It assists in helping keep house temperatures down (compared to gas), cooks at or near temperatures, but it’s really loud and is space-intensive.

Our next range is almost certain to be induction, and I wanted to get the hang of cooking with it; I had some reward certificates piled up, so I thought I'd get a portable 1-burner cooktop to try out. This was one of the top contenders on several review sites.
First of all, be aware that induction cooktops do NOT work with non-magnetic cookware! All-aluminum won't work, and (surprisingly) a lot of stainless steel won't work either. If a magnet will stick to the bottom of your pot or pan - Hamilton Beach helpfully includes a magnet for testing - it should be just fine.
To keep from self-destructing, this unit will turn itself off within a few seconds if there's nothing sitting on it, or if you try to use non-magnetic cookware.
Now that that's out of the way - this unit lets you switch between multiple power levels OR target temperatures (you can switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit). I'm still experimenting to see which power levels work best for which foods; it's like getting used to any new stove. At the higher levels, it brings a pot to a boil very fast indeed.
Induction cooktops (unlike gas or traditional electric) produce heat within the pot or pan itself, rather than heating from the outside; even so, the glass under the pot WILL get hot, so treat it with care for a few minutes after cooking. The cooktop itself also generates some heat, so it has an internal fan that starts a second before heating begins and runs for a few seconds after you turn the unit off; it's not silent, but it's not too loud either. Some cookware - especially if it's made of layers of metal rather than one solid chunk of iron or steel - will make a buzzing noise while the cooktop is on; it's a little surprising at first but totally normal.
My sweetie and I like to joke about "sweating over a hot stove"; one of the first things you'll notice with induction is that ONLY the pot is getting hot - not the rest of the kitchen. That might be a little inconvenient in winter, but it's very nice in the middle of a Los Angeles summer!

We purchased this to see how we like induction before buying a built in. It has been great but the fan is a little loud. It is easy to clean and store and will be great in the future as an extra burner on big cooking days.

I love this! Great quality, cooks super fast, and easy to use. I really like that it has two functions to choose from: By power or by temperature. Would definitely recommend.

Purchased this to set up temporary kitchen in basement during remodel. Absolutely outstanding and works considerably faster than a standard ceramic electric cooktop. If your cookware is magnetic on the bottom, then this will work great. It's fast, powerful, and great from fry to simmer.

Works great with my Permanent Cookware. I can cook out on the patio and prevent smoking up my house. It’s also great for camping…plug it into an outdoor plug.

Buttons are a little touchy. They can change settings if you accidently brush over them and don't appear to work if your fingers or hotplate are wet. Cooking is pretty even which isn't true of all induction cooktops. Is great for cooking outdoors in summer so you don't heat your living space! Would like to see Best Buy offer more variety of brands or at least explain their choice of this one.

Works like a charm! I was surprised to feel the amount residual heat on the cooktop surface after it was turned off. I'd recommend it if you're on a budget.

It heats up the pan very quickly and doesn’t create a lot of unnecessary heat in the kitchen. I can place it anywhere I want and has been working well for the past three months. Getting another one soon.
