I've been a long time mac user, but I've also had a gaming desktop for about a year. I decided I wanted something more out of my laptop that Apple was never going to offer. After searching through laptop reviews, and gaming laptop reviews, I stumbled upon MSI's latest offering.
I've had it up and running for a few days, and holistically love it, even with a few quirks.
Pros:
+Big beautiful bright screen
+Steelseries keyboard's leds, numberpad and silentness
+I like the powerbutton on the side, prevents me from hitting it when cleaning the keyboard, and is great for an external monitor.
+ i7-6700HQ, 16GB memory, and the 1060 are an outstanding combination. I've played some battlefield & GTA V without issues.
+ Fans are pretty silent, even after gaming for a while, it doesn't sound like I'm sitting over the engine of a jet.
+ Temps feel comfortable as well
+ Boot times / read & write speeds
"Cons" (for what their subjectivity is worth):
- Battery life (as expected from a fully loaded system this thin)
- The firmness of the keyboard (coming from a Macbook its going to take some time to get used to, but writing this isn't that bad)
- Location of the power port. On the right hand side isn't so bad, but being so close to the other ports and if run horizontally will be in the way of a mouse. If run around the back of the computer it's not so in the way.
-Speakers sound subpar for this level laptop
- The trackpad's size and location are quite annoying to me. It's right under the space bar, and wide enough that when you rest your palms, you move the mouse around as you type.
--- My biggest con with this laptop is the 1tb drive. Its a mechanical drive at 5400rpm. Would have really loved an SSD. So my first thought was to upgrade it myself to a Samsung EVO 1TB, but the last screw on the bottom was covered by a "warranty void if removed" sticker. Why?

As a PC gamer I was excited by Nvidia's announcement of their Pascal based GPUs and was floored when they announced their notebook counterparts matched the performance of their desktop variants within 5%. When I found out the Best Buy near my work had one of these in stock just a couple weeks after the announcement, I knew I wanted to get one to try out. I'm glad I did!
Currently, the Pascal graphics processors (Titan X(P), GTX 1080, 1070, and 1060) are the fastest graphics processors for any notebook or desktop. The 1060 family is marketed to allow very high to ultra settings for 1080P gaming as well as optimization for VR. It also includes all of Nvidia's new tech such as Ansel to allow high resolution screenshots of supported games. The performance will match or perform faster than GTX 970-980 desktop based graphics cards of last generation and will trade blows with the desktop Radeon RX480, besting it in DX11 games by average of 5-10% in many titles. Basically the GTX 1060 in this machine will destroy almost every gaming laptop running the previous generation GTX 9x0M series graphics cards and trading blows with the insanely large and heavy SLI-M gpu, and desktop class GPU notebooks running the desktop variant 980. From testing, the GPU automatically overclocks up to 1911Mhz automatically due to temperature/power curve using GPU Boost 3.0 technology, which is impressive for such a thin design. Fan noise for normal usage is quite quiet but does get slightly noisy for CPU/GPU intensive tasks and gaming.
The 1TB HDD included is a 7mm thick HGST 5400 RPM drive with average read/write scores of 95MB/s, 100MB/s. As for the included 128GB SSD, you're getting a basic SATA m.2 Toshiba drive with a sequential read write performance of ~ 510MB/s and 440MB/s. It's disappointing they didn't include an NVMe based SSD; but for a 128GB OS drive, I find this as an acceptable compromise due to the current high prices for large NVMe drives. However, I would strongly suggest replacing the included mechanical drive with a SSD. Load times for my modded Fallout 4 takes well over a minute give or take 30 seconds to load from Steam. Swapping out the magnetic drive with a 1TB 850 Evo is the best upgrade I can ask for on this machine! Before opening, I've verified with MSI breaking the "warranty" sticker will not void the factory warranty as long as damage was not done to the machine.
Overall, I'm quite pleased with this machine besides the slow mechanical drive performance. Then again, I'm used to using SSDs on my main desktop PCs and laptops in the past. Another real complaint is the mediocre color accuracy of this display. Delta E is over 2.5 still after calibration, and even though this is an IPS panel, it's a 6-bit instead of the more common 8 bit panel. Otherwise, viewing angles are great, there's minimal to no backlight bleed, and grayscale is quite good. Overall, This machine combines the perfect size and weight with an impressively powerful GPU. Battery life timed in at 3 hours, 45 Minutes when tested using Laptop Mag's listed testing standard of 100 nits brightness and mixed wifi surfing. Dropping the brightness down to much dimmer but still easily visible allows over 4 hours run time for battery.
Ultimately, I'm still in awe after close to 3 weeks of ownership of what this thin and lite machine can do!

