Bumpy Start
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.First of all, the only reason I'm giving this TV four stars is because for the first couple of weeks after turning it on, it would randomly shut off and restart. If you do a search on this TV, you will see that this is somewhat of an issue with several of these TV's. I did not call TCL support, because I read enough about this issue to know that everyone that called got the same story...software issue with version 8.2.2...and that there was a fix in development. I will say though that the random shut downs have seemed to stopped. I haven't had a random shut down in about a week. I checked the version last night to see if it had updated...still says 8.2.2 but there was a build number 4097. I'm not sure if that isn't different build number, so maybe it's fixed?!? Now...with that being said...the TV itself...is amazing. I replaced a Samsung 50" KU6300 with this TV, and the picture quality is much better on this TV. And I paid less for this TV than I did the Samsung. I bought it because CNET.com rated it as it's best budget gaming TV. It has not disappointed. I play a lot of Call of Duty and I must say, I can tell a difference with this TV. I have a 4K Sharp and a 4K Samsung in my home, and as far as picture quality goes, this TV definitely outperforms both of them. The black levels on this TV are great. The built in Roku is a plus with it's easy to use and intuitive interface. Roku has become one of those things that you wonder "How did I ever live without this?". Again, if not for the random shutting down, right out of the box, I would have given this TV 5 stars easily.

Great Picture if you aren't picky
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have read a ton of reviews and have seen a lot of people say they have experienced vertical banding on their TCL 6 series. I had just purchased the TCL P605 from best buy and used that for a day and that left me wanting more. So I returned it and paid the extra money for the 6 series. I will say, the picture is amazing. The tvs ability to produce an HDR image at the peak brightness that it does astounds me for the price. Every thing about this tv amazes me. Even the 60hz panel handles motion quite well. Much better than my previous LG 55UF7600. Gaming is enjoyable, at least until you have to actually look somewhere on the game. Any panning motion and the vertical banding everyone is talking about is quite visible. I had hoped that it wouldn't effect me but I guess I'm not that lucky. If it weren't for the banding, I'd rank this tv up there against the Samsung qled tvs. But until that's fixed, I gotta rate it low. I have 12 days left to return. Might have to. $600 is steep for a tv that has something as easily noticeable as banding.

Great picture - poor user interface
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is the best "TV" I have owned, great colors, good scaling of HD/SD content, etc, but I dislike it because of the remote and single task interface. The built-in tuner for over the air broadcasts is very good, but if one watches both broadcast TV & Roku channels it is clumsy to switch back and forth. While there is a home button for the Roku interface, there is no physical button to jump back to broadcast TV or even select between HDMI inputs. One is forced to go through the Roku home screen and loose all context if watching some show/clip within a roku channel, taking 5 button presses to switch over to TV viewing. And likely way more than 5 buttons to return back to the streaming content one is about to switch away from. On the TV side the only way to switch channels quickly is to bring up the listing, which is quite nice and fast to display, but if you receive a lot of stations it is not ideal to scroll through the list. And then if want to go back and finish watching that roku channel clip that you might have wanted to pause, you must wade back through the specific channel interface. Meaning that a non-smart TV + external Roku provide a better viewing experience than this all in one unit, so much so that I am considering plugging back in my old Roku 3 to watch streaming content.

Posted .Hi David,
In addition to the remote that it comes with you can also download the free Roku mobile app on your smartphone or tablet. The Roku app works as a remote in addition to providing other features like voice search and private listening. Also, through the app you can click directly on inputs and specific streaming channels to go straight to that content instead of going through the home page. Hope this helps and happy viewing!
Thank you,

