The sensor in the RX100 is the same 1" format that Nikon uses in its 1-System. It is considerably smaller than those used in most interchangeable lens cameras but it significantly larger than those used in most enthusiast compacts. Conclusion - Pros Excellent image quality and solid ISO performance Class-leading movie features and quality A good degree of customization puts your favorite settings at your fingertips Fast operation, including focus and Raw capture Flexible lens range (though a brighter zoom would have been nice) Excellent range of additional features (sweep panorama and auto HDR in particular) Good battery life for this class of camera USB-charging (with fast charger) makes it easy to travel light Conclusion - Cons Clickless control dial contributes to vague and unengaging shooting experience Flash metering is unpredictable Lack of ND filter can limit the ability to use wide apertures Screen hard to see in direct sunshine, despite WhiteMagic technology No official option to fit filters onto the lens (third-party glue-on adapters are available) In-camera raw conversion would add flexibility Playback confusingly separated into stills, MP4 and AVCHD sections Lag when trying to zoom in playback mode is irksome USB-only charging makes it awkward to use a spare battery

love this camera. Excellent photo and video. Works great alone side my HX90V. I use the RX100 for low light photography, and the HX90V for the long zoom reach. I know have the RX10, A6000 with the SEL35F18 as a tandem. What I really like about the RX100, is the size and photo quality of this little camera. I find myself using it more than the others. I still think its the best point and shoot camera to buy under $500.00 Photo just to show that I own the cameras.

This is a great camera. I'm a novice so it was a little confusing at first but then I realized for every option or feature you can hit the ? button and it explains what the function option means so all the options and settings are not as confusing or scary. It took me a few hours to understand the basics because I ? every option vs trying to study manual. It also has a way to save favorite option setting choices to scroll through that you might use more often. It is great in low light, sunny, panoramic, foggy all settings. Indoors at night in low light like a bar scene I don't even need a flash in fact I haven't even used the flash yet. Megapixels are great. Every shot comes out great. Pictures included are hand held shots no tripod because I don't have one yet. Zoom feature is really great also. The defocused background can get a little confusing but you can widen the area so it focuses more of the picture and if you zoom it tends to pick up the background more like in my sunset pic with tree branch hanging down in front of me, the sunset came in clearer which is what I wanted. Love Love Love this camera. Click on the photo tiles below, the tiles look blurry but not the shot when you open it ;)

A Great Performer in a Small Body

This camera has a body not much larger than my Canon S110 or Nikon 1 S1 but can provide much better images than any of them even though the S1 also has an 1 inch sensor. I bought it from BB as an open box item with a great price that I couldn't resist. Its small form factor includes a great sensor and a super sharp Carl Zeiss zoom lens that allow you to take amazing pictures that could rival those taken by large sensors such as M43 or even APS-C in good light. Although it's now almost two generations old after the RX100 MkIII came out, you won't regret buying it especially if you could find one with a great price.

Excellent camera for beginning or advance. A bit heavy for a point an shot but worth the weight. At first some time will be needed to understand the menu and camera settings could be confusing. Control Ring is great for manual focus and a must for that one of a kind photo. Color is great and speed and camera reaction is fantastic for a point and shot. I have been taken 35mm since the 1960's and have had many cameras. I now have a Sony a200 . however with 15 grand kids i needed something i could carry around in my pocket. Have used other point and shoot cameras but nothing could freeze kids fast enough or could take one picture after another fast ,until i purchased the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100. I must admit it took me about 3 months to decided because of the price and not knowing if it would do what i expected of the camera. When I seen on Best-buy wed site and open-box in excellent condition for a price i could live with i decided to purchased(and with a return policy that was 15 days) i would see if the camera could do what i wanted it to and it did... Cons Price .. A bit weighty for a point an shot, Does not use AA batteries Flash does get in the way of holding camera when it pops up(But does give good coverage) No view finder Screen a bit hard to view in bright light . Overall an excellent point an shot for fast kids and fast movement. i Purchased the extra metal hand grip and screen saver overlay. from Amazon ..you will not be disappointed. The hand grip will make holding the camera a lot easier and safer. Also your fingers will not get in the way of the flash coming up.

    This Camera Is Great

I got this and though a little dissapointed with the instructions and how to use documents on camera itself. I have you tubed info and googled info and called Sony tech and even they couldn't figure out how to put a micro sd card in it but it says it takes it. Other than that hog wash, once I got the basics of the camera and figured out when the dial is set to SCN to turn the ring on the lens housing to switch to different modes, I loved it, I was finally able to do the Macro shots I wanted where Auto wouldn't do them. The images are beautiful and this camera is amazing for a point and shoot. I'm not impressed with blown up images though, actually kind of disappointed with that. I don't like you can't crop on the camera itself but it does allow you to zoom on an already taken picture for some reason? Sony will refer you to get Play Memories for free but I had a bunch of pictures and my comp blows, so it just kept loading and I could never access anything, but they said I could crop with that program. Other than the negatives I've stated it's small, it shoots quick if want to take a bunch of pictures one after the other, clear zoom is nice, great auto focus if set in the right modes, takes beautiful color pictures and fit's in a case in your jacket pocket. I advise the wrist strap to be used, it's a please drop me I'm so hard to hold onto item. P.S. You won't use the flash much, it just washes out most photo's making them lame.

