I started with the other keyboard and constantly made typing errors. I'm good at typing but you couldn't feel the keys enough. This keyboard has a nice soft touch and just enough movement to give you the needed feedback. With this keyboard I can take meeting notes, type long emails and do almost anything I would want to do on my surface RT.
My only negative, which hasn't proven true yet, is that when you flip the keyboard under to use it as a stand, it would scratch if set on a hard rough surface like concrete.
I am a big fan of the Surface RT and am glad to see a strong product provide competition to the others. Batter life is excellent and it seamlessly integrates with my Windows 8 phone and Live account with Skydrive.

Makes it an Ultrabook

I bought my Surface Pro not to use as a tablet but rather as an Ultrabook PC. This keyboard does exactly that - turns the Surface Pro into a PC. Given the shallow depth, the key action is good, the trackpad is responsive, and the weight and size penalties are reasonable. I do wish Microsoft had more tunability in their trackpad app, however. I would like to be able to change the sensitivity or even disable it completely with a keypress so I don't accidentally move the cursor with a brush of my palm. All my previous laptops have had a one-key enable/disable trackpad feature; this one should as well.

Magnetically couples to the surface. Good feel to the keys. The first keyboard touchpad failed after about a week. The replacement has survived a fair amount of use over the last few weeks. Lightweight and does a good job of protecting the screen when closed.
The keyboard does not feel solid enough to be used in your lap, as I often do. It works well when fully supported on a desk or tray table on a plane. I do think $129 price is a bit high. I suppose that will resolve itself as 3rd party's begin to manufacture compatible products.
I do recommend the keyboard as the only convenient portable alternative. Its clumsy to a wired USB keyboard and I typically don't like the responsiveness of bluetooth keyboards, especially when typing intermittently.

This is an excellent keyboard that doubles as a cover and stand. Light and well engineered. As a more "mature" computer user I really like the tactile feel of they keys. Does not add much weight or size to the overall machine. I added a bluetooth mouse which also aids productivity over the touch pad. Easy connect/disconnect feature has been perfect so far over the two months that I have had the machine.

the following are my opinions on the type cover for the surface pro tablet. i purchased the type cover with my surface pro tablet. i have found the type cover to be very good. it is truly portable, i have had issues with previous travel keyboards as they are always more difficult to travel with than it seems. the type cover adds very little bulk to the actual tablet and fits in the same tablet slot with the surface. it seems sturdy enough for normal use, i haven't felt like i would break it or anything. typing on the type cover is far better than previous tablet keyboards i have used. the fact that it is not wireless means less missed keystrokes for me and the feedback from the keys is adequate. i use it mainly when i am out and about working on word docs, emails, notes, etc. i really like the felt-like backing on the cover. when i first got the surface tablet i was hesitant to lay it down on my desk and very careful about moving it around. just felt like i would scratch it or something. with the cover on i just lay it down on that side and have no fear. i have only 2 issues with it: 1) i leave the type cover attached when traveling with my surface pro. sometimes when i turn the tablet on to use it the track pad works but nothing i type is recognized. if i detach the type cover and re attach, it works fine. not sure if this is a device issue or if i have a defective one? tolerable issue though. 2) the track pad is a bit cumbersome to use. the area on the pad seems a bit small for me. also the responsiveness seems a bit low as well. this has been a problem with a lot of smaller travel keyboards i have used in the past. not a big problem since i am using a tablet, i just interact via the touchscreen anyway.
it does come with a premium price tag. i just thought of it as being part the cost of the surface pro. since i use it daily at work, school and home i am ok with the cost. only thing left is to see how well it holds up over time.

I got this keyboard for my Surface RT and I love it. I chose this "type" keyboard/cover over the touch one because it has more of a keyboard feel. When you type on it, the keys actually click like a real keyboard as opposed to the touch version. To me it's easier to type on. I also like how easily it clicks into place on the Surface and stays put. It also protects the screen when not in use.

I have had this for about two weeks now and the keyboard is the same as any other keyboard. Works very well with the surface pro. Buy this one instead of the touch cover. $10 dollars more is worth it.
By the way if you are not sure on buying the surface pro buy it you won't be sorry. The surface pro replaced my 2 year old i5 laptop. If you want portability this device is it. Don't compromise and buy a toy like the ipad. This device is for serious users.

