It wouldn't read a couple of my thumb drives, and I don't know why because I was able to read them with another hub. I got it on sale, so that was good.

That's great news! I actually use one for my own PS4 for the same thing as well as a JUP60 for charging needs when I'm in the middle of a gaming session and to hook my Nintendo Switch and my phone to charge as well. If you're looking for a charging accessory, that would be my recommendation as well! Good luck and happy gaming to your son!
