When I was looking forward to buying this game, I went to GameStop first. Unfortunately they didn't have it for a week. And in the end, it was none other than the Best Buy in Simi Valley that has copies at the front right before they stocked it in the electronic's section. As for the game, it's an ABSOLUTE MUST for any Nintendo 3DS owner and Zelda fan. Majora's Mask combines features old and new that are exciting new additions. Only downside is the lack of a time trial boss feature and Master Quest/Hero Mode difficulty upon beating the game (as seen in Ocarina of Time 3D). Nonetheless, this is one pivotal title you can't miss out on for your 3DS collection.

    Shooting The Moon

Taking place shortly after the conclusion of Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask is a Zelda game unlike any other. Ransacked by the Skull Kid while riding Epona through a forest, Link is robbed of his possessions, turned into a plant, and transported to a doomed world. With only three days to prevent the moon from crashing down and destroying everything, Majora’s Mask’s Groundhog Day-like narrative is dark, memorable, and full of emotion. Like the re-release of Ocarina of Time on 3DS, Majora’s Mask has received the same amount of loving care in both the visual department as well as gameplay. With significant improvements over the N64 original, the updated graphics make the world of Termina look better than ever. Further, the use of stereoscopic 3D makes exploring Termina a constant pleasure especially when playing on a New 3DS XL system. Beyond the obvious visual upgrade, the use of the New 3DS second analog nub makes play control efficient and comfortable although not necessary to fully enjoy the game; the Circle Pad Pro is also supported. I played through most of the adventure using an original model 3DS and never had an issue. Unlike the HD edition of the Wind Waker on Wii U, this Majora’s Mask re-release features additional camera control options, such as the ability to reverse the Y axis, via the menu options. Using the touch screen also makes swapping and accessing items a snap. There are also several new additional features spread throughout the game that enhance this 3D remastering over the original. First is the Bomber’s Notebook. Obtained early in the adventure, this digital diary logs all of Link’s progress and even keeps track of side quests automatically. It comes in handy especially since Termina is filled with secrets and side stories to explore and can help prevent players from looking up FAQs online. The Sheikah Stone found in the clocktower is also extremely helpful by gently providing hints to the player when progress gets “stuck.” Like an in-game Vine, these short videos tell the player where to go and where they have been. Purists might think this is a form of cheating but since the player specifically needs to go out of their way to access this stone, it is solely optional and there when you need it. I personally used it a few times throughout the adventure since Majora’s Mask’s difficulty is higher than other 3D Zelda titles from a puzzle, dungeon, and exploring point of view. One of the major complaints about the N64 original was the save system. Before, the game would only hard save when Link would travel back in time to the First Day by playing the Song of Time on the Ocarina of Time, with temporary saves via owl statues deeply spread throughout the land. Once these temp saves were reloaded, the N64 cartridge would immediately delete them. This 3DS remake, with more memory available, corrects this issue by allowing the player to hard save at any statue. This, in combination with the ability to instantly travel to any unlocked statue, makes the game more playable especially for a handheld environment. The only negative aspect of this new save system is that it takes away a little something from the ominous doom that constantly plagues the player with the falling moon. Some heart pieces have also been relocated from the original release, new fishing features are available as optional side objectives, swimming control is also different but negatively makes jumping out of the water more difficult than it should be when playing as a Zora, and even controlling the Goron roll move has received an upgrade. With just a couple minor exceptions, all the changes made enhance the Majora’s Mask experience as oppose to hinder it. The ability to travel forward in time to any specific hour also makes gameplay more friendly. There is no question that Majora’s Mask is an outstanding game that stands as a one-of-a-kind but there are still some issues with the overall experience that makes the journey through Termina a little more tedious than it needs to be. First is the time mechanic. The entire game is based around time continually ticking away through the three day cycle. While this makes questing entertaining, as certain things only happen at specific times on specific days, it requires plenty of backtracking and repeated steps. For example, relieving the frozen Goron village of its icy prison unlocks new areas and secrets. But in order to change the season from winter to summer, the player will need to travel back to the dungeon and defeat the boss again. This becomes a pain when all you want to do is collect that one piece of heart at the bottom of river. The same goes for the final topsy-turvy dungeon. Here, Link learns an ocarina tune that allows him to make a stationary copy of himself to help with switch puzzles. This tune, however, is one of the longest in the game and must be replayed over and over to get through the same areas. It would be nice if these statues just remained instead of magically disappearing as soon as you walk through one door. The biggest complain about the time mechanic is that sometimes you just simply need more time. For example, I was about 95% of my way through a dungeon when I was forced to revert back to Day One because the moon was literally just seconds away from crashing. Since I had to reset the world, I was then forced to play through the entire dungeon again since all the puzzles reset as well. This is only amplified because the game encourages exploration but if you get caught up exploring, or try to gather every last hidden fairy in each dungeon, the player can easily run out of time and be forced to redo everything all over again. Time management has never been more of a factor in gameplay. There is an option to slow time to half its speed but I almost wish there was a way to freeze time temporarily just to get through a dungeon without having to replay it all over again. Since the freakishly faced moon can be seen from almost anywhere, it is a constant reminder to stay on track to help save this world. This feeling of dread, worry, and just overall doom makes Majora’s Mask the darkest Zelda adventure ever created but also one that shouldn’t be ignored. Although the time mechanic can get on your nerves sometimes, the enhanced features help alleviate some of this pain in this 3D re-release. Launching alongside Nintendo New 3DS XL handheld system, there has never been a better way to play this N64 classic. Even if you played the 64-bit original to death, there are plenty of reasons to travel through Termina one more time.

