A Decent AC Unit for Small Spaces

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I've recently bought two AC Units for my 2 bedroom apartment, this 8000 BTU unit -- which I am reviewing here -- and a 14000 BTU unit of the same brand that I will review on its own page, however I will make references to it for comparison. The 8000 BTU unit was easy to setup, minus the hose. As I have experienced with my other AC unit, setting up the hose is a real pain and can become really frustrating trying to keep it falling out of its connectors. In fact I spent more time on the hose than unboxing and moving this AC into place. However, once you get it all in place, and once you have a solid connection, you can forget about it. You may need some patience with this initial setup. Other than the hose situation, the unit itself is much lighter than I expected, and much lighter than the 14000 BTU unit. It doesn't have very many panel options and the remote offers basic functionality. In fact the remote is the exact same as my 14000 BTU model, and it even works with it. I currently have this unit in a 300 sq ft bedroom that serves as a home office, or at times my own man-cave. For the most part, it does in fact cool the room down about a degree, maybe two but it didn't cool it down as I had expected it to. Unless you're right in front of the unit within two feet, you may not experience any of the cold-chilling air you would have expected from an AC unit. In order to feel as if I am being cooled, I have to aim this right at my desk from 4 feet away. It only seems to cool the area around my desk and not actually the entire room (very much). It was a little disappointing as sometimes I felt like I just bought a really heavy, noisy, glorified fan. For cooling comparison, the 14000 BTU unit I have does in fact COOL the room down, even its lowest fan speed in Cool Mode set to 65 degrees does better than this 8000 BTU unit at full speed at 62 degrees. The 8000 BTU unit does have three fan speeds. Noisy, Noisier and Noisiest. The actual output doesn't feel much different between speeds, it certainly doesn't fee like it cools the area down any better, or quicker, with any particular speed. And that's with setting it down to the coolest 62 degrees in Cool Mode. The 14000 BTU unit I have has a Swing option which moves the air output up and down to cover more space, this 8000 BTU unit does not have such an option. You have to manually set the vents to aim up or down with an extra vent which you can move a bit to the left or right. I noticed that this doesn't make much of a difference as the air will just blow straight out regardless. I do like that it's a small easy to move unit but how far you can move it is limited to the hose and your tolerance for having to reset the hose when it pops off if you decide to move it. The unit is well designed and well built, and it looks and feels high-quality. It is much more compact than I expected specially after buying a much bigger unit previously. It's about the size of a small filing cabinet. It doesn't take up much space even in a small room. And yes it does come with a window kit which extends quite a bit (I have long vertical windows). And no, unless you use the Dehumidifier option, you don't need to drain anything. Overall I like the unit more than I dislike it. While I could still return this unit for a refund, having this unit in my office room is still better than not having it, especially during the heatwave we had here in California. I based my purchase on other reviews which at the time seemed to have the best reviews of all the others in its class. Despite my gripes, it's not a bad unit, I just had the expectation of frigid air and a significant cool down of my office room. This was the first time I ever bought an AC unit so my expectations were a little too high from the lack of experience. If you want something much cooler -- I mean Artic Blast Of the Ice Gods -- you might want to go for a unit greater than 8000 BTU, I expect all units of this class to perform about the same. If you're ok with cooler-than-room-temp air, then this unit, along with its low price, is worth it.

Exceptional Portable A/C in it's price range!

Pros: - Good for compact, small spaces - Easy to setup out of the box - Great A/C that blows cold air for small spaces - Relatively affordable price Cons: - If window is not sealed correctly or room / surrounding atmosphere is extremely humid, be prepared to drain this A/C frequently (i.e: every 2-3 hours in extreme conditions). - Setup may be a little complicated if you are not open to customizing the window attachment. - Relatively loud for light sleepers - Only for use in small rooms, anything over 300+ Square Feet will have heat spots and you may feel this A/C is ineffective in cooling the whole area intended. Overall: Although 8,000 BTU, if the window is sealed effectively, this little portable A/C takes a little long to get cool, but when it is warmed up (no pun intended), it really ensures that a small room (150-250 Square Feet) is cold. You have to look into buying this A/C with the intention of not using it for a large space. If that is the case, this small portable A/C is an exceptional choice, given the price.

    Updated Review: Water Leakage Issues

I previously submitted a positive review on this product. I am updating it due to one issue: water leakage!! I've now had this product for two months. It was easy to set up, use and cools the space quickly. It is a a bit noisy, but nothing too bothersome for us. However, the instructions say there will be no need for draining the unit unless you use it on the humidifier setting--"Dry" instead of "Cool". Further, the instructions say that you will need to use a short garden hose to drain the water *only* if you use it on "Dry". Well, that's NOT true! For the first month that we used the air conditioner, there were no drainage or leakage issues and we *only* use it on "Cool". Then, about three weeks ago--water everywhere! I did some research online--apparently this is a "thing" with portable air conditioners, whether you use it as a humidifier or not. So, buyer beware! It's a great little cooling machine, but it is not without some headache. We have ours sitting on inside a large shallow pan (because there had been some leaking from underneath the unit), and we have a short garden hose attached to the back drain hole going into a bucket. Be sure the garden hose is attached properly and securely, or else water will drip from around it. If we run the air conditioner for several hours, the bucket is about 1/2 full of water. Also, when we empty the bucket, we have to make sure the garden hose immediately goes into a second bucket, or else excess water comes streaming out of it. Be careful, or you will have ruined floors! I would still recommend this unit, as long as you take the proper precautions.

