The Xbox One Media Remote arrived today, and after just a couple of hours with it, I have to say I like it quite a bit. For starters, the packaging: Like all the packaging for the Xbox One and it's official accessories, Microsoft is really doing things right. No plastic clamshell cases that require scissors, a crowbar, and a blowtorch to open. Just an elegant, simple box that opens with the lift of a lid, and the contents firmly ensconsed within, sitting in a molded cardboard cradle. Lift the cardboard tray, and the two included AAA batteries are attached on the underside. Beneath the tray you will find the warranty info, manual, and quickstart guide. The first thing I noticed when holding the remote for the first time was the solidness of it. It feels very well crafted, with a nice weight to it that I wasn't expecting for such a small device. It's not heavy by any means, but it's perfectly weighted (even moreso with the batteries inserted) and doesn't feel like it will fly out of your hand while using it. Immediately after noting the weight and construction quality, I was struck by the general feel of the materials. The entire remote has a soft rubbery feel to it, adding to the overall feel that this device isn't going anywhere once you've got it in your hand. This coating does have a tendancy to attract dust, mostly on the underside of the device. Installing the batteries requires you to slide the entire back panel of the device down. There is no door, or clip to be seen, which is nice because it does not interfere with the design aesthetic. The design is simple and elegant (there are those words again), with a nice curved back that feels very comfortable in the hand, and the button placement is well thought out. The smaller size of the remote ensures that one handed operation is easy, with no stretching of the fingers or thumb to hit buttons at the extreme top or bottom of the device. The buttons themselves are very responsive, and have a nice solid feel, giving a good click/thunk when you press them. The addition of a dedicated OneGuide button is most welcome, as is the back button. The remote has a gyroscopic sensor in it that responds when you pick it up, causing the buttons to light up for a few short seconds. A very useful feature if you are watching TV in a darkened home theater, or just surfing the couch after hours with the lights out. If you have your cable box passing through your Xbox One, and have set your TV up in your settings, then the remote controls your volume and channels, mute function, and the play/pause/rewind/fast forward functions for your cable box, and the Xbox One's Blu-ray player. There's not too much more to be said. This is a simple, basic remote. There are no bells and whistles to speak of. This is not a universal remote, so if you are looking for something to control all the components in your home theater, this isn't the remote for you. If your needs are simple, though, and like me, you hate using your Xbox controller for your TV or Blu-ray viewing, than this is the way to go. This is a well made, super functional accessory that focuses on ease of use, build quality, and clean design.

I purchased this particular remote for my brother, as one of his Christmas gifts, but I have owned this remote myself for well over a year now, and I love it! When I first got it I went almost a year without even touching my XBOX One Controller, as back then I only used my XBOX One for watching Blu-rays and Netflix/VUDU/YouTube/etc. Nowadays I play Halo 5, so I do use my controller quite a bit, but anytime I'm not playing Halo I am using my XBOX One Media Remote, and I have had no issues with it since I bought it. It's also saved me quite a few charges on my rechargeable batteries, as they last a considerable amount longer in the media remote than they do in the controller. Not to mention the media remote doesn't need to be turned on, even if it's been sitting untouched for awhile, which was my main issue with using the controller for watching movies/TV. By that I mean the fact that after around 15 minutes of inactivity they (normal XBOX controllers) automatically shut off, so if I needed to pause or do anything I would have to wait a few seconds to get it turned back on, which isn't a major plus, but it is nice not to have to do that when I want to quickly pause or rewind something. Anyways, my brother has been using his media remote for a few months now, and he loves it as well. Also, we both think that one of the best features is the fact that the buttons light up anytime the controller is touched/bumped, which makes it very easy to find which button you are looking for, even in the dark (which is how a lot of people watch movies, myself included). Oh and the funny thing is, even though I didn't buy my remote from Best Buy the only reason I have it is because of a purchase I made through Best Buy. Because when I bought my most recent (Dell) laptop I received a free $25 gift card to Dell.com, which I used to order the remote for just a few dollars =)

You pretty much know what you getting just by looking at the picture. I bought this for my girlfriend because I have my tv service running through my xbox and using the regular controller or voice commands just aren't as easy for her. (Never seems to recognize her voice) so the next best thing is having this control to turn on the xbox and easily navigate through the apps, netflix, tv, etc. it does just that quite nicely. This control is very responsive with little or no lag. It is a little larger than I expected pm which is a good thing, it has a little more weight and does not feel cheap by any means. Still, using the one guide is a pain as you can't just type in the channel number since there are no number keys. You must use your existing television control or scroll though channels or favorites. Great remote if you have realistic expectations knowing its use or limitations. If there will be a remote with numbers in the future, I'll ditch this one quickly.

