Customers value the Streaming 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray Player for its excellent picture quality, Dolby Vision performance, and upscaling capabilities. The device is also appreciated for its quiet operation and overall good performance. However, some customers find the button layout and user interface to be less than ideal, and the remote control and app selection could be improved.

There's a reason why this is always the 4K UHD player recommended by enthusiasts.
Plays every disc without any issues, amazing picture and sound quality, Dolby Vision included, extremely quiet.
Would like if the remote had at least some of the key buttons back lit, but that's the only quibble I have.

After weeks of researching, if you want auto detection of Dolby Vision by your 4k player then Panasonic ub820 is the only choice. All other 4k players have flaws...the x700 that dont auto detect DV......x800m2 is not that great and cost more than x700......not many manufacturers left in the 4k player market...the Ub820's optimizer feature make every HDR content better.....its simply the best 4k player in the current market.........man...I miss Oppo!!
Fyi....if you have a Samsung tv and dont have DV anyway then I highly recommend the ub420.....same optimizer....just no DV support....and much cheaper!!

Excellent picture (vivid, with contrast, "detail in darkness") and sound (very clean). A little slow to respond to control, and excess steps for routine functions, but performance makes up for these minor user interface issues.

When I couldn't get an Oppo 203, I was sad. After this disc player came out, I did my research, pulled the trigger, and have been so happy watching my movies.
Best feature is the DVR Enhancer. This Panasonic allows you to jack up the HDR to make those bright areas even brighter. It is truly amazing to these middle-aged eyes.
It is a great upconverter. All blurays look great. Some higher quality DVDs look just fine. 4k UHD discs obviously look awesome. It is a region free player, as I've popped in some Region B discs with zero issue.
I did get a hiccup on a couple new 4k UHD discs. Player stalled on startup. Unplugged it and then back in, and the disc started up fine.
The physical player build isn't as solid as others, but it'll do. I dont want to spend $1000.
I'm a Roku user, so I only needed a disc player. If you need everything in one for discs and streaming, then this Panasonic won't do. It can only stream Netflix and Prime fans no other mainstream apps. That said, Netflix looks WAY better through the Panasonic than my Roku Premiere.
I also run a nice soundbar and the direct feed from the Panasonic sounds awesome.
There are a gazillion other settings in this player. If you run a separate A/V receiver, I surely expect you to be able to find the settings to output to that.

Like many, I chose this 4K UHD blu-ray player because it's one of the highest-rated, most-versatile players out there right now. And while it does *meet* my expectations, it certainly does not surpass them. For example, the system menus and built-in Netflix (and other streaming) apps are pretty slow and clunky—I tend to just use the ones built-in to my TV instead. Additionally, the buttons on the top of the player (open/close, power, etc) do not always work as expected—for example, if I turn the player on, and it is still warming up/getting started, the open/close button sometimes is unresponsive. On this note, it also seems to take a minute or two for this player to turn on/off, which is fine but not what I expected for a top-of-the-line blu-ray player. Nevertheless, the player is very quiet, has excellent image quality, and has worked with every different type of disc I've ever tried to insert it in. If, like me, you are only interested in a really solid 4K blu-ray player—not any of the apps or special features—then you could probably save your money and get one of the more affordable options.

I’m taking a star off the review only because my first attempt at getting one didn’t go so smoothly: I went with an Open Box - Excellent condition ub820 at first. After it was delivered, I was only able to get one 4K playback use out of it before it ceased reading any 4K discs. I’m sure not all open box versions of this are subject to this issue, but it’s something to be aware of. I exchanged it the day after it was delivered and promptly ordered a brand new one for not much more than the open box price. That unit has had zero issues since I’ve hooked it up, handles 4K discs beautifully. Not having to turn Dolby Vision on and off is really nice, and audio output is exceptional (I would argue that I can hear noticeable differences in audio when compared to my ps5’s disc player and yes, I had atmos set up on the ps5 too). If you enjoy still watching and collecting physical media and if it’s within your budget to pick one up l, you won’t regret it.

I've only used this for a couple weeks, but it has worked flawlessly so far. I upgraded from a Sony x700, which would freeze on about 50% of the discs played on it. I am happy to report that this Panasonic player has not had any problems with my discs. Even the ones that froze on the Sony player work fine on the Panasonic.
The build quality seems solid. The output picture quality is great, and the overall functionality of the unit is implemented well, as expected for a player of this cost. The remote is only average, but it gets the job done. The other nice feature of this player is that it auto-detects dolby vision and enables it. This is something that was missing on the Sony x700, so I am happy about having that feature now.
I would definitely recommend this player - especially as an upgrade to the cheaper Sony models for people who are experience problems with those units.

Definitely a bit better quality video than my Xbox One X. Definitely better sound as I always had to mess with Xbox dropping my Atmos settings. This hooks directly into my Denon AVR-X2400.
Cons:
-Slow boot.
-Slooow Disc tray open/close
-UI is old (don’t care, only there to load a disc)
-Known issue with some 4K discs stutter/freezing for a few seconds. “Midway” is one of them. Two scenes in the same spot as everyone else online.
Overall very happy.