This is probably the hardest of the Zelda series, seeing as it is the only one with an actually time limit. But it's still a great play, and accurately shows the 5 stages of grief while telling an excellent story. If you played Zelda 64, then you owe yourself this title to seeing as it's one of the few direct sequels.

I never got the opportunity to play through Majora's Mask, the companion to perhaps one of the best games ever created: Ocarina of Time. Not only has picking up this new DS version allowed me to relive the exciting puzzles, dungeons, and characters from the series but the game seems to have withstood the test of time and arrives perfectly and elegantly to the DS handheld. The controls work surprisingly well, and the graphics have taken the N64 version to a new, more polished level. I will say Majora's Mask is a bit more challenging than Ocarina of Time. This is one of those titles you can't casually pick up and expect not to invest many hours and frustrations conquering the quests. This game is definitely a must-have for the DS library.

I may be biased, because this is my favorite game, but I will definitely tell you my two small beefs with the 3D remaster of Majora's Mask. First, however, the best things: -3D Anju and Kafei heartbreak -3D Nostalgia -Somehow improved controls (I say somehow, because I wasn't even using the new 3DS, so I don't have the extra stick for the camera--regardless, most everything feels smoother and more intuitive) -Playing the song of double time allows you to CHOOSE WHICH HOUR you want to fast forward to. No more being bound to going all the way to the next night or next dawn. So beautiful. I could go on, but suffice it to say, the game feels on the whole more polished, and they put a lot of love into the remake. It's definitely worth the buy. But the two main beefs I have are small--swimming as a zora is way less awesome. The dropping to the bottom/surfacing is sorta janky, and in order to swim such that you can dolphin dive out and into the water, you have to expend magic. It's just a bummer that regular zora swimming was reduced to a slower, less maneuverable state. Otherwise, the goron form took some getting used to, because rolling up into a ball is not undone with the release of A. You have to press A again which doesn't sound at all hard (and isn't) but when you want to get out of ball form super quickly (like, immediately after a ramp jump) it was easier to just be able to release A mid jump, so that the first thing you'd do upon landing would be unball. </rant> This was a beautiful remake and my beefs are infinitesimally small compared to how nice everything else is. Nintendo kept the dark, creepy vibe, made the moon look way better (in my opinion) and delivered the game well.

