Slow, speed utility doesn't work
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Picked this up hoping to rip with MakeMKV. DVD copy speeds were around 2 MB/s. So it's slow for movie rips, probably because of the "Quiet Mode" feature that limits the RPM of the drive to reduce noise and vibration. I tried Pioneer's utility to disable the quiet mode, but it didn't recognize the drive under Windows 7 or 8.0. The utility worked fine under Mac 10.8, but the drive returned to it's slow/quiet mode after a reboot once it was connected back to my Windows 8 machine. After trying 2 different external drives from my local Best Buy I got an internal Pioneer BDR-209D from a competing online retailer because no internal drives were sold at my local store. It probably works fine for playing movies and burning data, but ripping is a no-go.

Good external Blu-Ray DVD
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a good, portable blu-ray player for those who either don't already have blu-ray capability on your computer or need DVD drive because your PC doesn't have one. It is a USB3 device and it does work faster than regular USB2 devices. It will work on a USB2 port.

Does what it should!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Set-up on my non-Apple laptop was easy. Just had to plug the little bugger in, and I was good to go. Haven't had any issues playing DVD's and Blu-Ray's either. Can't speak to the writing capabilities of this little guy though. Haven't needed to utilize that function as of yet.

Feels cheap, performs well though.
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Reads and writes BD-R XL media. I am probably one of the few people that have burned 100GB BDR LTH media, and confirmed the entire volume was readable. Laptops only seem to like the drive when it's on certain USB 3.0 ports even with the Y cable. It's a shame high capacity media is both rare and expensive as there is definitely a niche market for high capacity optical media.
