This movie delves into Sherlock Holmes after he retires. It is 1947 and his memory is fading. He is trying to remember why he retired but cannot. He knows his last case was the reason but he forgot all the details. He lives in a cottage keeping his bees with a housekeeper and her son.
Ian Holmes puts in a great performance. This movies is very under rated. Nicholas Rowe from Young Sherlock Holmes has a cameo in this movie, he played the on-screen Sherlock when Holmes goes to the movies...

It was a strong personal tale with a weak mystery. It was about Holmes dealing with mortality and a failed case in his past that he could not remember. His relationship with a steward boy who's mother takes care of Holmes estate is the best part of the movie. It's almost a "passing of the torch" movie. Those looking for a great sleuth flick will be disappointed. Those looking for a great indie film with some cool Holmesian easter eggs will be pleased.

I bought this as a present, because it was Sherlock & the superb actor Ian McKellen. A movie about Sherlock in his declining years wasn't as appealing as a plot, but I remembered how good a job George C. Scott did in 'They Might Be Giants' & decided to risk it. The DVD was fine and I wasn't very interested in extras, so the sale price made it an easy choice.

My two tweens really enjoyed the Robert Downey Jr Sherlock Holmes movies, so we thought this movie was going to be action packed, but this one is more for adults in the sense that there is not much action. It's a good story, but you have to pay close attention and follow the movie closely.

Simply LOVED this movie! it is like no other movie ever about the legendary Sherlock Holmes, sensitively and eloquently depicting his classic, yet heart-wrenching response to the ravages of ageing, serving mankinds' best interests by solving a mystery in the face of his deteriorating deductive powers and memory. Sensitive, intelligent, masterfully told depiction of his great "closing act"!

The Brits always do a great job at developing the story's characters first then telling the story. The story they tell here is methodical (just like Holmes) then runs quickly to the end. Makes you think who done it!

Director Bill Condon explores a very different Sherlock Holmes, one who has reached the end of his career and is questioning his own abilities. There is a real pathos to this Holmes, but the film is well worth seeing.

Delightful movie, good acting all around. Lots of layers and ways to look at the relationships a la Erik Erikson; integrity vs despair of old age, the mentoring to a younger generation, as well as the effect of ageing and trauma on memory. Was able to see Ian McKellen as a separate character, not just as Gandalf

It was nice to see the Sherlock Holmes story done in a different was. Serious verses comical. I prefer the way it is told and Sir Ian McKellen. The retired detective with his memories are sharp as ever.

Mr. Holmes is a unique take on the Sherlock Holmes story taken from the perspective of Holmes in his later years. Ian McKellen and Laura Linney star in this gem of a movie set mostly in the English countryside. If you love Sherlock Holmes and enjoy great acting then I think you will enjoy this movie.

I've been a Holmes fan for years and was hesitant to watch this, but pleasantly surprised. Ian McKellen did a fine job portraying an aged Sherlock Holmes. I would recommend this movie, and have done.

Ian McKellen turns in yet another outstanding performance in this new twist on the Sherlock Holmes' legacy: Holmes' memory is failing him as he tries to solve a mystery from deep in his past. The always-wonderful Laura Linney provides excellent support in this unique, thought-provoking movie.

The richness of the characters, and especially the scenery, in this movie was outstanding! If you're expecting an "action" movie, you'll be disappointed. But it's a good story and worth watching!

I love Sherlock Holmes and Ian McKellan, so naturally I purchased this movie. It was a really depressing movie though, so I'm not sure I will ever watch it again, even though it was really good.
