    Speed to burn

    |
    Posted .

I spent a week researching mesh WiFi and reading every article I could find. Finally narrowed it down to the Orbi and the Google. I chose the Orbi for its dedicated tri-band. Installed it today and I’m very happy with the result. I had an Asus router that performed great until a month ago. Everything got super slow. But with this upgrade, I’ve got speed to burn. I’ve attached a photo and you can see where the install took place. From 25mbps to 180... Save yourself some time and head scratching and buy the Orbi

Not perfect, but still really good

This Orbi combo kit is a pretty good performer. Excellent for streaming and fast download speeds. Great for gaming too. Being able to run a wire to your device from the satellite orbis is an excellent feature, as it really helps gaming performance! Only reason I gave it four stars is because you have to find a sweet spot for the satellite orbis or else they might have problems staying connected to the main router Orbi, and that may not be in a location that you prefer in that room. But find that sweet spot and it won't disappoint. Parental control, phone app, and guest network features are really great to have!

    Poor Installation Instructions

    Posted .

I purchased a new 4K UHD smart television from Best Buy and had it installed by the Geek Squad. My connection to the TV was to be solely by wifi. My Comcast router signal was less than 25 mbps at the television and thus unable to support the required data flow. The installers recommended I purchase an Orbi router to boost my connection speeds and I immediately went back to Best Buy and purchased an Orbi AC2200 3 pack. I admit that I am not technically savvy, but the installation instructions are terrible. I downloaded the app on my smart phone and repeatedly went through the installation process. Finally, after two hours, I thought it was successfully installed. The app attempted to do a firmware update, but it failed. Then the app asked me if I wanted to change my password and I did. Immediately, the entire Orbi router lost it's connection and I was unable to get it to respond to my attempts. I had to manually reset the router and then it would respond, but I could not get it installed. At this point, I had wasted about three hours and was ready to return the product to Best Buy. However, at that time, one of the installers phoned me looking for a tool he had lost. I explained my problem and he offered to come back the next morning to install the router (for an additional fee.) I agreed, and they came the next morning to install it. It took them a couple of hours to get everything running. My house is single story and just over 4000 square feet and I bought a router to support a 6000 square foot house. At one point, I moved the satellite across the room and then two hours later, there was no internet connection in the room where the new TV was located. I had plenty of data speed, over 46 mbps, but no internet and it was working in the rest of the house. I called the Geek Squad and they said to try moving the satellite, so I moved it back to the original position and internet service was restored to that room. I went to the Netgear website while I was trying to install and instructions said old wifi must be turned off. The installers said that was bogus and it would require Comcast reset my security system if I did that. Today, I have both the old and new routers running wifi successfully. All in all, while I'm not great with new technology, I am an educated adult and it should not have been such a torture to simply install a router. Additional problems with the Orbi AC2200 3 pack: 1) product is visually intrusive (main is 8"x7"x3.5" & satellites are 7"x6"x2.5") 2) wall plugs are oversized and require too much distance for furniture placement when in use 3) not sure the emitted light signal is accurate (since I had no light signal when I lost my internet connection) Pros for the Orbi AC2200 3 pack: 1) greatly improved wifi speed throughout my house (download speed of 80 mbps at furthest distance from router & others avg 170 mbps) I would not recommend this product.

Kept telling me I had to set-up my system, even though I did it and it said complete. Then, it kept dropping the internet on EVERY CHANGE I MADE. NEVER had this experience with my Linksys. Called tech support, they took my telephone number, incase we got dropped. The line dropped and instead of calling me back, they closed the trouble ticket....TWICE. Brand new, out of the box and HORRIBLE experience with the reliability of the product and HORRIBLE customer support. Taking this back and buying a Linksys, it will be well worth it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Fantastic WiFi Coverage & Speeds

    |
    Posted .

This system is fantastic and a really excellent bargain when compared to similar offerings from Linksys, Ubiquiti, etc. for a mesh system. The setup process was a little frustrating (even as a fairly technical user) because it kept failing to detect that I was on the ORBI WiFi, and then for whatever reason the satellites would not sync. I went ahead and reset and started completely over and then everything went flawlessly. I was running Ubiquiti UAP-AC-PRO APs for about a year prior, and overall it was pretty good. After moving to a new (larger by about 1,000 sq. ft.) home, I kept having connections drop no matter how close I was to the AP. I had heard good things about the Orbi from co-workers/friends and with it on sale gave it a shot - I am super pleased with the coverage and speed. I have a 200/10 Cable internet connection, and anywhere across our 2,800 sq. ft. home I now get the full speeds everywhere! No more connection dropping, way more reliable speeds, and it's been relatively no fuss. I will say I have had some issues with trying to use CloudFlare or Google DNS, but that could be regional, as well since I was using them prior to moving to Boise, and to me it is not worth nitpicking if my ISP's DNS works faster. Overall a really solid product and does what it says it will - wired speeds off the satellites is stellar, etc. Definitely recommend trying, especially before sinking money in a more expensive mesh system.

