I have a surround sound system that includes a soundbar, woofer, and two rears. I was a little nervous about how easy this would be set up since I had an AV specialist set it up the first time. Very easy. Everything you plug in can be controlled by the TV remote. Great sound!

How In the World...

I grew up reading my dad's Stereophile subscription full of reviews my dad nor I could afford. Now at night when I need my brain to chill and not work, it's music time - and I read reviews, research, learn...
How in the WORLD is no one talking about this receiver? How is no one reviewing this? It's silent out there, and this is crazy bc Best Buy has been getting rid of their stock - why wouldn't they, no one's talking about them, they probably aren't selling, even though Sony's budget receiver out right now IS getting huge reviews and What HIFI gave it five stars and (I believe) their Product of the Year award. I just lived comfortably for four years with a top-of-the-food-chain Marantz receiver. The whole time I sat there with it, I liked it...it was good. But I remember an Onkyo 875 I had years ago that was head and shoulders above it in how it MOVED me. Because I don't care what audiophiles say - I am an audiophile and I am working and have kids and will never have the funds to drop down on two systems. So it has to be a receiver with preouts to a two channel stereo amp. Kids get surround on Pixar and I get my two-channel.
Then last Feb I was given some best buy gift cards. I love Best Buy - love it, love the Magnolia partnership, hope it doesn't ever stop. WAs heading in to grab a Yamaha receiver. Saw this Sony. Went all over the web. But no one ever spoke about this Sony receiver. I'm a total open box troll, and the Sony there was an open box and was $1600 marked off list. So I got this thing as an open box and the yamaha, took em home, and hooked up my system. Demo'd the Yamaha and it was solid. A bit harsh but solid - and the hardness would probably fade in time.
Then the Sony. My vision was eclipsed by the sticker price, so I didn't realize when I grabbed it that it had no phono preamp - terrible - and then I realized, "No headphone jack?! Johnny, you are the worst shopper ever..." and truth be told, I just wasn't paying attention. There was no doubt this sucker was heading back. I wasn't even going to demo it, and my wife said, "NOPE...hook it up."
I did. Folks. This receiver DESTROYS the Marantz. And it is so gutsy, classy, articulate, passionate, beautiful, freaking musical....I couldn't believe how it - a receiver - images, who wildly transparent it is, and never harsh. I forgot about the phono preamp (I'll pay for one myself) and the headphone amp (been wanting an excuse to buy one) because this thing is DOPE. It is a Receiver built for music which slays movies. That's it.
Negative number three - no App Store remote. Well, instead, you push the PING button on the front and it puts up a number you type into your phone's browser window, and BOOM...you have the custom installer's interface tied in to your amp over the network, and there's a remote on that sucker which is just as good as any app.
It's only weakness, in my opinion, is actually kind of a smart weakness. On high-level dynamic passages - passages where I have the sucker turned up and the base is kicking and it's just overwhelming, the very, very sub-bass will kind of back up just a bit and let the low and mid bass, as well as midrange, shine. I use Monitor Audio Silver 8s. They sing on this puppy. Bass region in busy passages may commit some sins of omission.
But that's it. I love this thing. I haven't written a review in years. If you see an open box one in best buy, sucker, you better grab it. Just do it.
