Good First GPS Running Watch for the AVID Runner

The Epson ProSense 17 is everything you would expect from a low tier GPS watch. My first few attempts to pair the watch to my Android smartphone was very frustrating. Even though my phone's Bluetooth settings would tell me that I was paired, the app would not recognize this and I would get an error code. Once I finally got connected it wasn't long before I lost connection and I wasn't able to update the firmware so that my watch functioned as needed. After about an hour I was finally able to update the firmware and use the watch with my smartphone. The good news is that you can sync your workouts with popular workout apps such as Runkeeper and MapMyRun which I really appreciated. The GPS is also really accurate and your route data can be transferred to those other popular apps. The only real issue I have with the GPS is that it is not accessible while indoors which I tried many times to update the time on the watch. Other than that I've never had a problem starting a workout with GPS enabled(Note: Starting a workout is really simple. Click the bottom right button on the watch until it displays the desired workout and then press start. The GPS will activate and the watch will vibrate when it has found your location. Simply hit start again and you're off and running!). Features on the watch are either great to have or just plain useless. The ability to set automatic lap notifications through vibrations or goal markers by time and distance is awesome and exactly what you'd want in a running watch. Also, you can set up the watch face to tell you the desired information during a walk or run whether that be your total time, distance, or even heart rate if you have a chest strap connected. You get all the info needed during your run which I found extremely helpful. I was able to track my cadence to keep it consistent and view pace in real time. For all the aspects of an average runner this watch is great. The added features such as smartphone notifications or music control is just terrible. Like I mentioned before the Bluetooth connectivity is awful and it disconnects from your phone even if you're a few feet away. Notifications on the watch when they do go through only shows the classification of the notification so if you get an email it’ll say email or text if you get a message but it does not display any readable text from the message you receive. You still need to look at your phone to read and reply to messages so this function is a little pointless. When the Bluetooth works the watch is great for transferring and updating data to your phone but just terrible when it isn't working which is most of the time(Hopefully this is improved with firmware updates in the future. Update: I wrote this review before a newer firmware update was pushed. Downloaded new update and Bluetooth connectivity has been greatly improved to the point where I can now leave the room with my smartphone and come back inside later on with the watch pairing by itself and notification alerts functioning properly. Still having trouble connecting to Bluetooth after the watch is powered off and then on again but this new update is certainly much better). Overall I like the watch. I use it mostly for tracking my runs even though I am recovering from a recent sprained ankle and occasionally for tracking my steps during the day and sleep at night. It tells me how many calories I've burned throughout the day and I'm able to store that data via Google fit. There is also a place to set up an alarm so your watch vibrates when you want it to alert you on a certain time which I find really useful at work but it is not enough to wake me up so I only use the alarm feature when I know I’ll be awake. The battery life is not great but enough for the amount of time I use the watch. It's water resistant so I can take it swimming or run in the rain without worrying about damaging it. For someone looking for an inexpensive GPS running watch that you're able to read real time running stats with and transfer the data to your favorite workout app then this watch is for you. If you expect so much more such as a heart rate sensor and reading text notifications or viewing your current location on your wrist then you should pass on this watch and do further research on a different one. It's right for me and I have already purchased one as a gift for my brother who is a daily runner.

