Slow drive

Plugged it in and it worked with no setup
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Exactly as advertised. I like it when you get what you expect. It has read all my media, CDs, DVDs and Blu-Rays. It has a little bit a noise when you are reading at full speed but I also expected that when you are whirling a disk around that fast. :-) I've written data to a DVD but have tried a Blu-Ray yet. Uses two usb ports on my laptop with the supplied cable. BTW, there is no software delivered with this optical drive.

An Okay CD-RW
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It’s slower than my LG RW but it works. And, you could say it’s more reliable at reading older discs. It’s also easier to keep clean.

Great external Blu-ray Drive
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this external drive so I could utilize a popular streaming service's disc-to-digital program. My computers did not have internal Blu-ray drives, so I decided to just get an external I could move around as needed. The drive installed with no drivers needed on my Windows 8.1 PC. It was able to read my Blu-rays and the online service had no problems scanning my discs so I could purchase the streaming versions for a low price. Now I can watch my movies on Blu-ray at home and stream them in HD while traveling.

Works fine, but...
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Function is perfect, but the dual USB hook up is lame, not even possible on my Mac Pro. Also , the proprietary cable is lame, why not a std USB????

Quality BD Drive
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I needed an external Blu-ray drive, and this is what Best Buy had in stock at my local store. I would have preferred a slot loading drive, but the top load works fine. The drive loads discs quickly and is relatively quiet during operation. The included USB 3.0 cable has two plugs on the computer end. I assume that's to provide extra power if necessary, but the device has worked for me with only one plugged in.

Good Drive with Some Problems
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This could be an excellent drive. When it's working, It does everything it is advertised to do and does it well. BUT -- as some have already noted, it doesn't come with any software. You could spend as much as $100 for a Blu Ray s/w package. I already had Nero, but there is definitely an incompatibility between the drive, Nero, and my Dell XPS 12 video card. The drive crashes or won't detect the Blu Ray disc. I've worked with Nero and they say it's my video card. Well, that's not the case. The drive works flawlessly with CyberLink. Still, Nero's pretty mainstream, so the drive won't work with it, and that's a problem. That problem could be Pioneer's, Nero's, or Dell's, but it is still a problem. That said, Nero works fine with DVDs. Just Blu-Rays are a problem. But that's the reason I bought a Blu Ray drive, so it's kind of a showstopper. The bigger problem is that there was no software with the drive. Which I don't understand because I purchased it's sibling, the BDR-XD05B and it came with the complete CyberLink suite. It works flawlessly with my Dell XPS 12. I have now seen this drive (the BDR-XD05S) is made for Apple computers. But it also says it works with Windows, so I bought it. Nowhere does Pioneer or Best Buy say "Apple Only", so one would assume that it would work fine. It didn't. As an aside, I gave it to my son who has a new Dell XPS 15 (Dec. 14) and he doesn't have any problems with it. He doesn't have Nero (bought Cyberlink) so I have no idea if the problem doesn't exist with the XPS 15 video card, etc. But so far it is working fine. There's one other issue. USB 3.0 Wi-Fi interference. When using the drive, my 100 mps + Wi-Fi signal goes to 5 - 10 mps. Unplug the drive, it goes back up. Can't prove it's the drive, but that's what it looks like to me. BTW, the same thing happens with the other Pioneer drive. So, you're not going to be surfing the net while burning a CD. Is that specific to my XPS 12 and somehow related to my Wi-Fi card? Don't have any idea. It's the only USB 3.0 laptop I have so I have nothing to compare it to. So, with the right software, the drive works well. Ironically, I would have probably given the drive 5 stars if they had included the same Cyberlink S/W package Pioneer included in the BDR-XD05B. I probably would never have even found out about the Nero incompatibility. But if you are going to force the consumer to go out an buy s/w to even use the hardware, you ought to test it with the major players on the market and try and resolve any incompatibilities. I definitely consider Dell and Nero major players, so given this, and the Wi-Fi interference, I wouldn't recommend it.
