Customers are saying

Customers are impressed with the solid gameplay and fun factor of Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash, finding it easy to pick up and play for all ages. However, some feel the game lacks sufficient content, a diverse character roster, and a variety of features compared to previous installments in the series. The game provides enjoyable gameplay, but improvements in content and features would enhance the overall experience.

Nintendo did well in the overall build of the game. I played the Nintendo 3DS title thoroughly, and one major difference between that title and this one is that there is no single-player tournament play. You are instead limited to playing regular matches (singles or doubles are still here), and you can do so either by yourself or with up to three others locally. You can also play online against other players around the world. Some features here that are not in the 3DS title are two new modes--Mega Battle, Mega Ball Rally, and Knockout Challenge. In Mega Battle, mega mushrooms are commonly thrown out behind the service line, which will make one player bigger, allowing them to cover more area. In Mega Ball, you and your opponent play a rally with a mega ball, which is larger than a normal tennis ball and moves a lot slower. In Knockout Challenge, you aim for consecutive wins, and your opponent gets tougher the further you go. You can also play this mode with an amiibo and train it. Lastly, there are 25 rewards which you can unlock either by playing the game or spending coins accumulated in any mode of play. There seems to be no other use for coins other than unlocking a reward early and without meeting their conditions. Despite a couple of shortcomings, I still find this game a lot of fun and enjoy playing with friends.

Great Game for Old Fans and New

A step...sideways from the original mario tennis games, but a good one nonetheless. Mixes some new elements from the mario tennis open (Nintendo DS game) and keeps the old familiar play. Not that many characters in this one or mini games (as opposed to power tennis) but it still remains fresh and fun with friends or family.

I don't regret this purchase though i do wish it came with more content. The gameplay and visuals are great but it feels shallow overall. Still fun if you plan to play with friends or online.

Graphics are great. Game play is smooth, fun, easy to learn. Somewhat lacking in content to previous games in this series. Online play is great, lots of people playing!

Overall lacking in features and depth - however what it brings to the table is family fun...just don't expect to sink serious hours into it.

I never played the previous Mario Tennis titles so I have nothing to compare it to. Based on other reviews though I've read that there isn't as much content as in previous games. However, this is still a fun game for what it is, especially with multiplayer. And the single player challenge can get intense and of course the visuals are great. It may not be worth it to buy at full price but if you can get it out a discount it would be an excellent addition to the Wii U library.

Adequate Remake of a Great Game

Many years ago, before you could write reviews for Best Buy, or play a plethora of games on your phone while in the restroom there was a device called a Gameboy. Many of my generation turned to this Gameboy for support while answering the call from nature. Now on said Gameboy there was a game called Mario Tennis. It was fantastic, my legs fell asleep many times while I lost track of time, and forgot where I was or what I was doing while playing it. Which brings me to this game. If you enjoyed the Gameboy version, you will like this one. The gameplay is almost identical. At the start of every match you have the option to select copy, which allows you to play on the wii u tablet while never turning your tv on. It's a very good remake with a couple of twists. If it were any franchise other than Mario I would dock it a star for being so pricey with so little addition content.

Use of Amibos is genius. Super power mode is out of this world. Only reason I didn't score it a 5 is the single player mode was too easy. My 11 and 9 yr old got all achievements in under 2 days. Online is fun, specially playing doubles. Have fun with this Mario Classic in next generation Nintendo graphics.

Been a fan of Mario Tennis since the early days, and still play GameCube version to this day. The new Wii U version is gorgeous and gameplay is great, though the game lacks depth. Still, if you're a fan of Mario sports games, this is a good choice for the Wii U.

If you have played any Mario Sports game before than you know how these are. These are great for families to play, especially if you have kids that love sports. My wife, who doesn't like games and sports, enjoys this game a lot.

I enjoyed this one because they stripped the game play down to its basics and did not go overly eccentric with all the game play making the game play smoother and more enjoyable. Fun to play with family and friends.

I have always enjoyed the Mario themed games on the Wii u. I grew up on these type of games and want my son to have memories of them too. Game play is pretty easy to pick up. Overall, pretty good game.

This is a fun game but kinda limited as far as play. Just the nature of a tennis/sports game though. There's some fun modes and pretty cool badges to collect.

It plays just like the old classic Mario Tennis games but revamped with more intensity, and good smooth gameplay and graphics. Only downfall is the lack of characters and courses compared to the old games. But The online feature makes this a A++! So it's a nice content trade off. Definitely still worth it and for the price!

Not a bad game overall, but it is missing a lot of features compared to Mario Power Tennis on the Gamecube and even the recent Mario Tennis Open for 3DS. However, it does look very nice and supports basic online play, which is a plus. If you decide to buy this game, just know that you're getting the bare bones experience. There's not really anything to do outside of the core tennis gameplay.
