Required for productivity on MS Surface Pro

I purchased the type cover when I bought my 128 GB Microsoft Surface Pro. I am an aspiring writer and wanted something a little more responsive than the type cover, which after demoing in the store, showed me that it functioned only about 85% of the time. If you are an avid typist, you understand the need for feedback while typing. The type cover is the peripheral for the Microsoft Surface products that gives that to you. Each key press feels good and the keyboard is only slightly smaller than an ultrabook (I say about 90%, but it's larger than my old netbook keyboard, so I might be wrong). I have only experienced one issue with the type cover. If it is not on a flat surface like a desk or table, sometimes the Surface won't register my key presses. I sometimes lie on my couch and write and the keys will suddenly stop responding until I take my fingers off the keys and let it catch up. This went away when I bought a lapdesk and did all my work on there from now on. This was not so much of an issue with me since I look at the screen while typing, but someone who "hunts and pecks" at the keys would find this infuriating, I'm sure. They wouldn't realize that their keystrokes weren't being registered until they looked at the screen next. Still, it works approximately 85% of the time on your lap and will resume function again as soon as you take your fingers off the keys. This is not a deal-breaker for most people, just something to be aware of. I find the type cover to be absolutely necessary to own with the MS Surface Pro in order to complete any type of productive work. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone who bought a Surface Pro.

the following are my opinions on the type cover for the surface pro tablet. i purchased the type cover with my surface pro tablet. i have found the type cover to be very good. it is truly portable, i have had issues with previous travel keyboards as they are always more difficult to travel with than it seems. the type cover adds very little bulk to the actual tablet and fits in the same tablet slot with the surface. it seems sturdy enough for normal use, i haven't felt like i would break it or anything. typing on the type cover is far better than previous tablet keyboards i have used. the fact that it is not wireless means less missed keystrokes for me and the feedback from the keys is adequate. i use it mainly when i am out and about working on word docs, emails, notes, etc. i really like the felt-like backing on the cover. when i first got the surface tablet i was hesitant to lay it down on my desk and very careful about moving it around. just felt like i would scratch it or something. with the cover on i just lay it down on that side and have no fear. i have only 2 issues with it: 1) i leave the type cover attached when traveling with my surface pro. sometimes when i turn the tablet on to use it the track pad works but nothing i type is recognized. if i detach the type cover and re attach, it works fine. not sure if this is a device issue or if i have a defective one? tolerable issue though. 2) the track pad is a bit cumbersome to use. the area on the pad seems a bit small for me. also the responsiveness seems a bit low as well. this has been a problem with a lot of smaller travel keyboards i have used in the past. not a big problem since i am using a tablet, i just interact via the touchscreen anyway. it does come with a premium price tag. i just thought of it as being part the cost of the surface pro. since i use it daily at work, school and home i am ok with the cost. only thing left is to see how well it holds up over time.

    Needed for significant typing

I bought the Surface to function mostly as a mini-laptop with tablet advantages and have not been disappointed. The Surface does in fact function as a real laptop that allows extensive typing with this keyboard. I type a lot and very fast and knew the touch keyboard wouldn't work for my needs. This keyboard does a great job most of the time. It works best on a hard and completely flat surface. When using it on a tiled table with grooves or an old table with a dipped surface, I had trouble with the keys not responding quickly enough, especially the space bar, but when I put it on a large book, it worked fine. Sometimes there is a small bit of a lag, but I suspect that's when the doc is autosaving or something, because other times it can keep up with me fine. The keyboard includes volume and mute keys and keys that are useful for Surface functions. The touch pad is great and in fact I like it better than the touch pad on my big laptop. It's responsive, but not so much so that I am constantly moving the cursor accidentally when typing. Bottom line, while the keyboard is not as good as a standard desktop or laptop keyboard, it's far better than I expected for this sort of thing and I'm very pleased with it. Update: I upgraded this from 4 stars to 5 when I discovered that my original keyboard had issues. It was pretty good, but not perfect. I thought that was just how this sort of keyboard worked until I happened to try another on a display unit and learned that it functioned as good as any laptop keyboard. Consequently, I exchanged my original one for a new one and it works perfectly. I am delighted because now my wonderful little tablet is truly a little laptop.