I bought this remote control because my wife doesn't like using the Xbox One controller to navigate the system. It definitely does what it says it does. I must say that I was surprised on how slick it looks and it's pretty self explanatory. It navigates the system pretty well and thought the way it navigates internet explorer was pretty clever. However, there are no numbers and no "keyboard" button that would let you type the channel that you want to watch. You have to hit the "oneguide" button on the controller and scroll to whatever channel you want to watch. Also, for some reason the remote doesn't communicate with the Youtube App. I've tested it with all other apps and it works so not sure what is the deal with youtube. The cost is another issue. I'm not sure that it is worth $25...I think $15-$20 should be more like it. That being said, it is pretty handy for those that want to navigate through the system #minus youtube# without using voice commands, game controllers, or keyboards.

I don't have a Kinect attached to the Xbox One that I'm using this on, so after the purchase I had to buy a infrared remote repeater. They can be found for under $10 elsewhere, but be aware that this won't work when controlling your TV without it! I can't point the remote at the Xbox One; I have to aim it up or to the side. For whatever reason, it seems that aiming it straight causes interference with the infrared remote repeater. Once I got he repeater installed and read other tips about how to aim it, it works great. I don't have to keep a controller near by, and with the backlighting, it's real easy to find the buttons I need. I bought this mainly because I use the Xbox One as my Blu-Ray/DVD player in the bedroom, and didn't want another device. It works better than a controller, as with the controller I'd hit the bumpers and jump tracks or stop the movie and then spent a few minutes getting back to the same point. With the remote, it's obvious what the button I'm pressing is going to do. It's small so it won't take up space on your nightstand either. And since it was much cheaper than a Logitech Harmony, it was a better option for me.

If you are planning on spending time with your XB1 doing more than playing games, you NEED this remote control. It appears to be pretty well made, sturdy, feels good in the hand. Best feature? It lights the backlight for a few seconds if you wiggle it. Yep. G-sensor I guess. Just pat the couch when you lose it next to you in the dark and it will happily glow so you can find it. Microsoft designers did well on this one! The back side is typical black hard plastic, but the front has a nice grippy rubberish feel to it. Popcorn-buttery or pizza-greasy fingers won't slide around so easily. Button layout is fairly simple and easy to learn. The large round button becomes Pause and Resume when we are running Netflix through the XB1. Neato ! Frankly, we haven't used the Roku 3 at all for Netflix lately. Been using the XB1 for Netflix with this lovely remote. Easier for me to use to navigate menus and apps than a game controller. Minuses, you say ? It's black, not very reflective. Smaller than most all of our other remotes. Easily lost in a darkened room while gaming/movie watching. Over all, this is an awesome Must Have accessory to purchase for your XB1.

I really like this remote. I wish it would've came bundled with the Xbox one. It's especially useful for those customers who are looking to use the Xbox one as a media entertainment center. One cool thing I like about it is when ever you pick it up it senses the motion and lights up (very useful when all the lights are off). It works on DVD menus as well so you don't have to break out the game controller just to push play. The nonslip coating feels nice but it does show a lot of oil from your fingertips, so don't eat chicken wings while trying to use this remote. I think the size is just right, but it may be too small for some people as it could easily get lost in between the couch cushions. The draw back for a few potential buyers maybe that it is dependent on the kinnect. One thing I noticed is that it for some reason it doesn't work well with the YouTube app, just like the Xbox one remote app for the iPhone. I don't know if that's my Microsoft's fault or Google's. I just know that they need to get fixed. The price is debatable, because it isn't too expensive but at the same time, I think it should sell for $10 less. Regardless, I still recommend.

Before I purchased this remote, I was worried about it lacking numbers. I thought to myself, if Microsoft was planning on making the Xbox One a central part of my living room then why would they lack basic functions of a television remote on their product. I bought the remote anyway and decided to give it a try. Using the one guide wasn't a great experience to begin with; it's too limited. And this remote limited an already limited one guide experience. Not having numbers forces me to program the one guide to save all my favorite channels so I could scroll through them only to get to the channels I like. Otherwise I have to scroll down or up using arrows to get to any channels. It would be great to have numbers. Also, the remote just doesn't work that great anyway. I have to point the remote directly and perfectly at the Xbox or it won't work. It's a pain in the butt because my Xbox sits high on my entertainment center and isn't in direct line with me when I'm sitting. My Direct TV remote works better than this and it's on the same level as my Xbox. I truly hope they release a remote with numbers in the future.

