Excellent Version of the Broadway Hit Musical

I've seen the play numerous times and (obviously) really like it. I was pretty excited when it first was released because the casting seemed perfect and I was a fan of the director's work. I wasn't disappointed. It's one of the best Broadway musicals turned into a film version that has been done. Everybody in it is stellar, and they have kept almost the entire Broadway score intact. I was anxious to see if it would be a good transfer to BluRay - and again, I wasn't disappointed. The colors are saturated and rich and the images are crisp and clean. The sound is spot on and crystal clear - I actually think it sounds better than when we saw it twice in a cinema. We've watched the BluRay twice - and enjoy it more with each viewing.

Saw this movie in theaters and couldn't wait to own it. With Best Buy's price match policy, it was a no brainer.

Fun movie combining several fairy tale type stories into one big movie. Great cast of characters. My only thing is some of the music isn't my favorite.

Last fall I saw a high school production of the play and really enjoyed it. So when I saw the blu-Ray I was excited. The acting was great, the story was great. overall, I enjoyed the movie.

This film followed the musical so well, and I loved every second of it! I have always loved the show and its soundtrack and was ecstatic to find out that Disney was making a version of it. I took my mom, who hasn't seen the musical, to see it, and she loved it as well, raving to her friends about it. I understand how people who have not seen the musical were thrown off by the last quarter of the movie, but it wouldn't have been Into the Woods if they deleted parts in order to keep everything "happily ever after" and PC. That's not the point of this show. It's theme is about growing up, from being innocent to learning the truth about the world. You learn that things aren't always as they seem and to be careful what you wish for because you just may get it, and it may not be quite what you expected. The characters' choices are all ridden with impending consequence. It's not bleak, it's reality, while reminding you of the good life holds as well. No this is not your typical children's Disney movie like the classic animated originals, and I was actually pretty surprised at the PG rating. I suppose they kept it because none of the deaths were shown at all, only implied or discussed, but never set on film. There were several children in the theater with me, which I was also surprised to see, but they laughed and enjoyed the film. I think the deeper and darker themes flew right over their heads, and they simply enjoyed the stories, as children do. If you have seen the musical or are a musical enthusiast, you will enjoy this! If you are an unsure parent, check it out beforehand. If you are looking for your usual, run-of-the-mill Disney movie, look elsewhere. Avoid unfairly rating a great movie because it wasn't the typical thing you expected. This movie is amazing!!!

Better transfer from stage to screen than expected. Stage still the better of the two though. Acting and singing excellent. We're talking Meryl here! However don't let the fact that it's Disney fool you. I think the marketing was misleading and the majority that were not familiar with the stage production thought they were going to see a light Fairy tale musical. Hence the mixed reviews. Most said the first half was great and fun but got too dark for children and muddled in the second half. This was never intended for children and the reviewers were obviously not familiar with the original. The musical on stage was exactly the same and the movie was faithful to it! It was intended as a fable for adults. The message " careful what you say children WILL listen" !

    Splendid Sondheim

This is the long-awaited film version of Stephen Sondheim's brilliant Broadway musical that blends the characters and plot-lines of four traditional fairy tales (CINDERELLA, JACK AND THE BEANSTALK, GOLDILOCKS and RAPUNZEL) with a new story about a childless baker and his wife who must collect props from each of those stories to lift a curse placed on their household by the hyperactive witch next door. I saw the original production in NYC, in the first month of its run, bought the original cast album, (an lp that I had signed by the composer and both of the stars at Sam Goody in '83,) bought both the laser disc and later the dvd of that B'way version, and saw several later community theatre and college productions. To say that i was eager for a great movie translation is putting it mildly. This does not disappoint. I saw it, the day after its Christmas release, and was eager to get my hands on the blu ray that could allow me to wallow in it forever, This is a really extraordinary disc. The image and sound are truly elegant, but most of the extras are merely unending hype, rather than any sort of meaningful discussion. And the commentary put me to sleep. But that's 'small potatoes' when the real riches are the film itself, Meryl Streep, and the wondrous Sondheim score.n

I saw this show when it first opened on Broadway, but was less than impressed with it (Sunday in the Park is still my favorite Sondheim), but I gotta say I like the movie a lot. There are still some plot points I'm kinda fuzzy about, and Hello, Little Girl is maybe the dreariest song in the Sondheim canon, but otherwise I've got a whole new appreciation for the work. The actors are uniformly good, with Emily Blunt a standout (but then, so's the role). Chris Pine acquits himself very well (who knew Kirk could sing?), and Meryl is, well, Meryl. All in all, an extremely pleasant surprise.

Great sound and picture quality on this disc and the story line is quite good, however, if you are not a huge fan of musicals, you are very likely NOT going to like this movie. I myself am very partial to musicals but found myself very close to turning it off more than once (probably because my husband kept glaring at me from across the sofa), but we watched it through to the end. As I said, good story, just VERY musical. Would I recommend this to a friend? Only if they are crazy about "The Sound of Music," "Calamity Jane," "The Music Man," and other very musical movies!

I purchased this movie never having seen it. I was looking forward to sitting and watching it with my family. I love musicals and I love a good story and the way this is intertwined with several fairy tale characters that we've all come to know and love is very interesting. However I was not enamored with the forced rhyming of the songs and the outcome of the entire story. Meryl Streep did a great job as the witch and the other actors were superb but the storyline lacked building my enthusiasm for the overall movie.
