Love the unit but CarPlay has issues

I love the unit and would buy it again. The only complaint I have is that CarPlay loses connection to the phone intermittently. I love having CarPlay (it also has the equivalent for Android) and the navigation. The Kenwood/Garmin traffic feature is horrible but the Garmin navigation is great. Those are the basics, for a longer review, keep reading...
I got this because I kept having to futz with my phone when doing music, messages and navigation and it was getting dangerous. I ordered the system from Best Buy online and also ordered the installation service at the same time. It asked me a bunch of questions about my car and what I wanted and suggested other parts I might want/need.
There are several problems with ordering installation online. I would call and do it over the phone with the local installation guy at the store.
First problem: The website can't tell you that your selected store does not have an installation department. It just tells you that there are no appointments available on the selected day.
Second problem: It's hard to know the parts you actually need for the install when you're doing it online. When I got to my appointment, the guy asked if I had bought the faceplate kit. I didn't and they didn't have one in stock so I had to re-schedule for next week. The kit was $50 at best buy but the installation guy was nice and gave me the part number. I ordered it online for $25.
I also needed a converter box and extra installation charge to make the steering wheel controls work. Best Buy had that and also had a decent price for it so I got that from them.
The second appointment went smoothly but with the extra parts and install charges the install alone came close to $300 making the whole thing almost $1,000 out the door (still worth it...).
Again, I love having the CarPlay. For those that don't know what it is: You connect your phone to the stereo with a USB cable (it also charges the phone) and certain apps on your phone show up on the stereo with a driver friendly user interface. Any apps that you don't need or would be too distracting while driving aren't included. You get (text) Messages, Music, Maps (anything that starts with an 'M' I guess...) Podcasts, Audiobooks, Phone & Pandora. You're not going to get things like Facebook, Mail or Google Maps.
For text messages, it's all voice. Siri reads you the messages and asks you if you want to reply. You can only reply by voice. If you want to read the actual words, you'd need to look at the phone. Phone, Maps, Podcasts, etc all work much better than trying to use them directly on the phone. I haven't played with Pandora yet using CarPlay.
You use the touch screen on the unit to control things both with CarPlay, Android Play and the unit itself. You can also use your steering wheel controls as long as you get a converter box (~$70 + $60 installation) installed. Siri is also there too. I can be driving along and press the voice button on my steering wheel and ask Siri "What's 100,000 divided by 14,000" and she'll tell me (I was wondering how many years it would take to reach 100K & I drive 14K a year).
The problem I have with CarPlay is that it randomly disconnects. Usually it comes back after a minute of "rebooting" but there have been times where I manually need to disconnect and reconnect the cable to get it to work. I can't yet figure out if it's a cable problem or software problem. This is an issue with all sorts of CarPlay systems and I've read all sorts of reasons online. A newer cable has reduced it to about once a day. I'm thinking of having Best Buy re-do the USB cable.
I actually like the Garmin nav better than Apple or Google maps for turn by turn. It shows you the speed limit and doesn't tell you to turn 3 times for each turn. The voice guidance just seems much more reasonable. I also like the display better.
What sucks is the traffic. It's unusable. If it thinks there's traffic up ahead (there usually isn't) it will beep at you every 10 seconds. For example, I was doing my 10 minute drive to the gym on surface streets on a sunday morning with no guidance but the Garmin kept beeping and telling me there was traffic ahead. If I want guidance that takes traffic into account I use Apple Maps. Otherwise I'll use the Garmin. At least there are options.
Private types beware: The Garmin does keep a log of your trips whether you're using the nav or not. It does let you clear the log but not individual trips.
The unit also plays CDs, CDs with MP3s on them and will play DVDs on the screen. It wouldn't play a Blu-Ray I tried. I only tried it in my garage so I don't know if it turns off the DVD feature when you're moving. I think it does have the ability to connect to rear screens for kids and those will keep playing the video.
You can also connect it to your backup camera or even get one installed while you're installing the unit.
All in all I love having the thing. I just hope I can get the CarPlay disconnection issues resolved.

It has reasonable maps in Mexico along with the US maps. The english spoken street names for Mexican streets are a bit odd, but usable. I don't find the user interface to be intuitive, but there is plenty of help on the Internet. The reason I installed this radio is because it had both GPS and Bluetooth voice activated phone connection. The steering wheel controls on the Nissan in which the unit is installed do not work well for the bluetooth phone connection and the voice dialing is much worse than the factory installed radio. That is the major disappointment. Regarding my comment that I would not recommend this to a friend: I would recommend buying the factory installed unit. However, if that isn't an option, this is not a bad alternative. The other disappointment was that this radio seems reasonably priced, but after paying for the installation and the numerous cables and dash modules for installation, the price more than doubled.