I got a Surface RT tablet at a conference over the summer as a giveaway from Microsoft for teachers. I already have a laptop for work, I use an iPhone 4 for work, and I have an Android tablet (Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1) that I use for both personal stuff and work. So... the Surface wasn't something I really needed... but I was hoping it would help be become more portable with work--I travel all over my school district on a daily basis, and I wanted to see the Surface RT tablet reduce how much I carry--could it replace my laptop when I'm on the road? With the included touch keyboard--Nope. Big fat nope. I am a FAST touch typist and I was constantly frustrated by the touch keyboard. I started just leaving the Surface at home and continued lugging my laptop. I finally sprung for a type keyboard for the surface, and it's made my new tablet actually usable. I do bring a USB mouse with me because I find the trackpad on the type keyboard is not super... but that's a small price to pay for being able to leave my 6 pound laptop at home. I can do (almost) everything on my Surface as I could on my laptop, and teamed with my T-Mobile hotspot, I can access and work on everything I have saved in the cloud. Typing on the Type Keyboard is SO MUCH BETTER. It's like using a totally different machine. Much faster, much more comfortable, and only add a millimeter or so of thickness to the Surface RT package. Throwing down for the better keyboard has made the Surface RT worth having for me.

The on screen keyboard is nice but if you have a lot of typing to do, say while typing a long e-mail or document you will need this keyboard. The other keyboard that they are currently giving away and that comes in several colors is alright but there is no "feel" to it. This keyboard on the other hand is excellent. There is a real feel to the typing, much more so that the other one. The Keys are raised and have a click "feel" when you are typing. There is no number pad and for me that's a little bit of a bummer since I use the number pad all the time but I got used to it pretty quickly. It has a track pad with right and left buttons that comes in very handy at times when you are in the desk top and need to right click something. You don't need to figure out how to do it. Unfortunately though I haven't found a way to disable it so my big paws cause the pointer to move when I least expect it. ;) It doesn't require you to charge it up like other keyboards and Bluetooth keyboards. It also stays connected very well. You can believe the commercials on this one. You can really pick up the whole surface and wiggle it around without the keyboard pulling free. The back is covered with a soft felt like covering so it won't scratch surfaces and won't slide around on you.

We purchased this for those rare occasion where would need to do a lot of typing. It's required if you have any intentions of using the Surface for semi-notebook computer duties, like typing up long emails, word docs or entering loads of contacts. But maybe that's just us. To be perfectly honest, they should be selling these at a much lower price point as the build quality just isn't there. The keys feel weak and contribute to an overall impression of low quality. Since we primarily use the Surface in touch mode I don't believe this to be a show stopper but for anyone that expects to pound away on this keyboard regularly, plan on replacing it sooner than you might expect. And for what they are charging for these bad boys, it would be a much better value proposition if they integrated some additional battery capacity in there - otherwise - they should really lower the price. Seriously. + Nice secure yet convenient connectivity to the tablet - Feels cheaply constructed Provides no additional battery support like other tablet mfg's have developed for their platforms Too expensive for what you get I still believe it is a must have accessory so I stop short of recommending NOT buying it but Microsoft needs to step it up a little bit here.

    Beware Power Users!

Beware Power Users! You will disappointed to discover the function keys on the Surface Type (and Touch) Covers do not work like you would expect. To press the F1-F12 keys you need to hold down an additional Fn located on the lower right side of the keyboard. This means you can't quickly poke the function key shortcuts that you have been using for years. This gets even more ridiculous when you attempt multi-key shortcuts while holding down the Fn key. Unfortunately this is a hardware/BIOS design issue and can't be fixed with a simple software patch. There is beginning to be some negative chatter about this. For some, this is a huge design error and a productivity problem. The general feeling is that Microsoft got this wrong. Microsoft is being very quiet. If you are a power user and rely on the function key shortcuts, you are going to be frustrated with this keyboard. Before coughing up this hefty price, you might want to consider either waiting for the 2.0 Type Cover or consider a Windows Bluetooth keyboard.