    FANTASTIC!!! NEW WAY FOR WIFI

    |
    Posted .

I consider myself a WIFI expert and usually opt for the biggest and most expensive routers until my friend Michael at our local Best Buy store told me about Orbi and that he had set it up in his house. It literally took me 20-30 minutes to completely install and I kept my WIFI ID and password the same so I didn't have to change or reconnect any of our devices. We live in a single level 3,800 sq ft house and we now have full bars of WIFI throughout the entire house. Our security cameras work better and we get WIFI about 200-ft outside of the house. I could not be more happy and one key is to download the Orbi application before install. This is sooooo much better than extenders or line extenders. We also had a PC desktop which we were going to have to buy a WIFI antenna for the MOB and then suffer the extender signal degradation but we were able to put one of the satellites in that room and hardwire it directly. After a speed test we are getting a solid 115Mbs which is awesome! This system also handles 5 iPhone's, 4 laptops, 10 WIFI security cameras, 2 Xbox's, and our old $450 dollar router barely handled it. Cannot recommend this enough and this truly has revolutionized WIFI in our home!!!!

Great seamless coverage of our house

    |
    Posted .

We purchased this Orbi 3-piece system to replace our previous Netgear wifi routers in our house and it is working great! Our old system consisted of 2 wifi routers at opposite ends of the house and another connected via a wireless bridge to our shop garage. All those old routers used different network names (though one configured as the primary DHCP server). We had to reset one or all of the routers and the modem several times a week, as devices would stop maintaining a connection, and the handoff between routers had to be handled manually. No suitable adjustment of power levels between the routers gave us a good, long lasting result. No longer! With the Orbi mesh network installed, we have been running for a week with great wifi throughout the house and shop, and seamless handoff between the main router and satellite access points. The wired backhaul connection insures we get the fastest speeds from wifi connections to the satellites, too (wired backhaul is not an option on some other mesh wifi offerings, so this was an important feature for our purchase as we run an ethernet connection between the router and the satellites). We use the main router and one satellite to cover the house, and the remaining satellite was installed in the shop garage (connected via the wireless bridge). The whole house is on one network ID now, so there is no manipulating the connection on the device in order to keep a good signal. The setup was simple: connect and power up the main router, then connect the ethernet line to the satellite and turn it on - the system registers and activates the satellites automatically! Or, use the wifi connection only (this system uses a separate wireless channel for the backhaul, then) and it's all set.

    Great WiFi signal and strength

    Posted .

I have this system 4 stars because I had issues when setting up. I followed the directions exactly but it wouldn’t connect. I had to set up the system multiple times and reboot the modem several times as well before it finally stuck. During setup I tried contacting customer service and it was incredibly cumbersome to find a 1-800 #! I did register my product and tried going thru the Netgear site to contact customer service but I was stuck in a loop. Each time I clicked on a link to contact customer service I was brought back to the beginning. I’m not sure why contacting customer service is so difficult!! After setup, it did have issues staying connected. However the next day, the connection stuck and I have not been dropped so far. The signal strength is also awesome. We’ve noticed a huge difference and have not had any complaints about someone being dropped off the WiFi. Also, I’ve not had to reboot the system once! We’ve had the system hooked up for about 2 weeks now and so far so good. We have 3 TVs, 3 ipads, 3 phones and several computers and other devices hooked up. We previously had an Apple extreme airport and express to extend the WiFi. Our house is over 5200 sq ft. I hope this system will last us a while. We’ve been in our place for 4 years and 2 years in we had to replace our Apple. Now we’ve replaced our 2nd Apple with this and hoping for it to give us several good years of use.

