I've had this laptop for a couple of months and it's a great buy for the money. It was fairly easy to upgrade. There is an empty space for a 2.5in drive as well as empty bay for memory. There's not much in the way of bloatware on this computer which is nice other than the usual HP stuff and free trial security software. Keep in mind it doesn't come with Office. The biggest downsides I've seen to this laptop is the plastic screen bezel feels flimsy. You can feel it flex a bit when you close the lid so it has me worried how it will hold up to a drop on a hard floor. Worse than that is the screen quality itself. The quality of screen varies wildly depending on viewing angle so it's definitely not an IPS panel that's in these things although this may depend on supply and demand whichever screen you get in it. I found that this makes it more difficult to edit photos since an incorrect viewing angle can alter the perception of both colors and brightness of a photo. I'll definitely be researching compatible IPS displays for this model in the future. Other than that, it's seems to be moderately powerful. I haven't tried any games too new but it does handle the Metro Redux games at full detail as well as Bioshock Infinite and seems to stay at least 30 FPS most of the time.

Very good laptop for the discounted price. The screen quality is very bad, the ventilation when gaming is not very good for cooling, but it is something common in Laptops and more in HP. Space is lacking, but add an SSD via Sata and another Ram memory unit and it will be excellent for video games.

Got this for Black Friday last year, and I couldn't be much happier. This is a budget gaming laptop with great features. One of the fastest processors you can get. A solid GPU for HD gaming at 60 fps. 8 GB of RAM isn't spectacular but sufficient for most purposes. The screen could be brighter, but I've gotten used to the lower light. It actually helps me reduce my eye fatigue. The keys and mousepad are not top notch but, once again, more than sufficient. The SSD is small, but you shouldn't be using this for most large games. 5 hours of battery life and a heftier build is standard for gaming laptops, so keep that in mind in case you prefer portability.
I did end up having to get a different budget laptop for my longer days at school. Unfortunately, my university has limited outlets in the classrooms. But I still love this laptop!

I was able to buy this for $450 on Sale during Black Friday Week.
All I can say after getting it is WOW am Impressed.
Fast, Cool, and Runs quiet.
I have not run any games yet, the Graphics Card should handle that fine.
I do have one tip....
The Screen looked VERY washed out with default settings.
Base on Readings elsewhere I did the following.
Launch AMD Radeon Settings Lite app
Click Display
Click Color at the top right side
For Color Temperature click on automatic instead of 6500k
Set/Leave brightness at 0
Change contrast to 120
Change saturation to 115
Click the back arrow and turn off Vari-Bright
Click to turn on virtual super resolution
After those Tweaks, the Screen looked MUCH better.

Attached panel sucks, keyboard feel - layout not so good, case doesn't feel solid.
But for 450, rest of this laptop was perfect for me. Now I can play modern games above 30 fps.
For another $30, took a chance and added memory "DOLGIX 8GB Single DDR4 3200" from amazon. Works perfectly so far. This laptop also has an internal ssd sata slot. Plugged in my existing SSD, then added that space to steam library, now have more gigs for games :)
Don't know about reliability, best of luck.

Great value at purchase price---great processor, upgradeable RAM, 4GB video card, WiFi 6.
Screen is fine if you are not picky.
Not having mouse buttons on mouse trackpad is annoying, but at least trackpad supports useful motions like pinch to zoom.

I got it at a great price for $450. It is a pretty entry level laptop, but it runs great. The screen is also pretty lackluster, but it was a good deal.

Value for money. Paid $450 for this which is a great price for a gaming laptop. Form factor is very nice. Performance is good relative to what I paid. Ability to run most games (as long as its not on high settings) is a plus.

