This HDMI to RCA converter works exactly as expected. I have an older tv at my cabin that has RCA input only, I also have a gaming system that only has HDMI. I simply plug in the HDMI into the converted and then use the existing RCA plug I feed into the TV. Its as simple as that. The build of this converter is pretty standard, yet not cheaply constructed. There is also a USB C cable and power cube included that is needed to power the converter. The cable is 6 feet long which is perfect for when it comes to length needed. Please keep in mind that this does NOT work in an inverse fashion (RCA to HDMI), it is a one way device and does not up-convert, only down. All in all this device is pretty standard, yet does the trick. It can be used with DVD players, gaming devices, older camcorders.. pretty much anything that has an HDMI output that needs to be presented on a tv via RCA input. I would highly recommend this device if you are in the market for any sort of HDMI to RCA conversions.

    The Old-School Hookup

Whether you’ve got elderly family who refuses to upgrade so long as it works, you’ve got an old TV you picked up on the cheap, or you’re a retrohead like I am, odds are there’s an HDMI-only device that you would love to see working on the old tube TV. The Insignia HDMI to RCA Converter is about as simple a solution as it gets - no fuss, no frustration, no settings to adjust…just plug it in, and it works. While I’m a little disappointed by the lack of features, it does what it says it does with no functional drawbacks, and it’s priced fairly to boot. - Unboxing and Setup There’s so little to say here…in the box all you get is the converter box, a USB cable, a small power brick, and the instruction manual. RCA cables are not included, and the converter box itself has no buttons. It’s truly plug-and-play. In less than two minutes I had my laptop connected to my trusty 32” Mitsubishi CRT TV from 1996, and I was up and running. I would hazard a guess that this device shares at least some circuitry with older VGA to RCA adapters, as the range of possible input resolutions includes 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, and 1280x1024 alongside the customary 720p and 1080p screen sizes. - Video and Sound Quality As we’re going from high resolution, progressive scan input to the 480 interlaced scanlines of SDTV, image quality is not going to be about as good as your old TV can support (short of S-video, of course). Bringing the modern image down to the classic standard reveals just how unoptimized modern experiences are for low-resolution displays, but beyond that the image output is plenty fine and loses very little in the transition. Colors lose a little bit of vibrancy and edges are soft, mostly due to the limitations of composite (RCA) video sending both brightness and luminance on the same pin. One thing I didn’t like about this converter, and this could be a dealbreaker for many, is that thanks to its simple nature and settings-less design, the aspect ratio can’t be adjusted. This is fine on resolutions where it matches, but 720p and 1080p signals don’t letterbox and instead compress horizontally from 16:9 to 4:3. Nearly all CRT TVs expect the RCA signal to be at the 4:3 aspect ratio, and while you can adjust the picture geometry on some to compensate, you lose image size, crop, or both in doing so. This is not a problem for my use case - connecting a PC at 640x480 to emulate retro videogame consoles - but be aware. I was pleasantly surprised to find that audio pass-through is just about perfect. The converter doesn’t seem to introduce any line noise, and the volume seems about where it should be - perhaps slightly on the low side, which is better than amplification that could risk audio clipping. - Bottom Line This is a much shorter review than usual for me, but there isn’t much else to talk about. The Insignia HDMI to RCA converter does what it says it will, and it’s a handy solution to a niche use case. It’s a little bit pricey for what it is, especially with no option for aspect ratio and zoom settings that similar devices at this price point have, but if it works in your use case then it’s a one-and-done thought. Recommended!

Connected cable box HDMI output to older TV

It worked great to connect an HDMI only output cable box to an older TV with RCA inputs and without an HDMI input. The picture quality was better than expected and the sound was good. This adapter is one-way only using an HDMI input to an RCA output. It will not work in reverse to take an RCA signal and convert to HDMI. That is a separate adapter, and I discovered that Insignia also offers this adapter. I looked for a bi-directional adapter and found one at a ridiculous price, but not the Insignia brand. It is cheaper to buy both adapters than the bi-directional one. This adapter includes the USB type A power supply and the power cable to provide power to the adapter. The power supply output is 5 Volt 1 amp. I used the provided power supply, but you could use a power supply with a higher amp rating. It does not include the HDMI cable or the RCA cables. The adapter, the power supply, and the power supply cable are all black. The power supply does not have folding prongs, a feature that I like with my larger power supplies. This adapter does the job and is recommended.

