Note Edge is a dinosaur in more than one way

Not doing anything today. Here's a long review. I was going to buy the Galaxy S6 Edge but read another review that the S6 Edge was not the same edge as the Note Edge edge. I wondered what that person was talking about, so I checked out the Note Edge to see what was different. They are completely different. The Note Edge has real functionality to the edge screen. You can access apps and put panels on there that are either custom made or have been released by an app maker. Panels are kinda like widgets, but they are for the edge screen instead. It is a bigger and more round screen than the S6 Edge which allows it to be more functional. The Galaxy S6 Edge use of the edge screen didn't seem as functional to me as the Note Edge. The S6 simply had I think 5 different colors that you can program to specific call groups. So if your phone is face down on a table, you can see who is calling based on what color is lighting up from the edge screen. That is all of the functionality that the Galaxy S6 Edge screen offers. Nothing else that I'm aware of. That alone wasn't worth $100 price increase over its sibling the Galaxy S6 in my opinion. But...the super pricy Note Edge and its' unique looking edge screen and leather back apparently was worth it to me. The Note Edge is a Note 4 phone with the edge screen. Much like the Galaxy S6 Edge curved edges, the Note Edge curved screen is simply a novelty feature. It doesn't really do anything special (but there is at least real functionality to it unlike the S6 Edge). Other than adding pretty much any app I've tried to the edge screen, you can customize a message that will appear on the edge screen while the phone is either locked or unlocked on the screen. I think that is kinda cool as you can use the stylus to draw what's gonna be on there. You can have it so a clock will appear on the edge of the screen while it's in stand by mode (the screen is off and it's all black). The clock is dim and not too bright which is nice if you're using it as a clock in a bedroom while sleeping. Interestingly, the clock can only be set for at most a 12 hour period as I think the phone will lose its battery too fast if it's always on. A lot of cases available for this phone have a strap going over the middle that could cover up the clock, just to keep in mind if case-shopping for this phone and wanting to use the clock feature. There are only a few panels that have been released by companies. There were supposed to be more but I'm thinking there won't be anymore made (see below as to why). The panels might be like CNN headline news scrolling along the edge screen or a notification panel showing you all your missed stuff. There are music panels displaying what's currently playing. You can add other panels like custom pictures or some specifically designed for the Note Edge panels that just simply are artistic and look cool on the edge screen but don't offer functionality. Almost everything else you can do on the edge screen you can do on any other smart phone device, except it's probably going to be on the bottom of the screen on the other device. I have read that this phone was a gimmick phone and that was always the case when it was in design. It was mainly made to show off that Samsung could make a curved screen. Based on what I've read and heard, there will not be another similar phone to this released annually or maybe ever again. There will not be a Note Edge 2 as far as I've heard. If there is, I'm disappointed I bought this without waiting. But what I've heard is the future of the curved screen is delegated to uselessness like that of the S6 Edge screen. That bums me out. That also explains why there will probably be very little invested into apps made for this specific phone with its unique edge screen. Also, cases from a lot of major companies like Otterbox don't seem to exist either for this phone cuz they don't want to invest in designing a case for a phone that will not be annual. But the cases that are out there are cheap cuz the case makers know there won't be another phone similar enough to this shape in the future, so they have to sell them now to people who already own one just to empty their stock. I have a case on the way I paid $4 for total with shipping that's got great reviews and is supposed to be good quality. But after dropping an arm on this phone, a $4 case or a $40 case really shouldn't matter. The Samsung designed case allows the edge screen to show itself off a little more, but that case is usually the priciest of all the cases. Some more bad now. I've read about the Note Edge having a battery that has a harder time keeping up with running 2 separate screens (the main screen and the edge screen) as opposed to just the 1 screen the Note 4 has. I have had my phone for a month or 2 now and haven't had serious problems with the battery, yet. (Just get Geek Squad protection on this expensive phone and that protection offers one free battery replacement. And batteries are like less than $10 bucks I think anyway on Amazon.) This isnt that bad, but sometimes my hand drifts over the edge screen and messes up my typing. I don't think that's fully cuz of the edge screen but maybe wouldn't happen as much if there were a sharper edge that my hand would notice like on a Note 4. But that happened on my other phones, too. So not a huge knock against this phone. This is good; If your hand is resting on the edge screen, it will not interfere with you using the main screen. That's prob one advantage to having it using 2 separate screens, touching one won't interfere with touching the other screen. This phone is huge. I believe it's actually considered a phablet, which is of course a phone and a tablet. Takes 2 hands or a large handed person to use easily without the fear of dropping it. They do add a couple of features to make it easier for one-handed use, like swiping left and then right quickly to make the entire screen smaller. Another bad thing is all the useless apps that are pre-installed on this phone. There are so many. You can't uninstall them and many of them are constantly asking to be updated which actually means to install and update. So I'm not a fan of all of the preinstalled apps. Not all the preinstalled apps are bad for everyone. The Note series phones have been known for some time to be great for business people. One preinstalled app on the Note Edge is Hancom Office 2014. That app is probably good for some business people which means no necessary further investment into sometimes expensive office related apps. The price of this phone is insane. But I wanted to support a unique design to encourage companies like Samsung and Apple to continue to create uniquely-designed items and release them to the public. (Apple has been bland for years, but they did start all of this with the first iPhone). All the smart phones do just about the same thing these days. Some have better speakers than others, some have better cameras than others, some have more pixels than others. But they all look close to the same and all do just about the same. They are so similar enough to each other that all of them have lost their pizazz. The Note Edge brought just a little of that pizazz back with its unique design and look. It is a dinosaur since it's huge and going extinct, but this beast is my favorite phone I've ever owned. If you want a cool looking phone that very few others will have, and/or if you want to support future designs of products being unique and still slightly innovative, then I recommend getting this phone.