I was hesitant to decommission the existing switches, routers, and extenders that have been deployed over many years, but rebooting devices was becoming a daily chore. Although our house is not that large, we have several devices that require hard-wired connections, and the WiFi signals were not consistently available everywhere. All of the issues have been resolved with the installation of the Netgear Orbi devices (AC2200 3-pack). The setup was as easy as they advertise. One caveat: if you choose to keep the same WiFi SSN name, be certain that the existing devices are all shutdown. To their credit, the Netgear app and instructions made it clear how to untangle the confusion if this is not done. We took advantage of the free on-site consulting that Best Buy suggested. The review of our requirements and the hardware available to service it was very helpful, and resulted in a different purchase (Orbi 3-pack vs. Orbi 2-pack) which has made our network much better. Speed and availability are better than they have ever been, and we have not had to touch the Orbi devices since we installed them. The Orbi devices are large compared to others, but they quickly disappeared behind other decorations. Not an issue. Our requirements included 5 hard-wired devices, and 10 - 12 WiFi devices including an Amazon Fire Cube (suggested by Best Buy consultant and much appreciated.) Applications include two active offices, two televisions, and 5 or more laptops, phones, and tablets, and one gamer :-) All are getting transparent access without issue. Worth the expense, and thank you Best Buy.

    high speed, great coverage

Living in a large older brick house with metal lathe and plaster walls, good wifi coverage has been hard to achieve. We had a good enough system that we had put together with a router and a couple of access points, but there were still dead spots, and there were awkward "hand offs" from one access point to another that sometimes required us to log off of one and onto another. The Orbi AC2200 with two satellites has solved those problems for us. We have more even coverage throughout the house, and devices never seem to struggle with diminishing signal as we move from room to room. The signal strength outside the house is noticeably stronger. Set up was easy, and monitoring and adjusting the system through the iPhone app is simple too. We have six wifi users in our house and approximately thirty devices, and everyone is glad that we installed the Orbi.

    Game changer for WiFI

    Posted .

I have had this package about 4 days now. After 20 years of being an AT&T customer I have recently quit them entirely. After dropping the Directv (wireless boxes) service with constant buffering issues I decided to upgrade my internet service in my home and cut the cord. I will note that my ISP is with Cox Communications. I previously had the 300MB (Ultimate) service with Cox and their provided "Panoramic WiFi" which is a modem/router combo. They boast it is "wall to wall" coverage in your home. That isn't the case in my personal experience. I was doing good to get a 2 bar signal 40 feet in front of my unit. I never had more than 4-5 devices connected at any given moment simultaneously and without fail, I would have some sort of buffering or connectivity issue. I finally had enough. I did a lot of online research and narrowed it down to two possible options. The Eero Mesh System or Netgear Orbi Mesh System. I went to my local Best Buy where the manager Kathy has helped me many times before. She recommended the Orbi based off her personal installation and experience with this system in her new home. It was also on sale for a lot less for the same amount of units than the comparable Eero. I told her that I was purchasing a new modem, WiFi mesh system and upgrading to the Cox Gigablast package. I purchased the Netgear Orbi Whole Home WiFi System (RBK43) and paired it with the Netgear CM1000 Docsis 3.1 cable modem (fastest on the market today). When I got home, I called Cox to register the new modem after first checking their website for certified modems that work well with their gigablast service. After a quick 5 minute call to register the modem, I disconnected the old Panoramic modem/router and installed the new modem and waited for a refresh signal to make sure it was received and I was online. I confirmed I was online with the cox specialist and I unpacked the Orbi system. The package contained the main router and 2 satellite units all which look identical cosmetically. I downloaded the Netgear Orbi app and signed into my Netgear account and the app walked me through step by step with the installation which was beyond easy. Basically, if you can read and follow simple steps, you are good to go. I connected my main router to the modem and power source via the ethernet provided cable and then I placed my two satellite units in my home where I wanted to blanket my WiFi. Plug them in and proceed. For me, having a 2 story home, I placed 1 unit in my master bedroom and the 2nd unit I placed upstairs in a hall closet that is about center of the upstairs. The router is in my living room which is centrally located downstairs. Within a couple minutes of placing and plugging the satellite units, I was up and running and the router automatically recognized and connected to them. I created my network renaming the SSID and connected my devices without any issues. After I had connected most of my devices, I did numerous speed test both with the Speed Test app and the utility tool within the Orbi app. I was blown away with how much faster my speeds were. Secondly, I was surprised that I now had full bars of WiFi on my iPhone in every room of my home plus my garage and places outside my home within about 100 feet of my front door. This unit claims it can handle a 6000sq ft home but I cannot attest to that. I am consistently getting over 550mb down and around 40mb up just about anywhere I go within my home. Granted, I am not getting the 1000mb Cox aspires to provide, but I understand I am sharing the bandwidth with my neighbors etc. All in all, I have to give this system 5 stars because of the performance, ease of installation, and convenience of the app. Since I now no longer have cable, I am purely streaming and while streaming on two tv's, using multiple phones and tablets simultaneously, I have yet to run into any significant buffering issues. A couple times in the span of the 4 days I have had this unit during peak evening hours, I have had a slight 3 second buffering interruption about 2-3 times but certainly nothing to cause me pause or concern with my purchase. I highly recommend this set up if you are looking to extend your WiFi performance, reliability, and range within your home. Now I am waiting for the Gig fiber to be available in my area this year and I can't wait to try this system out on fiber! GREAT PRODUCT!!!!

