This is my second Garmin. Had some difficulty using it, could not figure where to put the city location in. Needed updated just out of the box . Love the bigger screen

I decided to purchase a new GPS because my old GPS did not have lifetime maps and because the ouch screen was becoming difficult to use. I don't like using my phone because the screen is too small. The Garmin - nüvi 57LM 5 GPS is great. The touch screen is easier to use than my previous GPS, the screen size is just right, and the search options are very good. I also like that is has lifetime map updates.

Awesome device but USA only

Awesome device. Used in almost all states in Central and East USA. Does not work in Canada as soon as you cross the bridge. Loads any map under 15sec (good compared to cost). Keeps cell phone free. Good and reliable for long distances. Needs a few days to get used to the resistive touch screen.
Good holder stand and long charging wire (comes in box). Suction cup is powerful but leaves circular marks on windshield if left in car parked in sun. But can wipe them out. Overall good and reliable.

Good basic GPS

The main reason for this purchase was to replace an older GPS that does not update maps. This is a very basic, entry level machine and it will get you where you are going. Not overly complicated and not too difficult to program. You will need access to a computer in order to be able to download the operating manual. You could probably figure out how run this GPS without the manual but you would also probably miss out on some of the not so obvious features and the map updates. Have used it on a trip from Memphis to Nashville and you don't really need a GPS for this trip until you reach your destination. Nashville is a major crossroads and can be a challenge to your driving skills. You need to pay attention to your surroundings and this is where the turn announcements comes in handy. Be aware that the announcement can be a little lagging so you can check the next turn graphic so as not to be caught by surprise. Also when the ignition is turned off the GPS turns itself off. I would recommend that anyone consider this machine if you are in the market for a GPS due to brand, price, does not take up too much windshield real estate and lifetime maps.

My old Garmin GPS was recommended by the store associate because it was easy to use, which I requested. It served me well for years. When I was ready for a newer model with lifetime map updates, I knew what I would buy. The new Garmin has new features that I like, and it is serving me well, as before.

Function is good as ever, address entry is a PITA

I love Garmin products. I have since I purchased my first, a C340 Street Pilot. I have had a number of new GOS units since then. Garmin products are typically reliable, accurate, and easy to use. When I bought two of these, one each for my wife and I, I was anticipating that they would be just as they always have been. This model is reliable and accurate. But putting in the addresses to which to go is a total PITA. So many companies have been going to "smart" technology, where they try to make devices anticipate your commands. HA! On a daily basis I can be found zipping around any of four States, sometimes all in the same day. It will allow me to put in the street number, then the street, but then the device tries to predict the towns and states based on the street. It gives you a list of choices that you have to scroll through hoping to find the number and street you selected with the city and State it lists. Usually it works, sometimes it does not, and it always adds a ton of time. I hate this unit with a passion.
I have always recommended Garmin in the past. I do not in the least way recommend this unit.

This GPS replaced an old outdated one. This has a large screen, easy to read with limited distractions. Easy search with pop up suggestions. Recent search and favorite save gives quick recall to previous addresses. No wifi access, but not necessary. This is basic, straightforward and easy to use, all you need.

I'm replacing a 10 year old unit that was stolen out of my car, and since that unit had Canadian and Hawaii/Alaska maps, I never thought to check if those were included. I only wanted GPS for ski/snowboard trips to Whistler and Vancouver. Unfortunately, I found out once I crossed the border that Canada is NOT included, the maps just stopped loading. To make it worse, it was a $60 download on Garmins website. It worked great and I really like the unit until I realized the maps I wanted weren't loaded.
I went to a Best Buy in Canada and it had all 50 states and Canada loaded on a similarly priced unit (with the favorable exchange rate, I saved about $30).
I can't recommend this to friends since most of my friends would only buy a GPS unit to travel to Whister or Vancouver. But if you just want it for the lower states, it's a really nice unit.

If you even think of buying any other brand of GPS, return it and only go with a Garmin. We have been using them for work trucks and they are always right on the money, easy to update, and reliable. DON'T BUY ANYTHING ELSE

This gps is very useful. When there are multiple lanes, it lets me know exactly which one I need to be in. It also has landmarkers, so you know exactly where you should be or looking for if you are a visual person.

This Garmin is a little hard to figure out, and there's no helpful manual but we're gradually getting there. However, the features are really good - alerts when you're in a school zone, much better pronunciation of directions, much clearer directions, and much easier to enter addresses.

This GPS is an upgrade to one that I already own. It works great and has lifetime updates, which is something my old one did not have. it is small enough to be placed under the seat and large enough for me to make out everything on the screen.

Replacing an Older Garmin was a Great Decision

We have owned a Garmin 205W for at least 8 years, always using it when taking trips into parts unknown. As it got older, the battery grew weaker, and it seemed to take longer to acquire satellites. We wondered if we should just use a cell phone as a GPS, but even with the latest in cellphone mapping capabilities we missed the old Garmin. With a long trip a week away we bought a Nuvi 57, which does everything the old one did but so much better. Quick satellite acquisition, easier to use functions, somewhat larger screen - all add up to a great decision to upgrade.

I bought the Garmin to replace my old Garmin of 15 years. I love that it comes with lifetime map updates, the old one I had to pay extra for them. I also like the split screen when you get to your exit, so that it shows you exactly what you are looking at. I also enjoy the fact that this new Garmin shows you what the speed limit is and what your current speed is, both features were not on my older Garmin. It's a great purchase for a beginner. It is easy to set up and get started.