Still need to see those HD images on an older display device? Then, this should work for you. It’s pretty simple to hook up. Get your RCA cables, cables, red and white for stereo sound, and yellow for video. Next hook up the HDMI cable to the source. Finally, the device needs USB power to work. There is one white light to let you know it has power. This only goes from HDMI to RCA, it is not bi-directional. The power adapter is included with a 6ft cable. I tried the device with 720p and 1080p source and it worked. It only does the following formats- 640×480@60Hz, 800×600@60Hz, 1024×768@60Hz, 1280×720@60Hz,1280×1024@60Hz, 1360×768@60Hz, 1600×1200@60Hz, 1920×1080@60Hz, 480i/p@60Hz, 576i/p@50Hz, 720p@50/60Hz, 1080i/p@50/60Hz. So. Make sure your output matches one of the above or it won’t work. It uses HDMI 1.4. Remember it converts to NTSC with is 720 x 480, so output is 480i/p. It’s not going to down convert signals above 1080p. The picture was fine for what it is, 480i/p. Sound was okay, but that could have been the speakers as well as the conversion. If you know the direction of data, HDMI to RCA, and keep within its parameters, 1080p and below, it should work fine for you. If not, try lowering the video and audio setting to get video and sound.

Works great for a CRT TV

Great device if you want to connect video game systems to a CRT TV. I picked this up as I plan to setup a retro gaming station with a CRT TV. At the time of testing, I only had a computer to hook up to a TV, and while it worked, the computer really struggled with what resolution to output which caused a not-so-great picture. This is a plug and play device, it took me just seconds to get it setup and sound and video to display on the TV. The audio portion sounded perfect and the display looked good but would probably be better with the right device connected. I have an older LCD flat screen (already has HDMI ports) that has RCA connections. I connected this device to that TV along with an older HDMI video game system and it worked perfectly! The picture was clear along with the sound. So, I believe the CRT TV I tested on could have been a bad unit (hasn't been used in over ten years) or my computer was just not sure how display on a CRT. However, after testing on my LCD flatscreen the device works perfectly and shouldn't have any issues with older TVs. I'm very happy with this device and the ease of use. It will make a great addition to my video game collection and for my CRT TV.

Very simple device that makes use of an older TV/VCR that has RCA connectors (red, yellow, white) that will allow hdmi out from a dvd/bluray device. I actually used this to send video from a bluray player to a video cassette recorder that had a dvd burner (dual deck). Quality on the dvd was not as good as Bluray but it worked for my grand child's dvd player that coax or rca connectors in. Just for giggles I used it to also burn a video cassette and the quality was not as good but it works that way too. But it allowed me to also take advantage of a old tube tv playing video from a very old computer with HDMI for the grand children to play games on a 19 inch tv. Reminded me of old time video game playing I used to do. It was an upgrade from a 13 inch laptop for the children. Note Does not allow RCA output to HDMI. Just takes signal from HDMI connection to something with an RCA connector. Do not expect quality of video to be as good as original due to connection video limitations.

A Perfect Necessity For Old RCA Input Televisions

With new hardware having different connectors, many people want to use new equipment without having to upgrade everything else to match. With the Insignia HDMI to RCA converter, you can solve this problem. The big thing to realize with this equipment is that it is designed to take a box that only outputs a signal in HDMI (ie a PS5, DVD Player, Xbox) and is to be viewed on a television or monitor that does not accept HDMI. If you want to play something like a camcorder on an HDMI television, this is not the product for that. You want an RCA to HDMI converter which is also available; however, this will not do that. The set up is relatively easy and most can do it without instructions. Out of the box, you have the converter and a power cord. This is a two-prong power cord and will require power to use. This is not a passive unit. No HDMI nor RCA cables are provided so you will need your own. After that, you simply connect the HDMI to the HDMI input and the RCA cable to the RCA output, and you are ready to go. As far as performance, the HDMI to RCA converter works very well. The picture is crisp and there are no ready real lag delays. The biggest drawback with this is it only does 1080P. But RCA televisions really do not do 4K, so you should not notice any difference. For gaming, there is no lag either. The picture was also not jittery. It doesn’t do 120 fps, but the video is still smooth enough. Since it only does 1080P, some things that have the ability to output higher resolution will be limited. The PS5 will not do 4K even though it is capable on other devices. You just kind of accept this when using the converter. Sound quality was also very good. You are generally limited by the television or monitor, but the sound is not distorted or breaking up in any way. In the end I was very pleased with the Insignia HDMI to RCA converter. This allowed me to use my high-tech hardware with older televisions. The picture and sound were just what I wanted and expected. If you have an old television and want to use a PS5 to other new hardware with it, this converter is the perfect tool to get the job done.