Starter Tracker Watch

The setup of the Epson ProSense 17 watch is not difficult but if could be a little bit friendlier. I find it hard to remember the last time I opened a tech product with a rechargeable battery that didn’t come pre-charged. You have to wait for the watch to charge out of the box, so don’t expect to open it and test it out right away. Upon opening it, you will find a clip that can easily be connected to the watch to charge. It is not a universal connection, so you must buy their proprietary cable if you ever lose it.
The key feature of this calorie/exercise tracker is that is includes its own built in gps and is very precise. It has many options and features that health enthusiasts will appreciate and can take advantage of, such as the watch vibrating after a mile has been completed. However, the display of the watch is not in color. It only offers a green background with black letters.
The performance of this watch good. A device like this one, though, can only be as good as the app that complements it. Upon setting it up, I did struggle to get it to sync up with the appropriate time on my cellphone. I had chosen the correct time zone and even the app showed the correct time, but the watch wasn’t syncing up and was 6 hours and a few minutes behind. I solved the problem by updating it via GPS straight from the watch, without using the app. When using it to work out, though, it was very accurate. I went running around the park wearing it on my non-dominant hand (left) while wearing a different brand on the right hand. Both measured the # of steps accurately and chimed at the mile marks at about the same time.
The Epson ProSense 17 marginally meets my expectations. Its major competitor offers detachable faceplates; this one doesn’t. You are committed to the strap and color, so take that into consideration when making your purchase. The watch does look unisex, but the strap is rather narrow so it might look awkward on bigger wrists. Other fitness trackers update wirelessly, so you can update your watch on the go. For this one, you have to update the watch while having it connected to the charging cable. Also, options are good, but too many options get convoluted quickly. This watch itself has 5 buttons and those are used to start/stop things or navigate through menus. The menus could be reworked to be more user friendly. The screen itself isn’t a touch screen, so the buttons are your only option to navigate it’s many options.
The price for the Epson ProSense 17 in terms of value is on par with other competitors.
I highly recommend this product for people who are on a strict budget for a fitness watch tracker or for people who don’t plan on engaging with an active community. The app of the watch allows you to link with other existing communities and you can choose from some of the more popular communities like Map My Ride, but that makes everyone more divided instead of having a dedicated community from within the app itself. It’s a great starter watch for those new to a fitness tracker.

This watch tracks quite a lot, but as a complete package (because of the app), it's a bit of a disappointment. For running/walking the watch is great; it tracks distance, time, speed, calories, etc, it's light-weight, the band is open which easily helps get rid of sweat, and the GPS accuracy is great (although acquisition takes a bit of time to complete at times). I am a bit put off by the charging cord which is a large clip instead of the basic universal USB that I expected. I'm not sure why Epson went with this type of connection, unless they wanted to make the watch as water proof/resistant as possible. However, if they were going for water-proof angle for swimming, then I would assume you could add swimming to the activity modes tracked by the watch. This is where my biggest complaint comes in; the android app is all but useless. Supposedly you can set the watch settings via the app and even add activities that aren't present by default. I'm not sure if this watch model supports swimming or biking because each time I have tried to add activities, the app freezes. I have a Samsung S8, so any app that completely freezes is a huge disappointment for me. Yes, the web-based application allows you to track your sessions using all kinds of breakdowns, but if the watch is supposed to allow 'fine tuning' via the app, then the app should work. I have tried to find fixes for the app online, but it seems as if the app either works for people or it doesn't. I write software, that doesn't make sense to me.
Overall, I would recommend the watch for running/walking, but again, the app appears to be hit or miss. I'm giving the watch 4 stars, but the app gets 1... I'll round the overall to 3 stars in the hopes Epson fixes the app.

I’ve had my watch for about two weeks now and I am at the gym quite a bit.
Moreover, I like to take hikes on nature trails in town and just get lost among the trees in the creeks.
The GPS feature is great for tracking those excercise outings and it is lightweight and not fussy or jazzed up.
Unfortunately the application and platform fell short for me. It felt replicated and resembles other applications, where those other apps carry more functions.
Set up was not as easy as I wanted it to be and the charging cable is tricky so if you get this watch make sure to verify that the charging clip is sitting in the right spot.
This is a good starter watch for someone who is just jumping in on their healthy life and wants to to be able to track steps and other workouts. The watch does measure a few types of popular workouts so that is cool!

Epson ProSense 17 GPS watch setup is quick and easy. Please make sure that watch charged fully before setup. Download the Epson View app from iTunes App store or Google play store. Follow the onscreen instructions and select your preferences to configure by phone, PC. I have used Set By Phone option and configured the settings less than 5 mins.
The numbers are fairly large and easy to read. It has alarm and stopwatch functions and can receive call, message and email notifications. It can track daily activities like steps, sleep, calories burned with notifications. It will take up to 3 hours for full charge and it will last long without enabling GPS tracker. The charging clip is very odd design which i have not seen before in any product.
I will first highlight the features of this watch.
It records GPS, distance, pace and more
Battery life is around 13 hrs. with GPS, 7 days of activity tracking, 30 days watch mode
Workout modes are available for Run, Walk and Treadmill
Built-in SmartStride sensor tracks cadence and stride length
It will track daily activity including steps, calories burned and sleep
Receive smart notifications and control music playing on your phone
It has features like vibration workout alerts and interval training
Programmable lap timer and customizable workout screens
It syncs easily to popular running apps like Strava, Runkeeper, MapMyrun etc.
There are too many buttons in the watch which are very confusing to use. I feel that the quality of the watch is not great even though there are quite number of good features embedded in this watch. I did not like the concept of clip based charging when most of the manufacturers are moving towards wireless charging. For first attempt in smart watch space, Epson fairly did well.
I had high hope for Epson ProSense 17 GPS watch as it came from a company who are champions in Printers and Projectors. However, it is really disappointing that Epson ProSense 17 GPS watch did not meet my expectations.

