A very unstable 2-in-1 laptop
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
From day 1 this PC had the following stability issues:
1) Touchpad was not working at the beginning
2) Crash with the green(!) screen of death (1-2 times)
3) Chrome crashes regularly
4) Touchpad working strange (when I just click it, Windows sees that as right-mouse-click) (all the time!)
5) Battery drains for no reason. Like this: wake up at have my PC charged to 100% during the night, open it, do some stuff, put it into my bag, take out at lunch time, and battery is almost dead :( (few times)
6) HP software is bad. Even the updater software just hangs.
7) Lots of other minor issues.
Would not recommend in for someone who don't want to have a painful experience of dealing with primitive problems with your laptop.
--------------
Here is my story why I initially chose HP Spectre:
Before buying this PC I was using Chromebook Pixel for more than 3 years.
And was absolutely happy with that except battery life.
This year I had to switch to PC or Mac because I now have to use some software that runs only on Windows or Mac.
I also wanted to have:
1) 2-in-1 for factor
2) LTE
3) Nice looking design
So my choice was HP Spectre X2. (m7 processor, 8gb memory).

Overall nice computer a small the Detachable screen is easy to get on off. It's fast and responsive. I do have have to mention I bought the hp pen that says it will work on this tablet and that's far from true. Save yourself $50. The keyboard doesn't seem sturdy and feels like the backing would come off easily in time. Battery power is was under what they are advertising. My biggest gripe would be I use Google Chrome for everything. I have read that crashing with chrome is very common on Windows 10. Very frustrating it crashes multiple times.
Outside of all that it's built sturdy, awesome kick stand and versatility is a huge plus. It's fast and responsive. I like this computer a lot, but probably should have looked around or wait til the computer went on sale (honestly feel price point is too high)

I purchased the m7/8GB/256GB version of the HP Spectre x2, ordering it online since no stores in my area carried it. While Best Buy's packaging could have included more padding, the HP packaging was absolutely excellent, with a strong outer box holding the inner box with some very nice cushioning. The computer arrived in perfect shape.
The computer itself is nice and thin and light -- it's very easy to carry around. By using the m7 processor, there are no fans at all, so it's as quiet as any tablet when it's running. I've been happy with the computer's performance -- it has run everything I've tried to run with ease. And I appreciate the 256GB of SSD space -- I also plugged a 200GB MicroSD card into the computer's MicroSD slot, and that gives me plenty of room for all of my programs and files.
I'm very happy with the physical design of things: For instance, I work with a lot of spreadsheets, so I really appreciate the 3:2 aspect ratio screen -- being taller than the usual 16:9 aspect ratio really helps. And the screen resolution is plenty high enough for the size of the screen -- I actually use it at the 125% size setting, which gives me plenty of on-screen real estate. The IPS screen is also very high in quality -- I'm very happy with the viewing angles and so on.
The stand works very well -- I have been completely happy with it. And the keyboard is very nice -- I'm happy with its backlighting, the key sizes, and everything. I touch-type on it with ease and accuracy.
In the end, I will use this far more as a "notebook" rather than a "tablet," and I'll use the 4G LTE service while I'm traveling. The computer has already become a trusted, constant companion for me.

I was looking for a portable computer that did not have a cooling fan but still had enough power to do the basics of browsing, Office, and Quicken. I have both the HP and a Surface 3 and the HP blows it away in all aspects except weight. The HP is heavier, but the extra power and bigger display make it well worth the extra half pound. I now travel with only the HP and a bluetooth mouse and dont miss the heavier laptops of the past.