After discovering that it wasn't intuitive or easy to use the Xbox remote while watching bluray and 4K movies, we searched for an Xbox remote--much like the one we have enjoyed with our PS3. In my opinion, the PS3 remote is much better and its price is more or less justified. But we needed an Xbox remote for movie watching. Searching the options it appeared that this remote is best. I don't disagree as it is very good and does everything we want it to do. Arguably, this remote has simplified my family's movie-watching experience with the Xbox. In fact, it is very good and very solid and very intuitive. I just don't think Microsoft should charge as much as it does. Feature-wise, it lacks a lot when compared to the PS3 remote. But where this review isn't meant to be a comparison of two remotes, I will say that we are pleased with the remote and are happy we have it. It has become an essential (for us) accessory to our Xbox while we use the Xbox One for viewing 4K movies.

This emote is exactly what our family needed. We have the Xbox one hooked up to my 4K TV, and we were really excited that it was going to replace the blue ray player, however we still had the remote problem. I have remotes for Verizon TV, a 5.1 wireless surround sound system, and the 4K tv, and now I was to control the Xbox with another controller. Too much for us. This remote allowed me to control all 4 devices with one item. I programmed the Xbox so that if it turned on/off, everything turned on/off. The remote controls the sound bar and because of the Xbox live tv function, also my Verizon receiver. Flaws would be that you obviously lose you original remote's functions. We don't use the 4K as a smart TV anymore so can't easily access Netflix with one button. Likewise, the Xbox remote will not control DVR or On Demand functions from the Verizon box. It only acts as a basic remote, but if you set it up correctly, you can enjoy it like we do. I do wish it had a keyboard for easier searching, but for the price of it I'm not going to be that picky.

Pretty much does what it is supposed to. I use this with an XBOX One that's also connected to a TV Tuner and Kinect, no cable or satellite box. If you have your XBOX already set up to control your TV set it will automatically use those functions (volume, power, mute, etc.) right out of the box. It does seem a little sensitive and needs to be pointing directly at your box most of the time. A couple of times there has been a bit of a delay after a button press but it hasn't happened regularly. It will control video playback as well as basic navigation around the XBOX menus. It has a button dedicated to OneGuide, which is pretty handy. Seems pretty well built. It's pretty small and maybe a little more slippery than you might expect. Texture reminds me of a slightly smoother XBOX controller stick. Buttons light up whenever you pick up or move the remote. All in all pretty basic but seems to get he job done. However you may want to consider some of the slightly cheaper options that might not be quite as well built but do the same things.

As I'm a big fan of streaming services I thought I'd give it a try. Personally I thought it was expensive (because "Hello from Seattle") and wouldn't get the job done... I was wrong. Not only it does the job (thank goodness now I won't have to turn my controller on after 30 minutes to pause/FF/etc on my movies/shows) but it's well designed too. It's backlit buttons only light up when the remote senses motion (or impact if you let it fall... no one's judging, and it's tiny so it can happen!) There are no unnecessary buttons, and apparently you can use it to control your TV if the Xbox One can communicate with it too. It's able to turn on/off the console, control media being played on it and if you're on a lazy mood, you CAN use it to browse any app or the Store to make some purchases. The one thing it doesn't do? Sandwiches. And play games, for that you have to use the controller.

I love the X-Box one A/V Integration, and if you have a working Kinect, you really don't need this control... you can also use a game controller to perform the same functions. But if you are like me and got screwed by your X (not Ex) and your Kinect no longer talks to you so you are SOL from using Cortana to control your A/V viewing, and if you don't want to fumble with a game controller to watch the real football game, than go ahead and get this very simple remote and use it to control your X Box One. Only problem is this is NOT Bluetooth, it is ONLY IR so for non-tech's that means if someone or something is in the line of sight to the X-Box it wont work! However, that also means it will work out of the box without paring it to your particular Xbox. So you could take it to a friends house and mess with their Xbox! Have fun!

Small, compact with all basic functions at hand. Can be programmed for your TV, receiver and set top. Button layout is my only concern, but it could just be me. The back button is right above the VOL+ and yeah, my fat fingers end up exiting out when I'm trying to turn up the sound. The mute button in the center has almost no relief and I miss hitting sometimes. I have noticed even though I'm less than 10 feet away, I'll tap a VOL button and nothing happens. Then, after a few seconds with my finger off the buttons, the volume on the receiver rapidly changes numbers as if there was a lag in commands. Not sure if it the remote or the receiver. Makes for some interesting sound moments though. It would also be nice to have colored button equivalents (may be in the manual, but I rarely read manuals) since apps like Netflix display buttons on the controller for functions. Overall, it's useful, smaller than my Harmony remote but still get the job done.