Good Running Watch - but that's it

I've been struggling with the battery life of my smartwatch since I use it for workouts. Since I like to go for a 5k jog or walk at least 2 times a week, I thought that I should try out a watch dedicated for running.
I took the ProSense 17 with me on a few treks and honestly, the battery life didn't impress me compared to my other smartwatch. The information on the exercise was comparable, Epson said I actually went a little further than I did - but I learned it's because when I'd jog in place at an intersection, I was getting credit for steps.
An odd feature is the battery connector that Epson uses, it's a literal clip and you have to position the clip on the watch's face and underbelly perfectly, otherwise it won't charge. It's not as easy or intuitive as other charging setups I've seen.
The main problem I have with this watch is that I always found myself comparing it to my smartwatch in terms of what it could do and couldn't. Admittedly, that's not fair - but with wearables that can do so much more than track a run or play music, I think that this watch won't have a long shelf life.

Keeping it Simple

Perhaps I'm jaded, but I really had to contemplate how a health/sport device this simplistic is justified. My smartphone already tracks my steps, has a lap stopwatch and uses GPS. All that info is automatically synchronized without my efforts.
The ProSense 17 does all of those things mentioned, and not much more.
That said, the more I used it, the more I appreciated its value. The battery lasts several days (3-6), unlike my smartphone. The shape, though bulky for my taste, is also superior for an active person. It's a tough watch that can be worn while playing softball, at the gym, etc.
The interface is super simple. That makes the ProSense 17 good for children and parents. It's easy to get the information you need quickly. I'd like to see the steps and calories font size be swappable with the clock. The time is less critical to me than performance data when active.
I found the charging easy, but odd. You plug into a USB connection and then literally clamp the charger onto the side of the ProSense. I was always afraid of damaging the screen...but didn't.
Overall, this device grew on me. I think it's a nice simple device that is easy to learn and easy to use.

Big window dial provides a clear and crisp reading. The overall build quality of the body is nothing special and is marginally average compared to rival running watches. Very lightweight and comfortable to wear. Prosense 17 has a nonchalant no frills appearance which I really do not mind. The reported battery life with GPS active is 13 hours and I was able to get about 11+. Connections to apps was sometimes dodgy but worked well for the most part. The Prosense 17 is not going to blow you away and is appealing to people who are delving into the recreational watch market for the first time. It is a decent to nice watch that is easy to learn and use from the start.

If the early 90's had bluetooth and smartphones...

This watch is definitely something of a throwback to the early 90's. It is priced like a tech-focused watch of the era, and has a display to match.
Appearance: This looks like a throwback to the 90's. The body is thick black plastic which feels fairly cheap. The band is similarly cheap-feeling plastic. At least it won't have an issue with sweat. The screen is a fairly basic display of large black plastic with a simple white-ish back-lighting that comes on when you move your wrist.
Battery: The battery lasted for about 3 days between charges.
Features: You are supposed to be able to customize the display through the app, but I haven't been able to figure out how to do this. I don't know if this is because of the watch, the app being in an early version, or whatever the case may be. The app also appears to have settings for notifications, but I wasn't able to get any notifications to show up. Not for email, text, calls, anything.
You can start tracking walking/running or treadmill activity through the watch by navigating with the buttons around the sides of the watch.
I'm inclined to say that there is no need for this watch. If you're tracking short work--outs, you can track all of this with your smartphone, which you need to carry with you anyway for the watch to track things. The only way that I could see wanting this watch is if you're going on full-day treks where you aren't going to have your phone accessible. If you're going on long treks, you probably aren't tracking steps though...
Side-note: I find it very strange that Seiko Epson is releasing this line of watches under the Epson brand rather than the Seiko name (which is actually known for making watches).