I like having a keyboard for my tablet and it's a great cover too. Combined no heavier than my friend's Samsung with cover; probably lighter. Better than the other keyboard MS is offering as you could see the floor model was already falling apart in the store.
I think companies are making quite a bit of money off of covers and keyboards. Wish this had been <$100 then it would have been excellent.

This is a keyboard cover that feels like a real keyboard when you touch type, and it attaches easily to the surface. When you are done typing, you can either easily detach it or fold it up over the screen to use it as a cover to protect the screen while carrying the Surface. It is light and attractive and fully functional.

Got this for my Surface Pro to replace the Touch Cover I was using previously. It's soooo much better for typing because of the feel of the keys and the feedback you get as compared to the Touch. I'm probably about 90% of my speed and accuracy with a laptop keyboard and I think that's pretty good.
The trackpad is tiny and almost unusable... this is for a touch device, so I get that you shouldn't really need to use it much, but there are times when it's hard to click some small controls and using the trackpad as a mouse makes sense. However, the left and right buttons are so close together and barely distinguishable by touch that I'm constantly pressing one when I want the other or accidentally scrolling to the bottom of a document and selecting all the text when really all I was trying to do was scroll down a bit.
Seems a bit pricey too for a keyboard, but it's the only game in town for an attached keyboard cover for Surface.

If you buy the Surface, which I highly recommend, then you'll want a keyboard to go with it. Unfortunately their keyboards are sold separately. This is the higher quality keyboard. For the slimness, it has an excellent touch and responsiveness, with nice clicks with each tapping of the keyboard. I really like how easy it is to connect. Just bring it close and the magnets will pull it into place, no fuss, no muss. It starts working instantly. If you want to pull it off in the middle of typing, you can do that without damaging it. While connected it folds nicely and doesn't come loose. The detachable keyboard feature is really nice, because you can use your Surface to videochat while walking around without awkward parts hanging off of it, perhaps skyping important moments with those that cannot be there. I am going to try that.

great keyboard I highly recommend this keyboard over the touch. especially if your like me and have big fingers or are use to hearing the clicking as you type. the touch just felt weird and had to type much harder then usual. great concept just needs to be upgraded. just wasn't for me. the type however is perfect for anyone. feels like a regular keyboard very easy to use and has all of your controls in convenient places. only thing I didn't like was how the oil from your fingers shows. basically you have to clean it more then a regular keyboard and is easy to clean if your like me and don't like the oil showing on your keys

Love the Surface RT tablet and keyboard. Totally underrated tablet system. Our recommendations have led to the purchase of a total of 3 Surface Tablets with keyboards among family members (and a fourth purchase is soon to follow) as well as two additional purchases among friends and business associates. Everyone loves them. Three of these are used by college students who take these lightweight tablets and keyboards onto campus in their backpacks. Keyboard is easy to use and provides a protective cover for the tablet. Students can download powerpoint notes, make their own additional notes off to the side with a stylus/ finger or type additional materials as necessary. Keyboard snaps on and off easily.

The keyboard that I purchased is exactly like my laptop keyboard, so it was and is familiar to work with and maneuver around. It doesn't make the tablet any heavier and is easy to remove if necessary.

I love the Surface touch keyboard. One needs this if only to use as a protective cover for the Surface tablet. The price could be cut in half for a better value though.

Overall I really like the type cover. The keys are closer together than on my desktop keyboard, but since I have small hands that is not an issue. I love having physical keys instead of the type on the touch cover. It feels pretty good to use. I really like how thin it is too. I supposed the only negative is the track pad is not the most accurate ever, but it is totally usable. And most things you would need to click on you can touch on screen anyway it isn't that big of a deal.
Like I said, nice keyboard/ cover.

It's like having a my lap top without weight and size to boot; I can't tell the difference between using this keypad versus a full-size machine. I'm depending on it to protect the screen on my Surface Tablet and that could prove to be a false sense of security because it is very thin and may puncture or tear easily. If it doesn't get wet or nothing gets stuck on the outer-side cover, this is will continue to be a great marriage. You just set it near the Tablet and they kiss and meet up with a magnetic hug!

I use this with my surface pro for work when I travel so I do not need to carry a full on laptop. I love it, the mouse pad makes it super easy to move around and typing on it is great. Its a little small on the width side, but its the same size as the surface so it is what is expected! Use it a ton and have no complaints. So much better then just a tablet, its a full on laptop at only 2 lbs.