I got the converter by Insignia thinking I could finally hook up the old game system up to our tv. I did not realize that I had gotten a hdmi to rca convereter not an rca to hdmi converter. That was totally on me for not realizing such a thing existed or reading the product description better. However I was able to actually still use it at our other property to hook some of the newer game systems up in the extra room that we use for things! It is so nice to be able to send the kids or husband back there to play games on the old tv. Keep in mind this is not a bi-directional switch if that is what your looking for. It is a small unit that easily can be tucked behind the tv. I love the fact that they include the block to plug the usb to usb c power cord into as most things these days do not include it. The cord is 6ft so plenty long enough to reach an outlet or if you want it can simply plug into whatever device your using if there is an open existing usb port. It is nice to have that flexibility. I did not expect that it would include the hdmi or rca cords so I was not surprised by that but I know some people may think it should. It was super easy to hook up and we were able to start using the game system in a matter of minutes. They do include a little setup guide but honestly I think we all know how to do it at this point. Overall it seems to be a good little unit and love that it is giving us some options on where we can use devices without buying a new tv. I look forward to many years of using this.

Let's say it straight out, this is a "niche" device which will be useful to a limited amount of people, but thank goodness Insignia made it. So what is this converter and how does it work and why should you have one? Retro gamers, owners of the good old CRT TV's or older flat screens are the main target here. I have a Sony CRT I use to play older consoles and gaming devices. But nowadays, there are also many emulating gaming systems which run on a HDMI output. And this is where this great little converter is the most useful. It works by receiving the HDMI signal and converting it to a Audio/Video signal broken into 3 outputs (Audio L, Audio R and Video, respectively white, red and yellow) you can connect to your old screen or TV to enjoy the original look and feel of the games from the days before modern screens. An important note is that this device only works one way, you cannot reverse it and turn a analog signal from a console into an HDMI signal (there are other converters capable of this here at Best Buy). So, to keep this short, I have tested an arcade machine with HDMI output and it ran great, I also tried something goofy and hooked up a modern UHD Bluray player, and low and behold, that worked too, not great but it works. A couple of modern consoles ran nicely and the image was quite good. If you would like to use a HDMI device on an old non-HDMI display, I recommend you use this converter as it worked out great with everything I threw at it. Useful!

Breathing new tech into an old device!

Do you have an old TV or device that you're not using that still has the RCA outlets in the back? Want to hook your new tech up to it that uses an HDMI output? This device is for you! If you are looking for a way to plug an old tech with RCA converter output into a new tech with HDMI input...then this is the exact opposite of what you are looking for. There are those devices out there but this isn't it. My parents have an old projector in their basement that hasn't been used in quite a while but does have RCA connections to input. My kids were amazed that I was able to plug our ps5 into it and then they were able to play Astro Bot on a giant wall in their basement. The connections were sturdy and I saw no issues with the plugs on the device. The quality is about as good as you get from whatever device you are using. So if you're using an old projector or a giant tube tv to get that nostalgia effect, that's the quality you end up with! This device worked exactly as expected and the only thing I would note is that it does not come with any RCA cables. So remember to pick those up at Best Buy when you're there!

    Solid HDMI to RCA converter.

For the Mini Console or emulation enthusiast, the Insignia HDMI to RCA converter is a great way to enjoy newer HDMI-only devices on older TVs that lack HDMI or DVI ports. There is very little latency in the conversion, moving from 720p or 480p to 480i is solid (albeit not perfect), and the device is powered by USB-C so it’s easy to find a cable if you bring it with you and forget your power connector. Unboxing and setup: Connect the power cable and HDMI source to the box, then using the tried-and-true ketchup, mustard, and mayo RCA cables, connect this to your CRT TV. I would recommend against using this with LCD, plasma, DLP, LCoS/SXRD, or other display technologies as it can give your image a serious case of “dot crawl” and “the jaggies” that CRTs tend to not have because of how they work. You may ask yourself “Can I get something better?” and yes, yes you can. But you’ll also pay a lot more for it. The Insignia converter gets the job done well enough. For the money, however, you can’t really beat this converter from Insignia.
