite ...8-bit pixels and all. I had forgotten just how bad those early graphics were; but the new DOOM's graphics are beautiful! The single player campaign is detailed and engaging; and the multiplayer is fast action fun that reminds me of Quake Arena 3 & 4 (also a favorite). I used to love building custom DOOM and QUAKE maps; so the snapmap feature looks interesting.

This is an outstanding game!! Tons of fun and the story is pretty good! I hope they make a sequel to it. Some flashbacks to the original and some weapons feel like your are playing the original! Tons of action and the secrets are really tricky sometimes. A must buy if you like Doom and FPS. The is an excellent revive from the Doom 3 that came out. Go download the demo and then pick this game up! I'm sure you will be hooked!

Bethesda took the roots of the old school doom and rewrote it for the modern age. Fast paced, relentless action, and a thrilling challenge to play. Campaign is promising for long term players, but the multiplayer, although fun, is kinda lacking in something that would keep me for longer than 6 months. If you love old school action, youll love this.

Doom is back, and it looks phenomenal. It plays amazingly well. The single player campaign is very well done. The story is the same as previous installments, but still keeps your interest. If you like Doom or fast paced First-person-shooters then you should buy this game.

It's a leap of faith to drop $60 on a game these days just to see if they live up to the expectations. This game delivers! The campaign is off the hook, and you can tailor the experience by switching between the 3 difficulty modes. If you like carnage on a mass scale with built in challenges as well this game is for you!