I needed a gaming laptop that would allow me to play the latest games on the go. the new GTX 10 series laptops were announced only a few months ago. I was excited to see the performance ratio to its desktop brethren. I was surprised to see that it was only roughly 2-3% drop from a desktop 1060. I have tested out Rise of The Tomb Raider on Very High - 88 FPS, Witcher 3- Ultra 44-46 FPS, Quantum Break Ultra- 56 FPS, needless to say this card can handle anything you through at it! I was even able to hook it up to 4k monitor using the thunderbolt port and had tomb raider running at 33FPS in 4k. The startup time was amazing as it takes less than 5 seconds with the 128 GB SSD . The Cpu is snappy enough to process tasks on every thing I have given it. I have been using Photoshop as well as NUKE, Corel and Unreal Game engine with no slow down or overly long processing times. The Keyboard is amazing as its a Steelseires and built with very high quality. The Screen is solid enough, images are vibrant and crystal clear allowing for a great gaming experience on the go. If your Using as a desktop replacement, I would highly suggest a great IPS/ or 4k Monitor.
I would recommend this laptop to any gamer that wants desktop performance with the option to upgrade to 32GB ram in future.

I bought this laptop a month ago. I had researched gaming PC's for nearly three months prior to purchase. I was going to go with an Alienware model, but decided on this little gem instead. The price was lower, the specs were better, and the new and improved thermal technology made it the clear favorite for me. I've had no issues with this machine to date. It's fast, plays games flawlessly, and doesn't overheat. The battery life is the only gripe, but that's to be expected in a gaming PC, especially one with a desktop GPU. I would recommend a quality laptop cooler for gaming though.

I needed to upgrade my laptop because it was almost 8 years old. I was looking something that would be powerful, but would not look so nerdy/gamey. A lot of the gaming laptops tend to suffer the way that running shoes do - they tend to be overly ornate and IMO, ugly. This laptop is not only thin, which was very important, but it is very nice looking. If Quad core is a must, and you will see yourself gaming, look no further, unless you need substantial battery life. I am glad that the backlit keyboard can be turn off, and that you can adjust the colors. I do not see myself using the backlit keyboard too often. If it had a better battery life, This would have gotten a 5 star for sure. The laptop gets hot and the fans can be kind of loud if you are not used to a gaming laptop. The felt material bottom is a nice touch to be able to use the laptop on your actual lap. I use this for work (Autocad and 3ds max, sketchup), and it performs well.
Pros: Thin, lightweight, has number pad, has plenty of ports, looks nice, good build quality, quad code, Nvidia GTX 1060 (no more 9 series!!), backlit keyboard, good wifi card, SSD HD, has secondary drive, 16gb RAM.
Cons: 1)The placement of the AC adapter, it should be located at the rear or the upper corner, instead it is in the middle of the side. If y are gig to do this MSI, why not make the plug straight out instead of an L shape? 2)Battery life is pretty bad, I think you will be lucky to get 2hrs, even less if you play a game(although it might be laggy). 3) Speakers are pretty bad. The location is bad (under the laptop), and they sound bad. It is easy enough to either hook up an external speaker or bluetooth speaker if you really need to.

