This is an amazing receiver for the money, especially if you can get one open-box (I did). It cannot do more than a 5.1.2 Atmos setup but is forward compatible with most major audio formats including IMAX Enhanced and delivers a surprising punch when paired with stand alone wired speakers. Integrates seamlessly with newer Sony TVs for great home theatre experience.
Hi 22islander, Awesome! We are so glad to hear that you are enjoying your new STRAN1000! Thank you so much for choosing Sony! -Carl

I think this receiver is a great receiver. The sound and clarity is great. However, there is a problem with the software. The receiver cuts off and on randomly. There is a period of 3-4 seconds of blackness and sound. If you look online this seems to be a common issue with this receiver. However the sound is great and it clears the picture or upgrades the picture very well.
Hi Dojo45, We're glad that you like the sound and clarity. Sony takes into consideration all feedback to improve the performance and quality of our products and services. We're always looking to make Sony better. With regard to the issue you've encountered, please email us at [email protected] with the following details:

This Sony STR AN1000 receiver is an excellent choice, especially for those with 8K needs and a requirement for dual 120hz HDMI ports, which is particularly beneficial if you have a TV with limited ports like the Sony Bravia.
I use it with my Sony Bravia OLED, and it integrates seamlessly, allowing me to control my home theater setup directly with the Sony TV remote. After connecting this receiver, I noticed new quick menu options on my Sony TV, such as sound field and options to toggle 360 spatial audio.
For Sony Bravia TV owners, this receiver is the ideal complement. However, its merits extend beyond just pairing with Sony TVs. Its performance and audio quality are outstanding for movies and other video content, regardless of your TV brand.
My setup includes Sony speakers configured for Atmos, front left/right, a subwoofer, and wireless rear speakers. The auto-calibration feature is impressively precise, a testament to Sony's engineering. The 360 spatial audio, in my experience, even surpasses Dolby Atmos, creating an incredibly immersive sound environment.
However, the receiver falls short when it comes to playing music. Compared to my previous Pioneer receiver, which had the MCACC calibration function, music playback sounds somewhat flat. Despite trying various calibration settings, I can't seem to activate the subwoofer for music or 2-channel stereo, as it only kicks in for multi-channel modes. The custom preset settings allow adjustments for every speaker except the subwoofer, which is a puzzling omission. I hope a future firmware update might address this.
My speaker setup is a 5.1.2 configuration, including the subwoofer. For now, I find myself using my old Pioneer receiver for playing music from my turntable, while the Sony receiver is relegated to video content. It's disappointing that Sony didn't give the same attention to the music playback capabilities as they did to other features.

Works perfectly, Amazing upgrade to Sony STRDH590 I had previously. I also purchased Sony - SA-SW5 300W Wireless Subwoofer and Sony - SA-RS3S Wireless Rear Speakers that pair effortlessly with this receiver. I simply had them plugged in and turn them on and the AN1000 found and calibrated them for me.
The rest of the speakers I have are the Polk audio monitor series center, tower, and height speakers. I really think this is a sweet spot in terms of price for sound and performance over many systems.
I previously had the Bose 900 soundbar paired with subwoofer and surround speakers.
The Sony system is far and away a better sounding system with the ability for me to have my Apple TV, PS5 and HD disk player attached without need for separate switching device.
The sound is so good that I had to close my eyes and look away the first few times watching one Dolby Atmos scene with the camera flying fast and diving over a waterfall. I felt like I was there, and my stomach would quickly drop just like on a roller coaster.
Something else that is of extreme importance to me is being able to clearly hear dialog which this does an amazing job with. I find that I can comfortably watch programs at 10 volume or 30 volume and still hear clearly.
I did watch a few Youtube tutorials on how to position your center channel properly to achieve the best vocals and that probably has something to do with it as well. I highly recommend everyone with a center channel to search and follow one of those tutorials.

This replaced my decade old Denon X-4000, my denon did it’s job but slowly began having more audio issues, tinny like sounds on dialogue and constant buzzing from the box. I “downgraded” to the sony, much less power, no preamps. That being said my theater space these days is rather small 8.5x15 with light acoustic treatments and easy to drive speakers.
I really dont need that much power. The sony is a good deal, the 360 sound mapping is quite amazing. I had my eye on Dirac but the costs for dirac licenses and the fact my space is not ideal to begin with I decided to try out the sony with sound mapping. My soundstage has never sounded better. I disabled bluetooth standy mode because it seems to attribute to a loud thud on start up sound. That may be normal but it just didn’t sound great, turning that off has removed that loud start up. The app connectivity is nice as I have my receiver in an av closet, however it needs repairing often for some reason. The remote everyone seems to hate, it gets the job done but I primarily rely on the apple tv remote so it’s not a big concern.
Independent outs for sub would have been nice but not really a huge concern with mini dsp options.
For my tastes I definitely enjoy the sound this puts out for movies and music.

