Disappointed
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This receiver did not work correctly right out of the box. Even the tv itself would not reliably sync up with it. I made calls to both JBL tech support and Best Buy Geek squad and neither could help get it working. Finally JBL recommended returning it which I did. Which leads to the one bright spot which is Best Buy's AWESOME return policy and customer service. Replaced the receiver with a competitive brand which worked right the first time.

Great AV Receiver for the New Generation
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great receiver, found new "open box" for the great price. My speakers came alive with this technology marvel. Completely different experience compared to my previous AV receiver - adjusted for young generation for phone/ipac control. Application can be further upgraded (missing volume), but this is just the first version.

Compact, powerful receiver with flaws
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The sound setup process is a joke. To truly get the best sound out of this receiver you need a professional to do all the measurements properly. With my iphone mic I was able to get a respectable sound profile out of it. I like the look and digital amp power of the receiver, but the menu ui, sound setup, and bugs were a big nope from me. The $799 price was too high in my opinion and thats why I returned it.

Horrible, no good, very bad, absolutely awful
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have no clue how there are so many positive reviews, it quite honestly seems fishy. My immediate reaction to this AVR was how poor it sounde. No charecter, no depth, sounds like a Vizio soundbar. Then you get into the slightly more minute things, like the inability to game (atleast with a Series X) as the screen cuts out every 30 seconds as it toggles on and off game mode repeatedly. Then you realize there is no input button the on remote, that the UI is awful, and only a few hours into ownership you realize that you have very likely purchased the worst 7.2 chanel reciever currently on the market. I bought it because it looks like the next generation of AVRs, yet it performs like it is 20+ years behind.