I have an older model Lincoln with very little mileage but in great shape so I want to keep the car. I wanted to be able to have navigation, backup camera and blue tooth. This had everything I needed. It's easy to use and I'm learning more about it every time my grandsons get in the car with me. I would strongly recommend this product to anyone that's comfortable with their older car but would like to have the modern equipment to make your driving experience better!!

Upgraded my collegiate daughters automobile with Kenwood Nav System and backup camera. What a difference in sound and safety for her. Blue tooth for the phone is great, Garmin nav system is outstanding, and the backup camera feature provides a full background view for her. It was installed very professionally. No problems have been experienced. We've had it on her car for a month. Would recommend product and installation service.

This is an awesome system with navigation, backup camera, can play dvd, bluetooth. I use Bluetooth to talk on phone and it is so clear they can not tell I am driving unless I turn on my blinkers to make a turn.lol. at First the nav system was telling me everything in kilometers but I found a utube video that showed me how to change that. The instructions are very very basic in the box. I still have not figured out how to save addresses so I will lookup on utube
Love backup camera as where I park at work backs up to a wall so very nice to not have to hang out the door to make sure I do not hit the wall. It does not have the beep beep sound i have hear in other cars but no big deal. Still a ton of features to figure out as I have had for 3 weeks. The radio sound is better and I really like I can save well over 14 stations. By the way I have 2007 dodge ram truck, and instead of spending 40k for a new truck I just added an upgrade and LOVE IT.

I went and bought the kenwood dnx573s. For what it offered and the amount I paid. I was very disappointed. So I returned it. The gps from Garmin was out of date. Old features on the map screen. THEN I SAW THE AVIC5200 NEX. I can tell you that this is the best unit out there. And it is priced right. Lots of features. They offer firmware and software upgrades. The mapping feature is super. Very easy to use. IPhone hooked up instantly. Carplay is great. Can't wait for more apps. Installed it myself in a 07 tundra. It took less than 1 hour. The sound is awesome. Very pleased with my purchase from best buy.

The sound quality is much better than the original radio that came in my 2016 Nissan Frontier. I like the built in GPS for local travel and for long distance trips the Car Play Google Maps that are displayed when my iPhone is connected via Lightening Cable are constantly updated and show traffic issues. I did not renew my XM radio as streaming Pandora or similar is Super. I have recommended to a neighbor who bought one and also likes its features. The Best Buy installation was excellent. You would not know it wasn't factory.

I have owned several Navigation units and this one is by far the best I've ever owned. I replaced the factory unit in my 350z with this one. Best decision. Made my stock Bose system come to life. I was very impressed. Apple car play is AMAZING!!! I highly recommend this head unit it does not disappoint!!!!

My old headunit stopped working suddenly. When purchasing a new one I know I wanted Bluetooth and navigation, this one was the perfect match and then some! It plays dvds, you can make phone calls by bluetooth after wiring the microphone. What I like about the navigation is it tells you the upcoming streets at the bottom, giving you a heads up. It has a great tuning option if you have a subwoofer, you can adjust the colors, and much more. I actually recommended it already and my mother in law bought it too! My only issue with it is when 2 phones are connected via Bluetooth I have to go back through the options to switch which one I want connected for audio.

This unit has built in Garmin navigation and puts out a lot of clean power. I like the variable lighting control that allows me to match the unit illumination to the rest of my dashboard at night. It makes the unit look like it was installed by the factory. The only reason I withheld a star is because visibility in daylight is a real problem. I solved this problem with an add on from NuShield, Special1 136 x 77 DayVue for Kenwood DNX572BH, DNX573S R1100002680 1
NU100M Klear Screen
It is easy to add and cost under $20 and above all, it works like a charm.

The Kenwood is a sweet unit, and pretty intuitive. Install looks great, and the Garmin Nav is easy to use. It will take some time to configure and get into all the great features. One of the best parts was the install at the local BB. The sales guys all have their "thing" going on, and are certainly helpful, but Alex that runs the install shop was super helpful, very knowledgeable, and really is a great asset that I hope the retail side shows appreciation for.

Great unit, almost too good. Not a perfect fit in my 2008 Ford Taurus, but close. Put my iTunes collection on a 200 gig micro sd card. Love it plays library perfectly and pretty easy to search and find album and songs. Comes pre-set in the crossover setting where sound is focused on the rear of the car, but can be fixed in the in depth setting in the crossover setting. Wish the installers would have set it for normal sound an let me make changes if I wanted to. I spent about an hour and a half trying to figure it out. Great unit and I would highly recommend.
