As a photographer and Videographer that shoots in the field, it is ever important to me to have reliable fast data transfer and storage. With SSD drives becoming more user accessible, now is the time to upgrade your storage and never look back. The speed at which you can read and write to SSD’s over the older spinning hard drives is of no comparison. This drive boasts transfer speeds up to 560MB/s. Gone are the days of waiting for older hard drives to spin up. With SSD’s your editing becomes an extension of your creativity, not a hindrance. I am using this drive to edit 4K footage in Premiere Pro. Granted I use proxies to make scrubbing buttery smooth, the playback and speed of this external drive is the same as editing from an internal SSD. This drive utilizes the USB C interface and plugs into my laptops USB C port natively, making it VERY fast and extremely efficient. It also comes with the older USB 3.0/2.0 cable in case your system does not include a USB C port. Reliability is also extremely important when choosing storage. G-Drive (owned and operated by Western Digital) has garnered a great reputation and have become a go-to drive for my professional and personal needs. Size and weight are also important when lugging around gear and the G-Drive external SSD literally fits the bill in this category. Measuring roughly 2x4 inches and weighing only 90 grams, this drive is the ultimate in portability. You won’t even know it’s in your case, so be sure to double check before you leave! Build quality is top notch. With IP67 dust and water resistance, this is yet another reason to choose this product if you shoot in the field. Very tough indeed. One thing to note is that if you plan on using this drive on a Windows 10 machine, you will need to download the free “G-Technology Format Wizard” software from their website to format the drive before initial use. This is a straightforward and very easy process. All in all, I can’t say enough good things about the G-Drive external SSD. It’s small, light, rugged, FAST, and reliable. Not to mention extremely affordable. All the best features are covered here. It’s a 100% no brainer.

This is an extremely portable drive that is very fast as well as small and light weight, yet with a great solid build quality. It is perfect for me to transfer files from my main system and especially on the go. The combination of SSD and USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 is the perfect match. You get the stability and durability of solid state and the fantastic transfer speeds that USB-C offers. I was generally seeing a tick under the advertised 560MB/sec, but speeds were easily 4x to 5x faster than the speeds I was getting with my old drive. I love the real-world gains you can see and feel. Further, the drive itself is just well-built. Despite being light, it has a solid feel and the aluminum core provides a great deal of protection. It is IP67 water and dust resistant, has 3-meter drop protection and a 1000lb crushproof rating. Lastly, if an issue does arise, it comes with a 5 year warranty from G-Technology. Ultimately, I like everything about this drive. Small. Light. Solid. Very Fast. Dependable. Great Warranty. It protects my data and gives me back time with real-world speed gains. When you put all of that together you get a great drive and I think a great value.

Durable, Well Made Portable Solid State Drive

PROS: - It’s a really nice portable size. You can tell it’s a tiny bit bigger than other portable SSD drives but that is because of it’s protective layer. - Speaking of that, I love how its made to be water/dust/shock resistant. When buying a portable drive, you want it to protect your files and it really adds that extra layer. - After set up, this SSD is a breeze! It is very fast and efficient to use. CONS: - This device was not a simple plug in and use. I had to whipe the drive and then set it up within my computer’s settings. G-Drive provided easy enough directions on their website but I’d imagine some less tech savvy people it would be difficult. BOTTOM LINE: You will be very happy with this purchase. After set up, this drive is a great SSD to protect your files at home or on the go.

This has been an awesome solution for my portable storage needs. I have to back up employee files and clean a computer up before setting up the work station for a. New employee. This drive is Night and day faster than the more expensive portable drive I was currently using. I also had to have Independant power for the other drive where this one does not, making it a faster, cheaper, and truly portable option!

The G-drive is compact, water-resistant and fast! It is “plug and play” ready, with USB and USB Type C connectors. I tried it with two different MacBooks, and the computers recognized the drive immediately. I do graphic design work, and this drive will come in handy for transferring and backing up large design project files. The G-drive has a small footprint, is very portable, and does not require external power. And it comes with a 5-year warranty.

Great little portable drive. SSD is definitely the way to go with portable storage these days. Prices have come way down (as long as you stick to 500gb or less) and the smaller size is great. This particular SSD by G-Tech feels solid as a rock and is super fast. I like the fact that both a usb-c to usb-c and a usb-c to usb cord included. This drive is just a little bigger than similar SSD's from the competitors. However, it feels like it is much better made. Honestly, there are really only two big things to be concerned about with a small drive. Speed and durability and this drive wins big on both fronts!

Out of the box the hard drive is ready for Mac, with a quick reformatting it was windows ready. (Reformatting is required for windows to access the full storage capacity of the hard drive.) The instructions to reformat the hard drive are included in a file on the drive, simply click the file and follow instructions and in less than a minute it was done. I was able to transfer 13gb of data in less than 4mins via usb 3.0, I could not believe how fast the transfer went! Viewing the files on drive on different computers went as expected, the drive functions like most plug in storage devices. The solid state drive is small and quite portable, I am please with this product so far.

I now have 3 laptops that have USB-C drives and I wanted a hard drive that could work with all of these devices. I also wanted SSD, all of my devices have those drives, so should the portable drive. This has everything I wanted all in a small form factor that fits easily in my bag. Their support is awesome as well, I called and within minutes they helped me to format the drive so it works on Windows and Mac OS. It works on my Chromebook as well. Transfers are super fast and the drive is whisper quiet. This is a perfect little portable hard drive, I love it.

Needs to be partitioned first for PC

With sd cards getting huge capacities, why does anyone bother carrying around an external drive anymore, let alone a sold state one that has a fraction of the capacity? Because of the write speeds. Using CrystalDiskMark, I clocked my write speeds on this at over 400MBps. That sort of speed is necessary for installing programs to an external drive (because my tablet pc has limited storage) and still expect it to perform properly. The size of this thing is a real plus, since previously I was using an old full sized SSD in a cheapo enclosure. I did have to take away one star. Out of the box it wasn't recognized by my PC. The USB sound played, which meant that my computer was recognizing it, but no drives were mounted. Opening up Disk Management showed no drive letter, so I deleted the partitions and created a brand new volume. I guess it was preformatted for Macs, but since I know how to use a real computer it was easy enough for me to fix. I can just imagine the queue of angry, less tech-savvy customers unable to use their new external SSD, and all the returns processed despite nothing being wrong with the hardware itself (other than being preformatted for MacOS). Because of that, I can't really recommend to anyone not familiar with initializing disks and creating partitions, because it's way too easy to wipe the wrong drive in Disk Management. Otherwise it's an excellent portable drive, and I love that it comes with both USB type A and type C cords, both short enough to not get tangled in my bag.

I looked at many drives and also have a few other brands of drives as well but what sold me on this drive was the 5 year warranty. Having said this be mindful that the drive wll be replaced if it fails during this time but the files stored on it will be lost. My suggestion is to have more than one backup. This drive is rugged and waterproof. I have used G Technology for along time without any issues. I have a MacBook Pro and this drive is configured for MACS. This drive is very pocketable. This drive comes with two cords but they are short. Some other drives come with a USB C cord and an adapter for USB. I guess it’s a mater of preference but the adapter is more likely to get lost. I highly recommend this drive even though it is a little pricier. My local Best Buy had it for 139 dollars. I really think most drives you buy will be reliable. Again, the 5 year warranty is 2 more years thank the others. Good luck !
