Customers are pleased with the sound quality, cooling features, and comfort of the OMEN Mindframe headset. Many also appreciate the bass response and the snug fit. However, some users find the headset to be heavy, and there have been some reports of microphone issues. Overall, the positive feedback on audio quality and comfort outweighs the negative comments regarding weight and microphone performance.

A Novel Headset Feature

I have been using the HP Omen Mindframe Headset for about 2.5 weeks in a mix between office work, music, movies, and games. The biggest feature of this headset is its cooling ear cups. Every headset needs some sort of hook or gimmick to set itself apart, so I wondered how useful it was. To access the functionality of the headset, you will need to download the Omen Command Center from the Windows store.
Build Quality
The Mindframe headset has a nice looking build quality to it. The earcup shells are sturdy, and robust. The earcup material is a breathable cloth feels comfortable on the ears. The boom mic is one of the better flip down mics I have dealt with. The flip down movement has a nice resistance and a click at the end of its travel. The boom can be curved closer to your mouth to find that optimum placement – I found that the boom did a good job retaining its curved position. The cable is 6.5’ long and has a fully braided outer sleeve. Its connection feels solid, so I’m not worried about it getting kinked and losing connection. The LED ring around the outside of the earcups is perfectly blended into the frame, and looks extra RGB-gamery. The inner suspended headband is really nice and does of great job of distributing the weight of the Mindframe across the top of your head.
The only aspect of the build quality I have a problem with is the outer headband. It is far too floppy. The cooling earcups are the heaviest earcups I have come across, and the outer band just feels too soft and pliable. For the price range the Mindframe occupies, I would have expected a sturdier plastic or aluminum band. As a mechanical engineer, I understand that this band is flexible to avoid breaking under strain. If the plastic is too stiff, then it will crack under normal strain. At this point I would have opted for an aluminum support band inlaid into the plastic. This would have taken some of the floppiness out, while promoting the perception of a stronger band. You can tell people that what you have designed has been tested to withstand anything that you throw it, but if they perceive it to be weak you will have a hard time convincing them.
Comfort
The Mindframes are very comfortable. The ear cups are made out of a breathable cloth that feels plenty comfortable on my ears. The suspension headband design does a nice just spreading the load on my head. Even with the added weight of the cooling components. It took about 2-3 hours before I started to feel a hot spot on top of my head. That’s longer than I would have figured because these are some pretty weighty headphones. I have 3 other sets of headphones – HyperX Cloud Core, HyperX Cloud Alpha, and Plantronics Rig 800HD. I would rank the Mindframe’s last in my personal collection, but only by a little bit. I think if the suspension band was a bit wider it would help with the comfort. Regardless, my other 3 headsets are very comfortable, and the Mindframe is just behind it. Once you add the cooling in, the Mindframe gains an area of comfort the others can’t compete with, which is certainly worth something. I hate dealing with hot sweaty ears, so this aspect appealed to me. I think it certainly narrows the comfort gap between my headsets.
Cooling
First of all, this is not just a gimmick, The HP Frostcap really works. Exceedingly well. I found that my ears would actually be cold if I had it set up on high. The cooling has 4 settings – High, Med, Low, and Off. The cooling comes by way of a thermoelectric process called the Peltier Effect. The aluminum cold plate located inside the ear cup transfers the heat away from your ears and passes it to the headset frame. So as your ears cool off, the frame will warm up a noticeable amount. I have found this feature to be really useful when I am jumping onto my computer after going for a run. Feels great to cool down like that. I assume it will be equally nice in the summertime, but It’s December so I have awhile before I can confirm that. Overall the cooling is awesome, and if you deal with hot or sweaty ears it’s definitely a useful feature.
I had 2 issues with the cooling though. The first is that the headset has no onboard memory to remember the settings. Therefore, if you take the headset, and plug it into a new computer the cooling defaults to high and requires you to download the Omen Command Center on the new computer before you can adjust the cooling/lighting. This is both annoying, and silly to have to deal with. You can’t guarantee that you can download the software on every computer you wish to game on (i.e. gaming café’s). The second issue being the added weight of the cooling apparatus. These are by far the heaviest headsets I own, and I would attribute the bulk of that added weight to the cooling system. I don’t think there is any way around this, so it may be a necessary evil if you want the cooling.
Sound
The Mindframe’s are locked into 7.1 channel, and as of now there is no way to change that. You can use Windows Sonic to adjust the EQ’s or get the Dolby Atmos app for headsets. Either way you can improve your listening experience with one of these options. However, since it is locked to 7.1 I have to break the sound quality out into the use cases.
5.1/7.1 mixed audio for movies
5.1/7.1 mixed audio for games
Any stereo sound
For listening to 5.1/7.1 audio for movies, I feel like the Mindframe’s did a pretty decent job giving me good sound reproduction. Dialogue was nice and clear, and the virtual surround sound didn’t sound too bad. The amount of bass in the headphones was adequate and not overblown. Mids and highs were good as well. When I enabled my Atmos app, I did notice an overall improvement in the sound reproduction for the virtual surround.
For listening to 5.1/7.1 audio for games, I again thought the Mindframes did a good job. Game sounds were nicely rendered – gunfire sounded sharp, and explosions deep. The virtual surround sounded great, and you could differentiate where the noises were coming from. Again, with Atmos enabled, the mixing sounded improved, but not as drastic as with the movies/TV.
For stereo sound, whether it was chats, music, youtube, etc the sound quality took a hit. That forced virtual 7.1 makes the sound come through as hollow. Chats were mostly OK, but a true stereo headset just sounded better. Music was also impacted and didn’t sound the best. It did sound better than my cheap earbuds but compared to a stereo headset it was subpar. It would be amazing if I could just toggle the sound mixing between stereo and multichannel depending on my current use case. This part of the Omen Command Center feels under realized, as they could likely implement this sort of control of EQ’s in their software.
The mic sound is perfectly acceptable. I have only used it for Skype calls, and other web applications at work. I have done a few recordings for, and the playback sounds just fine as well. Overall, the mic does a good job of filtering out the background noise and just picking up my voice.
Other Areas/Features
There really aren’t too many other features to come with these headsets. They have a volume control knob on the backside of the right earcup. This controls the system volume of your computer. I am not a fan of its placement since every time I put them/take them off I accidentally move the scroll wheel. That’s only a small issue, and I’m sure with more use I will train myself to stop moving the volume knob each time.
The only other feature I can think of is the LED effects. Each earcup has an LED ring on the outside of the earcup frame. You can make the color solid, rotate through colors, or have it match the sounds being produced. The LED’s serve no purpose other than looking cool, which they accomplish
Conclusion
Overall, if you remove the cooling aspect of the Mindframe’s from the equation, they are an average set of headphones. For music and non 5.1/7.1 mixed sources, a set of regular stereo headphones would serve you better. For gaming and watching movies (5.1/7.1) the Mindframe sounds above average. The mixing is pretty good and the virtual surround is nice. You do need to take into account the usefulness of the Frost Cap though when looking at these because it is such a cool (no pun intended) feature. I deal with sweaty ears with both of my HyperX’s, and warm ears with my Rig’s. With the Mindframe’s I am kept nice and cool. One of the last things you want to do while playing is pull an ear cup off to let you ear breathe a bit.
I liked these headsets quite a bit, but for now they are not 100% my daily drivers. I keep my HyperX Cores at my desk for music playback, while the Mindframe’s handle the rest of the audio tasks. If HP were to implement an EQ into the Omen Command Center, and allow toggling the virtual surround on/off I think these would be a total homerun. As of right now, the software and audio control let them down.