I purchased the remote because besides playing games I watch a lot of Netflix, Hulu, Crunchyroll and various other online video services. My favorite thing about the remote is that it lights up just by picking it up which is great when you're watching a lot of things in the dark. You no longer have to search for the illuminate button on the remote. My least favorite thing is that the remote doesn't always work well in every app. It'll work fine on your home screen and then when I get in an app I can't select with the d-pad. That's a major flaw particularly when It seems to work perfectly in one app then barely at all in another. I hate using my controller because it powers down by itself and I don't like to power it up just to pause what I'm watching or select another movie. I'm tempted to try other third party remotes if not from the warning on Microsoft's website that the controller doesn't work with all apps. good grief.

I have 3 tvs. i use harmony remotes on the 2 home theater setups in the basement and living room due to all the components. Love them, highly recommended. For our bedroom, its just a tv, cable box and now an xbox one (to be used 95% of the time as a media device, not games) so to keep things simple and cheap, went with the official Media Remote. It is made of a nice soft-touch rubber/plastic and feels nice in your hand. all the important buttons are there for watching tv, netflix, etc. There is a dedicated OneGuide button too. I really like the backlit buttons that automatically lightup when the remote is picked up. no searching for the "light button" like the cable box remote. the IR range is really good too; i dont have to be real particular where i aim the remote and it just works, every time. if you do a alot of media watching or run your cable box through your xbox one and dont have the funds or need for a fancier harmony remote, this is an excellent option.

I have my cable box hooked up through my xbox, which is one of my favorite features of the xbox one. It makes switching between inputs so much easier. I was hoping this remote would replace my TV remote and the xbox controller (for non gaming purposes), and while it does do that to an extent, I still find myself using my TV remote frequently. Between the features that aren't featured on the xbox one remote (numbers, dvr access are the biggest omissions), and the fact that the remote usually doesn't work unless it's pointed directly at the console, and usually needs to be situated directly in front of the console, I find myself wishing I'd just saved the money. I don't know if I got a lemon, or if this is typical, but it was a bit disappointing. If you don't have your cable box hooked up to your xbox like I do, or more specifically are using the xbox on a secondary TV, then this would probably be a good purchase. For someone in my case, save the $.

I was excited about having a control peripheral that I could use that did not require me to constantly keep my controllers active and/or take time to turn them back on when i needed to pause the action. In that basic capacity, this remote does its job well. However, it is far less forgiving in terms of distance and line of sight in that you MUST be no more than six or seven feet to reliably control things and you MUST not have even partial obstruction. It has to have a clear line to the XBOX One or it simply does not work. I have had other issues it not always being able to register clicks and using for keyboard strokes is incredibly frustrating, but those are infrequent issues, so not a constant negative. I'd like to say that the convenience and the saving on my controller battery outweighs the negatives, but I don't feel that they do. At best, this was a 50/50 purchase.

I bought this remote for my Xbox One in hopes that it would make it easier for my wife and kids and to use video streaming apps on the Xbox One. In that respect I would say the product does what it is intended to do. It is a lot nicer to use this remote to navigate the menu for those apps with the remote and to me the biggest thing is that if we are streaming a movie we do not have to worry about having to restart a controller to pause the movie. This was always a problem previously, so it is a lot nicer that the remote works whenever you need it to and doesn't power off like the controllers do. I would have preferred if this would have worked without needing line of sight to the Xbox One, but that is a minor gripe for most people. I previously had the Xbox One set up in a closet and this remote would not work for that setup. Overall a good remote with some minor annoyances.

As a remote, it works. The quality is nice and much more pleasant to work with over the controller. It is way more friendly for people who do not like using controllers, like my parents. My gripe is that it has almost the same exact functionality as the controller. There is no List or DVR button or any other extras. Not to mention that it communicates via IR. That means you have to point it at your Xbox One, not the Kinect. And the IR that is puts out is super weak, you might as well get up. A much better solution is to load up the Xbox One Smart Glass App on one of your phones or tablets you have around the house. If you set up your Xbox One properly and use the Kinect Smart Glass App it has every feature/button that you could want. I can control my entire setup and not spend money on the remote. 2 stars for the good build quality and feel but lack of buttons.
