    Stuck in unit lottery limbo

I bought this knowing the compromises made to this model, such as the dim TN display and the creaky hinge. Yet I was not prepared for the number of defective units that were sent my way. First unit had a hinge that vibrated, creaked, and popped as it moved. And when I mean vibrated, I mean that I could feel it shaking when I moved the display. Each time I opened it, I felt like I was going to break it. Second unit had a muffled right speaker that was comparable to one from a $10 flip phone or a fast food toy. Third unit had a creaky hinge (though not as bad as the first unit's) and a bottom cover with a crack near a screw, which stripped as soon as I tried to unscrew it with an electronics-safe screwdriver. The worst part of this is that HP's warranty does not cover damage from "attempted self-repairs". I feel like I lost a game of unit lottery. Three times. And every time I "replay", I have to put my and my family's lives at risk by visiting my local Best Buy and hoping that the customer service employee can exchange it. It's unbelievable that HP delegated quality control to its customers at all, let alone during a pandemic when simply being next to someone or touching something can put someone's life at risk. What's most frustrating about all this is that the non-defective parts work amazingly well. The left speaker of my second unit could play at high volumes without buzzing, unlike my other two units. And the keyboard of my third unit had keys that were more satisfying to press than the ones from my previous units. It's just that the build quality on these laptops is so over the place that none of the laptops I received have all those strengths in one package. That is why I can not simply return it. Not only was the price amazing for the specs, I feel like I will get lucky and get an amazing unit if I'm patient. But the fact that my standards set for this laptop are so low that a passable one is "amazing" says a lot about the frustration that I dealt with for the past month. I will "play" one more time and pray that the next unit is passable. If it not then I will return it for good and avoid HP products in the future.

Great value for what I paid ($450) and is excellent for undergrad engineering students. Gaming performance is satisfactory-doesn't blow you away or anything. The only drawback is that the screen and viewing angles are pretty wacky but I guess the cost cut has to come from somewhere.

Nice starter's gaming laptop. Backlit keyboard is green and it is surprisingly good looking. Took me some time to get used to the keyboard though. Build quality is less than impressive. Display quality is also nothing to boast about. Cant complain since the BF deal was a nice one.

With one of the best processors of today, this gaming laptop as soon as it is turned on one sees how fast and efficient it is. Great presentation, sharp image, durable battery and an exquisite keyboard. A great buy for long lasting years.

Actually, I like the laptop because of the design, price, hardware, and upgradability. What I dislike is the noise from the hinge, when you open/close the lid, you can hear that from some friction in the joint, annoying, maybe only for my case?

Great product at a great price - this was purchased for my 13 year old grandson who will use it at school and for playing video games. No problems at all - easy set up. Fast and should be durable like all our other HP laptops.

I needed a gaming computer that could keep up with my newer games. My old computer couldn't run HD remakes of things like Bioshock and newer games without chugging or crashing. This computer keeps up for sure. It also handles my multiple tabs and windows with little issue. Battery could last longer, but I also understand I could keep it in more power efficient mode if I really wanted to, so it's a very minor critique. This laptop also gets pretty hot if you aren't using it on a flat, hard surface. Everything was packaged as advertised and there was no malware or weirdness. I'm very happy with my purchase!

Since day one of buying this for ONLY $450 this gaming laptop has exceeded my expectations, I do recommend upgrading your m.2 SSD and your 8gb ram, as 256gb SSD is only enough for 2 games nowadays and 8Gb of ram is just bare minimum so you might run the risk of crashing when playing high demand games. I personally upgraded to a 16gb ram by Crucial And a 1TB M.2 SSD Crucial P5 and this laptop is a beast, I’ve played COD Cold War Avg 71 FPS Ultra setting and 60fps GTA V Highest setting in case you want to know what you are working with here. Cooling system works great as well (It’s Dual Fan) and the 2 Ram Slots is also a great plus but for now I’m just using one slot. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND if you need a great performing laptop at a lower price range

Bought this Black Friday for $450. Added the matching 8gb samsung ram, bought a 500 gb SSD, and a logitech f310. So far it can play everything I own. Over the last couple years I've been collecting free games from epic, steam, gog, and alienware and this laptop can play all those games on med-high settings even the triple A ones. V-sync is key though to avoid screen tearing. I also decided to try xbox game pass and to my surprise all those games worked perfectly as well. The screen is not so great though. It can be completely washed out, however I knew that going in. For me I just connect it to my 27 in monitor. The cpu can get very hot, like 100 degrees Celsius especially on Triple A titles (Jedi Fallen Order always hit that for me). However there is a fix for that. Just disable the cpu performance boost(its default on aggressive) in processor power management under the power options setting. Once I did that the temps never got above 70 degrees. Now I know that there will be people out there saying that why would I throttle the CPU down from 4000MHz to 3000MHz and I would say simply the CPU even at this lower speed is not the bottleneck. It is and always will be the GPU, but I experienced really no drop in FPS. Lastly, these laptops always go on sale for 450-500 every black friday. 2019's was a 1050 gtx with an amd chip. Looking at the ads on black friday I would buy the one from Best Buy because they give the most recent laptop for this price point. For example I looked on amazon and walmart and they tried to sell this laptop with an intel chip (from 2019) and a GDDR5 gtx 1650 (this one has the GDDR6 by the way). I debated whether to build a PC or just buy one of these. I am very happy with my decision because no matter how much I tried I could not even piece together a rig comparable to this laptop for under $600 and those were black friday/cyber prices. Total I spent for the laptop was $540 with SSD and ram upgrades before tax. My setup: 16 gb Samsung ram 500gb Samsung SSD USB-C hub connecting mouse, keyboard, controller, and chill pad (cause let's face it it's only USB-C data @ 5gbs, no display) 27in AOC 1080 60Hz monitor Store games in a WD Easystore 4tb Next Black Friday I'll probably upgrade the nvme to 1tb, but I have played games from the WD easystore (5400rpm) and other than the loading times the gamplay and FPS look the same.

The other reviews about the screen being wonky were right, though for me it is manageable. Speakers are great, definately better than a monitors built in speaker. Mousepad is a little awkward for me, but I've never liked trackpads personally. Fans can sometimes be quite loud when gaming, but are never too obnoxious. Hinge is solid, and doesn't squeak for me. Definately buy on sale, i got it for $450 during black friday. Use the extra $150 you save to buy 8gb ddr4 3200mhz RAM (i found one for around $35) and a 2.5 inch 1tb HDD or SSD. (1tb WD Blue HDD is around $50). Not worth $699 in my eyes. Overall, slightly less powerful than my 3 year old gaming pc, and portable, and easy to use for other things like college.

It is very fast, long battery time for daily using. Screen is not bright but ok, it is made by plastic and you feel and hear! it. Otherwise, powerful and economic laptop for gaming.

Very good startup and installation times. Gets a bit warm using almost any intensive application after ~ 1 hour, but effective cooling cools the laptop down quickly after application(s) are closed/ most intensive use is reduced. Running games is almost lag free. The keyboard lights turning off if no typing is done for a few minutes is a nice feature since the light is very bright. Only issues are battery life while gaming and screen display lighting and contrast quality, but for this price I am fine with it as a 2nd monitor is almost standard for any gaming enthusiast, so I can live with the contrast being low at certain screen angles.