HP - OMEN by HP Mindframe Wired 7.1 Virtual Surround Sound Gaming Headset for Windows 10 - Black/Red
Summary:
Solid, stylish, substantial, and comfortable. Oh, and they sound great as well.
Pros:
The sound quality is also quite good. One of my favorite features is the mic disable/enable by moving the mic arm up and down. While the mic is OFF, the light is on. While the mic is ON, the light is off. If the positioning wasn't enough of a cue, then the LED light OR the audible BEEP that triggers when you lift/ lower the mic should be. Other headsets of lesser build quality can be tricky and it is easy to forget that the mic is near your mouth or on/off. This helps with that problem.
These headsets are surprisingly comfortable. They cup and "hold" my ears just perfectly. The headset feels heavy and substantial when you put them on. I'm not accustomed to wearing headsets like these, but I have had worn other units. This one feels nice given its weight. This unit feels sturdy and well built. The retractable banding that brings the cups together at the center where the unit rests on your head is also cleverly adjusted. Just the right amount of pressure to keep the unit steady without the fatigue of something sitting on your head for hours on end.
My favorite feature, and one of the prominently advertised ones, is the in-cup cooling. These headsets really do actively work to keep the ear chambers cool. I can feel, not a draft, but... I can feel the temperature difference with the feature on versus off. This is controlled through the Omen Command Center.
Also configurable via the Omen Command Center is the LED lighting that follows the outer contours of the ear cups. You can adjust the color and brightness. You can set them to fix mode, off, or even color fading (you choose pattern and timing). Pretty neat. I paired this with my primary desktop which is an Alienware Aurora R5. The red banding on the headsets matches perfectly the red banding on my desktop!
Finally, the cord for the headset is wrapped in a braided sleeve. It feels sturdy and durable. I expect it will help to reduce wear on the cord itself as I move, roll up, store, etc. the unit.
Cons:
I'm really not sure if this is a con, or just an observation: the unit felt heavy when I first put them on. I think this really a result of the build quality which really seems exceptional and the fact that I usually hate headsets and haven't tolerated their use for long periods of time.
Use:
I wanted something to play games as well as to use while participating in my twice weekly conference calls with work (I work remote). I have a standard monitor mounted webcam, but sometimes I need the privacy of hearing calls. Sometimes I don't want to worry about having the cam plugged in. Sometimes I want to shut out the noise my doggies make when they wrestle at precisely the same time my conference calls start. Comfortable and functional, I quite love this headset!
I'm sorry I couldn't upload useful pictures. I'm not entirely sure what sort of pictures would be practical and helpful. They really do look as sharp as the marketing material shows! They also come packaged in super svelte packaging you can use to keep them safe while storing, if needed.

