I was surprised by how well this sounded. It's small but the speaker is better than most $100 to $200 big speakers. I love this thing, I highly recommend this product

You're only limited by your imagination (and Matter/Google's ecosystem, and software library maintenance, and the tech economy's hardware offerings). Anyways, the point is: yes, voice activation and automation for various things does improve your quality of life if you set it up properly. For me the biggest three things have been: Google Newsstand, Spotify, and voice-activated lights, and setting reminders for the next morning has been nice, too. That said, you can get all that with your phone using the Google Home and Google Assistant apps, so what's the big deal? Not fussing with your phone or keeping it in your pocket all the time, and having a nice enough speaker with no bass channel so you don't annoy your neighboring apartment or roommate. So, who should buy it? Anyone with a small amount of disposable income and 600+ sq ft residential area, and anyone with a smaller residential area who also wants an okay speaker but doesn't really know what to get and doesn't want to do a lot of research or pay more for a JBL. Bad things! Doesn't hold a conversation even with Gemini, doesn't work with Audible because of Amazon being a doof about Echo/Alexa, and you will have to train yourself to make use of it and commit to giving it a task once a day at first just so that you don't forget about it for months or longer.

I was very hesitant at first of this speaker was worth it. It has more volume than expected and I truly recommend. It’s perfect for a small room and does the work. Thanks Google

Bought two of these on sale and we love them! We purchased some smart outlets and LED light strips (from another store) to hook them up to the google assistant so that she can turn them on by command or by timers on the app! Loud enough to play music throughout the house and we love how compact they are...you can even clip/stick them under cabinets to conceal wires and get it off the counter!

Big sound from little device! It’s not a full blown home theater system but it definitely adds to my whole house music experience. And also controls my lights and thermostat!

Mini 2 was same price as Mini 1, so we got the 2nd generation and were SO pleased with the first one that we purchased a second one on the same day! Easy to install app and set up. Rarely have used the touch commands because the voice command "hey google... play (whatever name station you prefer) station on Pandora" with "increase volume XX%" or "decrease volume XX%" being the most used commands. Have even used "hey google, what time is it" or "hey google, tell me a joke" being useful. Great purchase!

Love the google minis but the use of features requires research and isnt as intuitive as initially thought. Integration with smart home devices is good but if i say hey google turn off “the floodlight” the answer’s always “im sorry i dont know how to help with that!!” (Im sorry……. “turn off floodlight”. Then get the response “ ok turning off “THE” Floodlight” i’m sure if I renamed it the floodlight it would not be a problem, but something as simple as that shouldn’t confuse Google

    • Brand response from Nest Support
      Posted .

Hey there, JMoore6511. Thanks for posting your review of the Nest Mini. We're sorry to hear that you're experiencing some difficulties with voice control with the device. We suggest that you retrain your device to better recognize your voice as this may help with voice control. We also suggest adjusting the Hotword sensitivity as it may also be helpful with the issue. You may follow the steps below to help improve your experience:

      Retrain Voice Match:
      - On your phone or tablet, open the Google Home app.
      - At the top right, tap your Profile picture or initial and then Assistant settings and then Voice Match.
      - Tap Teach your Assistant your voice again and then Retrain.

      Change Nest Mini's Hotword sensitivity:
      - Open your Google Home app.
      - Select your Nest Mini.
      - At the top right, tap the Settings (Gear) icon. - Then tap Audio.
      - Then tap "Hey Google" sensitivity and adjust the slider to make your Nest Mini more responsive to the Hotword.

If the issue still persists or if you've tried these steps before, we recommend that you reach out to our support specialists and let us help find a better resolution for you. Please contact us on our Google Help page here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp Nest

Pretty happy with my Google "home assistant" Nest Mini right now. Don't have any additional devices (thermostat, remote switches, etc.) but plan to get some. For now it's nice to have a voice-activated reference point for information, weather, traffic, music, and timer, etc. And it works great, I had some trouble connecting it in a second house, but did the reset thing and it worked fine. Looking forward to further exploration of its capabilities. Especially like the male voice option, something that Amazon's Echo (Alexa) does not have.

I received the 2nd Gen Nest Mini with another purchase and am happy that not all that much has changed from the first version. I am told the speaker is a bit different and it has a different proprietary power cable (not so happy about that) but I am unable to tell the difference too much. I mostly use my Sonos One for listening to music and the Nest Mini is mostly a backup device. Setup is really easy through the Google Home app and alltogether I was happy to receive this for free. I am not sure I would pay $50 which is the advertized price for this item and I think $20-30 would be more appropriate.