Like most of you I have owned many point and shoot cameras in the past. If you want an excellent mini DSLR camera you can take with you anywhere look no further. You will not be disappointed. The bigger sensor makes full use of it's MP rating and for those who own a bigger APSC camera it's got all of the big camera functionality you're accustomed to. It's low light capabilities are great and 1080p video if needed. It's pricey but you get a lot for what you pay for. Not my only camera as I also own the Sony A58 but I do use this a lot more often for its versatility and ultimately great picture taking capabilities. It won't disappoint and it's one of those rare purchases you will have that is truly worthwhile so bite the bullet already! And oh btw checkout BB open box I got it there for much less that retail price. Hope this helps!

This camera is a great option for those who want near professional quality photos. It takes great macro shots as well as portrait and landscape photos. The automatic settings do great for everyday shots without having to tinker with settings. When I have a complex shot, the manual controls allow me to take great photos in low light conditions or when focus needs to be honed in to capture the picture. The photo quality is amazing. The 20 MP image allows me to enlarge and crop the photo without pixelating. This is a great camera for the learning photographer who wants professional quality control without having to pay for a DSLR and high-end equipment. The battery life is incredible. I can take 200-300 photos before having to recharge.

This Sony camera takes fantastic pictures... very clear, very sharp. The camera is very small in size as well which makes it easy to take with you on the run, while biking/hiking/camping/etc. My only issue with this camera is the weird flash that pops up like a Jack-in-the-box... it sits atop the end of an extension from the camera body. The flash works well and I'm sure there's a reason to extend it from the body like it is but the mechanism seems very fragile and would break easily. Otherwise, the camera is great and I would recommend it. If it had a hot-shoe for external flashes, it would be perfect.

I was going to buy one of the newer versions of this camera, but after looking at the prices, this camera is hard to beat for a general point and shoot. It surpasses other point and shoots with lots of near DSLR functionality, while maintaining a small and portable form factor. Decent battery life, sharp lens, and easy to use. It doesn't get much better.

Bought this camera a month ago for a European trip. Best decision ever! Not only was the 20 megapixel quality outstanding, but the camera performs like a big, cumbersome camera but is 1/4 the size. I saw chumps on my tour lugging their giant cameras around and swapping lens, while I'm just shooting pictures left and right. Fast focus and vibrant photos. They were jealous and were asking me what kind of camera it was. Probably the smartest purchase I have made in a while.

Sony RX100 - Great general use camera

As a long-time Sony/Zeiss user (Back in the DSC-S50 days of 1999), this camera rocks with the T* Zeiss lens. The overall quality, fit and finish is excellent and expected of a made in Japan Sony product. The menu is easy to use and follow and setup is easy. I would highly recommend this camera to anyone as a backup to your DSLR or as a standalone general use camera.

We've got a great Nikon DSLR with all the attachments that we use on vacation. It takes incredible pictures but it's no fun lugging it around. That's why I chose the Sony RX100. My shots are ALMOST as good as the DSLR in an ALMOST pocketable camera. It's easy to slip into a bag or purse and if you don't feel like messing around with settings you can leave it on auto and still get better shots than you'd get on your smartphone or a lesser compact. I'm very satisfied with the RX100. The Nikon will be staying home on our next trip.

RX 100 is a great balance between portability and high image quality. It can fit into my pocket easily. On the matter of image quality, it is worth recommending. The Carl Zeiss lens and the CMOS with 20.2 megapixels give great details for photos when magnified. The 1-inch CMOS makes the ISO of 800 (or even 1600 sometimes) highly useable; the maximum aperture of 1.8 gives bokeh effects. Also, the handling of this camera is semi-professional. I can adjust the parameters like aperture, shutter speed and exposure easily with the "fn" button. When it's too dark to use the autofocus, I can use the focus ring, which is around the lens, to take photos, to focus manually. Though Sony RX 100 cannot replace DSLRs, its high image quality and great portability make it a great choice as the second camera for those who want high-quality photos without carrying heavy equipments, including DSLR camera bodies and lenses.

Got this camera to supplement my DSLR just before we went to Disneyworld. I read the reviews here and on dpreview and found that this camera, while not the cheapest, was compact but did not sacrifice image quality. Out of the box I had no problems since I am familiar with the Sony menu style. Took amazing pics at Disneyworld and fit easily in a pocket or purse. Very good low light sensitivity. Christmas lights at Hollywood studios came out well. Good battery life. The popped-up flash can be a bit tricky to push back into the body, but once you get used to it all fits back together well. It would also be nice if there were a bit of rubberized finish to help with grip, but overall it is a giant featured camera fit into a really small package.