Awesome 4K Ultra HD Player. This unit does it all as you can tell by the description. Operates smoothly and flawlessly and quiet. I have put it through it's paces and it just keeps on keeping on. I have a Sony X-800 (bought at Best Buy) that I switch off with but feel that the Panasonic is a far better unit in all respects as this one also has Dolby Vision and Display. The Panasonic DP-UB420-K player is the same as this one for half the price, but this has Dolby Vision and the Display counter. If your TV does not support Dolby Vision and you don't care about the counter then the DP-UB420-K
is the unit for you. I plan to upgrade my TV in the near future to one that has Dolby Vision so I will be ready. This is a great unit and I am 100% satisfied and highly recommend. I gave it 5*****'s only because there aren't 6.....

Until the Panasonic DP-UB9000 comes out very soon, this is the best 4K Blu-ray player there is. Have the OPPO 203 and it does not compare with this UB820. The only drawback is the remote, the Netflix button is too close to the ones you use and this is NOT backlit. The 2yr old UB900 has top quality backlit remote and the new UB9000 does too. Otherwise, this is an awesome player that can do it all and has so many options for those that want to dial in the best picture. Video & Sound transfer is better than the OPPO 203.

My inability to snag a PS5 led me to find an alternative to start watching 4k movies on my LG CX tv. After doing a lot of research, I came to the conclusion that this 4k player is the best value you can get. Yes, it's more expensive that the budget models, but this thing does everything. Films using Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos are jaw dropping. It has two output ports and I use one HDMI cable for video into my tv and a 2nd HDMI cable into my sound system. The video quality is OUTSTANDING. Love this thing. The best settings kick on automatically. Easy to setup and use. No issues at all. Do yourselves a favor and invest in something better than the cheapest 4k player.

So far, so good. I went back and forth on which 4k player to get and this often came up in recommendations.
It's not an Oppo, but it doesn't have the same price tag. The upscaling is great for Blu Ray's, separate audio/video outputs is a nice option, supports both Dolby Vision, HDR and HDR+, and it doesn't skip/freeze on 100gb discs like some of the other players in this price range.
Very happy with this purchase.
Pro-Tip: look for open box options. I did and got this for $100ish off. The box was rough, but the player was perfect and unused.

The DP-UB820 is an awesome 4K Bluray player and has some great features. Both the Audio and Video from this unit are excellent. I have noticed that some 4K movies that I have played have frozen up randomly but I have not determined if it is the player or the disk itself that is to blame.
The network/Smart TV functionality and GUI is very rudimentary and clunky. But your not buying a 4K Bluray player for its apps like Netflix, YOUTUBE TV, etc..
A great feature is that this unit has an independant HDMI audio out. This is great if you have a 4K TV but an older Home Theater Receiver that is not 4K compatible. This feature lets you run an (HDMI 2.0a/b) cable to your 4K TV and run a second HDMI cable to your (non 4K) Home Theater Receiver for (5.1/7.1) audio.
The one feature that is missing is an HDMI input(s) on this unit. The Scaler is excellent on the DP-UB820 and it would be awesome if you could take advantage of it by having the option to input to the DP-UB820. Many people have a PS3 or other 1080P devices that would benefit from the DP-UB820's Scaler.
HDR(10) and Dolby Vision 4K movies look great and the sound is excellent thanks to its 192-kHz/32-bit 4-DAC. I would recommend this unit to anyone looking for a great 4K Bluray player that will also play DSD (5.6 MHz/2.8 MHz/11.2MHz) and ALAC music files and WAV/FLAC/MP3/AAC/WMA/AIFF formats.

Using this with a 65" LG 65C3PUA and a Klipsch/Denon Atmos surround setup, and it's better than going to the theater. This player will auto switch to Dolby Vision, while others either lack Dolby Vision or you have to manually select it over the regular UHD10. Fantastic sound and picture quality. Great audio decoding if you still have a CD collection or a USB thumbdrive full of music. Seperate audio and video outputs if you have the equipment to take advantage of that.

Panasonic picks up where Oppo left off, producing a high-quality 4K UHD Blu-ray player that’s poised to become the format’s new mid-priced standard bearer. Featuring stellar HCX processing, an HDR Optimizer that allows users to adjust HDR content to best suit their viewing environment, superior 4K Direct Chroma upscaling, a host of picture-tuning tools, top-notch HD 3D support, and excellent streaming capabilities, Panasonic’s DP-UB820 instantly becomes the clear choice for discriminating 4K and HD movie mavens. Oppo's demise left a void, but this impressive player more than fills it and comes Highly Recommended.

First of all this is my third Panasonic Blu-ray player.
I own the DMP-UB900 and the DMP-BDT500
The 820 is a good player but it could be better to be at the same level as OPPO level
Pros:
+ Easy set up
+ Great picture quality
+ Supports Dolby Vision
+ Great HDR support for projectors
+ 2nd HDMI port for audio only so you can connect it to a receiver that doesn't support 4K
+
Cons:
- Poor remote, too small, no back lighting
- No SACD support so no real universal player
- No THX the 900 had THX
- Poor build quality especially for the price and compared to OPPO 203
- Even Sony has better build quality!

Had been using an Xbox OneS for my 4k player the last few years but recently upgraded my display to a Sony panel that can run Dolby Vision and since Xbox doesn’t support Dolby Vision for movies I needed a better player. The UB820 is a great player that has all the options you will ever need and more. It’s processing and software definitely gives cleaner image than the Xbox and even seemed to improve on the audio side just a bit…I run a 5.1.2 Atmos speaker system and I noticed it especially in the bass response it seemed just a bit more defined and cleaned up. If you want the best player available for under $500 this is it.
