    It's Star Blazers!

This is a great tale of a heroic crew fighting against nearly insurmountable odds against an evil enemy bent on the destruction of Earth. It's 100% based on and pays amazing tribute to the old anime it is based on, which in America came to us as Star Blazers back in the 70's and has been replicated numerous times in animated movies and series since. The picture is great on this Blu Ray, the special effects are excellent, and the casting is fantastic. The ship designs, the costumes, the bridge design--all kinds of little details--are inspired heavily by or are ripped right out of the original anime. The story is altered in some ways towards the end, but it creates a self-contained story (which actually was the original intent when the anime was created, goes the scuttlebutt). The English dub is passable, but not epic, and the only reason for 4 instead of 5 stars. If you can do subtitles, might enjoy the Japanese dialogue more. If you aren't familiar with Star Blazers or the original Japanese version, Space Battleship Yamato, then this might not be quite as exciting for you, but it's still a great sci fi flick--and it might suck you in and make you a new fan. If you are a fan of the original cartoon, then you are in for a huge amount of satisfying space battleship nostalgia. Just seeing the trailers was exhilarating, and the movie itself did not disappoint. It's really amazing that this film is so satisfying, because I don't think the budget was all that huge. I'd say if you liked the effects on something like Battlestar Galactica, the reboot, then you'll find this works. If you are a fan of the old cartoon, you should check out the reboot, Yamato 2199, too. I personally like the new 2199 anime better than this movie, actually, but it's much longer and even closer to the original (right down to the incidental music and sound effects and tech designs), and it looks amazing (the original Star Blazers was never remastered for distribution in America in all these years and shows its age somewhat) and takes things in a few new directions (all satisfying). If you can't get 2199 (or prefer live action to animated action), then this will hold you over, for sure, and I recommend them both. If you're a fan of the original, you really will enjoy this movie, and if you're just looking for some new sci fi that's original and epic, this should fit the bill.

Had to buy this Japanese video. Reminded me of my youth coming home from school. I believe this movie remake was based on the original cartoon series out of Japan circa 1979. "Man's last great hope for survival, The quest for Iscandar". This movie is great if you liked the Godzilla movies of old with updated CGI special effects. Japanese with English subtitles and acting is an improvement over other Asian dubbed movies. A bit melodramatic in some areas, but you gotta love the classic Japan style. A must have for any young SciFi Animi lover or Japan file. An homage to the old Battlestar Galactica and Top Gun genre.

This is a pretty good rendition of the late 70's "Starblazers". Probably should be done as a tv series on Netflix to be able to get the full story line in. That being said it is a decent screenplay that brings in all the key elements of the series and their characters. The FX are good and so is the acting for what it is. Music is very good. The Gamalans are somewhat cheesy and one scene looked cheaply done. Still a good overall entertainment.

This live action movie adaptation of the anime series (known in the U.S. as "Star Blazers") is a something fans have been waiting for. And it pretty much delivers, even though the story condensed into a couple of hours. The cast does a great job bringing these characters to life, and the special effects work is grand. If your a fan of the anime, this is a must have.

The movie was action packed but definitely had a low budget feel about it. I didn't realy feel like it was completely true to the original cartoon. All things considered it was definitely worth watching if you were a fan of the original cartoons from the 70s'. Would love to see a sequel with a bigger budget and better actors! Bring on Captain Gidion and the Andromeda!

this is a great attempt to bring the anime to life. you have to go into it with and open mind and relize that they couldnt make a faithful adaptation. i do like what they changed and the humor that they did it with. i wont give anything away other than the ending is new, and what i thought, was well done. great ride for a fan of the anime or the newbe (dont worry about getting the inside jokes). the only thing i would suggest (as in any movie a diffrent language that your own) is watch it japanese with the subtitles. you lose all emotion in dubed translation.

watched the cartoons of this movie growing up, a lot of similarities which made it good. the story line was great, a lot of action with some intense scenes. the ending of the movie is different from the cartoon which threw me for a loop. those of you that like anime and watched "Starblazers" would know about this cartoon that was in the late 70's early 80's..

if you grew up in the 70s and early 80s you were probably addicted to weekend cartoons, and probably seen some of the anime that was on and thought how cool would this be if it was real... well apparently someone over in Japan thought the same thing and made a live action movie of Star Blazers (aka space battleship yamato). good movie for a little trip down nostalgia lane. PS if you go to buy this in the store, look under the anime section, even though its live action not a cartoon they put it there anyway.

When I was growing up, I would rush home after school to watch the series and now they have gone and made a live action movie out of it. I'm only slightly disappointed that it was so short, but they did a wonderful job of keeping most of the storyline in tact just cutting away some of the side stories that didn't mean much to the main goal of the Yamato and its journey to Iscandar.

I bought this as a blind buy but it was well worth it. They have this in the anime section, so I thought it was animated, nope, it's live action but that's OK, this movie is really awesome! Great directing, great acting, great story and great special effects. I wish this movie had more publicity because it's really good but a sleeper, as not enough people know about it. If you enjoy foreign films and sic-fi space sagas, grab this, it's worth it.

for a live adaptation of the 70's Japanese anime, this film stays close to original story told in the first series. some creative privilege has been taken, but it is a decent film for previous starblazers watchers

I remember the Star Blazers cartoon as a kid so when I heard there was live action version I was all in. The depiction of the original story is mostly accurate but the antagonist in the movie was slightly changed. Overall, I wasn't disappointed.

While not for everyone this movie will entertain fans of the anime and sci-fi in general. The look of the film is great and the story has been done well enough for non-fans to follow and enjoy it. Nice amount of special features as well.

As a fan of the 70's cartoon, I was rather pensive in my approach to picking this up. However I was not disappointed. The story was good, and CGI very good. As the producer had to combine 3 seasons worth of material into one 2 1/2 movie they did a pretty good job. Spoiler Alert ! They could have done a better job with the Gamilons, and what is Starblazers without Leader Deslock!

Being a fan of the original anime series, I had high expectations. The romance felt flat, the melodrama was very "1970s", but good space-fighter maneuvering since Babylon 5.

if you like the Japanese animate of ladies you will love this, I like a lot of the Japanese Annamae the computer graphics are well up to the part of anything you'll find in US . It is done by favorite company that does the Godzilla movies but that shouldn't be held against them to very well-done movie I like it when did anybody who's in the Annamae.

It took a while for the US to get this live action version of Starblazers, but it was worth the wait. It was cool seeing all the characters I grew up with come to life. Needed more Wave Motion Gun action though. :)

When I was 11 years old, I used to commander my 1st girlfriends Television set to sit and watch this cartoon. When the Live remake came out, it was only in Japanese. To my surprise and the help of a Best Buy worker to read the small print on the Blue Ray disc, it came in both languages! A great Movie for those who remember!!
