Customers enjoy the Roomba 690's excellent cleaning performance, ease of use, and pet hair removal capabilities. The app control and scheduling features are also frequently praised. However, some users find the navigation could be improved, and the noise level is a concern for a few. The small dustbin size and price point are additional drawbacks mentioned by some customers.

Really does the vacuuming for you

We have several vacuums at home: Cordless sticks, corded and cordless uprights, shop vacs and some in between. They're all great, but none of them does the work for you. This is our first, and likely not the last robo vac. The point of these is to help in daily cleaning (or every other day). With this model, every Roomba they sell can be optionally controlled via WiFi from a phone (or from Amazon Echo or Google assistant). This is the entry-level model, so the price is more accessible. Other models have better cleaning brushes/suction, bigger dust bins and the top models actually create a map of the house so it doesn't keep on bumping info furniture. Besides the top model, this works by navigating in seemingly random patterns, and has some sensors to either slow down or more or less gently tap furniture and turns away. The cleaning cycle takes one hour. At the end of the cycle, it eventually finds its way back into its charging base and goes back to charge on its own. Interesting to watch the first time. We live in a mid-size house and we used the vacuum in two levels. This vacuum will cover the whole level. The first time we let it loose in the bedrooms, it did a pretty good job at cleaning under the beds, which is always a pain with other vacuums, and went under other furniture without getting stuck. On the main level, it did pretty good also, but it doesn't sense chairs very well so it ends up gently bumping into them. It has not scratched anything (the bumper works very well), the bristles are very gentle on the hardwood floor and hasn't toppled anything. It comes with a 'virtual wall', which is a tiny plastic lighthouse that signals areas that are blocked to the vacuum (the vacuum won't cross that invisible line). The lighthouse can be set to either a line or a perimeter. We're using it to block a playroom, which always has little toys on the floor… Additional light walls or chargers can be purchased separately. It's very easy to clean but the dustbin is rather small, so keep in mind you'll end up emptying frequently. It also comes with an additional dust filter. Not sure how often to replace, they look like they can last a long time. Also, it works with both Amazon Echo (Alexa) and Google Home, to start or stop cleaning schedules. The phone app can be used to program weekly schedules, check on progress, etc. Note: This modes does not 'map' the house, so the app does not show a 'cleaning map'. Only the top models do that. Keep in mind, specially if you have kids or pets, to avoid leaving things like toys, papers, etc. on the floor, or limit the areas where it can wander to. In all, very happy with the new Roomba. We'll likely get another to have on each floor.

    Loving my new robot!

