You don't NEED this SSD for external storage. In fact, I unplugged my 4TB external HDD from my Xbox One X and plugged it right into the Series X with no formatting or anything.
The games were all there but must be transferred to internal storage, or this SSD to play. Transfer speed between internal and this card are very fast. Probably 20x's faster than the transfer from the 7200 rpm 4TB external.
This card basically acts like an extension of the internal drive.
Just want to be clear though, you do NOT need this to store games. You can transfer from an external HDD to internal pretty quickly. Much faster than downloading the game again. Even transfer between this SSD and the external is speedy. Think of it like you're just adding another TB of storage to the internal drive. But again, not required for game atorage. My Series X shows all 3 of my storages (internal, SSD, and 4TB External).

this is a must buy for anyone with a series console. The added storage is so nice, I was sick of only having 3-5 games on my internal and having to constantly switch them out. This thing made it so much easier. Also no install time or configuring. Pop it in, say yes to being used only on that console and youre ready to go

Pretty good item. No extra wires or anything like that, slides easily into your mini fridge and is very fast storage which you can see in the load times of games and such. Kinda pricey but ultimately what you would expect for any proprietary accessories.

I love having extra space and it reminds me of the memory card days. I do feel like with the amount of third party storage devices available now days it could be cheaper.

The SSD's are great! I do think they are priced a little to high. The price of the 1TB should be $99.99 and the 2TB should be $179.99. Having the 1TB priced at $149.99 is insane. However, if you are willing to pay the price you won't be disappointed in the performance. I got mine well under the MSRP of $149.99.

I know the price isn't ideal but its so worth getting, especially with the Xbox Series S it's a must have. It works just like an internal for the Series S and X.

I love this freaking expansion card. Yes it may be slightly pricey but I have about 40 games installed to my xbox with almost 800 gigs to spare. And all you have to do is insert the thing into your Xbox. Worth the price even though its not the greatest looking price tag.

It’s great. It does the job with giving more storage but it is very expensive for what it is in my opinion. If you have a Xbox series s/x you can’t use just an external drive it has to be the expansion card.

Is this expensive than a regular external HD or SSD? Most definitely. There are reasons why it is more expensive and reasons why you might need it.
Speed
Microsoft wants to ensure that games made for Series X|S played on the Series X|S meet certain speed and quality expectations. A standard external SSD or HD are just not fast enough.
Space
The newest generation of consoles come with up to 1TB internal drives and a good portion of that is taken up by system files and reserved space. Modern games can take up to 100GB or more. That means you might be only able to have 5-10 games on the internal drive ready to be played at any time. Putting them on an approved Seagate storage means more X|S games can be installed at one time.
Regular external storage uses
Previous generation games (those not designated as being made for X|S) can be played on cheaper regular external storage. You can also move installed games to a regular external drive for storage to clear space on your internal drive. Those games can then be moved back to the internal or Seagate storage the next time you want to play them.
