    Nike Heir Has Another Hit

Kubo is a stop-motion animated feature that pays homage to Japanese folklore and culture. It is directed by Travis Knight, the son of Nike co-founder Phil Knight. His father also owns the Laika production company which also produced Coraline and Paranorman (among other titles). I mention this because I can't help but think about the father/son dynamic when watching a film like this. Visually speaking, this film is amazing. The fact that most of these sets and puppets were physically created with such detail is incredible to me. The amount of work that was put into this film is astounding. At it's heart, it's a movie about a boy who experiences loss on a consistent basis but still finds different ways to carry on. It's about family, veneration and identity. Art Parkinson (Rickon from Game of Thrones) vocally provides Kubo's innocence. Charlize Theron and Matthew McConaughey are Kubo's companions/parents and they are both reassuring and summon the warmth that Kubo needs for his journey. I definitely recommend this film to any animation fan.

Most underrated movie of the year

Kubo is the most underrated film of the year, and not just as an animated feature. It contains all of the elements that make for a great film: a compelling story, unique characters and great dialogue. The banter between Beetle and Monkey is priceless. Kubo himself is a complex character, burdened by the tragedy that befell his family. At its core, the movie is a quest, a journey on many levels. The story is moved along by the best stop motion and CGI animation that has graced the screen in recent memory. Too bad Laika may not recuperate its investment due to paltry box office performance. It is very disappointing that the movie going masses snubbed this stellar movie. So please do your share to make this a cult classic by buying any version of it. The 3D is amazing. And it's got a killler theme song by Regina Spektor crooning a Beatles classic. It has broad appeal to all ages. Please take a chance if you're reading this review!

In the latest film by Laika (Coraline, The Boxtrolls), the story of a young boy on a journey to save himself and his village is told in a very unique animation style. Origami plays a big role and the visuals capture the locations and characters beautifully. The story has some great moments, but a few dull ones as well. There is death and violence, but it is handled deftly. My kids (3, 4, & 9) were not scared or upset and understood what was happening most of the time. The ending was sweet, but not as powerful as I might have liked. Honestly, the story would work better as a series or miniseries as it can feel rushed at points; however, it is a great story at its core. Overall, I'd still recommend it. It's good for parents who don't need a repeat of the "Let It Go" sensation as there is a great soundtrack, but few vocals. Kids will enjoy it and the parents can too.

    Laika does it again

Kubo is yet another adventure by studio Laika, this time telling the story of a young boy with the power to manipulate paper racing against time to collect a mysterious set of armor in order to confront his Immortal grandfather, the Moon King. The overall story is engaging, but lacks some of the punch left by previous Laika outings such as Coraline and ParaNorman. However, the story's final message more than makes up for its somewhat disjointed narrative, and the small cast help make said message speak great volumes. Visually, the film is a spectacle to be seen. Once again Laika outdoes themselves with a masterful use of stop-motion and blend it with CG that is almost impossible to distinguish from the handcrafted characters and environments. The overall package makes for a great family viewing that'll surely please the young and the old.

It's no surprise that this movie was nominated for an Oscar. With a compelling story and breathtaking artwork, this original story about a brave Japanese boy and his companions serves as a larger metaphor for family, commitment, and endurance. The plot revolves around Kubo, a young boy who supports his mother by telling swashbuckling tales about a Japanese knight named Hanso. Unbeknownst to Kubo, who utilizes a magical guitar and origami to spin his stories, the story is actually the history of his own father, who disappeared after trying to protect Kubo and his mother from his evil grandfather. The rest of the story involves Kubo's journey into his own legend, with a monkey companion and a mysterious beetle warrior. I laughed and cried with my family and still feel deeply unsatisfied that this movie lost at the Academy Awards.

Saw this movie in the theaters with the family and we all loved it. The stop motion animation was great and the visual presentation displayed in muted tones in some scenes and then vibrant, multicolored hues in another show well on the Blu-ray. Detail is crisp and the sound helps to bring so much of the story to life. Often the sound is subtle, defined, and precise but when it needs to be more dynamic and alive, it is. Very nice sound envelope and will play back well on a good quality HT system. The movie itself is full of deeper meanings and touches on many human faults and strengths. Younger audiences will appreciate the humor and the courage of the young character while teens and adults will get more of the symbolism and meaning to the story. Very family friendly and a great tale.

Charlize Theron and Matthew McConaughey. Kubo amazes the people in his village with his magical gift for telling stories with origami. When he accidentally summons an evil spirit seeking vengeance, Kubo is forced to go on a quest to solve the mystery of his fallen samurai father and his mystical weaponry. Along the way he sis joined by a talking monkey and a bug in armor. I loved the art of this movie, I loved the voice talents in this movie and the story is heart warming and lovely. I will also say that it is somewhat predictable. But that is okay as the story is so wonderful and the characters are so well defined too. I recommend this for the whole family and would love to watch it again, myself. Read less

This was a fun movie that both parents and children will enjoy together. Good story and characters make this a hidden little gem to own. The video on this Blu-Ray was very good with a picture that is very clear and easy on the eyes. It is a very colorful movie will a sharp contrast. Audio was very good as well. If you have a home theater, you will appreciate the audio on this Blu-Ray. Well defined voices, powerful music and great use of surround sound as well. The 3D effect was fun to watch with lots of depth and a few pop out effects. Overall this was a impressive little gem of a movie that will be watched numerous times.