So this review is 3 months post purchase. I wanted to give the Roomba a chance to fail, to do something annoying, or worse, have my expensive toy break. This didnt happen. 1. Setup. Setup is fairly simple. Just plug in the charging station AGAINST A WALL (preferably in a corner or you'll likely have to anchor it down) and set the robot on top of the charger (wait for the charging light to show up to make sure its docked properly). While you're waiting for your roomba to charge, you can insert the AA batteries into the virtual wall if you choose to use the virtual wall to make the roomba stay in a certain area or to prohibit the roomba from going into a certain area (I recommend a wall near pet bowls) and download the app and begin setting up the wifi connection. Once the roomba is charged, connect the roomba to the app with a few strategic button presses. Setup for me was a breeze once I realized that there is a ring of buttons around the main Clean button. 2. Operation. I prefer to turn on the roomba from the app and let it zip around the house at will. I dont use the virtual walls because my home has a fairly open floorplan and nothing really for the roomba to disturb if it bumps into them. Just FYI, this model does NOT create a map of your home and it does NOT remember where its gone previously. It just bumps and bounces around finding walls and travelling down walls. It does "seem" to have a pretty good idea of where bedrooms are though and will be cleaning along a wall and then will dart into a bedroom. So there is "some" awareness there, but I dont believe this model does the house mapping. So dont get upset at the robot for not seeming to "remember" where your furniture is and it bumps up against your couch for the 300th time. This isnt that model of roomba. Does it clean? Yes! Does it do a good job? Yes! Are you going to have to babysit your roomba as it cleans your house? No! However, be aware that the roomba is small and it might not get your entire dwelling in its 1 hour charge. And it may go right back at an area that it just cleaned an hour ago. If it misses an area in 2 passes, I'd recommend picking up the roomba and helping it out a little bit and place it where its missed if you need a certain area done. Also it doesnt make nice vacu-tracks as I like to call them. You're not going to get nice parallel lines of vacutracks. You'll get diagonal lines and maybe a horizontal, and then a swirl when it finds a particular dirty area then another horizontal and a diagonal. How does this roomba deal with the transition from hardwood to carpeting? Perfectly. I have about a 50/50 split with area rugs and straight up carpeted areas and straight up hardwoods. It has no issue making the transition and cleaning both effortlessly. How does it deal with thresholds? Pretty well. The roomba has large tires (for a low profile vacuum) and it can lift itself slightly to get over a threshold (like a bathroom or a bedroom transition from hardwood to carpeting). In addition to thresholds, I have a nasty rug situation in one room with a huge wrinkle that I cant get out due to furniture. Roomba navigates the giant wrinkle fairly well. Sometimes it will bump along the wrinkle until it finds an easier way to traverse it, and sometimes it just goes all 4 wheel drive roomba and powers over it. Either way, it deals with the wrinkle and thresholds wihtout issue. How about pet hair (or shedding human hair)? So far so good. The aforementioned problem rug had a BUNCH of pet hair on it because my dyson couldnt navigate the wrinkle well and so I just let it go. I can say thanks to roomba, the pet hair is gone from the wrinkle and the carpet looks nearly new! This was the biggest challenge I think the roomba faced and not only did it take on the challenge, it exceeded my expectations. 3. Cleaning the unit. Ok so the dust cup is small compared to any upright vacuum. You WILL need to clean the dust cup after about 2 hours of cleaning. If you have a shedding long haired human or a longhair pet, you WILL be cleaning the brushes more frequently. You WILL pull hair out from the edging brushes weekly. I think this is a fair tradeoff for me not dragging out the heavy vacuum and pushing it around the house every week. Cleaning is fairly easy. I was able to dislodge wrapped up hair a lot easier than on my Dyson. And you're not fighting a 30lb vacuum in the process. 4. Power and noise. I gotta say I didnt think the roomba was going to be very powerful. Definitely didnt think it would be powerful enough to tackle pet hair. It did very well. Sometimes the side brush will kick around a larger object rather than running over it to suck it up, but for the most part, there hasnt been anything that the roomba has encountered that he hasnt wanted to suck up. Speaking of which. This is a robot. It doesnt know the difference between dangling cords and chargers from dirt on the floor. Get your charging cords up off of the floor before unleashing roomba on them or it will suck up the cable. Same with clothing/drapes/errant socks It will try to suck up the clutter. And the cutter may get stuck around a wheel or a brush. It will alert you and will also tell you where the jam is located and how to clear it. Just yesterday roomba found a dryer sheet I dropped and didnt realize it. Got stuck around a wheel. The app let me know there was a jam and directed me straight to a how to guide for disloging the jam. Very nice! Noisewise... its not silent. But its quieter than my dyson (especially dyson's ungodly shutdown sound). I can work while the roomba is zipping around the house and unless its right next to me, it doesnt disturb anything. Heck, my husband can sleep with it zooming under the bed. Not sure I could, but hey now I can vacuum the house without disturbing him! Or my neighbors! With hub working nightshift and me working day shift, it left very little time for cleaning, and now I have no issue running roomba around even at night. Value: You're paying for convenience here. How much is it worth to you to not vacuum your house? With roomba, I can vacuum every day if I want. If you want a deep spring cleaning style clean, you will still need to drag out your upright or canister. But bringing out the big vacuum every 4 months or so is worth it and I maintain this clean with roomba. Will this replace the big heavy upright or canister? If you're a neat freak like me, No. But its good for doing maintenance so your work during spring cleaning isnt so back breaking. If you are looking for presentable and not eat off of the floors clean, then roomba might be able to replace your upright (though I would keep a handheld just for the areas roomba cant get into) On hardwoods I still chase the swiffer around, but thanks to roomba, I do it monthly rather than weekly. So for me, this is a good value. In terms of replacement parts, yes, you will be replacing brushes (especially that side one if you're running roomba around daily) and the filter. BUT, in 3 months I havent encountered the need to replace parts yet. iRobot's website is great in terms of the variety of replacement parts they offer (and the price isnt too crazy either) In the end? I love my roomba. I anticipate a good long relationship with it as long as I clean out the dust cup and clean the brushes regularly. For my home's layout, it works great. But I dont have stairs in my house or any challenging furniture setups. So for my purpose, roomba is a perfect match.

