If you can find the money, this is probably the best all-around Nikon zoom lens you can buy for your DX DSLR. It is a solid lens and definitely beats the 18-55mm kit lens by every measure, but for the purposes of this review I'll be comparing it to the 18-200mm zoom lens, which I had used for quite a while as my go-to "covers all scenarios" lens.
The extra 2mm may not seem like much, but this lens definitely produces solid wide-angle shots. There is a little distortion on either end (noticeable barrel at 16mm and a little pincushion when zoomed out), but nothing that can’t be fixed easily in post-production (or even in-camera with some models). I was worried that 80mm wouldn’t be enough zoom after getting spoiled by my 18-200mm, but it’s actually worked out well and the 16-80mm hasn’t left my camera since I bought it.
Alternatively, you could pick up the Nikkor 16-85mm lens for less money, but with the 16-80mm you are paying for a much faster lens with a much better aperture range (a full stop faster for better results in low light) and incredible vibration reduction, making formerly impossible handheld shots a breeze.
Photos come out of the camera consistently clear, sharp, and beautiful. Do you need to buy this lens? No. Will you be thrilled that you did? Yes.

This is a great lens. I have this on my camera most of the time and has used it almost a much as all of my other lenses put together. It's light, versatile, great in low light, and sharp. It's a must have!

This 16-80mm Nikkor lens is the equivalent of 24-120mm on 35mm cameras, making it perfect for wide angle and everyday shooting. I use it with the D7200 and the combination of this great body and a high quality F2.8 lens is unbeatable. Vibration Reduction too!

Very pleased with this lens...definitely the upper end of the Nikon DX format offerings. Crystal clear images; the only downside being the f2.8-f4 aperture range - wish it could be f2.8 throughout, but I can work with that. the Nano-coating makes a noticeable difference as well.