Mixed Experience: HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop

I purchased the HP Pavilion 15.6" Gaming Laptop with AMD Ryzen 5, 8GB Memory, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650, and 256GB SSD in Shadow Black in April 2021. While I had high hopes for this laptop, I must admit that my experience has been somewhat disappointing. Here's my detailed review of the HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop.
Performance: The laptop's AMD Ryzen 5 processor and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 graphics card should provide decent performance for gaming and other tasks. However, I found that the laptop struggled to handle more demanding games and resource-intensive applications. The 8GB memory felt limiting, leading to occasional lag and slow loading times. If you're a serious gamer or plan to use this laptop for heavy multitasking, the performance may not meet your expectations.
Display and Design: The 15.6" display offers a decent visual experience with its full HD resolution. However, the color accuracy and contrast levels are average at best, and the viewing angles could be better. The design of the laptop is sleek and the Shadow Black color adds a touch of style, but the build quality feels somewhat flimsy. The plastic chassis doesn't inspire confidence in terms of durability.
Storage: The 256GB SSD provides fast boot times and quick access to files. However, the storage capacity is quite limited, especially for gaming, where games can easily consume large amounts of space. You may need to consider external storage or upgrading to a larger capacity SSD if you require more storage for your applications and files.
Cooling System and Noise: One notable issue with this laptop is its cooling system. The laptop tends to heat up quickly during extended gaming sessions or when running demanding tasks. The cooling fans can become loud and distracting, negatively impacting the overall gaming experience. I found myself needing to use an external cooling pad to keep the laptop's temperature under control.
Battery Life: The battery life on this laptop is average, lasting around 4-5 hours with regular use. However, when running games or other resource-intensive applications, the battery drains much faster. This can be inconvenient if you frequently use the laptop on the go without access to a power source.
Software and Bloatware: The laptop comes with pre-installed software and bloatware that can be overwhelming and unnecessary. It takes time to uninstall or disable these programs, and they can affect system performance and clutter the user experience.
Overall, my experience with the HP Pavilion 15.6" Gaming Laptop has been somewhat disappointing. The performance limitations, average display quality, heating issues, and limited storage capacity have impacted my satisfaction with this product. If you're a casual gamer or have basic computing needs, this laptop might suffice. However, for those seeking a more robust gaming experience or higher performance, I would recommend considering alternative options with more powerful specifications and better build quality.
Pros:
Sleek design and Shadow Black color
Decent visual experience with the full HD display
Fast boot times and quick access to files with the 256GB SSD
Affordable price point for entry-level gaming
Cons:
Limited performance for demanding games and multitasking
Average display quality and viewing angles
Flimsy build quality
Heating issues during extended use
Limited storage capacity
Average battery life and quick drain during resource-intensive tasks
Pre-installed software and bloatware affecting system performance

Although this may not be the best gaming laptop out there, it certainly is a nice and affordable one IF you catch it on sale! In terms of gaming, it can run some pretty light to moderate games but I would not use this laptop for heavy gaming, such as games that require a lot of memory and RAM. The gaming experience is pretty smooth and in terms of design, the laptop is beautiful! However, I do not like the fact that the laptop has a few “cheap” plastic bits, such as the border around the screen. Also, I don’t like how there’s only two USB ports, but that can be fixed by buying a USB port extender from Amazon or another retailer. Overall, I love this laptop and would recommend it! I’d recommend to wait until it goes on sale to purchase :)

Solid performance, expandable storage, upgradeable RAM - very good GPU, screen is good as long as you are not in any weird angles. Love the amount of ports you get on it also. Keyboard is a solid green with brightness levels.

Bought this for Black Friday for only $450, which is an amazing deal given the specs. Laptop seemed pretty fast and the keyboard was pleasantly clicky.
Plastic chassis creaked a bit when opening the closing the laptop, although not enough to be super concerning. However, the screen is a TN display - no matter how I adjusted the screen settings, the viewing angles were terrible - even when I was seated in front of the laptop itself. Screen also was dim.
Since my primary use case for this laptop was to use it as a laptop and not plug it into an external monitor, I ended up returning it. If you plan to just plug this laptop into an external monitor, this is a great deal.

The processor on this laptop is VERY FAST. Truly spectacular performance in a laptop package. The dedicated Nvidia 1650 video is much better than the processor based video cards but a step down from the 1660.
The screen is good for the price but a step down in brightness and viewing angle from the top tier displays.
The built-in card reader using USB2.0 for internal was the only oddity for a machine today. It is quite a bit slower than expected.
While this may sound like a negative review it is not- the laptop has amazing CPU, dedicated video and does a great job with video editing and rendering.
I would definitely buy it again, it does its job around the house and when mobile.