Surround sound is more than about what formats, but also quality of life as well. Supporting DTSX and Atmos along with having Spotify support and USB music connection, audio has many options to go through. WIth HDMI 2.1 support, both my PS5 and Series X can be connected to my TV as well through the receiver. All the bases I can think of are taken care of with all the HMDI inputs and options.
It brings us great joy to hear that you found it very easy to set up and that it's a perfect fit for your love of karaoke! The STR-AN1000 receiver is designed to offer flexible setup options, making it simple to expand your system as your needs grow. Adding more speakers is a great way to create an even more immersive audio experience, perfect for enjoying music and karaoke sessions.
Best regards, -Fred

I owned the Sony 1080 since 2017 and was looking to upgrade. This new unit is an improvement across the board. Dialogue is clearer and the separation between channels is much more distinct. The 360 audio features feel a little gimmicky, but are ok for certain things. My turntable using an external amp sounds much improved with this unit. The ability to “lift the dialogue” only works with ceiling mounted atmos height speakers, so I haven’t had a chance to test that.
Hi KazPro, congratulations on your upgrade! It's truly wonderful to know you're enjoying your new Sony - STR-AN1000 and its clearer dialogue and separation between channels. With support for Dolby Atmos, Dolby Speaker Virtualization, DTS:X, and DTS Virtual: X this AV Receiver delivers an object based surround sound experience. Thank you for choosing Sony and enjoy your new setup! Best regards, -Dominick

Perfect! Replaced the sdr790 or something It had the 4k the atmos the 7.1 but it would not allow PS5 passthrough. That sucked. So I had to run HDMI and optical. Well doing this caused the receiver to constantly switch inputs cause it kept reading multiple inputs so i constantly had to hit the sound source on remote at least 3-4 times. Well after a year of that i was done. So I did research and found the An1000 to handle what i had. Now the PS5 works and only need to run HDMI cable now. No more constant source picking. And it sounds much better than the sony model below it. Guess thats the difference between $400 and $800. Sometimes going cheap is just fine, sometimes it costs you more in the long run.
You made the right choice upgrading to the STRAN1000! We're thrilled that you are enjoying the sound quality of the receiver and how it works well with the PS5. Thank you for choosing Sony!

Loving my new Sony receiver. Bought open box “no remote..no manual”. Still working on tuning this thing and software. Could be a 5/5 lol. Ive read that some people are having trouble with remote after update. I can attest and give two thumbs up to the “all for one remote” sold at best buy. It does everything receiver remote would do.

For the value, it a great starter hometheather receiver performs great. The highlight for me it has LDAC and Dolby Features bringing a much improve picture and audio experience, no intergrarion of spotify or anything line so.
Glad you're enjoying the upgrade! Just to clarify, you can actually stream Spotify directly.
While there isn't an on-screen app menu, the STR-AN1000 has Spotify Connect, Chromecast built-in, and AirPlay 2. You just open Spotify on your phone and select the receiver as your speaker.
Thanks for choosing Sony.

I picked this receiver up on sale and it goes on sale a lot, so if your looking for a great all around Av receiver that’s priced well this is it! Loved this unit easily controlled and setup is a breeze with Sonys on display setup. 10/10 budget loud movie/gaming/stereo system.

I was a little nervous about purchasing an open-box Sony Receiver, but for nearly half the price, I decided to give it a try, knowing I could return it if I wasn't satisfied. After setting it up, I was very happy with the sound and video. The picture quality from my computer was much clearer than it was with the receiver I replaced.
Thank you for sharing your experience with your open-box Sony Receiver, GlennS. It's great to hear that, despite your initial reservations, you found both the sound and video performance exceeded your expectations—especially at such a significant value. We're especially pleased that the improved picture quality from your computer made a noticeable difference. Your feedback is incredibly valuable, and we're glad you gave us the opportunity to show how an open-box product can still deliver exceptional results. If you have any questions or need further support, we're here to help ensure you continue enjoying your receiver.
Thank you for choosing Sony!