Good fitness tracker geared toward runners

This is a great tracker for runners.
It monitors all manner of useful metrics for running and walking. It monitors steps, time, calories, pace, sleep, location (via GPS), and distance; and it can be setup to monitor running, walking, or treadmill workouts.
Syncing the watch proved a little problematic. My one year old, budget android phone was unable to to establish a connection. Fortunately, Epson's website does offer instruction for establishing a wired connection to a PC using their proprietary charging cable.
The marketing materials advertise a week's worth of battery on a charge (with GPS turned off). I only managed 3-days.
You do have to be a little careful when handling the watch. I somehow managed to trigger a workout while putting my coat on. It then took me a few minutes to figure out how to exit the workout and view the actual time.
I've been using this watch on the treadmill, and it tracks my metrics beautifully. That being said, it didn't register anything while I was on the stationary bike, elliptical, or stair machine. Like I mentioned earlier, this device is strongly geared towards runners / joggers. General fitness enthusiast who are looking for a tracker that tracks everything will be disappointed.
The display can be customized in regards to what metrics it shows and how it shows them, but it doesn't appear capable of displaying push notifications from a cell phone. This was a little disappointing as I like to keep abreast of any incoming text messages as I work out.
If you're a jogger or runner, this watch would be a good investment for you. If you're a general fitness enthusiast looking for a good all around tracker, you may want to keep looking.

My son runs track. This watch has been so helpful for him to track his distance and pace during training. I love that he can get notifications even during his workouts. He uses the app to set goals and has seen improvement since he's been able to challenge himself. He customized it so that it's tailored to track his workouts, calories burned and even his sleep patterns. It's very user friendly and not difficult to figure out how to use the various features.

My critique of the Epson - ProSense 17 GPS Running Watch - Black is as follows: First I had to charge the battery and then install the Epson View App on my phone. Creating an account on the Epson View App by scrolling month after month per year is too tedious instead of simply having blanks that the date could be quickly inserted into. After I created my account, the app gave instructions to follow in order to program the Epson - ProSense 17 GPS Running Watch - Black for its first use. Updating the date and time by GPS did not work indoors so I had to do it manually. Once outside and selecting the walk function, the GPS attempted to connect again. The GPS connected in approximately five minutes.
I tried to reopen the Epson View App after its first use, but it would not open. The app froze from functioning. The screen stayed on Epson View with the white background and kept timing out. I could not get back into the app to continue the programming of my Epson - ProSense 17 GPS Running Watch - Black. I had to shut down and restart my phone to get the Epson View app back open.
The Epson - ProSense 17 GPS Running Watch - Black with the Epson View app does monitor physical activities and calculate physical gains of improvement. The only problem that I have is learning how to use all of the many functions. The learning of the watch with the combination of the app can seem a bit overwhelming for a novice into physical fitness, but I am sure that a person knowledgeable of the fitness culture will have no problems in understanding all of the ins and outs of the Epson - ProSense 17 GPS Running Watch - Black.

The ProSense 17 fitness watch does a great job of keeping track of my exercise (or lack thereof...) and is easy enough to use after a brief learning curve.
However, I have 2 complaints - the battery lasts less than a whole day so you have to remember to charge it every day - and it uses a proprietary charging cable so if that's not with you, you are out of luck. Fair enough. But what drives me insane is something that is pretty common to every wearable I've ever owned with a watch-style resin band, and that's that the "tail" of the band comes out of the restraining loop just about every 5 minutes, so then you have half the band flapping around in the breeze and hooking on everything you pass. That is enough to make me leave it behind for anything except a serious workout. If they fixed this issue, I would then say it's a 4.5 star device. As it is now, only 3 stars.

You wouldn't think of Epson as a watch or sports apparel competitor. But I am pleasantly surprised by how much I like my Epson Prosense 17 GPS Running Watch. It isn't a game change in style, but I dont think thats what Epson is going for. it tracks my mileage accurately and records distance and pace. The battery life on it is great at a tad under 12 hours in my testing. I has a weekly tracking system to show you your progress. Coupled with the fact that you can check everything on the Epson View Mobile App. You can automatically upload your workouts to the app and it also functions with more advanced apps like Strava, RunKeeper, and MapMyRun. The watch handles sweat well, and it feels comfortable around your wrist. I like that it also tracks my cadence as well. There are alot of great features to this watch that for the money I really think make it a great running watch. Overall I am happy with the watch and will continue to use it every time I run.