Holy Cow...
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This review is for the JBL MA710, 7.2-Channel 8K AC Receiver. Although I have not experienced every available receiver on the market, I can say with all certainty that it would be improbable that I could find a better receiver than the MA710. For over 70 years, audiophiles have consistently chosen Harman products because of their undeniable high quality. The MA710 is simply an extension of their commitment to provide superior sound experiences, not just for the “average” person, but also for the high-level sound enthusiast. I was pleased as I began unpackaging the MA710 as it was quite apparent that much thinking and development had been employed to make sure that even under the most extreme shipping processes, the receiver would arrive at its destination in undamaged and perfect working order. I was also pleased to see that JBL utilized the least amount of packaging materials possible to lessen the impact on the environment. The perfect marriage of thoughtfulness and utility. The box contains the receiver, power cord, Quick Start Guide/Safety Sheet, Remote Control with batteries included, and three antennas – one for Bluetooth, and two for Wi-Fi. Before unpacking the MA710, I had already mapped out a rough plan for placement of all the components and had prepared accordingly. Because you are reading a review for a very high-quality receiver, I don’t think I need to stress how important this is. After unpackaging and placing the receiver in its correct location, I began familiarizing myself with the unit. JBL kept the design of the MA710 elegantly simple. It has a rather simple-looking display…lighted blue lettering against a black background. As undistracting as possible. Across the face of the MA710 there is a limited number of buttons. I find I am quite happy with this. I am one of those who believes the less complicated a device is to navigate, the better. There is the Power button, a Back button for going back to previous menus, etc., a Menu button, a display Dim button (display off, and two intensity settings), and two Surround mode buttons for navigating back and forth between the various audio output options. The unit also has two knobs, Input and Volume. The back of the unit is a bit more complex. Inputs include USB x 1, Ethernet Socket x 1, Phono and Ground x 1 each, Analog x 4, Coax x 1, Optical x 1, and HDMI x 6. Outputs of course include all the speaker outputs including the subwoofer output, HDMI output x 1, and a “Party” output. When I first saw the Ground connector, I wondered why the unit would have to be grounded, but then I realized that because of the possibility of “noise” from the phono input, one had to be included. So, having unpacked the unit, properly placing it in its spot, and going over/through all the various menu options, it was time to put it to the test. This is where it gets a bit murky. It would be impossible to test it without speakers. And then of course, the sound results will depend on the quality of the choice of speakers. Thankfully I was able to test the unit out using the JBL Stage2 280F Dual 8” Floorstanding Loudspeaker x 2, Stage2 240H Dolby Atmos Enabled Height Module x2, Stage2 250B Dual 5.25” Bookshelf Speakers x 2, Stage2 245C Center Channel Loudspeaker, and the Stage2 200P 10” 300W Powered Subwoofer. Setting up the speakers was the most time-consuming part of the entire setup. There are three types of connectors you can use for connecting the speakers to the unit… “Banana” clips, “Spade” clips, and of course bare-wire. I opted for the bare wire only because I did not want to make another run into town after going to BestBuy to purchase speaker wire. (A 40-minute one-way journey!). After spending the better part of the day cutting and running wire after placing all the speakers in their respective locations, and connecting everything, it was time to see just how spectacular the MA710 really is. As I said before, it is an absolute to download the JBL app. This is where JBL gets their first accolade. After going through the setup process, I began exploring the app. I was (and still am) dumbstruck with all the included free radio and podcast stations!! I’m serious… there is something for everyone, every kind of music genre, and podcasts covering everything from history to the occult. I have discovered genres and topics I didn’t even know existed. All of this for free!! THANK YOU JBL!! But the app isn’t only about the music and podcasts, it is also important for setting up the unit, downloading and installing updates, and so forth. Not only is this where I give JBL such great props, it is also where I have to mention the first bothersome aspect of the app. The app basically has no onboard controls for managing the sound. That is to say, you cannot do any of the technical speaker setups, and there is no equalizer for various music genres. I suppose this would have made the app much more difficult to construct, but it is still disappointing that in spite of all the great things offered via the app, it is so lacking in other areas. Although in reality it is possible to simply connect all the speakers and start listening, without utilizing the detailed setup functions it would be impossible to enjoy an optimal well-tuned listening experience. But to put this theory to the test, I did exactly that… I began listening/experiencing the MA710 without going through the speaker setup. I chose to connect a BlueRay player to the unit and watch a movie that I experienced for the first time in an IMAX cinema. I have watched this particular movie many times using various soundbars w/subwoofers. Although for home the experiences were okay, they were never spectacular. So again, without speaker setup, I began watching the video. Holy cow!!! I was taken to a listening place I have never been before! The clarity was astounding, the bass was deep and trembling making even the floor vibrate. I began increasing the volume just to see how far it would go. Now, the Volume control will go to 99. I had it up to 79 and had to tap out. And what was so remarkable about this is that there was not even one hint of distortion, not one bit of squelch, feedback, fuzziness…nothing! How could this be? Because like I said when I first began this review, audio connoisseurs have been choosing JBL (Harman-Kardon) for over 70 years, and for this very reason. In all honesty, I wasn’t sure how it could get any better. I also tried out several music tracks covering multiple genres, and the results were just as good. I could tell that some of the sound was a bit off-kilter, and so afterward I chose to go through the speaker setup process. I think you should be forewarned; the speaker setup was a bit tedious for me. This is because I had to do it all using the MA710 display. This is where an app version would be so welcome. JBL strongly recommends utilizing an OSD using a TV or computer monitor. Although I connected the unit to a newer 4K smart TV, there is no option for OSD (On Screen Display). I even tried using a computer monitor, but no success. I’m sure it is probably something simple, but I just could not figure out how to access the OSD functionality of the TV or monitor…even after an exhausting search of the internet. During the setup, you will go over each specific speaker, its placement, and exact distance measurements. After inputting all this data, the sound will be calibrated and will deliver a customized sound imaging experience. So, after some time I concluded the setup along with all the other recommended setups and tried out the unit again. Now, this wasn’t a matter of splitting technical hairs, so to speak, but it was a tangible distinction between the simple “plug and play” experience and the tuned programmed experience. A triple “Holy Cow!!!” The delivery became other-worldly, and I heard sounds and variations I had absolutely not heard before while watching this particular video. “Tings” of a ring hitting a stone that filled the room whereas before it was simply interesting. Voice inflections, circumferent wind sounds…everything was, well, perfect! This simply would not be possible if JBL had not invested itself deeply in ensuring that those who purchased the MA710 discovered a listening world they may not ever have experienced before. I can say this is true for me. Other than the app demerits (and the subsequent setup difficulties), there is nothing negative I can say about the MA710 7.2-Channel AV Receive with Dolby Atmos. Can you spend more money on a competitor’s brand? Sure. But you will not enjoy a better listening experience. As far as I am concerned, if you are serious about upping your home theater/music-listening experience, the JBL MA710 is the way to go.