A great 2 in 1 for some, but not all

Unfortunately I ended up returning this Spectre X2 for a Surface Pro 4, because of one significant draw back of Spectre X2, but despite of this, I still loved this detachable in a lot of aspects. In many aspects Spectre X2 actually smokes Surface Pro 4, and I'm gonna elaborate now.
What's so great about this detachable:
1. It is stylish, with whole seamless CNCed aluminium body which in my opinion, is more sturdy and much more good liking than a Surface Pro 4.
2. The keyboard and touchpad is just awesome! This device features a keyboard and touchpad that gives by far the best keyboard and touchpad experience I've ever had on any detachable, even including the entire Surface Pro line. The aluminium keyboard looks great, touches great and unlike Surface type cover, aluminium body won't get dirty and look cheap over time. A larger touchpad that supports multiple touch gestures beats Surface's type cover touchpad in that it is bigger, smoother and more comfortable. Unlike with Surface Type Cover, you can use this touchpad comfortably even when you have sweat on your hand.
3. Battery life. Not that the battery life of this device is great but it definitely beats Surface Pro 4 by a noticeable margin, I average 5hrs of work on a Surface Pro 4 with Core i5+8GB RAM, and I get ~6 hrs of work on a Spectre X2 with Core m7+8GB RAM, sometimes just 1 hour means a lot!
4. The screen. Yeah I know it's not retina, but it is very good enough for normal usage at typical view distance, actually, it won't have those text and icon scaling issues Surface had with some old windows programs. Surface had to use a scaling driver that constantly causes problems and crashes to solve this problem.
5. The kickstand. Believe me, you'll love this kickstand when you put your hands on it. This kickstand is even sturdier than a Surface kickstand.
What's not so great:
1. Stylus pen experience: This is the major reason why I cannot continue using this device. The pen has good specs, 2048 pressure sensitivity etc. But the palm rejection function was not as sensitive as that on a Surface Pro 4, you will have to put the pen tip very close to the screen to get good palm rejection function. Yes it detects your palm resting on the screen and ignores it even if the pen tip is very far away from the screen, but it will not exclude other parts of your arm and elbow, which sometimes will also rest on the screen, when, for example, you are writing on the left end of the screen with your right hand. This causes a lot of miss-input, the only way to avoid this, is to never move your pen tip away from the screen for greater than 2mm.
It also gives me some problem like the pen tip location detection jumps and messes up what I write, from time to time. It can be frustrating.
2. Thermal Throttling: Under Linpack stress testing of 15000 matrix size, both the Core m3 and Core m7 models had significant thermal throttling after a brief 20~30s of full throttle calculation, giving about 44~50 Gflops peak, 34~37 Gflops average. The steady frequency of Core m3 model was at around 1.35~1.45Ghz at 85~91% cpu usage. As a comparison, the surface pro 4 core m3 version pulls 50 Gflops average speed over a 3.5 minutes test period: no thermal throttling for more than 3 mins; The core i5 version of surface pro 4 gives 60 Gflops average speed for more than 7 minutes. Despite this thermal throttling issue, I still think the performance of Spectre X2 is sufficient for my daily work, and is not the reason why I had to return it.
Conclusion: I will recommend this to a friend who will not have a lot of note-taking need, and is not sensitive to floating point computation performance.

I love my Spectre 2x which has a 12 inch tablet screen, a nice backlit keyboard/cover. With a solid state disk, it starts immediately and the picture quality is really good. I got the 8gig memory/256 GB disk as the smaller one was just too small. I have Verizon 4G LTE available on a pre-paid basis which I can use when I travel but don't have to pay for otherwise. Battery is good and sound is good. I don't play online games, so can't speak to that. Windows 10 is fine, whereas the upgrade on my previous computer was terrible. And my Quicken goes with me when I travel instead of using the very inferior mobile app I had on my iPad.