This pc is wonderful when gaming but comes with some software that doesn't work well with it... Once I started the computer it's super fast and light weight but does run kinda hot... the pc comes with two softwares that I had to uninstall to get the sound to work correctly and to make WOW to actually work on the key board....as this is a software issue I'm losing one star but was very frustrating.
First one for the audio program you can uninstall the nahonic 2 software and re install it other wise my sound was very awful. After the fix works beautifully.
The other was some gaming software I don't recall at the moment. But if was a problem that interacted with my keyboard when gaming.... I couldn't use wasd at all... I was able to google it and uninstall and worked fine again.
The computer allows me after the fixes to run Wow on high settings and works flawlessly on any game I have tired! I do use a lap desk as it does run hot. Battery while gaming greatly reduces the battery life but doing other things does last longer.. while gaming I get like a hour and a half. That's running WOW, discord, addons, and my music programs on the back. With screen at 10% backlight. On average is runs down while gaming 1% a minute. Doubles the time with just web surfing!
Keyboard light is total customizable in cool and is beautiful!
Has the ability to use hdmi for a second screen big bonus for me!
Just remember there will need to be some fixes once you get it.

Beautiful Laptop, Defective Within a Week

I have real mixed feelings about this laptop. Let me start out saying that the laptop I got ended up dying within a week and I did return it and exchanged it for a different brand. The CPU fan started making a grinding noise and, after a few days, stopped working causing the laptop to overheat.
That being said, I don't feel this laptop deserves 1 star. I likely just had bad luck and got a bad unit. I searched online about the issue to see if anyone else ran in to the problem and while there are a few reports of similar issues, it doesn't appear to be a wide-spread problem.
The reason I'm holding off giving it a 1 star review is that there's a LOT to love about the laptop assuming you get one that is reliable.
Screen: The screen is quite good. It's bright, with vivid colors and decent black levels. It's an IPS panel and there is a moderate amount of IPS glow, so keep that in mind. The unit I received had no appreciable back-light bleed, though, which is fantastic.
Build Quality: Outside of the fan issue I had, the build quality is exceptional. The unit is built of sturdy aluminum with no sharp edges and looks very attractive. One of the nicest looking laptops I've ever used. Plus it's incredibly light for how much horsepower is under the hood.
Performance: Top notch performance. This laptop will run any game, most at high detail settings. The SSD will boot the system in seconds and keep the whole thing feeling snappy. I did not have one single complaint about the performance. It's a monster powerhouse of a system.
Bloatware: The bloat was pretty bad, as is to be expected (unfortunately) of a retail laptop. Be prepared to clean it up or just reinstall the OS. Far from the worst I've ever seen though.
So, should you take the chance on one and buy it? I'll leave that up to you. If you're lucky enough to get a reliable system, you'll likely be extremely happy with it. The silver lining, I guess, is that the system died within the return policy.
I hope this review was at least somewhat helpful. I'm disappointed that I had the problems with the system. It's otherwise my ideal gaming laptop.

I am a software engineer and university professor for a Computer Science department, so I am very picky about my laptop.
This is the fourth MSI laptop I have owned. I started with the GT60, then the GS60, then the GE62 and finally this one. Don't get me wrong, I am by FAR not a fan boy, I had Macbooks, Lenovos, etc... but I keep iterating over MSI for I know the work they are putting in evolving and building on top the solid foundation they started developing since the GS series. I am currently writing this from my own GS63VR.
Form factor wise, MSI nailed it by shrinking and polishing the GS60's design. The laptop is slim, light, edges are round and soft, palm rest is a pleasure to put your hands on, screen hinges have the perfect pressure, you name it, everything you could think of, is there. The screen is by far not flimsy, and it feels really sturdy, very premium quality. I was holding my breath on my first startup since I am a maniac of back bleed, it is a HUGE deal breaker for my. At least my unit is PERFECT. MSI corrected all the bad panels assembly they did with the GS60's panels (which by the way returned due to several problems). Quality wise, the screen could be one of the best screens I've ever laid eyes on, not to mention the software MSI provides for customizing many other system features, including color profiles, brightness etc.
The keyboard is steelseries... Oh man, I will cry and cry if someday MSI moves away from steelseries. As a computer programmer, the keyboard is aother deal-breaker for me... I spend probably +12 hrs a day just typing on this thing, and should the feel is not right, it would literally make my life miserable.
Ports wise, there is no way you would find yourself wanting more, 4 usbs, thunderbolt 3 (40 Gbps), HDMI full size, Ethernet, display port, mic and headphones, SD card, Kensington lock... it is just unbelievable ... I am a triple monitor user and this laptop laughs at it.... it doesn't even break a sweat. Colling is quiet, smart and very customizable. There is only 1 button, the power on, that's it! forget about all the hardware buttons form the past. Most of the features are software controlled, which brings me to the Soft. MSI puts in this thing.
Usually I would rant about bloatware, but MSI has been putting a LOT of effort in a unified-system-oriented software, called the dragon center... you can do ANYTHING system wise.. keyboard, screen, fans.. everything can be controlled and customized, except for audio, which is controller by another proprietary software called Nahimic. They update version regularly, which indicates this is not a dead commercial piece of code, but that there is real effort, goals and continuity.
I am not even mentioning the performance since if you are looking into this system, you know what a monster it is, hardware-wise. The GPU is a beast, the CPU is amazing, RAM is glorious and the OS on top of everything is just out of this world.
Last and not least, the price will make you feel you are robbing best buy... premium laptops like Dell XPS 9550 etc.. cannot compete at this price range... when I saw the system published, I new t would sold out (as it did) in less than 2-3 days.
Give it a shot, you would thank yourself for a long while.
Future proof, 100%

