It was time for me to transition from my old office laptop (five years old) to a new device that would be as portable as possible, lightweight, with a 12-inch screen. All that makes for an ideal commuter companion. My goal was to be portable for quick readings and reviews on the subway, but also to have a device that, once in the office, could handle all my work functions: Teams, Excel, Word, and email. After a week of working with it, the Microsoft Surface Pro Copilot stands out as a versatile 2-in-1 device, combining the portability and multifunctionality of a tablet with the power of a full laptop, thanks to its Snapdragon X Plus 8-core processor, 16GB of RAM, and 256GB SSD. Opening the box, it’s clear that Microsoft’s developers have put significant effort into aesthetics. The silver chassis is light and easy to carry in a backpack or briefcase. Its lightness doesn’t compromise quality, and the materials still provide a sturdy device that can handle daily commutes without scratches or damage. The integrated kickstand offers various opening angles, making it easy to adapt your workstation to the available space while still facing the screen and the front camera (as with most tablets, a back camera is also available). I also added the magnetic Surface Keyboard (separately sold), which left a strong positive impression. It attaches securely, transforming the tablet into a full-fledged laptop in seconds. The touch mouse pad is good but some lagging sometimes. Regarding the screen, the 12-inch PixelSense touchscreen is bright, clear, sharp, and responsive. I enjoy reading my work reports and PDF books on the train, and the device delivers excellent performance. It’s so comfortable that I ended up adding a stylus pen to my kit, allowing me to take notes and add comments while reading. Quite good sound delivered on its speakers and very good mic quality for the working meetings (according to the interlocutors). In terms of technological performance, the Snapdragon processor makes the Surface Pro a perfect multitasking and office work device. The new addition of Copilot as an integrated capability seems to be a major factor that I have only scratched the surface with. This device is absolutely perfect for my needs with productivity tasks, documents, and light edits. However, I see some limitations in performance for power gaming (not a requirement in my use case) or major video editing (I will miss being able to edit my Insta360 camera videos because the software is not compatible). The previously mentioned performance aspects of the Snapdragon processor provide the advantage of extended usage and battery life. In this area, the Surface Pro provides almost all-day battery life (around 10 hours of my normal use) with a single charge. Again, this was important for my business case in selecting this device. In terms of connectivity, I feel this is an area where the device falls short because it only includes two USB-C ports. I understand that I can use Wi-Fi or Bluetooth options, but considering the size of the screen, I miss at least having an HDMI connection for work in the office. I suspect that engineers are simply assuming that a hub is necessary to expand this functionality. I have similar mixed feelings about the storage. With 16GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD, you can be sure that the laptop will handle the storage needs of the average user. Now, I also think that cloud archiving will soon become a necessity. Despite the couple of aspects mentioned above not being relevant to my user needs, I need to make one major final consideration. There is a big disappointment that this product costs a full star in this review: there is no charger included! First, this is a major concern because I didn’t know; it took a deep review of the box to notice it when I found a paper note saying that it is sold without a charger (it just includes a USB-C to USB-C cable). How is it possible that they are selling a laptop and not including a charger? To be clear, not just any charger will work; it only worked properly with my old laptop’s 65W charger. With all that, the product is great for users on the move looking for flexibility and long battery life. The product adds new AI capabilities that I am sure I will adopt as a user; however, I want a charger to be considered a basic need and included.

With the migration to Snapdragon processors i am just not impressed with the performance, sitting next to an AMD Ryzen 7 and an Intel i5 (13th generation), it still lags behind in overall performance. Storage is performant, recalling items is snappy, but opening browsers, installing updates, or manuevering through Microsoft Office is still not as performant as the non-ARM based counterparts. It is not a BAD device, it was just underwhelming for the hype, and for the price. MSRP of $800+, I had expected more.