We purchased this Orbi unit when our WiFi router started giving spotty performance, and couldn’t be more pleased with it. It resolved traditionally poor performance in our upstairs bedrooms in the 2100 sq. ft. home, as well as faster connection speeds everywhere. Since our internet connection was 200MB/sec at the time, this unit easily gave us all our cable company could provide. When we bought a new single story home that was about 700 sq. ft. larger, we gave this unit to our son and purchased the next unit up from this one with similar results. Most WiFi devices we have are not capable of using all of the bandwidth our gigabit connection provides in our new home, but internet speed is not an issue anywhere - including outside (we have about .4 acres.) The Orbi is expensive compared to some units on the market, but in my opinion it is well worth the money. I have never regretted the purchase, and during this pandemic a reliable and fast internet connection has been a blessing with the streaming services we use.

When we upgraded to a bigger home the normal wireless router for our old 1500 sq ft home was not reaching very far in our new house. A friend told me he spent the money on a mesh system and never looked back. So i looked into them all and went with this one when it was on sale for $279. Since then it has been pretty much smooth sailing. The kids are constantly on youtube and netflix, but it always works. I only gave it 4 stars because one of the satelites can sometimes disconnect and need to be rebooted which takes literally 10 mins to come back up. Otherwise it works great. It has a filter that i pay extra for that is a pain at first to setup as you have to identify EVERY device and sort them out. Once you do, it just works. This was not and still is not the fastest mesh system, but it runs well for a household of tech people with ipads, phones, notebooks, connected TV's, and apple tv. The setup was really easy. Just plug into Frontier router in the pc port. Then everything else just plugged into the back of the Orbi router. Our house is rectangular shaped 3940 and this set reach's everywhere. If i have to get another mesh system it will be an orbi again for sure as it just works.

    Whole House Internet

    |
    Posted .

Wow, have 3 electronics in the living room, each with a different reception of the Internet. 1 TV and 2 computers. My computer got 17MPS, the TV got about 15 and the other computer about 80MPS. All within 30 feet of each other. Put the Netgear ORBI together in minutes and got all three to re-test with Speedtest by OOkla. My computer went from 17 to over 100MPS. Our cable Internet company guarantees 50MPS so for both computers to hit 100MPS was astonishing. The TV, since we dropped cable, actually runs with no dead time. We are running ROKU and YouTubeTV with absolutely no problems. My only sob story is 2 weeks later, for Thanksgiving, the price came down 70 dollars. Going to add Firestick, tomorrow and I don't miss cable prices. We are also running one of the satellites on the 2nd floor and for the first time ever, we have the Internet throughout the entire house!

    Great whole house WiFi

    |
    Posted .

After dealing with spotty WiFi signals in my house I decided to give this Orbi a try. OMG. What a difference it makes!!!!! We have a staircase in the dead center of our house which apparently acts like a lead box. The router is on one side and the TV’s are on the other side. In the room with the router we were getting speeds of 234 mbps. The TV’s on the other side of the staircase (about 20’ and 30’ away) the WiFi speeds were between 40 and 80 fluctuating. We installed the main Orbi unit next to the router and placed the smaller transmitters next to each TV. Set up was super easy using the app. Which scanned the barcode from your unit to start and also registers your device. I was up and running within 10 minutes. I ran another speed test on the 2 TV’s and now I’m getting 234 - 238 on each TV !!! Awesome. And what’s even better we now have WiFi all through our yard and at the neighbors house !! My husband can mow the grass with his earbuds in and not lose signal.. Super excited about this item!! We’ve FINALLY conquered our lead box staircase issue !!!!