I really wanted a gaming laptop that I could also use for work. After careful consideration, I chose this one. It is incredibly light, fast, comfortable, and while it gets warm... it doesn't get burn your skin off hot. I would recommend this laptop for everyone! It's pretty much perfect, however, there are some things I don't like about it: where the power button is placed (I turn it off by accident), the speakers (it took me forever to get the sound right.... was like being underwater), and the very short battery life when not plugged in (2 hours max).

Let me start off by saying I returned a Razer Blade for this laptop. I'm all about price and what you get for the MSI price is fantastic compared to the $2,000 you have to spend on a Razer.
The MSI GS63VR is overall a great laptop. The one con is the speakers. They are lacking bass, really bad.
I have the 1080p model wiht 16gb ram and the 128ssd. I am definitely going to swap out the included 5400 rpm 1tb drive for a faster ssd.
The track pad is really good for an MSI product, one of their best yet. However, it is no Macbook track pad. This laptop is thin and light and play just about any game. Black Ops 3 runs around 80-90 fps on high settings. I have tried other games such as Minecraft, CSGO, and Star Wars Battlefront all without any issues. There is a great Youtube review on this product on the "D2D" site. He always has good reviews.
If you want a solid laptop that is thin and light then look no further. It performs well and is VR ready as well. The speakers could be improved upon, but a simple use of headphones fixes that immediately.

My wife uses it for gaming and it is a great laptop for that. She plays Ark Survival Evolved at max settings just fine. Being the stealth model it is very thin and light, which makes her gaming very comfortable, but the lack of I thermal space means it does generate some heat. Not taking any stars off for that, that's the trade-off for this type of model, but the use of a desk or lap desk is essential.

This laptop is a powerhouse let's not kid anyone. The laptop is fast the graphics can hold up to pc's and the aesthetics are great. I came from a gs60 ghost pro and the fans on this one are a lot quieter, in some aspects. The cpu fan on the stealth has a high pitched whine to it when it picks up, on idle the fans are much quieter than the ghost and even when under stress the fans are still more manageable but that whining noise can get to you, if there is not much game noise, video noise etc.
The keyboard has a great feel to it my spacebar didn't come with the squeak that so often arrives in the msi steelseries keyboards. The color led's are beautiful to look at. The touchpad is your average touchpad, according to mac users their trackpad is to die for, and ive never really cared since i just attach a usb dongle for a wireless mouse, but from all the laptops ive used, i dont see any real difference, its just good.
The harddrive is a chugger, idk why they would reduce it to a 5400 rpm hdd instead of the 7200 rpm hdd like the ghost pro had, but I switched that right out with an sdd the first day i got it. So this would be a negative if you're looking for right out of the box performance, but I was in it for the long haul with this laptop so i went for it. The OS came installed onto the SDD so all i had to do was clone my old HDD to the new SDD and just replace it, simple as that.
The speakers are one of the biggest criminals here, the sound is very very very tinny. I've tried changing drivers from nahimic but that sound is still there, if you wear headphones a lot then it wont matter, but these speakers are subpar at best.
The build is very astounding in this laptop compared to the ghost i had before, everything is tight and sturdy, nothing seems cheap (other than the speakers).
All in all this is a great laptop minus a few inconveniences (peakers and whiny cpu fan) and a mediocre hdd that really irk you. If you want a gaming laptop thats as powerful as pc's then this laptop is more than enough for most. It will be more expensive to get than building yourself a pc including the new sdd purchase. It could be a perfect 5/5 but with inconveniences it hits just a 4/5