    A Great Update

I had tried to get into Majora's Mask for the N64 3 or 4 times previously, but many of the more tedious aspects surrounding the design of the game kept me from getting too immersed in the most unique Zelda game to date. Those issues (numerous side quests with no log, a frustrating save system, and some performance issues) have largely been solved in the update. A new record keeping Bomber's Notebook helps you to keep track of the schedules and events occuring within Termina over the 3 day span of the game, so you can conveniently reference and jump back into quests even if you've left the game alone for a week. Save points no longer teleport you back to the start of the 3 day period, and instead save the direct moment in which you save. These conveniences make the game much more modern while preserving the classic 64 Zelda that has been so ingrained in the gaming consciousness since the release of this classic over 14 years ago. The graphical and user-interface updates are much appreciated and the game looks gorgeous, especially in 3D. The ability to use either the circle pad pro accessory or the C-stick on the New 3DS makes it easier to appreciate the world of the game as you can new freely move the camera instead of being stuck in the game's auto tracking or 1st person view mode. As a result of these changes, the world of Termina has new life breathed into it, making it a dark, colorful, immersive vision into the dark dream that is The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. No one who has never played this title should miss it.

Way back when this game came out on the Nintendo64, people tended to either love or hate it. It was the sequel to the award-winning Ocarina of Time, and being that it was so different from its predecessor, some fans just couldn't get into it. Fast forward to now, it seems players are way more willing to give it a chance and love it. Its darker tone and spooky story are a bit unusual for a Zelda game, but it's every bit as enchanting as other titles in the series. The graphics have been excellently updated, and a few features added to make keeping track of sidequests easier. Similar to the time-traveling motif in Ocarina of Time, you're also time-traveling in Majora's Mask--but over the same 3 days, over and over. A little like the movie Groundhog Day, you repeat the days to perfect/complete events that happen throughout to avoid a catastrophic event at the end of the third day. This takes a little time management on the player's part. Some people think it sounds tedious, but I never thought so. There's still a Zelda-type map to explore with various environments (swamp, ocean, mountain, canyon). You can teleport around to save time, and you can manipulate time too. It just takes a little watching the clock. At heart, it is still a Zelda game. On a further note, this game plays great on the New 3DS XL. The New 3DS XL has an extra button you can use to directly control the camera view, plus the improved 3D effect is great. Just nice little perks.

One of the most seemingly harder Zelda titles. As a direct sequel to Ocarina of Time, this game requires you to have basic past Zelda knowledge in at least the title just mentioned. Loved it the first time around and loving it this second time around. The new HD graphics makes the vibrant dark colors of this came pop out at you more and the 3D is just as spectacular, Termina is far much more scenic now thanks to these little bug fixes. Any body who's ever thought about wanting to play a fantasy game where a cynical imp child getting possessed by an omen devil mask and starts a tug of war battle with you by pushing the moon closer and to a pending doom to a world, this is that game for you. Pro-tip: Beat ALL the game, masks, sidequest, every single detail. It is all worth it and makes the story that much more enticing. Also the Time changing has been made out to seem so dreadful, don't worry about that too much it's actually really easy and once you get the hang of it, it just becomes a routine and a daily Zelda puzzle.

back when Majora's Mask was first released on N64, it drew a line. Even long time Zelda fans were split because Nintendo required you buy an extra expansion pack for your N64. The game was grand, and I loved it then. It doesn't really follow the typical Zelda formula as you've got a time limit (3 days in-game) before the moon destroys the world. Now on 3DS, the graphics have been upgraded, and some of the more hardcore quests have been changed so more people can find them. Yes, some will argue that the game got "watered down," but I'm OK with that. I don't have all day to play video games any more, so I can't be fulfilling obscure unnamed objectives in order to unlock secret quests any more. I played the original, and I'm playing the updated version. I love them both. If you have a regular 3DS, IMHO, it works better with the circle pad pro. If you were lucky enough to get the MM 3DS limited edition console... congrats, and, I strongly dislike you.