This is a sports watch with built-in GPS but is nice enough to be worn for day to day use as well. The watch face measures approximately 1.75” in diameter and is controlled by 5 buttons; the watch weighs under 2 ounces. The numbers are large and easy to read. The watch has alarm and stopwatch functions. It can also receive call, message and email notifications and control a music player if it is paired with a smart phone. The watch can track daily activities (steps, sleep, calories burned and notify you when you have reached your (customizable) goals. A full charge takes about 3 hours and will last up to 30 days if you don’t use the GPS tracker, or 13 hours with GPS tracker on. The watch will save and recall up to 64 workouts or 2,000 laps. It connects to telephones with Bluetooth. You can also connect directly to a computer with the USB charging clip. You can set watch controls and monitor your progress using the Epson View app (Android/iPhone/computers). The watch ships with a USB charging clip (transformer sold separately, but it will work in any standard USB charger), and a quickstart guide. A full manual can be downloaded from the manufacturer’s website (recommended).
I have been pleased with this watch so far. It is easy to use and combines both GPS tracking and step counting features. If it is paired with a phone, you can receive call, message, or Facebook notifications. To increase accuracy, you can calibrate your stride length. The numbers on the face are large and easy to read. Note that the watch doesn’t have a built-in heart rate monitor. You can add a heart rate monitor chest strap if you want (sold separately). Without the heart rate monitor, the watch is probably most useful for fitness tracking (especially for walkers), since it doesn’t show heart rate zones. (Heart rate zones can be displayed if you add a heart rate monitor chest strap).
The GPS tracking function is very accurate, which is handy for photographers as well as for walkers. By uploading the GPS tracks from the watch to the Epson View app on my computer, and then downloading the tracks to the map module in Lightroom, I am able to geotag my photos very accurately. With the GPS track on, the watch battery will last about 13 hours, long enough for a full day outdoors. If you plan to use the GPS every day, be sure and put the watch on the charger every night just as you charge your phone for daily use. If you don’t use the GPS tracking feature, this watch will run for days (or even longer) without a charge.
Even though this is a running watch primarily made for running, its nice enough to be worn daily routine basis as well. This watch is relatively simply to set up and use. Still, to get the most out of it, it is helpful to download the full manual from the manufacture’s website. Overall, this watch provides useful functions like activity monitoring, GPS tracking, and phone notifications in a single easy to use device.

First thing first you can not compare this watch to a smart watch. For its intended use this is a great watch. Out of the box it must be charged so before placing it on my wrist I let it charge for a few hours. It sync easily to my iPhone, so set up was easy. My first task was to see how well this watch would track my run. So after ensuring that it was calibrated for my stride I strapped on my other smart watch and stepped off on a mile run to see how well this watch would do in comparison. All I can say is that the ProSense 17 is spot on. It feels great on my wrist and I will be running with it from now on. If used for its intended use, you won’t be disappointed.

I usually use other devices to track my exercise regiments and thought this would be a good way to track my runs. It does a pretty good job at that, however there is a delay in acquiring a GPS signal. The associated mobile app is not really ready for prime time and is glitchy. The battery life is not the greatest and the device needs to be charged every other day. I had problems charging the device and think long term charging is an area of weakness.

Setup wasn't bad, but watch didn't come charged out of the box, so that was different than what I was used to. Battery life on this is good compared to others, but remember this is not a color screen, which i am fine with, but others may not like it. Overall I think this is a great value. The Epson watch is a solid GPS watch. The GPS function works really well for running and walking. The IPhone app pairs smoothly with the watch. The watch strap has tons of adjustability so it stays in place while running.
The downsides of the watch is the battery life, if you’re using the GPS function a lot, then the watch battery might not last all day. The display and buttons are cleanly laid out and easy to read. Overall it works well, but not as well as I would expect for this price point.

As a watch, or step counter it works well. However, it feels cheap, the battery barely lasts a day, the operating system is not intuitive and it doesn't provide any real workout usefulness. My final thoughts are that it seems be a technology out of the stone age.
