Customers are saying

Customers enjoy the SHIELD Android TV for its seamless performance, speedy processor, and ease of use. The device is also praised for its remote, streaming capabilities, and excellent picture quality, including fantastic upscaling and AI upscaling features. Some customers find the price to be high and would prefer more USB ports, RAM, and storage. However, many appreciate the smaller size and easy-to-use interface.

My living room TV has Android TV built in, and I hated it. Turns out that it was just the manufacturer's implementation of it that I hated, because when I got frustrated with just having a Chromecast on my bedroom TV that has no "smart" features whatsoever, I turned to the NVIDIA SHIELD to provide me with the streaming capabilities I was hoping to have in my bedroom. Installing the SHIELD is dead simple, even if you use a receiver as a pass through. Installing apps is handled like any other app store. The SHIELD has all the streaming apps I use, like Netflix, Hulu, PLEX, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, & more. And if I'm using another device, I can easily cast the screen of that device to the SHIELD to be able to share it. Having a microphone built into the remote to be able to issue voice commands is great and prevents having to frustratingly pick out each letter when trying to "type" with just the directional keys and enter button. I also love the easy portability of the SHIELD. Small enough to throw into my suitcase for trips, and easy to set up in a hotel room or Airbnb.

I have a Samsung Q90 and the Nvidia TV Shield streams to it flawlessly. I've used this fairly heavily and have not encountered any issues. There are no ads on the home menu. Any app that Google offers you can download. Switching between apps is quick. Kind of expensive, but you get what you pay for.

I had wanted to try the Shield for a long time, and when we knew we were going to be stuck at home for a long time, I figured it was a good time to try it out. For the first couple of weeks, I was disappointed. After watching TV for about 30-40min, the picture would just randomly black out for a couple of seconds, and the pick up again. I finally took it to another location (away from my house) and it was rock solid. So, it was something about the setup in my house. It turned out it was the HDMI port I was using. Now, it works perfect all them time. I have the original Fire TV 4K, and the Shield just blows it away! The picture is so much brighter, sharper, and has better colors. I had to switch back to the Fire TV when I was having the HDMI issues, and my daughter asked "What's wrong with the picture?" HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Ended up returning because of provider (xfinity) issues but the quality of picture and ease of use were outstanding. Just does not support XFinity streaming, which is an Xfinity issue, not an Nvidia issue. Would jump back on a heartbeat if it had support for what I needed

Wile is still the king of streaming boxes NVIDIA has certainly been sitting on its laurels. The upscaling is great video streaming is seamless. But due to its aging hardware there is little else it can do confidently other than acting as the best TV streaming box you can get right now. My primary frustrations with the NVIDIA shield are not with how well this device performs its primary function put more at missed potential of both the device itself and Android TV Google TV. In an ideal world this device was essentially allowing you to turn your television into a full Android device who is only limitations is the controller you plug into it. Don't get me wrong every other streaming stick is worse but most of them are not nearly as expensive and as long as you don't need a Cadillac experience do 70% as good a job often with better interfaces

Bought this as an upgrade to a Fire TV 3rd edition and absolutely love the capabilities. It does all the “non-major” streaming stuff better. If all you’re going to do is Netflix, Prime, or YouTube, save the money and get a FireStick or Roku. If you want to be able to play games, use emulators, and have access to a larger array of streaming opportunities then this is a must have. I bought this for the $149 and then got the price adjustment when they had it for one day @ $129, Best Buy takes care of its customers in that regard. The reason I stuck with this over the Pro version was the ability to play GameCube or Wii games via emulation wasn’t that important to me, I don’t run a Plex server, and I liked that this one used the microSD card that for some reason is now missing on the Pro. Overall, great product!

So far so good! My review is strictly based on using it as a streaming device. Haven’t used it to play any games. I have a Roku on every tv in my house. My Roku 3 had become a little sluggish in my theater room so I decided to give this a try. I was taken back by how fast apps open and how quickly you can bounce around from app to app. There was also a noticeable difference in picture quality from my Panasonic PT-AE300 on a 120” screen. Almost night and day actually. I don’t run ATMOS in my theater so I can’t speak to that and I also don’t use the included remote. The remote is built very nicely and the shape, although different, works! I’m considering switching out my Roku devices for these (especially if YouTube tv and Roku can’t come to an agreement). These are going to cost you a little more money but the quality justifies it, in my opinion.

The Shield TV is a very good player, especially if you play media from a local source, such as ripped movies and TV shows from your home PC. I recommend paying the additional cost for the Shield Pro, however. This version (often called the Tube), can get a little warm, and it has no USB ports. It also has less internal memory and cannot run 64 bit applications. If you're only watching Netflix, Prime Video, or YouTube, lower cost players might work just as well for you. But if you stream media from a local server, you cannot beat the Shield for playing lossless audio, almost every audio and video codec, and support for almost all kinds of captions. It doesn't do YouTube HDR, and doesn't do HLG. But that's about all of its limitations, other than what I mentioned above. With Gigabit Ethernet, it's among the few that can play ripped UHD movies well.