My 1.5 year old Asus G751J with its 965 nvidia card began to show its limitation on the newer games by not maintaining 30fps at the minimum despite reducing the eye candy. I used it for work too and lugging it around to test network equipment was not the best experience :-)
I got this a month ago after reading all the reviews, I can say I made the right decision.
Pros:
+ lightweight - great if your work requires you to move around a lot to test equipment
+ great video card - i haven't played anything without reducing the eye candy and I get an average of 50-60 fps with most major titles (with AA off ).
+ my asus 180 watt brick works with this :-) so no need to carry the power adapter between home and work.
+ Great keyboard with loads of lighting options, better than average trackpad, good performance due to i7, 16gb ddr4 and toshiba 128gb m.2 sata ssd combination.
Concerns/Observations:
- Heat - I was prepared for the heat issues after reading and watching reviews. if you game on a sofa, a cushioned laptop pad is highly recommended. Temp can hover around 70-80 with the 3 fans in "sports mode".
- Replacing the 5400 1TB hdd - since i had bought an 960gb SSD previously, i decided to replace the slow HDD it came with. Please take care and keep in mind that a warranty void sticker blocks a screw to open the case. The bottom case is plastic and try to use a plastic spudger to carefully go around the edges to pry the cover open. Do not apply too much force as the little plastic clips can break. The hdd is placed quite close to the LED status board and the right speaker. Before removing the HDD carefully look around its edges.
Overall, great machine so far.

This gaming laptop is perfect in my opinion. Before buying this, I was looking for a new GTX 10 series gaming laptop, light to travel, good looking, trustable brand. And it all matches my wants! Great performance in games. I played Overwatch, forza horizon 3, LOL mostly. And all are on high or ultrA graphics. Actually Forza did not because it is a very new game and needs to be optimized. Other than that, very smooth in LOL and Overwatch, feel like over 70 FPS. Also, it is unbelievably light and thick (looks like my 2013 MacBook Pro 15inch.) Although thick and you might worry about the cooler, this laptop's trinity cooler boost does amazing job in cooling while playing games!
The disadvantage you may notice:
1. battery: It is very bad compared to MacBook in daily office or school usage. Only about 2 hours without charging.
2. Speaker: the Realtek audio system actually does good job in sounding. However, this thing's driver is awkward. I spent a lot of time fixing the popping sound coming from gaming in some new games like Forza Apex 6. just uninstall the new driver and go back to the older version might fix. I say MIGHT FIX.
3. Keyboard Very easy to get dirt. Keyboard is very cool. The touching feeling, backlit lighting, it is just amazing. However, compared to my MacBook, much easier to get dirt. Maybe because of the black color.
Overall, it is amazing and I love it so much. Regard it as a baby actually LOL. Actually it deserves 4 stars because of the cons (make me frustrated sometimes). But the brand, the laptop, stimulates me to give 5 stars.

First of all I am a hardcore PC gamer. I recently spent 3k on a desktop build back in February of 2016. My desktop has a gtx 980 ti, 32gig ddr4, 6700k i7 processor. After gaming on this beast of a desktop for months and deciding I wanted something more mobile as well... I wish I would have waited and spent the money on the MSI top of the line laptop.. the 1060 is perfect for my needs. It is super mobile, light, great for graduate school work and even better for gaming on the go. I can play all the games i play on my desktop at near quality. If i could go back I would buy the 1080 version of this beast machine. MSI you can't go wrong with the 10 series laptops.

