I made the decision to purchase this based on multiple tech reviews. It was definitely worth buying.Absolutely perfect for use with surface pro 3. Fast and efficient for those also looking to make backups of their movies.

The player is nice and compact. However, in order for you to play Blu-ray Discs on a Mac you have to buy a third party program. Pioneer doesn't sell the software to play Blu-ray Discs. Most programs run in the $30-$40 rang for a lifetime subscription.

Bought this to digitize my Blu Ray collection. I ended up digitizing my whole movie collection along with my sibling's. And it's still chugging along. I love it. It's very quiet and space efficient.

I did very little research on a portable burner prior to purchase, but I'm happy with the purchase I made. I felt that what I paid was a fair price, although the item was on sale. The sale price was one of the attractive reasons as to why I chose this product.

I bought this to use with my MacBook Pro. It works great out of the box for Vudu Disc to Digital, which is one of the primary reasons why I got it, and I have been able to successfully burn a few movies. It does not, however, work out of the box for playback on your Mac without purchasing additional software. I gave it 4 stars because, really, the drive ought to come with it's own software for playback compatibility. Other than that, it's great. I particularly I like that since the lid lifts up, you'll always be able to get your disc out.

Easy to set up and use. Windows recognized the device and installed with no issues. Great for writing large amounts of data for storage/backup and for additional video/audio storage. Runs quiet and has extra USB cable for external power supply if needed for extra power.

If you can get past that, and/or you have your own software to use for recording and 3D movie playback, then this is a very nice portable blu-ray drive.
It is very useful in the age of laptops with no optical drive.

I don’t burn optical disks, so I cannot comment on that aspect of the device, but it has played CDs, DVDs, and Blu-Rays without issue. On a Mac, at least, you will need a third-party Blu-Ray player app, but they are available for minimum cost.

I have owned several Blu-ray writer's, but this one is the best one. It was simple to set up (with Windows 10, plug and play) and my video editing software found it quickly and the production was simply outstanding. (Using PowerDirector 15)

I wasn't sure how durable this drive would be, but I've had it over a year and it's still working (knock on wood) great. Just be aware you need software to play Blu-rays along with the hardware to read it.

I was liiving with an old (2011) BD drive that could only read 2X, but I decided on a whim to upgrade to this Pioneer. Along with faster read speed, the Pioneer also consistently mounts the disc, which was a problem I was encountering on an increasingly regular basis with the old drive. I just didn't know if it was the fault of my 2009 iMac or the drive, but having something to compare ruled out my iMac. Now Blu-rays load every single time and spin up without delay.
I also would recommend downloading the Pioneer Drive Utility to change the read speed to its maximum setting, if you are doing data extraction from your discs. The default mode is set to "quiet," which maxes out at 2X. http://pioneer.jp/device_e/product-e/ibs/device_e/dev00001r_e.html#DriveUtility

We have older computers at work that needed to be upgraded to Windows 7 Pro from Windows XP. These computers had CD drives in them, not DVD drives. I bought this item to be able to go around to each computer to install Windows 7 Pro on new hard drives. The drive was recognized by the computer and I was able to run the installation to the new hard drives without any problem.
The only nits I was referring to are that the cable that comes with the unit is short, so you may want to have an extension cable available and the other nit is that you have to have the unit plugged in to open the drive to insert the DVD/CD. It is not mechanical. But as I said these are small nots I'm picking and I would buy this item again if I needed to.

My daughter at College needed a disc drive to hook up to her laptop quickly... I found this one and it worked perfectly. It gives her the flexibility to carry it wither to classes if she needs to and it was inexpensive for me - we are both happy.

This was a gift. They wanted an option to make DVD'S and Blue rays on their brand new IMAC. Works on the newest OS that Apple released. So far they haven't had any issues burned blue rays and dvd using finder without a problem.