We named our new Roomba 690, Bob. Bob has become my best friend :) I can tell Bob to start cleaning from my phone while still in bed! He does a great job. Pros are : he cleans for me, he can function on my hardwoods, linoleum and my carpet, he gets under the toe kicks and our beds! Cons: Bob is noisy, he likes to get stuck under the corner of our couch, his bin is kind of small, but this is only a problem if you don't clean it out after every use.

Bought on positive review from Consumer Report but quickly discovered limitations. 1. It was not compatible with my Linksys router. I discovered this without iRobot help after three hours and used a different brand of router. 2. App has no features except schedule. 3. Did not even find certain rooms in my house. 4. Did not pickup small particles like sugar or items like smaller leaves. 5. Did not always make it home to charging station. 6. It wandered aimlessly and missed larger sections of the floor while repeatedly covering others. 7.Had small dustbin and no obvious warning it was full. Dust bin fell apart after third emptying. 8. Quite expensive for limited performance. Built around gimmick of Alexa link, which only turns it on. And turned me off. I am returning it for the Eufy. It's remote promises better control and it should vacuum just as well for $200 less.

I love our Roomba & love the job it does cleaning while we're away, but it gets stuck way too easily on small ledges & corners that may have a slight raise/incline to them. The constant notifications about him being stuck on your smartphone can be a pain, but that's fixable if you set your phone for no notifications. Still, we like to know what "Bruce" is doing while we're away. (Yes, we named him) I recommend it, but it's not without its small headaches. And the vacuum bin is not very big at all. You will have to empty & clean it out repeatedly & frequently.

My wife loves it (she hates vacuuming). This was fairly easy to set up. Wouldn't charge at first, but removing the battery and then re-installing battery fixed that. Seems to cover all areas pretty well. Can repeat same areas a little too much, but that's a minor quibble. Does a very good job of detecting things in the way and going around them. Detects the stairs and has not fallen down them. Does a fair job cleaning, but I didn't expect flawless cleaning on such a small device, especially since this is not a top of the line model. The heavy soil button is a nice feature for deeper cleaning in one area. The dust bin fills up after one use, so be prepared to empty after each use. I used the laser detection tower in front of a china hutch the Roomba unit tended to get stuck under, and that stopped that from re-occuring. On sale for $75 off is always a good thing.

Love the Roomba. Wish it had a larger dust bin. Won't work with the app on an analog phone. Analog is Bluetooth, need Wi-fi app. It does a pretty good job. gets places that are hard to reach. Has gotten stuck under the bed several times and I have to get someone to get it out. Nice to have something that works without me behind it.

Converted house to lvt plank. Good bye carpet!!!! Our Roomba named Hillary works hard every day to pickup dust and pet hair. Does a good job but will occasionally get wedged or unable to find base. Generally works well. Would be nice to have a larger bin. Thought our dog would not tolerate Hillary but Bill pays no attention to her.

My wife loves her new roomba. It has a feature you can set up a cleaning schedule with. Anytime we need to clean outside the schedule we just use the app which is nice. It has done a very nice job cleaning our hardwood floors. The debris compartment is small and must be emptied every day for maximum efficiency.

The app works nicely and can be program to clean on a schedule. I was surprised of how much dirt can this thing pick up. I like the fact that goes under beds, chair and sofas to clean where a regular vacuum cleaner would not fit. The only part I don’t like is that it has a very small canister that I empty every time after running the vacuum. What I like the most is that I don’t have to do the work and thats a plus.

Easy set up out of the box. The mobile app is easy to use and requires limited effort to set up via your home wifi network. The app even lets you know that it can not be set up on 5g networks. Most wifi routers allow you do use both speeds (but you'll have to consult your router on how to set that up). The Roomba has physical buttons to start and stop clean, and to return back to the charging base. The app also does the same, and includes set up for automatic clean up, you pick the days of the week and the time to clean. You get a notification when cleaning is done (or if a problem occurs). I have stairs going down, when the Rooma approached the edge, it quickly backed up. I was so terrified that it would fall to its doom, but nope, it sensed the drop off and avoided sure death. The collecting canister is rather small and the filter is fairly thin. It filled up quickly when it went under my couches (as I never cleaned under there) It was a good job for a small room and once you run it a few times a week, the amount of debris collected will decrease. I have hardwood floors and it usually picks up hair and other small particles/dust. I cant comment on use for carpet. It takes my about 5 min to sweep my apartment. I only sweep a few times a month because I hated doing it. I set my Roomba up to clean twice a week and love it. I get 30min/month of my life back thats not dedicated to cleaning the floors!