Excellent buy for the money!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Hello, I have the so-called Dirty-Screen Effect on my set as well. I guess there are certain programs, like hockey games, where this would be a problem, but not for me. Hockey looked fine to me, but I expect a little less for what I paid for. Look, this TV is less than half the cost of competing sets as far as brightness, clarity, and feature set. Don't like some QC defect? GO SPEND 2-3X MORE MONEY! Simple, Boom, DONE. I spent less, and as a result, have expected less. Know what? I'm literally blown away by this set. I came from a 40" 1080P 120Hz (actual motion) and to say that the input lag, color gamut, pop and brightness are 5x better than my old set would be putting it lightly. I did swap the mountable feet, so they point inwards. My set is sturdy, and by no means top-heavy. For those of you with a 'narrow' TV stand... simply install the feet pointing in. Playing video games, the HDR on my XBOX One-S is awesome. 4K Youtube videos play beautifully, especially the ones that the authors didn't over-compress. No DSE anywhere, I am in AWE. The Roku OS is also a slam-dunk. It's fast, has a million options, and just awesome. I can stream stuff right from my Samsung phone without chromecast. It's laggy and choppy, however. Photos are fine, but it's not for motion. I'm on wifi AC and TV is hard-wired to the router. I can stream from my DLNA server and it's fast and smooth, even 4K streams. The Roku app for it needs a lot of work, but that's not Roku/TCL's fault. I'm very impressed by this TV. Sure, I watched the Youtube DSE test vids, and there is some ugly smudging, but 97% of what I watch, is 100% totally AWESOME. YMMV, Best Buy accepts returns, don't lose out by not giving it a try.

Best value ever
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought the tcl 6 series 55 inch TV and I couldn't be happier with the set. This is the best value product I have ever bought. The picture quality out performs it's price point by miles. This TV looks at least as good if not better than my brothers 1200 dollar Vizio p. He did get the 65 inch though. I wanted the 65 inch but my wife didn't want to mount the set, the entertainment center I have wasn't big enough for the 65, I didn't want to spend 200+ more on a new entertainment center, and the 55 was 350 dollars cheaper. The picture quality is on par with with sets two- there times more expensive. The built in Roku ultra works flawlessly and the build quality seems good and stylish enough at the price point. Unless you are a videophile, and I suspect even some videophiles will find the set pleasing enough to the eye, I don't know why any one would spend money on any other TV except oled, which is crazy expensive. The things that more expensive TV's are slightly better at such as being slightly brighter or having slightly better hdr engines are not worth paying almost 2-3x's as much for in imho,

Great TV for price, with some drawbacks
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I got this as an extra TV for a bedroom. If you've read any online reviews, you'll know you're getting a great TV for the price, with 4K and both Dolby Vision and HDR10 supported. Very low input lag in game mode. The Roku interface is also stellar and by far the most responsive TV interface I've used. That being said, there are some drawbacks to a TV in this price range that you should know about before purchasing. It is a native 60 Hz panel, but in practice this hasn't been an issue so far. Motion in some content doesn't look quite as good as my far more expensive 120 Hz living room TV, but it still looks great. HDR looks impressive, but it won't pop quite as much as more expensive TVs due to the lower overall peak brightness. Lastly, and this can be quite common to TVs in this price range, screen uniformity isn't perfect. This can vary from panel to panel, but seems to be a common occurrence on TCL TVs. On my screen, you can see some vertical banding on solid colors, as well as noticeable vignetting at the corners. While it isn't noticeable in most content, it's there, so it just depends on how sensitive you are to it (and how bad your panel is). Personally I would step up to at least a Sony X900F or similar for my primary home theater TV, but it makes an absolutely stellar bedroom/secondary TV.

