Good value WiFi6, but inconsistent performance

I have been using Linksys for Routers for over a decade now, and I had this problem of inconsistent Wifi now and then. My Last router EA8500 dropped 2.4 Ghz often while 5GHz worked OK. I still decided to give Velop Wifi 6 a try based on the specs and the sticker price. The intelligent mesh is a great feature too, that you can combine compatible mesh nodes from the previous gen. First, these are easy to set up and easily adopted settings from linksyssmartwifi account. Routers and the nodes were all set up in under 20 mins. The performance was top at first, clocking a download speed of 700+ on an xfinity connection of 600Mbps ( Which is normal in my area, they are typically faster than plan speed ). A 7th gen Ipad clocked a 387 download speed while a windows laptop clocked 190 from a node. All devices including smart home devices connected quickly without any issues. I had consistent signal strength throughout a 3100 SQft home even with two nodes.
Issues:
1. Started observing problems on day 2. A node upstairs suddenly went red, I had to restart the node to bring it back online.
2. Devices are not always connecting to the nearest node, even though it is not getting the strongest signal. Whatever algorithmic optimization is used, it needs to be tuned better.
3. Biggest issue is the huge speed drop at a distance from the node. I get 380 Mbps to download speed close to the router, while I move away to the yard about 25 Ft behind a brick wall, my speed drops to 19 Mbps. Same when I move around the house. Move closer, speed picks up to 300 +.
In comparison, with Orbi AX4200, I get 230 Mbps at the exact same spot with the nod positioned at the exact same location.
4. Very limited parental controls. It is a huge deal at this price point. You have the basic option of blocking the internet to a device or add a filter for individual domains.
5. No antivirus and malware protection included.
With competing products dropping in price, this model cannot be recommended at this stage. My experience with Linksys is inconsistent performance and this new model is no exception.

The triband aspect is in my opinion wasted. You get a 2.4ghz band and two 5ghz bands. Most IOT and smart devices are 2.4ghz, so not sure what the purpose of the extra 5ghz band is. They should have made it a wireless backhaul channel.
Anyway, featurewise it's pretty lackluster. Plug and Go. Easy to set up. It likes dropping 2.4ghz devices for some reason. You cannot assign devices to a specific node or band.
The light in the top is bright enough to be a nightlight and cannot be controlled (use White 3m Electrical tape, it's slightly transparent and allows you to see the status without having the thing light up your room).
The app is borderline useless. Very very basic functionality, majority still needs to be done from the web interface.
Speed and Signal are pretty decent without a wired (or the absent wireless backhaul), some speed is lost despite the absolute ideal placement and signal strength.
Would I get them a again if I did it over? Probably. I had Nest WiFi and Orbi before this. Orbi was a nightmare (anything netgear, forget their fancy names they use) and Google WiFi was starting to struggle with the number of devices.

I have owned the Velop AX4200 for a few months now and they have worked great. They replaced an Orbi AC two mesh system and I immediately saw improvement in performance and coverage. Very strong signal, including my backyard and garage where the Orbi would cutoff.
I tried the new AX6000 Orib 2 pack but returned it since I did not see much a performance boost or coverage increase vs. the AC version and tried a few standalone routers but their coverage was terrible.
The Linksys Velop performance has far exceeded any other wifi mesh system I have tried and highly recommend for both speeds and coverage.
Note - I live in a 1,900 sq ft ranch home with 1gb internet speeds.

Upgraded from the original Google mesh wifi after seeing it slow down to half or even less by the time it got to the third connection point. However with the linksys velop I see no speed decrease and get great coverage throughout the whole house. I enjoy all the features it has like wifi 6, MU-MIMO, OFDMA, tri band, device prioritization, and target wake up time. Very easy to setup and the app is easy to use, it even shows you what band each device is connected to as well as allow you to name them and pick an icon for them. If you have a good amount of wifi 6 devices in your home this is definitely worth it.

The product was easy to setup, the setup program was easy to use and worked well. Placement of the nodes was simple, and once placed the nodes checked the area around them to find the best channels to use to communicate with each other. I was able to verify that the channels were moved into a neighbor free channel block after this action.
While i might not have needed this particular model for my setup, the slight older model only had 2 ethernet ports per node, I for the lan and 1 for the wan per node which would have necessitated me purchasing 2 switches to accommodate the hardwired devices that i have.
By upgrading to this model i was able (for the same price as the older model and the 2 switches) get faster devices with more internal memory, 4200 vs 2200 speed, ip v6 vs ip v5 and wpa2 and wpa3 personal encryption too.
I was happy to find out that while the mfg's stated preference is to manage the devices from a ios or andriod device and/or from a cloud acct, the local management interface is still available on a laptop or desktop thru any browser.
A bonus is the speed test option from the mgmt interface actually works on this product, I've had LInksys products for probably 20 years and its never worked, ok not a big deal as you can use a browser and get decent results that way.
The device was able to acquire about 95% of the hostnames of the wifi and Ethernet devices upon their first connection, so it was easy to setup the dhcp reservations. I was pleasantly surprised as to how well the IOS app works for daily management purposes and checks, while i still prefer a keyboard, the IOS interface is pretty good too.
As an aside , and it not an issue with the Velop, smart devices could take the majority of your time getting things up and running again after the upgrade, i found outdated instructions, in some cases i had to factory reset the devices, a couple no matter what i did the device would not connect to their apps, and so on .
Also the device comes up running wpa2, if you have older devices you may not want to go to wpa3, or hardware those devices, While its not my personal experience, a friend turned on wpa3 and spent a long while trying to figure out why his NAS device would not re-connect after the encryption switch.