Owned the headset less than a week (delivered on July first, defect occured July fifth.)
It functions perfectly and as expected, cooling is pleasant, LED's and software is working as advertised. but the outer ear cup Omen logo medallion just fell off. Out of the box I noticed that the right ear medallion wiggled from top to bottom. And thought nothing of it. And today it fell off...
I love the hardware aside from this issue. The adhesive holding it on is a very weak... like glue strip? It's hard to explain, but in the picture that little thin square is all that holds the outer ear cup medallions on.
Great product, feeble adhesive.
Would still recommend on value alone. Colling earcups work great. Easy to use, just plug and play.

This is a very well built head set. Even the packaging feels high end.
I love the FrostCap technology it really dose make a big difference. I've had to take my other sets off after long use and getting sweaty. But not with these. They feel super cold when you first put them on but that dose go away and they just keep you at a comfortable temperature. In less your ear is hitting the inner cooling unit then its very cold all the time. But my ears fit well in this unit not touching any thing.
The sound is crisp and clean when gaming. And with the virtual 7.1 surround sound it gives you that edge over the enemy.
I did find the bass lacking when listening to audio. But come on these are for gaming and they do that great!!
They have a sweet app you can download. OMEN command center. Giving you access to change the light color on both left and right ear pieces to any color in the rainbow and more. Also if you find the the FrostCap is cooling to much for your liking you can turn it down in this app or off completely if you wish.
They are a bit heavy weighing in at 1 pound. That's twice as much as my other gaming headset. But these are still my go to set now when gaming.

I wore these for two hours and afterwards made the decision immediately to return these. There was significant condensation on the inside, despite the “cooling” technology. You could hear anything being played through the headphones very clearly from the outside while wearing, even on low settings. Not worth the money when there are a lot better options.

So if you are looking at these new HP wired mind frame gaming headset because of the cooling feature. Then you are smart. Because the frostcap technology is amazing. Weird but amazing. I game a lot mostly on ps4 but I mess around on PC as well. My ears get got with normal headphones. These actually work. I was skeptical because these are the first I believe. I run hot and they work 100%. Now to the sound- they sound well balanced and clear. With the virtual 7.1 surround works well as most sets do. These light up red on the outsides of the cups. Well build and very sturdy. Great design. The mic is clear not the best but not bad by any stretch. Only real downside to this is the usb cord is a bit short but not too bad for most people. The price isn’t bad at all compared to other name brands. Oh and if you wanted to know if they work on the PS4? Well they DO WORK ON THE PS4. Awesome for me and many others I’m assuming. Great product 1000%.

The HP Omen Mindframe headset's main selling point is definitely the ear refrigerators. These things will keep you playing comfortably for hours, without even feeling too weird on the ears. Cranking them to the maximum cooling level and letting them get nice and cool before putting them provides a very cold jolt to the ears at first, but after a bit will you will sort of feel it balance out and it'll feel slightly cooler than room temperature for hours. Apart from the cool ear AC idea, the sound quality is pretty good; definitely good enough for casual gaming with voice chat on, maybe not quite good enough for a great music listening experience. The headset is comfortable and feels very well built, and the microphone is absolutely good enough for voice chat. The 7.1 surround sound is probably the weakest part of the headset for me, but it may be because of the games and music I use them for. Everything sounds a bit more washed out with the 7.1 on, so I have it turned it off. Absolutely worth the 60 or 70 dollars I spent on them, I would highly recommend.