Amazing TV for the money! Best TV for under $1000!
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This TV offers features you wont find on TV's until you spend a minimum of $1000. Full array local dimming, Dolby vision, etc. The picture is really impressive and at $500 on sale? It was a steal. Now at that price getting the 5 year Geek Squad Protection plan was a no-brainer at only $100 extra and you could get that if you have any worries or reservations about the quality or reliability of buying a Chinese TV. Plus the Roku features are great! The remote included is only that small Roku remote that you find when you buy a Roku streaming box, and at first glance I was a little underwhelmed, but my opinion of that changed very quickly when I realized you don't need anything more than that with how intuitive the menus are. Everything was designed so intelligently and is so simple to make changes in an instant. I'm so glad I went this route instead of spending $1500+ for a Samsung or something. Worth every penny. TCL has really been hitting it out of the park lately. Believe the hype

Awesome 4k TV for the $$
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.TLDR; Great TV for $$ and no real complaints to speak of so far. Was hesitant about TCL as they are a newer to the TV market, but the 6 series (55”) has blown away all my concerns especially for the money. Has many features you would find on more expensive TVs (e.g. full array LED. local dimming zones, HDR and Dolby Vision to name a few). It’s very bright if you need it to be (almost hurts the eyes sometimes I swear) and has deep blacks. Better for dark rooms, but isn’t too bad in bright rooms although glare from a window can make it harder to see (gets worse the sunnier it is out obviously ). I didn’t notice the viewing angle issues as some have mentioned, but also not sitting at extreme angles either. Not the best for sports as it’s a 60hz panel no matter what TCL says about it having the ability to do 120hz (for soccer/futbol sometimes the ball would ghost really bad like disappearing and then reappearing - think only fast moving objects for example). All things considered would absolutely recommend to anyone looking to buy a cheap(er) 4k TV that’s still a quality purchase especially if looking to upgrade to 4k for those with XB1 X’s for an enhanced gaming experience. Roku OS is excellent as well and has an easy to use interface for those trying to decide between 4k TVs based on the OS.

Very good budget TV!
||Posted . Owned for more than 2 years when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Very good TV for mixed usage. The R617 is a versatile TV that's good for pretty much everything. There are some gray uniformity issues, which makes it a less good choice for sports due to the dirty screen effect, and the image degrades rapidly when viewed at an angle, which is bad for those with wide seating. Great TV for watching movies in a dark room. The TCL 6 Series has an excellent native contrast ratio, and the local dimming feature is decent for dimming darker areas of the screen. There may be some issues with uniformity, depending on your specific panel. The 55R617 is amazing for playing video games. Gamers will enjoy the incredibly low input lag and great response time, plus it has a black frame insertion feature to help reduce motion blur. This TV has a great contrast ratio, resulting in deep blacks if you game in the dark. Unfortunately, if you're looking for an immersive gaming experience, the sound quality is disappointing. However, this TV displays 1080p content, such as from older consoles, almost as well as 4k content.

I was hesitant but glad I made the purchase.
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I read about the vertical banding issue that is supposed to be on this model and I'm pretty OCD to things like that so I knew if it was as bad as some people say that I wouldn't be able to deal with it. I ran the test they have on youtube as soon as I powered the tv on. I did see a little bit of the vertical bands/cloudiness but it was no where near as bad as I was expecting. Honestly, if i had never heard of it, I probably would have never noticed it. I haven't noticed it in anything we watch, only a little in the test. (So sorry if you read this and haven't heard about it). This TV has an awesome Picture! Netflix in 4k really pops. The blacks are so much blacker than my sony LED (which is only a year old and cost way more). Some scenes you will literally think the TV is off... The Roku smart tv is really great as well. There's actually a lot of free content available thru it, both movies and shows. I've had a few times where the tv acted a little glitchy but only a couple. I bought this when it was $100 off, and we're super happy with it. I would say that Roku is better than Android TV that is on our sony and I'm a huge Android fan. For the money, you really can't go wrong with this. We're using it in our bedroom, but I could see this being a main TV easily.

