Don't currently need a HD player, however HD players are what is currently available in the market. I was already prepared to hook up my legacy HDCP DVI connected display via a HDMI switch that will split out the Audio on Toslink to my legacy receiver. So this new player slotted into my legacy setup and is ready to go if/when I upgrade the display