This is a decent unit and the second portable a/c I've owned. The installation process was a bit difficult due to my window opening sideways and the short hose assembly provided. I had to improvise to make sure everything look decent to follow HOA guidance at my property. It was a little difficult to install the end of the hose to the caps, but not impossible. I also had to get a paper window blind to cover the gap to make sure everything was sealed properly and didn't look ghetto from the outside. The unit works great and cools the room nicely. However, I have a Dyson fan in the room that also helps with the airflow. The only thing I dislike about the unit is that it does not shut off by itself, it stays on and on. For a non energy efficient artifact, I am a little concern and am considering to return. It certainly gets the job done.

This is our second purchase of a portable AC. Our first one is an LG and is so noisy we have to choose whether to shut off while watching our nightly TV shows and suffer from the heat, sometimes causing us to fall asleep uncomfortably until we realize, hey AC isn't on, OR leaving the AC on and trying to figure out the dialogue. We lose either way. With the Frigidaire portable AC, it's quiet and has several choices for speed, while the LG only has High and Low, the low setting being almost the same noise level as the High. The compression on the Frigidaire seems to have some tech improvements as it doesn't immediately shut off with a loud boom. It takes a few seconds to shut off which is prob good for the electrical components, while the LG shuts off hard and immediately after pressing the power button. My son's bedroom which is slightly bigger than ours cools down quicker and better with the Frigidaire. I had to increase the setting to 72 because he said he's so cold in middle of the night he can't get up to get a drink of water or go for a bathroom run. We jokingly tell him we will switch our LG to his room and take his. The heat the LG gives off via the tubing leading the air out the window is like having AC and a heater on in the room at the same time. I haven't experienced that with the Frigidaire. The timer on the Frigidaire is excellent and I set it up before going to bed so that my son doesn't have an excuse not to get up because his room may be too cold. The ONLY thing that I see as a negative and it's so negligent, but still worth mentioning for those who NEED this perk is that the Frigidaire Portable AC doesn't tell you the temperature of the room. It ONLY shows you the temperature both on the remote and the AC panel that you set it to cool the room down to. The LG shows you the actual temperature as it changes, and shows you the temperature you choose to set it to go down to when you press the up and down buttons. I hope my review helped you make an informed decision. I compared many models and most were average, so I took a chance and have no regrets thus far. Keep in mind some are lemons right out of the box, but that can happen with any electrical device. I also forgot to mention the cleanliness factor. Window AC's get quite dirty and filled with mold and dirt. The portable seems to stay cleaner and do a great job of blocking out or filtering out any odors from coming in, such as neighbor cutting lawn or smoking, which was a disaster with our last window AC in my son's room, which this portable one is replacing.

Pros Not that loud Remote Controlled Slim Profile Fairly easy setup Cons No auto shut off Leaks First the major con. It leaks. The literature and review will have you believe that you don't need to run a hose to constantly drain the AC in cooling mode and you can rely on the internal pan but this simply isn't true. My parents have a portable AC and they told me I would have to do that despite what the literature and reviews say and I found out they were right today when my floor was wet. Second minor con. It never shuts off. If it reaches temp it just goes into fan mode. This might be to save the compressor from kicking on and off but that was disappointing. If you're going to get this unit you need to decide if these things are a deal breaker. I purchased this one specifically because it seemed I could use the internal pan based on what I read. I was wrong. On to the good stuff. I bought this unit to provide additional cooling in my upper bungalow bedroom. The house has central AC but it struggles to cool this room due to being only partly insulated and being on the second floor. The unit cools the space OK. If it were a traditional room without its own stair well I'd imagine it would cool the room much better. My room isn't miserable anymore it is much cooler. It just doesn't seem to ever reach temp but I would probably need a 12k for that. I had to insulate the exhaust tube right away. I used duct wrap to do so but there are special made products out there. This is true of all portable AC units. If you don't insulate that duct the AC is working hard to cool a room that is also being heated by its duct. Overall I say that it's an entry level portable AC that has one major flaw and that flaw can be addressed by clear wording on the literature both on sales sites and in Frigidaire manuals. Let people decide if they want to deal with the hose in a bucket draining rather than provide a false sense of security.

Keeps it cold. A soothing hum when running. A bit too loud for tv watching, but perfect to go to sleep. I use this in my bedroom for the hot summer nights and have ZERO complaints. For humid nights there is an option to use as a dehumidifier (you'll need to hook up a garden hose for water run off.) Affordable unit, comes with all of the exhaust pipes and window placement tools needed. Can roll it around the entire house. The sucker is kind of heavy though, so lift with the legs of taking up and down stairs:

This air conditioner is compact enough not to take up a lot of room, but powerful enough to cool down a bedroom. We use it in an area that has a sunroom off the bedroom, and it's in the south-facing part of the house, so it really gets warm. The air conditioner does a great job cooling everything off. It was easy to set up and fairly easy to use. The symbols on the remote are a little small and take some getting used to, but it's nice that it lights up. As for the noise level, it is a little noisy, but not too annoying for us. Great purchase!