Solid choice with top features
||Posted . Owned for 1 year when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I went to Best Buy looking for a 4K UHD, with brands like Sony, Samsung, and LG in mind. The associate I worked with suggested the TCL 6 series and I've been super pleased with it. Roku is pretty standard for connected TVs now, so I don't mind the main interface. For a while, I had problems at my older apartment where the software would crash when I switched inputs. It was definitely a power issue, though, because I have had no such issues in my new, more modern apartment. If you do have an older house or apartment, you might want to keep this in mind. I am often blown away by the image quality. Deep blacks and vibrant colors; the 4K UHD is excellent. I recommend immediately grabbing the top-line Netflix subscription, which provides a slew of titles rendered in 4K and Dolby Vision. Watching Stranger Things S03.07 will give you a great tech demo in the Fun Fair scenes. The soft lighting from colored neons in these night scenes pops briliantly & smoothly. Other apps like Amazon Prime Video has a lot of 4K titles, but good lord that Roku app UI/UX is a nightmare.

Awesome Quality for the Price
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The 6 series TCL is one of only a handful of purchases I don't regret making a few weeks down the line. This tv has amazing picture quality for 4k content, especially HDR/Dolby Vision content. Upscaling non 4k content is about the same for all 4k tvs I've seen. 1080p depending on the source can vary, Netflix for example looks great especially @60hz, your old favorites look amazing. YouTube 1080p content is ok, 720p will be noticeable less quality. I just want to make sure people know you are making a slight sacrifice with a 4k tv. Using it as a PC monitor it displays 4k@60hz with HDR and a wide color gamut in windows 10. Just make sure you have a premium certified HDMI cable (any cable that can do 4k@60hz is fine don't spend $40 for a HDMI cable). Text looks crisp and displays in 4:4:4 chroma. I had no banding on my set, a little bit of dirty screen effect, but almost all Tvs have that. I put it through endless tests, didn't find the issues people are worrying about. With BestBuy you can return within 15 days. For the price it is unbeatable. You only get better quality with Tvs almost twice the price.

Solid, maybe not as great as the rave reviews
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.PROS: --4K and HDR content is at times spectacular; way better than I expected for this price --Streaming content from most apps, particularly UHD content from Netflix, look great --Dark scenes in movies really show the deep blacks of this display --I love the user interface and remote; navigation through apps and menus is very fast and smooth --The price --Setup and ease of use are excellent CONS: --Super reflective even in a very low light room --Doesn't handle motion all that well --Upscaling isn't great on some apps, which will matter if you're a cord cutter --Vertical bands, dirty screen effect viewing hockey and soccer --The first unit I received smelled of burning plastic --Poor QC and customer service by the manufacturer --Out of box picture settings for non-4k/Dolby/HDR content require considerable adjusting to get a good picture The above lays it out pretty well. I do want to note specifically that fans of soccer and hockey should do some extensive viewing within the return period. I did this on my first display, which was sent back due to the aforementioned odor. It slipped my mind with the second and I have since discovered some noticeable vertical banding or dirty screen effect during panning across hockey rinks and soccer fields (TCL calls this "perfectly normal"). I understand a LOT of displays have this to an extent, so you will need to make sure its tolerable for you while viewing sports. I would imagine this would be a big issue for gamers as well. I can't imagine this TV is even viewable in bright rooms. My display is in a lower level room with low light and still reflects the white wall behind the area from where the TV is being viewed. This is mostly confined to dark scenes, but still an area where TCL could improve. I do love how this TV performs with 4K and HDR content though. Paired it with a TCL soundbar and the Sony X700 4K/HDR blu ray player and I love watching movies on this TV now. You will want to take some time to calibrate this TV. I just used online resources like CNET and RTINGS It's far from perfect and probably not as good as some of the rave reviews I read, but

Great TV for the Money
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I did a lot of reseach on an a new TV and this one was checking all the boxes for features I wanted. The price was certianly good too! I've been using it for a few months now and I am generally very happy with it. The HDR looks amazing and the picture quality is very good with very nice black levels. There are a few minor issues though. The TV will sometimes not recognize the main HDMI input (from my AV Receiver) but it can be corrected by turning it off and on. It has only happrened rarely. I also sometimes see the "dark corners" though when you fraw your attention to them, they seem to go away. I feel like this may be a trick of the eyes more than anything else. Otherwise, this has been a fantastic TV with a great 4K picture! For this price I don't think you can go wrong!