This is a really great story with great animation. Most of it is practical animation instead of digital animation which is really awesome. The design of the characters made mating them and a couple digital things here and there seamless, which.... on the one hand made it a very unified film, but on the other hand, I think that if you are going to go to all the effort they went to make the film hand made, that it should have looked a little more hand made. I mean, it all looked awesome, but I wish it had a little more human flaw to the imagery. Personal choice. But as I said, the story was awesome, so... great film.

I love anime and Japanese popular culture, so I was eager to check this out, but at the same time, I doubted I would like it because it is only available with English dialogue and I typically only watch anime in Japanese. Happily, the voice cast in Kubo does an outstanding job of bringing the characters to life. The animation is gorgeous, bright and colorful, plus the Blu-ray presentation looks great. One of the best aspects of this movie was the soundtrack, which was just beautiful. If you like animation or enjoy movies that are about Japanese mythology, then you should really enjoy Kubo!

Considering I grew up with Mickey and Donald, and Pluto, this may sound harsh, but the movie itself isn't bad, but it tends to lack the depth of most Disney movies and focuses more on the graphics and the exploits of the technology age, where as the empathy for the character and their battle internally is somewhat lacking. I mean granted it is about destroying the evil sisters. But there really isn't the draw for the emotional depth the older Disney movies had. You get the impression they are trying too hard to make the character seem more important than the story really is

I loved this movie. The art style is fairly unique and a real feast for the eyes. The story is great and takes a few unexpected turns before coming to beautiful and moving ending. It's about a boy named Kubo who has a magic gift for making paper and origami figures come to life by playing his shamisen. Kubo lives in a cave with his mother, a beautiful but very sad lady. After breaking the rule about curfew, his mother disappears and he goes in search of his father's armor. The story is a lot more complex and interesting than my synopsis, so I encourage you to watch this movie.

We saw this movie in the theater when it was released. We saw the 2D version of the movie and the whole family, two adults and two elementary-school children, enjoyed it. We purchased the DVD because it's a movie worthy of more than one viewing. I won't do a review of the movie as many others have already done reviews, most praising it. I will say that if you have the ability to play a 3D DVD, the 3D DVD is the one to buy. It enhances the visual effects in the movie. Don't worry if you don't have access to 3D. It's a great movie no matter whether seen in 2D or 3D..

Easily my favorite Laika movie, the look of this movie and the setting and Asian influences are all very cool. I would say that, like Laila's other works, the script is a little bit weak, but the marvel of the movie makes up for that. Surprisingly dark in subject matter, I definitely recommend this movie for older children. The sound and video quality are decent, but the 3D presentation feels a bit lacking compared to previous Laika releases. The depth is noticeably diminished compared to the theatrical presentation, but still makes for an enjoyable experience.

After reading reviews, I found that a lot of people who liked Song of the Sea (one of my daughter's and our favorites), really enjoyed this movie. While, I would say that it's worth your money, it's not as good as Song of the Sea. The artwork was on point and was incredibly captivating. However, the dialogue in the movie tried to hard to drive the emotions in. It was often choppy and blocky, and instead of the viewer getting a sense of the emotions of the scene, too often a character would try and spell it out. So, all in all, good but not great.

Kubo is a great movie. The animation style is a joy to watch. The story and setting are great. It's an all ages movie with a classic defeat the bad guy concept. But with it based on Japanese mythology and lore. The goals and methods to defeat an enemy broaden as the story progresses. I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys animation just for the craft and artistry involved and like adventure mixed with a quest. The moral of the story being that you may not always need a sword to defeat your enemies and why other ways are always good to consider.

Easily on of my favorite movies of 2016! Laika Studios continues to impress with their latest stop-motion film. Not only is the story great with plenty of suspense and entertaining character moments, but the visuals are absolutely stunning! When you stop for a second and realize that what you are seeing are thousands of micro-movements that were patiently and meticulously moved by hand, you will really get a sense of the passion and ingenuity that went into this amazing film. I highly recommend this to movie fans and fans of animation.

Laika has outdone themselves again with another amazing, unique, and heartfelt adventure. They're creative style is wondrous to watch again. Fans of Coraline, Paranorman, or Boxtrolls will be treated to another work of art from Laika. I've seen Zootopia and Moana, both were amazing. Finding Dory was cute. But in my opinion, this is the best animated movie of the year. Great for all ages. Whether you're new to Laika or have watched their movies since Coraline, do yourself a favor and see Kubo.

I would recommend this movie to those that are inclined to liking fantasy tales. Many surprises as the story unfolds. It is not a particularly light hearted story for kids however. The video is 1st class with detailed imaging along with a satisfying sound presentation. The added depth of the 3D version does enhance the viewing experience.

When you think about the level of detail they put into this movie, you can't help but to be amazed. All the hours they put into making each character move, fight, and interact with each other, is just mind-boggling. The story was so good that you'll forget that its stop motion. You can't help but become emotionally attached to Kubo early on in the movie, because he has to take care of his mother and provide for her all alone. The story is both amazing, and heartwarming.