Great product for the surface pro since it's dual purpose as a cover and a keyboard. It seems well made thus far with a few minor issues. First issue is that it's not backlit and this isn't a deal breaker, the issue is impartial to me because I do a lot of work with dim to no lighting. The bigger issue is the finicky connection of the keyboard to the surface. Even though it snaps in place, it doesn't always do this perfectly which results in the keyboard not working. Most people return them and complain that it's broken, but that isn't the case. When you attach it sometimes you literally have to make sure you're lining it up or keep trying to snap it on so that it makes the proper connection. This isn't a major issue either, more of a inconvenience, but nonetheless, a issue. Overall very satisfied with this product and I recommend it for those who want that traditional feel for their surface pro. Feedback is great from the keys and that's why I chose this over the other style they have.

I started with the other keyboard and constantly made typing errors. I'm good at typing but you couldn't feel the keys enough. This keyboard has a nice soft touch and just enough movement to give you the needed feedback. With this keyboard I can take meeting notes, type long emails and do almost anything I would want to do on my surface RT. My only negative, which hasn't proven true yet, is that when you flip the keyboard under to use it as a stand, it would scratch if set on a hard rough surface like concrete. I am a big fan of the Surface RT and am glad to see a strong product provide competition to the others. Batter life is excellent and it seamlessly integrates with my Windows 8 phone and Live account with Skydrive.

Got this for my Surface Pro to replace the Touch Cover I was using previously. It's soooo much better for typing because of the feel of the keys and the feedback you get as compared to the Touch. I'm probably about 90% of my speed and accuracy with a laptop keyboard and I think that's pretty good. The trackpad is tiny and almost unusable... this is for a touch device, so I get that you shouldn't really need to use it much, but there are times when it's hard to click some small controls and using the trackpad as a mouse makes sense. However, the left and right buttons are so close together and barely distinguishable by touch that I'm constantly pressing one when I want the other or accidentally scrolling to the bottom of a document and selecting all the text when really all I was trying to do was scroll down a bit. Seems a bit pricey too for a keyboard, but it's the only game in town for an attached keyboard cover for Surface.

While I personally prefer the touch keyboard over this one, the type keyboard offers an excellent typing experience that, in my opinion, is better than some laptops. When helping a friend with arthritis buy a new computer, the keyboard quality was one of the biggest deciding factors in what to buy. It needed to have big, responsive keys, and the laptops we looked at just didn't fit the bill. But this keyboard was perfect. Even though it's physically smaller over all than her last laptop's keyboard, the keys still managed to be bigger and easier to navigate. Oh, there's also a track pad below the keyboard. It's... ok. It's small. Left and right click, pinch zoom, and two finger scrolling all work, and there's an app on the store called Trackpad Settings that lets you change the scrolling direction. But the Surface tablets both support Bluetooth and USB mice, which is a much better alternative.

    OK keyboard, Lacks Important Keys

The Surface Type Cover is a decent keyboard and an important accessory to get with any Surface tablet. However, it doesn't have a numeric keypad or even a PrintScrn key, so taking screenshots can be tricky, if you don't know how to do it (hold down the Windows logo on the tablet and then press Vol. Down). The keyboard doesn't have a great deal of travel - only a few millimeters, so if you're looking for a full keyboard experience you might be better off with a different ultrabook or a different keyboard. However, if you're looking for something that will allow you to type while on the go, plus be able to sleep the device when closed while connected, this is a much better choice than the Touch Cover.

I love the Surface, but onscreen typing reduces my speed by about 20 words per minute. The touch keyboard is responsive and large enough that I can type at full speed (80 wpm). I've been using it for a few weeks, and have had no issues whatsoever. My only complaint is the lack of protection, My prior device was an iPad. The cover I had wrapped around the device, which provided great protection from minor drops, bumping walls, etc. The Touch keyboard does not. Having both the Touch keyboard and a protective cover doesn't seem like a good match. I wish I could find a single cover that provided both responsive typing and adequate protection. Until I do, the Touch keyboard will go with me everywhere.

