After having a few close calls at night and being involved in an accident that wasn't our fault, we decided to get a dash cam, as it eliminates the "he said, she said" debate when a police officer is determining fault for an accident. It's much better to have your own camera rather than relying on the kindness of people to stop and wait for police when there's an accident. The Magellan Mivue 638 is a fantastic dash cam. The camera itself is relatively small (around 3" height), which is perfect for putting the camera behind the rear-view mirror and the suction mount holds the camera securely no matter the conditions. The plastic casing around the camera is very durable and will survive drops or the heat of a parked car in summer. Image quality is fantastic, the camera records in 1080P, and nighttime footage is very clear even on poorly lit roads. The camera records on a continuous loop and isn't overly sensitive to big bumps or other road imperfections like some other dash cams. Collision footage is automatically locked and saved. The menus are easy to navigate and there are several options. Sound recording is on by default by easily be turned off if you don't want it. The standard 4GB microSD card is pretty good and can hold about 20 minutes of footage. The camera has two slots for microSD cards and I believe it accepts up to a 32GB microSD card.
A major negative of this camera was the weird setup. Initially, I had to first insert the proprietary notched USB cord into the suction cup mount and then insert the suction cup mount onto the camera. I had to push pretty hard on the microUSB head to get it to go all the way into the suction cup mount before attching the mount to the camera. The instruction manual was useless in helping me figure this out and it took me over an hour to get it working. Overall the Mivue 638 very good dashcam, but the initial setup is a little difficult.

I really like this dash cam. I will elaborate on the reasons why, but I will first caution new users about the strange and mandatory method of plugging the power cord in. The power cord is a propriety USB cable. That sounds standard but it is not that simple. The first step is sliding the slotted USB plug into the suction cup base. The next step is to then snap the suction cup base into the camera. Everything MUST be done in that order or you wont be able to connect the cord to the camera. While this provides for a very secure connection, this procedure is NOT referenced anywhere in the manual. Thankfully the other end is standard 12V car plug in! This camera comes with a 8 GB micro SD card and can accept up to a 128 GB card. A nice feature is that there are 2 card slots which allows for copying files from the primary card to the secondary card. The touch screen is super easy to use and makes controlling the camera very intuitive. If you can use a smart phone, you can figure this camera out. The 150 degree field of view provides a very full sight picture. There is some fish lens, but that is unavoidable with a wide angle lens, and is a worthwhile trade off to get nearly the entire front end of the car covered. I also like the parking feature which works off of the internal battery, which according to the manual can operate for up to one hour of recording. Other cameras offer this, but the unit must be wired to the battery. The video quality is very clear and can be set to 720P or 1080P HDR. I am very satisfied with this camera and the peace of mind it provides!

I would of given this 5 stars but I don't like the fact that I have to "hide" my power cord and run it into the head lip of my car. Works well and I do enjoy the "safety" factor.

the power connector on the unit is deformed and you can not connect the power cord to the unit. it would not even make a good paper weight.