Gorgeous alternative to Microsoft SP4

This hybrid tablet/keyboard alternative to those clunky 2:1 laptops both looks and runs great. I have had mine for a week and everything is running smooth as silk. Gave it a good charge once I got it and installed all the updates to it off HPs site, and many of them were very recent as well. Here is my take:
LOOKS and BUILD
- Beautiful aluminum casing. Looks like a Surface, but with that aluminum look you find on the iPads
- Aluminum=solid
-Rounded on the edges= much smoother to work with when used in tablet mode
-No breaking/loosening parts/hinges like on the 2:1s, don't want the keyboard, pull it off (its magnetically connected like the Surfaces)
MY PROS
- Display may be lower resolution than a Surface or a Yoga 900, but for its 12" its gorgeous, no need for more since then writing becomes maller
-Bezels on side of screen are noticeable and large, BUT easier to hold/use in tablet mode without inadvertently pushing the wrong thing on screen.
-M7 with 8GB RAM and 256GB HD. Plenty enough and fast enough for all home tasks: MS Office, Web browsing, movie watching, and Skyping...If you want to play processor intensive games however, you know you are looking up the tree here
- Two USB C ports...!!!Future proofing by HP. Apple Airs have 1. All others lack here.
-The BEST magneticaly attached keyboard I have ever seen or used...It build on a plank of aluminum! Go try it at Best Buy, it rocks. then compare it to the plasticky thing the Surfaces call a keyboard. Holds on for dear god as well, you could lift the whole Spectre by lifting the keyboard without the magnet giving out (but why would you). Comfort? Feels like any untraportable's keyboard, not like a detachable one.
- Did I mention gorgeous aluminum finish and design?
MY CONS (after a week)
- Some minor Windows 10 quirks, but the hold true for all recenty released machine and MS will work there out. Overall W10 is much better than W8 for any Mac users out there...Time to give it a try.
- Yes this hybrid has a SIM card! Unfortunately, the Mobile/Cellular service is tied to Verizon Wireless and that will run you $30 for 2GB at its lowest IF you choose to subscribe. I have heard that you could probably put a TMobile or ATT SIM in there, bur Sprint will not work. SO if you plan to use its cellular data capability keep this in mind. I just plan to tether it to my iPhone acting as the hotspot when needed, so I will not be activating service with Verizon.
- Battery life may be shorter than others. I go for about 6-6.5 hours on it, and that is enough for me.
-The speakers are weaker that other devices and WAY weaker than the great sounding iPad Pro...but who listens to anything put 3rd tier YouTube videos off a PCs speakers. It comes with a headphones jack, and you can also Airplay (via iTunes) or Bluetooth the sound to any of the wonderful wireless speaker systems out there...
I highly recommend this m7 unit vs. the m3 unit, since it has a larger hard drive and is definitely faster.
Enjoy yours!!!

I bought this because of the USB C Ports and Cellular capability had it for 1 day and sent it to HP for repair because when you turn on the cellular wwan it causes the screen to constantly flicker. HP had it for 25 days and all they did was reload video drivers and nothing else. So i returned the unit and bought a Surface Pro 4.

Returned 1st Spectre within 36 hours after the November 2015 Windows 10 update made the machine inoperable. second machine has worked well. The keyboard has a nice feel. W10has some buggy issues going from laptop to tablet mode. HP has grossly overstated the battery life at 10 hours. 5 hours with web surfing and some audio streaming is the best i can get.

I am not sure why everyone is giving this device bad marks. I purchased it through Bestbuy.com and I am very happy with it. I sold my Microsoft Surface Pro 3 and was looking at the Surface Pro 4 when I decided to research this device. I was able to get my hands on one at a Bestbuy store and loved how it looked, how the keyboard felt, and the specs were great so I bought one online since they didn't have the m7 in stock at the store. I have now had it for about two weeks and I love everything about it. It has two USB-C ports and I have an adapter that plugs into one of those that gives me HDMI out. Windows 10 runs smooth and it is a joy to type on. WiFi works well on it but you can also buy a USB-C to NIC adapter on Amazon if you want to connect it directly to your network. So far I can't say anything bad about this device. It is a better deal then the Surface Pro 4 and it looks better in my opinion.

Longtime BB customer, first review I've posted, I feel very strongly about this product and felt I needed to share.I've been a 10 year Apple veteran, have all their products and still love them. However for business nothing compares to this HP Spectre X2. Touchpad, fully capable OS, built-in LTE and decent battery make this a much more productive and capable machine on the go. The iPadPro cellular, plus expensive keyboard, no touchpad or mouse and limited business capabilities had me feeling frustrated on a recent 4 day trip out west. When I got back I thought if I could find a windows tablet with built-in LTE I would give it a shot. This was the only option I could find with LTE, very surprised about that. Anyway after a week I've fallen in love with this tablet, so slim, keyboard is terrific and windows has come a LONG WAY. Plus I'm pretty sure total cost is lower. Outlook and Office work a lot better than in OSX or iOS and I just feel like I can race through email replies, be online all the time without having to try to find a hotspot. I'll keep my older iPad Air around for Netflix and consumption activities and use this spectre to create content and run my business applications. Plus with the App "Duet" I can use my iPad as a second monitor and a BT mouse for the ultimate portable office. Would highly recommend.

I had an HP Envy 360 full laptop before purchasing this one. It had some limitations that have been resolved with the Spectre X2. I purchased the m7 model and couldn't be happier. It fits in my briefcase easily, is lightweight, and runs like a charm. I love the keyboard - it's more substantial than the Surface keyboards and with backlit keys, I can use it anywhere. The battery life could be better, but somewhat comparable to my laptop. I originally flinched at the price (I normally don't spend more than $1000 for a laptop), but am now satisfied that I got my money's worth. Highly recommended.