We went in having an idea of what phones we were getting. I spoke with a very friendly and knowledgeable young lady who answered all of our questions and concerns. After having time to talk about our options, we ended up with this phone. The second rep who helped was also very friendly and took his time to make sure we were taken care of. Overall the phone is very similar to the S4, but the edge screen is pretty cool. I like that i can put my favorite apps and swipe through. I also like that I can keep up with my fantasy football app on this same screen - makes checking scores much simpler. The clarity of the screen and camera are great and it seems like the sound is much clearer while talking on the phone.

I've had smart phones, but this one is a genius, like me, so I recognize the cognitive superlative when it appears. The device was intuitively simple to tailor my preferences, and it can keep several apps open and interchangeable with a swipe. The screen is ultra-high resolution, which makes the camera's pictures astonishingly beautiful. The phone sounds good to my ear, and people can even make out what I say on this phone despite my raspy whisper of a voice. I'll shut up now so you can rush right out and get one of these genius phones for your very own. Tell'em DrBobby set you.

I've had and purchased many phones, but my Galaxy Not Edge has to be the best phone I've ever held in my hand and used. It's really great for meetings, because you can stop taking note pads with you. This phone has great camera, fantastic speakers, not to forget the clarity of calls and beats the living day lights out of any iPhone. Overall, I did have to get used to the size, since all of my previous phones were smaller. Great product Samsung!

The Samsung Note Edge is a great phone and is super fast. The edge screen is a really nice feature that I use often to get to my most used apps. There are a few glitches with the software that I find annoying. Every time the system updates is seems to reset my network settings and I have to go back into the roaming settings and turn on roaming and turn off the alerts. There is also a notification sound that keeps playing and I cannot figure out what it is because there are no notifications when I check the screen. Other than those glitches the phone is awesome, has great battery life and is extremely fast.

I'm totally utterly in LOVE with this phone. The EDGE is actually an Edge that I can use. I can add my favorite apps to it for quick access. I can play/pause/ skip music from it. View the weather, stocks, notifications. Like I just LOVE IT. The battery on this phone is just as great as expected for a Note. The camera is pretty awesome too. So glad that i got this instead of the regular Note. Plus the Note Edge just LOOKS SO GOOD! !

This is by far the best smart phone I've ever purchased. I actually even like the edge screen. I've gotten used to using it and it also helped clear out a lot of clutter on my main screen. It takes great pictures for being a cell phone, sound quality for music is pretty decent, but that would be expected. Sound quality is really good. Processing speeds are fast.

I like the features and the speed, my only two complaints are that it freezes sometimes while making a call (have to turn phone off and on to unfreeze) and that the caller ID scrolls down the 'edge' instead of across the front which makes it tough to see (small print).

This item is for you...if it is your first Samsung Galaxy Note. You wilI be amazed. I have had 2, 3, 4, and Edge. I went from the Edge to the 4. I decided that I did not like the Edge after all, because there are not enough covers for it (#1). And there are not enough screen protectors out there for it (#2). Also, the screen protectors that have been provided for you to choose from are not designed to go all the way to the edge to protect the whole screen (#3). So...then, one has to ask, what is the point of buying a phone that could easily be damaged??? I answered my own question, after researching and trying to find covers that I thought would satisfy me having an Edge, I was not satisfied. So, I went and got the Note 4, instead. One other thing that sucks...if you are with Sprint, you will be on a network called Sprint Spark. Which you are not told when purchasing either Note 4 or Edge. You will not be able to multi-task as you normally would. If you do not care about multi-tasking while you are on your phone, then, you should be fine. I care...I could not get the idea of having to hang up with someone because I need to use my internet. That takes me back to 1984 or something. Sprint needs to fix there network, if they are going to roll out a new network for their new phones. And after researching this situation, and learning that there is no solution, it did not make sense to stay with Sprint. Sprint Spark, also, did not have clear, with less dropped calls service, as they presented. If anything, my service was worst. So, I left and went to T-Mobile. It made sense. And it made sense to own the Note 4, instead of the Edge.

This model introduced the curved edge screen to Samsung Phablets and has a nice touch to it. It's definitely a faster and more efficiently operating device over and beyond my son's previous Galaxy Note 2. I just wish the curved Edge Screen wasn't as big an issue to apply a screen protector over early on but we eventually resolved that issue.