Great Android TV box but it would be nice to have a single extra USB port to plug in controllers since it's so gaming-centric. I'm not competitive so I don't mind playing some Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat streamed from my PC. I can't plug in my fighting stick. I'm sure if you want to do some racing or just have a favorite retro USB controller, you'll have the same complaint. Hardware is solid and I've never had an issue streaming 1080p. Playing h.265 stuff streamed from my home network is nice, too. Android TV is OK. It's a bit of a second-class Android citizen so you're missing a lot of apps or they stink compared to others. Sideloading is a pain but the Shield makes it easier by having a little file server.

Solid step up from Firestick 4K

Ive had my eye on this for about a year now, continuously adding and removing from my cart. Never went down in price but finally did for Black Friday (even though only $20). I initially had a Firestick 4K which I purchased because my 2015 Samsung 4K tv smart features were beginning to slow down considerably and was getting annoyed so decided to go external. Chromecasts also annoyed me and roku was too expensive when comparing to Firestick. I was, and still am a fan of the firestick 4k and its an excellent choice for budget 4k streaming device. Super simple and just worked. However, there was alot of content that was primarily in 1080p and not 4K and felt I was losing value from my tv (which still has a great picture). Thats when I came across reviews of this and its 4K Upscaling, so I knew this was what I was needing. Purchased this, got home and immediately plugged it in. Booted right on up and was able to add all of my apps with no problem at all. Signed into google which had all of my passwords saved for all of my streaming apps so didnt even have to manually input the login info for majority. Huge perk there. Decided to watch Mandalorian (which is already in 4k) and it of courses looked amazing. Went onto Hulu and watched some horror flick which def wasnt 4K but this thing did an excellent job upscaling to make little details pop much more than usual. Extremely happy with how this thing works. Only con I had, and it might of been my controller, was the bluetooth function. Tried 2 xbox controllers that would not sync at all. Finally tried my Elite Series 2 and it did after about 2-3 mins of searching. Not sure why the previous 2 newer controllers didnt work, they have synced to my phone via bluetooth no problem so I know its not the controller. Gaming on it worked, atleast for the android games. Had some issues with Geforce Now but thats because I dont have the worlds best internet and also wasnt a premium user. Nice perk to have and can see it being useful if I want to travel but of course dont want to lug around a PC or console. Much easier porting around this tube (plus get my own streaming services) than a big device. Overall im happy with the purchase as I would say im a heavy user and enjoy top of the line gadgets and this is by far the best streaming device ive used. $150 is extremely steep though and hard to justify for average or even some heavy users. I got at $130 and that's still steep for what it really is compared to other options on the market. I believe $100-120 is much more fair. If youre just into streaming content, I believe the Firestick 4k or new 4K Chromecast may be a better option, but if youre a heavy user that wants top of the line and also potential for gaming, this will be a great addition to your entertainment center.

In hindsight, I would have gone with a model that has a USB port so I could use a wired controller for retro gaming. Regardless, it still works great with my TV and Soundsystem and consolidates the remote functions even better than my harmony.

I upgraded to the Nvidia Shield TV from Mi box both Android boxes and have been very impressed with the performance. I have a Roku Ultra also which I have not used much after hooking up the Shield TV. I was very excited when Nvidia came out with this less expensive model. I have gone back and bought a second one for my basement tv because it has work so well. I should also note that I don't play any Android games I only stream from internet and record OTA channels from an antenna using the Shield TV so I would not have any use for the more expensive Nvidia Shield Pro.

The first Shield TV was the best Android TV box of all time, and in my opinion the best all-around streaming box. This version takes it to the next level by adding Dolby Vision capability along with a speed boost. Both are really noticeable improvements, and it costs less than before! I would recommend this to anyone.

Have been wanting to cut the cord for some time in favor of YouTube TV, but relying on Google Home/Assitant voice commands soley to channel surf never felt quite right. Enter Shield TV. Provides an intuitive interface and experience that feels more like traditional TV (I would argue even more so than some of the native Smart TV app interfaces/remote integrations). Very reliable. Works well with Google Home devices and Assistant voice commands are also a nice feature (e.g. searching and viewing content on screen via remote). Paired with our TV and sound bar quickly and easily. Can't recommend it enough. We actually now use the Shield TV more than any other TV in our house.

If you have a monitor that's Dolby Vision HDR ready, a sound bar or audio system that can handle Dolby ATMOS, this is a MUST have for high end premium app a/v streaming. Plus, the A.I. upscaling on video resolutions less than 4k are indeed awesome looking still. The quality parts shine in this hardware. Great price now for all this tech is the icing on the cake, my LG 65' E7P OLED looks great even with simple 720p sources. My only personal gripe is the micro sd card's location - it's so tight spaced next to the HDMI input... Hard to remove when you got "normal man" hands in this product's recessed end opening. Bottom line: Treat your inner Video/audio-phile self with this Nvidia product... you will love this lil device & it's overall performance.