I have both a Surface and a Surface Pro. I got the Surface the first day they were released. It came with a membrane keyboard, but I bought the Type Cover, used it and never unpacked the membrane keyboard. I bought the Surface Pro the first day it was released and moved the Type Cover to it as it did not come with any keyboard. I passed the Surface to my son at Georgia Tech who started carrying it to Tech every day and leaving his Dell Latitude in his room. After a few weeks he mentioned a desire for a better keyboard and here we are. Both the Surface and the Surface Pro work flawlessly with this keyboard. Unlike other brands of tablets the Surface series with Microsoft Office 2013 benefits from a better keyboard as you can easily actually do WORK instead of just consuming data.

If you buy the Surface, which I highly recommend, then you'll want a keyboard to go with it. Unfortunately their keyboards are sold separately. This is the higher quality keyboard. For the slimness, it has an excellent touch and responsiveness, with nice clicks with each tapping of the keyboard. I really like how easy it is to connect. Just bring it close and the magnets will pull it into place, no fuss, no muss. It starts working instantly. If you want to pull it off in the middle of typing, you can do that without damaging it. While connected it folds nicely and doesn't come loose. The detachable keyboard feature is really nice, because you can use your Surface to videochat while walking around without awkward parts hanging off of it, perhaps skyping important moments with those that cannot be there. I am going to try that.

I was in a meeting the other day, and a woman sitting next to me suddenly said, "Where did that come from?" because I had my Surface Pro on my lap with this keyboard attached, and it looked like I had a laptop all of a sudden. She couldn't figure out how she didn't see it before. That's one of the great things about this keyboard, is it gives you full laptop functionality from a tablet. My only real complaint is that it doesn't work well on your lap, whereas a laptop does really well in this situation. The reason this one doesn't do as well is that it's not solidly attached to the Surface, which isn't an issue on a table or other solid surface, but on your lap it can be an issue. I would buy it again in a heartbeat, even at full retail.

    Good Keyboard, mediocre touchpad

The sound this thing makes when you click it into the Surface is fantastic! The keyboard itself is really good. It feels nice, works well, and is a decent size. It has several nice feature keys for Windows 8 actions. The touchpad isn't amazing. It's not bad. It's usable, but not great. It has two finger scrolling and two finger tap to right click. It's got nice features. There's something about it that I don't like though. I think perhaps it's too flimsy and too hard to tell the difference between the track pad and palm rest. There's a distinction between them for sure, but when I'm using it I find my fingers getting "lost" on the pad and not really sure where the buttons are supposed to be. The touchpad is usable in a pinch, but I don't like spending a lot of time using it.

I highly recommend this cover to any Surface owners (or potential owners) looking for a keyboard to use with their device. Unlike most bluetooth solutions, this keyboard provides a high amount of functionality without compromising the form and feel of the tablet. It neatly folds against the Surface when not in use, which automatically puts the Surface in sleep mode. The keys feel great and provide a nice "click" and feedback when pressed. My only major complaint is in regards to the function keys. Particularly, users need to press and hold a separate function key in order to access the standard F1-F12 keys. This may slow productivity for users that rely on these keys often. Otherwise, this is a great product and am glad I made the purchase, even considering the price.

Magnetically couples to the surface. Good feel to the keys. The first keyboard touchpad failed after about a week. The replacement has survived a fair amount of use over the last few weeks. Lightweight and does a good job of protecting the screen when closed. The keyboard does not feel solid enough to be used in your lap, as I often do. It works well when fully supported on a desk or tray table on a plane. I do think $129 price is a bit high. I suppose that will resolve itself as 3rd party's begin to manufacture compatible products. I do recommend the keyboard as the only convenient portable alternative. Its clumsy to a wired USB keyboard and I typically don't like the responsiveness of bluetooth keyboards, especially when typing intermittently.

I have several keyboard cases for the different devices that I own. Problem is that the key spacing is not always conducive for touch typists. This keyboard does the job. I would have liked the keys to be a little heavier to the touch...sometimes I do not know if I pressed hard enough to get type the letter. Magnet does latch on to the tablet like the commercial and I have never had it accidentally disconnect. I have to consciously pull it apart. I bought this originally for the RT tablet version (with the intent of getting the Pro later and using the same keyboard) so now the total weight of the tablet is more than I would like but comparable to ipad/Zagg folio combo but I still have no qualms about the performance nor the functionality.