Great Price for Great Specs
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Absolutely love this TV. Some background: I've been looking at the TCL tv for a couple of years. Last year's model was called the P series and it was getting rave reviews. I let the excitement settle down and checked it again at the end of its product cycle, and people were still saying it was the best TV you could get for south of $1,000. So when the 5 and 6 series came out, I was very excited for the next iteration. I got this TV and previously had a 4K TV that didn't have HDR. But the moment I plugged in my PS4 and Apple TV, it was very clear how much better this TV was to my old one. It has top of the line specs at a rock bottom price (proportionally), which makes sense since TCL is trying to establish its name in a saturated market. I Had done my research, so I wasn't swayed when the Sales Specialist tried to sell me on the 'bigger brand names' like samsung, sony, LG, etc. last thing; absolutely get the geek squad protection. guarantees you to have this great of picture for 5 years. the only thing I really get geek squad protection on.

Awesome upgrade!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I’ve been researching tv’s for numerous months, and I finally decided to choose this one. This tv was deemed the best overall tv for its price point, and because of the features it contains. I didn’t allow past negative reviews of the product to alter my decision making in anyway. I’m proud to say this tv has blown me away, it’s everything I expected and more. Setting it up was a breeze and I literally had no issues with anything whatsoever. I also did a white screen test from the youtube app, I didn’t see any noticeable screen defects or vertical banding issues at all. I’m no tv enthusiast, but overall, this is a solid tv in all facets. If you’re looking for the best budget 4K gaming smart tv, well look no longer, because this tv is the perfect choice!

Incredible value for the price
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Honestly this TV performs at a higher rate than it’s price value. For another name brand you will likely pay double so even with a protection plan you won’t even come close to the original cost of a well known brand. The specs on this easily compete to the newest trend of improving color and HDR accurately. Theres a risk of the banding but again with the protection plan or if you find it in the first 14 days you can get one for that doesn’t have it. If it does have it it’s not as noticeable as you might think according to the staff (mine did not have it so I am not sure how much of an effect it has.) overall I would assume it’s not as often as suggested as many of these sort of things tend to happen to less than 5% of owners. I have had a samsung LED tv prior that cost $150 for a lense because of dead pixels. So no brand is immune. This is a tv for the well researched. It’s not OLED but it’s what you get while you wait for the price tobe good enough to justify for such a tv

Beautiful image, insane HDR
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Cranky those colors up! The sound is ok, and the HDR IS ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL! However the first purchase I got and brought home it was absolutely shattered. Took it back to Best Buy; they sort of gave me a hard time about it and inspected it like I did something wrong. Second one home. Good image. Finally can see it without it being damaged. Has noticeable image uniformity distortion, and suffers with BAD DSE with grays and whites. Noticeable on the revenant, hockey, and shadow of the colossus and menus that are white or grey like YouTube, Plex, etc. I give this a 4 only because of the “dirty screen effect” being so bad; along with a bit of a laggy menu and horrible remote with no keyboard or rf/Bluetooth support. It’s very difficult to get the menu to change pointing it directly at the receiver on the front of the tv. Never had a remote this bad. I’ve attached a photo of the dirty screen effect.

Best TV I've ever owned
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Over the past year, I've gone from a P605 to an LG C7 to a Sony X900F, and finally to the R615. I can confidently say this is the best TV I've ever owned. The smart system is honestly the best put there with the Roku platform. The picture quality is out of this world. It combines the high brightness I loved about the Sony in HDR with the really deep blacks that I would expect from an OLED due to the really good local dimming implementation. The only thing I would add is that I would love to have 4 HDMI ports rather than the 3 that I have now. Would just be nice to have an extra full bandwidth slot.