Majora's Mask is the most unique Zelda titles and one of the best N64 games. This remake takes an amazing game and adds improvements to make it even better. Managing and navigate through time is easier than ever with the ability to chose a specific hour to fast forward to. Additional save statues and the ability to save and quit makes the experience much less stressful. Gyro controls from Ocarina of Time 3D are also in this game and make aiming much more fluent. The graphical overhaul and 3D effects look great while still maintaining the original art style. The game has some of the most unique and fun side quests of any Zelda title. The dungeons are rewarding and the overworld itself acts as a puzzle with managing schedules and times. This is a great for Zelda fans or anyone who loves adventure/puzzle games.

    An Epic Re-Mastered

From the moment you start the game, the familiar nostalgia of an older, simpler time washes over you as the intro to Majora's Mask pans out. The first most notable change is the retexturing of characters and environments. The makers have truly done justice to this timeless classic's remake while managing to preserve the original look and feel of the N64 edition. The second big improvement is the animation bits during actions and cut scenes. There is less general "stop and stare" points between Link donning a new mask to grabbing a new item and a host of other events. Another major improvement is how the rendering was handled for the 3DS. With far more processing power the environments, enemies, and item respawns all happen with amazing fluidity which we've come to expect from the same company that doesn't harp on load screens. The combat and gameplay feel authentic to the N64 experience, but the only downside comes from the overall design of the 3DS. In some positions, the device can lead to hand fatigue after prolonged play. To mitigate this, I keep the screen tilted back fully where it is able to lock and keep more stable, effectively reducing the sway on the hinges and the discomfort from supporting both screens during longer sessions. Overall, I would highly recommend this for any 3DS owner's repertoire (of any age) whether this is their first time experiencing the other side of the Ocarina of Time universe or just another dive down the rabbit hole for them. You won't regret it.

I started playing this game with hopes to see why many people found it to be such as legendary game. After the first cutscenes I began to see why it was such as loved game. Having already played ocarina of time 3d I had similar expectations as far as graphics went and these were indeed met well as the games graphics in comparison to its original have been vastly updated. Playing this on the new 3ds xl is a must as it gave the game a whole new dimension with the custom 3d that tracks your head movement. This made the whole experience that much more immersive. I recommend parents purchase this for their kids as well as monster hunter if they intend to keep their kid occupied for months.

I've played the original game on the N64, and this game lives up to the standard that Legend of Zelda has crafted these past years. Without losing any nostalgia, this remake successfully increased the quality of the game. The controls are much easier. The touch screen gives the user a simplified method of choosing items. I usually don't praise a game because of the graphics, but this game looks stunning. This gives the game world an increased sense of mystery, which is great. It makes you feel more immersed. Overall, this is an incredible game. If you haven't played the original, I highly recommend playing this one. It's a masterpiece.

This game is the reason I finally caved and bought a 3DS. I hadn't owned a handheld Nintendo system since the DS Lite but Majora's Mask has always been one of my favorite Zelda games so I couldn't resist. It's just as good as the original and if you're worried about it being too hard (the original is definitely one of the hardest Zelda games in my opinion, if you're going for full completion) this new version for the 3DS makes things much easier. There's hints available for heart pieces and for how to progress in the storyline. There are also many more places you can save compared to the original. I was a little surprised by how much easier it was made, but hey, that's video games in 2016. Doesn't take away from the quality of the game, though. It's also really cool to be able to play it in 3D, although I usually switch back and forth. If you've never played this game before, definitely pick it up. So much fun to be able to switch between playing as a Deku, Zora, Goron, and of course, Link. One of my favorite things to do is just swim around as a Zora and jump up out of the water...don't know why but it's really fun! If you'd like to revisit Majora's Mask and be able to play it during long car rides, etc., it's also worth purchasing.