This laptop is a decent mid range gaming machine and very light.
The i7 and the 1060 6gb video card handle most games at high detail as long as you are plugged in. When not plugged in to a power source the computer will only use the intel HD graphics processor. and there is no way to change this.
That being said if you were to use the 1060 while on battery power your battery life would be under 30 minutes.
Other than the above it's been a great laptop, it weighs @3.8 pounds and has a nice brushed aluminum case. it has a light up LED keyboard that's semi customize-able.
It has a decent amount of ports
3 USB ports.
1 USB-C port.
1.Thunderbolt port
1. Mini Display-port
1. HDMI port
1. SD card reader

it also has wi-fi and bluetooth.
it does get warm when playing games, a cooler pad is recommended.

I got this machine with the idea of using it as a portable powerhouse for programming, testing and running numerically intensive computations using both the CPU and GPU. I had high expectations, aside from using it for comfortable portable gaming. On the outside the design is attractive and looks solid, those shiny rainbow colors on the lit keyboard are eye catching... can't deny that...the combined CPU+GPU specs can be attractively deceiving. Unfortunately it failed on the most basic of things. Storage: small average 128GB SSD and extremely under-performing 1TB secondary data hard drive. Can't install any software on the slow 1TB without running into sporadic freezing episodes and cpu stuttering. Some programs delay to much into opening or closing. After two days of using the machine I had it twice failing from recovering from sleep mode. The battery life is extremely poor, 1:50 min max. Runs hot, can't sit comfortable on my lap for the occasional night time gaming or web surfing, and both the GPU and CPU fans are quite noisy, always on.. regardless of how you set the power settings or cpu usage. BEWARE, the display adapter defaults to the accompanying cheap Intel HD graphics 530, which under performs for normal tasks like watching YouTube videos or playing movies. The GPU kicks in only when you play games or if using applications that implement CUDA instructions. etc. Speakers sound horribly cheap. You need to use a pair of good high definition headphones, which presumably you do if you are a gamer. The price ticket of this item with added TAX and the necessary extended warranty (things that run hot don't last long, so you need warranty if you can afford it) was not worth my investment, nor the wasted time on repairing, installing/uninstalling software or else trying to figure out how to fix stuff for this specific brand. A product is good quality if it works flawlessly right out from the box, and given the amount of money you pay upfront, I can't rate this item even in fair rating because it failed. I think I'll be better off building a gaming desktop and purchasing a decent laptop that delivers where is needed. Perhaps a case of bad luck,... well, luck tails with money, and I feel like not wasting it. Definitively returning this item.

I highly recommend this gaming notebook. It has a very nice overall exterior. The aluminum body feels solid and the backlit keyboard is fantastic. The display is clear but nothing special at 1920 x 1080. The processor is not bad. The video card, memory and hard drives are where this system excels - a large 1 TB drive for data, and a PCIe SSD for the OS. The 16 GB of GDDR4 RAM definitely does the job. And the video card holds up extremely well to anything I have throwm at it. The three cooling fans keep the processor and video card temperatures down under load. Thermal management is very good - intakes above and below, with the fans venting out to the sides and back of the system. Insulation on the bottom keeps you from getting burned when using the system under load on your lap. Disconnected from an outlet, this notebook will automatically switch to a integrated graphics chipset to save power. For web browsing the battery holds up for hours - over 3 at least. Light gaming decreases this, but that's to be expected. All in all, I am extremely impressed with this ultralight desktop replacement.

I needed something to play Civilization 6 on. My old Dell Studio didn't have compatible graphics and my Surface Pro 3 fell on the floor and broke the screen.... not sure if it would run well on it anyway. I went to BB and checked out what they had in the store. The MSI Stealth is much thinner and lighter than any gaming laptop I've seen. It's simple. Coming from a MS Surface Pro with touch screen and much higher screen resolution might seem backwards, but I have realized that a mouse and keyboard will outperform a touchscreen in most situations. Power and capacity is more important and this thing has plenty! One thing that isn't very good is the speakers. They are lousy, but the sound quality from the headphone jack is superb, way better than my previous computers and smart phones. The keyboard is very good. Wifi reception is great where the signals are weak. I'm really happy with my purchase! I'm not a big gamer, but I do like Civilization and Minecraft. This computer runs those games super smooth with all the graphics options maxed out on 1080 x 1920. The Surface Pro 3 struggled with Minecraft.