For $450 this is the best Black Friday deal this year, period! If you were one of the lucky people to grab this one at your local Best Buy, you scored an incredible value!
The CPU is incredible for productivity and it beats a lot more expensive mid and higher range Intel counterparts. The GPU is the bottleneck of the system, but for $450 you can't find anything better, anywhere.
I love the new Pavilion 2020 redesign, it's slimmer, well engineered, the port selection is very good too.
The screen is really the biggest letdown, if it was IPS and even at 60hz it would have been better compared to the TN panel on this model, but again it's $450!
I am glad that I was able to get one, and absolutely love it!

It is a good entry gaming laptop, comes with the basics, and run games in mid settings. It is fast for most tasks. Design is also pretty standard, besides the backlit keyboard, there is nothing eye candy about it. HP Could have done a better design even it is low-end gaming.
The SSD is very small and needs expansion after purchase, most games nowadays are huge, one or two games might take all the space after install. I found some videos online showing how to updgrade or add an additional HHD and seems pretty simple. Also it seems there is a simple way to upgrade memory.
Unless you get this laptop at a very good deal, if not consider how much you will spend by adding more memory and HHD to your numbers. Probably I could have afforded a another model with 16gb and larger hard drive.

Grandson loves it. He is able to do his classroom assignments and then play games as a reward. I purchased it when it went on sale. I neglected some bills, but education is important. Chatham County issued laptops and IPADS to students (loaner only). And I truly appreciate everything they have done and are continuing to do for our future generation. But, the schools laptop screen is blurred and freezes\ shuts off. Nonetheless, it is better than nothing. So yes, he and I both love the laptop and the many features (lighted keyboard). I couldn't afford two. So, I'm waiting to pay this bill off, and then purchase one for his sister. She was issued an IPAD to use for School.

I got it on sale for $450 which is an absolute steal for what you get. It’s pretty light and compact while maintaining the 15.6 inch screen which is alright for playing games. However, the exterior feels pretty plastic so it’s likely not that durable unless you’re careful. Only two USB ports which is not enough but ok for the price. It’s Ryzen so try to get a second stick of 8gb RAM for ideal performance and definitely stick a 2.5in HDD, it’s easy to open and place both. I was also not a fan of all the bloatware loaded onto the thing, especially for something meant for gaming, but a little know-how solves that. For $700 it’s good, for $450 buy it IMMEDIATELY because it’s definitely the best bang for your buck for just about anything released in 2020.

So... who knew that when covid-19 means that stocks of affordable laptops for business and education would dry up like a blister in the sun? Luckily, there's this smart option over among the gaming laptops. The same specs as the work-appropriate laptop we'd intended to get, but with a pretty great video card and the added feature of a fancy light-up keyboard to impress your virtual officemates, this was a great alternative. I'll likely check the gaming aisle from now on for equivalent options when purchasing new work laptops.

Good value when buy on a deal. as i bought it for 450 bucks primarily for gaming and it wasnt a good experience at all. I had a desktop with gtx970 and it felt way more responsive than this laptop. over all performace of the system was actually diminished by the single channel ram and sub par screen.
what i will recommend is only buy it when on deal. purchase an extra disk and an extra stick of ram (make it dual channel) and hook this up on a separate monitor for multimedia consumption..
to find out your ram specs install CPU Z software and it gives you everything u need to know about your ram. look for it on google and order the exact same stick from amazon or new egg. thats what i did

I got this during the Black Friday sale. I've only used it for day to day boring grown-up stuff (Excel docs, occasional photo stuff, etc...) and job interviews. It gets the job done and the price wasn't bad at all. I don't need all the bells and whistles and I think for the price I paid (I think $480 or so) and I felt I got my money's worth. Some people complained about the plasticky feel of it. I don't care. It turns on and it works (and does it well I might add). Note, I do plug into an external monitor and don't use it unplugged from it very much. Though when I did, it was fine.