Developed some back problems, so we went with portable a/cs instead of window units. I did some homework, and Honeywells got fairly consistent good ratings. Bought a Honeywell a/c because of the warranty (5 yrs parts and labor) and because it used less current (amps) than comparable units. Also bought this Frigidaire instead of another Honeywell just to "cover our bases." We put the Frigidaire in my wife's office, about 120 sq feet and the Honeywell in our bedroom, about 150 sq feet. My wife started remarking about how "chilly" it was in her office and how she had to turn the temp up. The Honeywell, on the other hand, at full blast could not keep up with a 90 degree day. The best it could do is get our bedroom down to about 75 - 78 degrees. We took it back and got another Frigidaire and have been a lot more satisfied. It draws about an amp more power than the Honeywell and is a little louder, but the fan is a lot stronger and it actually cools our bedroom. Not as good of a warranty, but it's cheaper and it works better.

I've used the unit three times now and it's worked well. The cooling isn't immediate but with enough time and support from a ceiling fan, the temperature starts cool. When in operation, the unit is somewhat loud, but nothing outrageous when compared to a box fan set on high. Controls on the unit itself are somewhat limited; you'll need to use the remote control for a majority of options. The installation of the exhaust hose was fairly straightforward.

The unit is inexpensive and works well. My only critique is the trim kit. I didn't like having to make a permanent install since I will remove this unit in the winter. The gasket is very flimsy and has adhesive that will be hard to remove come winter. I am going to get different gasketing next summer to make it more easily removable. Otherwise the unit has a remote and is easy to setup and cools a third floor bedroom that gets pretty toasty on a hot summer day.

This is my second portable air conditioner purchase. The first one was a different brand and the air conditioner lasted about 3-4 years. I was not a fan of the previous air conditioner. With this particular air conditioner, I like that it is more compact, a nicer looking design and easy to install. This cooled down my child's small bedroom within about 10-15 minutes and kept her comfortable during a heatwave! It does the trick.

I love this portable unit. Quick install - no more lifting heavy units into the window. The remote control works like a charm, especially when its hot and you don't feel like moving. My bedroom is 325 sq ft and this unit makes it comfortable within 10 minutes. Remember to adjust the temperature accordingly at night, by remote or unit, you will freeze. I have not used the Dry/Dehumidify function yet, will update if I do (does not come with a drainage hose, I believe a standard hose will fit).

I purchased this unit for a 150sq ft room. I specifically chose the 8000 BTU thinking it would be sufficient for my tiny room but I was wrong. The unit itself works good but is not as powerful (it doesn't cool enough) even at the lowest setting. It is a bit on the noisy side but it does not bother me, I can still fall asleep with no issues. The hose for the window attachment is extremely bad as mentioned in other reviews. You have to get creative with tape or whatever else works to make it stay attached to the window panel and be very careful no to move the unit because it will come off easily. Frigidaire needs to improve that. I believe if I would have chosen a 11000 BTU AC I would be very happy, the unit works good, it cools fast but it does not cool enough, I still use a small desk fan and the ceiling fan to feel comfortable. My advice: whatever BTU you think you need, go higher, this unit is supposed to cool a room up to 300sq ft according to its manufacturer, but it can't even cool my 150sq ft room.

It gets the room cold, especially when there are few people in the room or few people moving around. It is a little noisy but it's not bad. I think I should have gotten a higher BTU then 8,000, since the kitchen is not separated from the living room, which is the area I use it for, but overall it is good enough. Especially for that price.

This is a great little unit. It is a little loud when compared to a central unit but it is manageable. The air blows out in the 55-58 degree range and keeps our 20x13 room cool. It isn't a whole house unit but if you are looking to supplement a central unit or if you have windows like mine in an 80 year old home I don't have standard sized windows to put in a window unit. The installation was easy. It will require a screwdriver, measuring tape, a saw to cut your window piece into place, and probably a friend to help. I got this do get us by this summer with a down central unit that will be $5,000 to replace. A $300 unit is much easier on the wallet until I can save up to replace the central unit. I highly recommend this unit for those looking for a portable unit or replacing a window unit. This is much quieter than a window unit and much easier to install.

So I've been using my portable AC unit for a few days and wish I would have ordered this years ago. Living on a second floor of an apartment with no AC in Wyoming you would think that you wouldn't need an AC because it's Wyoming. However, living on the second floor of an apartment I get all the residual heat from the first floor. Within minutes of using the AC you could definitely feel the temperature dropping in the apartment. After a while it got so chilly I had to bring out a blanket because I was cold. Granted the unit is a little noisy but it sounds like a loud fan and is hardly noticeable unless you are trying to watch TV which is next to impossible. However, I would give up being able to watch TV if it keeps my place nice and cool. I would definitely recommend this to others and for the price it isn't too bad.