The system has performed great. It was incredibly easy to set up and all told only took about 45 minutes to set up 3 nodes. Our house is two stories and about 4000 square feet. This system handles it with ease. I upgraded to gig service and I am consistently getting speeds in the 900's all around the house. We have 20-30 devices connected at any given time without any problem.
I would recommended this system to anyone looking for great coverage in a large house.

Good coverage all around my tri-level. Probably only needed 2 nodes, but the setup was easy and have not had any drop outs. Thinking about wiring the backhaul, but wifi performance has been good so far. No complaints from teenage console gaming child either. Units are a bit bulky, but knew that going into the purchase. 4.5 rounded up.

Very easy to setup and the range is incredible. I put one in the basement, one in my first floor office and one in my second floor family room. Good coverage for my whole house. A little pricey but in this case, you do get what you pay for.

Linksys Velo AX4200 WiFi 6 system Rocks!!!

Linsys Velop AX4200 WiFi 6 System is a phenomenal mesh system that has far superior coverage than my previous AmplifiHD system. In addition, Linksys has prompt, and significantly more helpful, accessible customer support whereas the amplifiHD customer support consisted only of email communications that are often inaccurate, incomplete and don't actually help solve the problem. The WiFi signal with this system covers two floors and a basement office in a 4400 square foot home, and even extends out to our barn and arena 60-70 ft behind the rear of the house. The signal strength is quite good and the speed is quite fast with the accompanying Arris Surboard product I also purchased from Best Buy.

The fact that you can buy 1 or 100 is great. I have (generally speaking) a very large area to cover with 30+ devices connected constantly. Streaming shows/music, lots of IOT devices, google home devices everywhere, security cameras, etc. Which the system handles flawlessly despite me not using hardwired backplanes, which was my original plan.
Using 4 devices I covered my whole house (4 floors) with full coverage that reaches 100+ ft back past the pool with plenty of speed.
They are a bit pricey (and big) but considering they have worked out better than expected I feel it was worth it.

Linksys Velop AX4200 Wifi 6 System - 3 pack

This 3pk AX4200 system from Linksys is worthy of it's overall rating. With its easy to set up app (just download and follow the directions) I had all three points up and running within 45 min. Upon running some diagnostics, the system speed was immediately noted with amazing download / upload speeds. The only drawback is that the 3pk was only offered in white....plus, each pack is large and bulky. Other than that, if you are running a fast network from your ISP, this system from Links is definitely worth its price.

ize: 2-pack
Changed my wireless to this which allows for over 40+ connections (yes Hue lights, gaming consoles, iWatch and so many other devices we dont consider (i have 3 smart tv's at home) all need a good connection, and with this, connection is blazing fast, its expandible if you need to cover more area, and its future proof, so invest and the set up is lightning fast through the Linksys app. Easy to use, and I am not a techie so this was a great solution for my upgrade at home.

Needed a mesh system to replace an Archer C8 that couldn't quite reach all of our new to us u-shaped home. I was able to spread the Velop units (main near bottom of U and one towards top of each side and obtain great coverage all around. Seems to work just fine and as expected by their marketing. I have 200/10 service through Spectrum and am exceeding those speeds by 10% or so. That includes the router Velop and the outer Velop units, and that includes times when family is streaming online, gaming, etc.
I'd would appreciate firmware updates to allow for more user control over channel selection/dns server and other customizations that I have used with other home routers.

Overall quality of the product is not bad. As far as setup it is simple! Very easy to use and when something happened that was user error the support team of lynksis. I wasn’t sure about spending the money but the quality of the signal around my house is amazing. I didn’t know the difference between mesh and a single router system but the difference is quite noticeable. I do recommend to anyone with a large home or that is struggling to get signal around their home. The white casing of the router is prone to looking scratched. So that’s why I gave it a 4 out of 5 if that wasn’t the case it would be 5 out of 5

I have had the system up for a little over a month. So far it seems to be running well. Overall coverage is decent. There is an area of my house that has full coverage but no internet. It’s really weird, but I don’t think that is because of the WiFi. I have it setup one day in the living room, one in the office, and the third one is in a shed/work space in the back yard. This seems to cover most of my property with decent coverage. Setup was fairly simple but I did have to call and get help, but they were extremely helpful and had me back on track very quickly.

these units are much larger than the units they were replacing, and once they were setup have been reliable, strong/consistent. nb you lose half your wired speed to the backhaul, so my 1GB connection, will only get max 500M on wifi.
Upgrading/replacing too significantly longer than planned (by several hours) and required the assistance of Linksys support (which was fantastic)
One minor irksome point, the reset button on these units is a tiny button which actually requires a pin to complete depress...so the first few times I thought I was resetting, I actually wasn't. grrr.

When Netgear kept dropping connections I returned them and got the Linksys. Their WiFi 6 is great. Finally getting the speed I'm paying for. Set up was smooth and very straight forward. The app is so easy. Getting Gig speed throughout the house with the mesh on every floor. Parental control works like a charm so now I can finally put them kids to bed!!! Thanks Linksys!

This has made every single corner of our house have incredible wifi. The setup was quick and easy, and the app makes administration of the wifi easy and painless. Would recommend this to anyone looking for fast and easy wifi. Its a 4200 system so fast enough for our WFH lifestyle and streaming services.
