I absolutely enjoyed this movie. Reminds me of a Jurassic Park meets Indiana Jones movie. The special effects are fantastic. They did a stellar job on the 4K transfer. The video quality is gorgeous. It rivals any 4K movie out today. I’m very glad I picked this up. The SteelBook looks awesome also!

Ok... I remember watching the King Kong version from 1976 as a child and having my mind blown thinking that it was amazing. Mind you I was 2 going on 3 (lol), but it was so cool to see. Then as an adult the great Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings movies) decides he is going to make his vision of King Kong. OMG!!! This movie had adventure, monster fighting, and a young Naomi Watts. What wasn't to love? this movie hits on every mark so well that I felt that there was never a dull moment. I was awaiting the 4K transfer of this movie and now I finally have it, plus BEST BUY knocked it out of the park with a stylish steelbook which I love. I've seen some reviews where people who purchase this steelbook complained that the title was not on the steelbook, but I am glad that BB did not do that because it gives the cinematic emotion between beauty and the beast the moment it deserves. Good Job BB!

Terrific 4K presentation. The street scenes at the beginning were eye opening in terms of video perfection, and needless to say the audio was great. This is actually a rather sad movie in some ways. A love story, for sure, but also a demonstration of lost love or impossible love, or love stolen. At least the man and woman were together at the end. Let's hope the merger lasted. One also has to wonder just what Karl had to face in terms of legal issues later on. I can only speculate about what a sequel would be like: the perils of bringing an oversized animal into the USA and the legal ramifications. Anyway, the acting was superb, and, well, it is hard to imagine a more beautiful female face than what we had with Naomi Watts. Note that I did not check out any of the "extras," but I am sure they are informative. Later, maybe.

King Kong ultimate edition blu ray four stars
Naomi Watts, Jack Black Adrien Brody and a Gentle giant (Peter Jackson) with the late, great Andrew Lesnie managing visuals embarks quite literally on a quest to find an island stranger than any other, in this the penultimate (as of 2019) Hollywood retelling of the myth of the blonde and the beast on Skull island. Jackson as his usual shot a longer movie than its distributors wanted to show on theaters. This blu ray runs longer by roughly a dozen or so of minutes. Included on this edition is the theatrical cut also. So if you enjoyed the film before, and is quite amusing, and have ever been curious of what did Jackson really wanted to tell, this is the best edition to get great price-value ratio.

Older films, like King Kong (2005), don’t usually benefit much from a 4K upgrade and cost a lot more than a Blu-Ray for comparable audio / visual quality. That said, I purchased this film specifically because it was released on Best Buy’s Limited Edition SteelBook copy and it is, in my opinion, amongst the absolute best action drama films released within the past twenty years. The audio and visual special effects are phenomenal. I fully expect the walls, floor, and, ceiling to shake violently as I watch King Kong on my all-4K home theater (75” Sony UHD TV; Sony speakers & subwoofer; Oppo 4K player; AudioQuest cables).

Well, Kong Island, Mighty Joe Young, the original, the remake with Jessica Lange...this is head and shoulders above them combined. I like the original second-best. Great action, computer graphics are virtually seamlessly inserted save for the occasional scene of Beauty and Kong's hand. No stretching or other impossible graphic distortions. Terrific acting. Naomi Watts was wonderful, and even Jack Black's mugging was toned down. Very nicely directed and photographed, colors and sound are great in 4K. I loved it in the theater and I love it now.

THE definitive edition!

Let's start with a truth. I'm not the one for an unbiased opinion on Jackson's King Kong. I LOVE this film. One of the top 10 of films in my lifetime (I'm 47 for reference).
I adored this film in the theaters. When it released as a Deluxe Extended 3-Disc Edition DVD, I gobbled it up and was STUNNED at just how much the studio forced PJ to cut. Certainly, the runtime was long enough, even after the cuts, and it wasn't the quantity of the edits, it was the sheer quality of what was pulled out. Mind you, had they left in these excellent scenes, almost all based around action, and made those edits elsewhere, say from narrative, it FEELS like we would have been left with largely a 3hour movie trailer of fights.
Still, much like his Lord of the Rings films given the uncut treatment, when it comes down to it, it's almost unfathomable studios demand PJ make ANY cuts, as they invariably remove action scenes and still leave us with lengthy movies that should come with built-in intermission breaks. Removing dinosaur stampedes, raptor attacks, and Piranhadon fights is shameful and should cost people jobs that make such decisions.
After moving to blu ray, they released a KK disc that featured both the theatrical and extended editions, but was missing the ENORMOUS amount of extras that came in that 3-disc DVD set. (It has somewhere in the vicinity of 15 various bonus features). So, I grabbed that.
Then came the Ultimate Edition blu ray, which had both film versions and restored the majority of the 15 bonus features from DVD, and I grabbed THAT.
So, of course, after I upgraded to 4K and saw the low asking price of this- $16- for one of my all-time faves, I couldn't NOT add that version to my collection, now could I?
Now, this appears to be the "definitive (almost) definitive" edition. It's still the Ultimate Edition as far as extras, (I *BELIEVE* it's missing 2 or 3 small bonus features from the ancient 3disc DVD version, hence why I kept that set,) while upgrading the film to 4K. (Note: like with the regular UE blu ray of Kong, many of the featurettes are NOT upgraded, and remain in their standard definition format!)
Is it worth it?
As I said, I'm biased. BUT, still, at more than 1/2 off the price of newer 4K titles, I believe yes... yes, it is. Kong is gorgeous in 4K, with many scenes not this jaw-dropping since I saw it in the theater. However this transfer was handled should be THE standard for older, pre-4K films moving to the new format. My 4K library is still growing, but this was one of my favorites as it rolled along.
I simply cannot find a reason NOT to double, triple, or, like in my instance, quadruple dip on this film if you have 4K.

Peter Jacksons remake of the classic film that shows the story of beauty that killed the beast is displayed in stunning 4k picture. The cgi in this film is made even better with the rich brights and darkseid presented in the 4k restoration. Terrific performances from the entire cast, and pulse pounding action make a great film. Even better, the bonus disc boasting 13 plus hours of bonus features from the ultimate edition bluray release is carried over to this release. All in an awesome steelbook that features amazing inside artwork. A must own for sure

It's not an amazing movie, but Peter Jackson did a pretty fantastic job capturing a spirit of grandeur with this movie. Surprisingly, the rather excessive digital effects actually hold up particularly well and can even put some newer movies to shame. While ultimately an entertaining ride, it is so unnecessarily long.
The Blu-ray presentation, though, is great all the way around. The quality of the movie, presentation, and incredibly extensive bonus features (thankfully placed on a separate disc) is a steal at $6. I actually preferred this to the upscaled 4K version which makes it an even better value for me. Can't go wrong for such a low price.

This version of a King Kong remake was surprisingly good. I was skeptical going into this movie but came out actually enjoying it. With good special fx and sticking true to most of the original story, it certainly was a better version than the more modern 1978 movie. I didn't think that Jack Black was going to be a good fit, but he pulled off a good performance. This steelbook edition has a vintage cover that looks 1930ish but the down fall is there's no inside cover artwork. I like to open my steelbooks and be wowed by the inside as well as out.
