Fantastic 4K picture and sound for 1 hour then the picture and sound froze. I took the disk out and inspected it - no scratches or obvious defects. I put it back in and scrolled forward to the same place - this time after a few seconds it froze then jumped forward two chapters. The disk is substandard and shouldn't have passed QA, what a disappointment.

Paramount really dropped the ball on this one. The version you see on streaming services definitely outclasses this one.

~ Star Trek VI finally comes to 4K UHD with slip ~

Star Trek VI finally comes to 4K and I do have to say it looked improved over the Blu-ray version on my Sony 4K player and Sony 4K TV with HDR. It's not a stellar improvement, but it is in my opinion. The ships and scenery with battle scenes and all looked really good, and the 7.1 is spot on.
Both the Director and Theatrical versions are on the 4K.
Easy selections there on menu. Still image of movie and background music.
I own over 150 4K movies now, and at least 500 Blu-rays. Still have DVDs also of TV shows, some movies not out on HD formats to this day.
I would have to say as a sidenote, that the recent Pirates of the Caribbean movie released on 4K is abysmal in comparison to the nicely done Blu-ray release on that one.
Star Trek VI is NOTHING like that here.
I am a Star Trek fan also and have the original TV series on Blu-ray steelbooks, all three seasons, The Next Generation on Blu-ray sets, Voyager Complete series DVD, Deep Space Nine complete series DVD, Star Trek Enterprise complete series on Blu-ray.
Star Trek VII, VIII, IX, X on Blu-ray.
Hopefully Paramount will get us a box set or individual releases of TNG movies on 4K next year.
I recommend this one!

Disappointing 4K-UHD Transfer

I've been a fan of Star Trek since 1966. I have all the films and even a collection of the original series, as well as Star Trek: TNG. I've had many of the above on VHS, Laserdisc and regular DVD. I was really hoping this recent transfer up to 4K-UHD with Dolby Vision would be spectacular. It certainly should have been.
Sadly, I have to say it wasn't even close. I found the film to be DARK AND GRAINY. I currently own over a thousand discs, with well over 400 being Blu-ray and so far I have 97 4K-UHD films. So I've gotten pretty good at knowing what a good transfer should look like . . . and this ain't it!
I just read a professional review where even it acknowledged this transfer is at best rated at B+. I think that was overly-generous, as this should at best be a C-. My equipment is a fully ISF Calibrated LG-G2 77" OLED, Panasonic 9000 player and an upper-end Denon receiver. Paramount should be ashamed of this transfer.