I was *so* excited for this headset. I run a pretty high temperature, and on any over-the-ear headphones I tend to sweat quite a lot. Active cooling sounds like the best idea ever to me.
... and it works. Somewhat.
The sound quality is good, but is not great. I like my music deep and rich, and these phones are heavy enough and large enough that they should be capable of providing that. The bass is there, but not as pronounced as I'd like.
The mic is actually better quality than I anticipated; compared to my Snowball, it's actually just a mere smidge better on volume and on clarity. This was probably the most surprising positive for me: headphone mics are rarely all that great.
The USB cable is a fair length for laptop use, but unless your desktop CPU is right in your face, that's going to be a limiting factor.
I got these phones on a super deal and only paid $99 for them; they are SUPERLATIVE at that price. Had I paid the standard $180, I would have been a great deal more critical.
Oh, afterthought: the OMEN software is great for controlling the cooling and lights, but... lights? Meh, whatever. Not my thing, really.

I got this when it was on sale for $50, couldn’t be happier. The sound quality is very good and the cooling actually works as described. It is a little on the heavy side but it doesn’t not affect the overall comfort. The headset has a nice soft foam and the mic is very clear. The build quality is also very good.

I bought this headset on a recent sale when it was deeply discounted and I am extremely happy with it. Sound quality and clarity are amazing! It is well built and has some nice features such as the volume control on the right earpiece and the mic automatically shuts off when you flip it up. It is USB only so it can't be used as headphones with a phone or mp3 player but I love it for listening to music on my laptop or desktop computers. It is also very comfortable and automatically adjusts to your head size. This unit is a big step up from the Logitech G430 I had previously used.

first purchase of a headset, first thing I notice they are heavy, but got used to wearing them really fast, the sound is good playing ESO and Elite Dangerous on a PC.
the ear covers are nice and dot make me sweat, the cooling plate is nice it keeps the inside of the ear cups cool.
I cant really get the OMEN app to work in Windows 10 so I haven't really adjusted the sound of the cooling feature just using the headset with the out of the box settings.
over all a good headset, the app who knows have never seen it?

I have been using the HP Mindframe for the last few days and so far I have been pretty happy with the headset. The sound quality of the headset is pretty good (but not great) and on par and maybe even a fraction better than most mid tier headsets from Turtle Beach, Razer, etc. The ear cooling technology is pretty cool but how useful it might be long term is still to be determined. The mic works but again, is not anything special.
All that said, I paid $50 for the headset while it was on sale during the 4th of July Holiday. Had I paid the $200 retail price or even the current $150 asking price, I would have been very disappointed. Everything about the headset is good to very good but very little is great. For $200 this set should be wireless or offer better sound than what it does.
A great buy if it drops in price again otherwise you probably want to pass.

This is not a gimmick, it actually keeps your ears cool. Just leave it on the lowest setting and you wont have to worry about your ears getting sweaty or hot. The sound quality and comfort are great. Only thing that I would say could improve is cutting the cord and making this wireless. Overall, very satisfied with this purchase.

Nice sound and comfrey. after 4 hours or you are someplace hot, you will feel the coolness. The reason I didnt give it 5 stars is because the cups get hot on the outside but cool in the inside not burning hot just warm. But for 50 dollars. Worth the price.

The headphones are very well packaged, the packaging is about on par with most high-end headsets. After wearing them for more than 4 hours my comfort level is about the same when I first started due to the coolness of my ears making it more comfortable. You can tell the difference of its weight but it's honestly not that heavy to wear. The earphones are big enough to fit my ears inside and I have some decently sized ears so no complaints there. I will say that I wish the earphone cups weren't just fabric as they seem to compress very easily after extended use. If they were made out of a slight firmer material or higher quality memory foam this four star review would have been a five-star.

According to other reviews, you need some OMEN Control Center software to properly unlock all the features and settings of the headset.
With the headset itself, the only thing I can control is the volume.
The cooling feature is nice, but I wish I could make it colder, which is apparently an option under the Control Center that keeps crashing.
If they fixed their software, 5/5. For now, 4/5.
