The RPG we wanted Fallout 4 to be

Obsidian Entertainment essentially made Fallout without the Fallout license. It has the same tone as Bethesda's Fallout games despite the setting being wildly different, the gameplay feels similar yet more refined, and there is an added layer of polish that has been absent from this style of game for awhile. Buy this game if: -You enjoy Role Playing Games. -You are a fan of Fallout 3, 4, New Vegas, or even Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines. -You want to see a game developed by masters of the genre. -You like quests with meaningful choices, dialogue with impact, and an atmosphere that is unmatched by modern games in the genre. -You want to support a developer who clearly deserves it. -You dislike abuse of power specifically on a corporate level. Do NOT buy this game if: -RPG's just aren't your thing. -You have astrophobia. -You think Fallout 76 is a genuinely good game. -You love capitalism and corporate abuses of power.* -You dislike dialogue in video games. This is an informal review, thus I wouldn't give the game a score, but this is legitimately everything I, and many others, wanted Fallout 4 to be. I say this as someone who has enjoyed Fallout 4 for ~1000 hours. Seriously, The Outer Worlds is a master class in game design and Obsidian deserves all praise they get. It isn't perfect, there are a few things that the game could use (grenades, third person mode, more Parvati, etc.) but the pros greatly outweigh the cons and I highly recommend it. *Actually, if you like corporate abuses of power then this game might even be for you. It's an RPG to the core and supports you making choices, thus you can be a corporate shill.

Aside from being the Fallout-killer gamers have needed, the game also blends in flavors of Mass Effect and Bioshock - the outcome being a product that is incredibly immersive, but also somewhat shallow in some areas. My first and major gripe is an easy swipe at low hanging fruit: the load times, sweet Zeus are they long. At first I was glad they had some great art to stare at during the load screens, but by the end I wanted to never see them again. Minor gripe aside, what really cuts into the greatness at hand is basically one that can be blamed on something like budget, and that is the game becomes rather redundant certain areas: guns, even though they can be upgraded on multiple way, they do start to become junk-fodder for the inventory menu. And speaking of inventory, I had a TON of it on a normal mode play through - I only used most of the consumable out of curiosity after not having touched them for almost the entire game. The same goes for ammo, armor and weapon upgrades - I hope Supernova mode remedies the general feeling of being overpowered. And lastly, as big as the game feels, and as much player decision is involved, at some point the veil starts to thin and show where the pathways converge. It is worth mentioning that the skill points can definitely change a persons game style and experience. Just don’t expect to be pulling of any no-killing stealth runs, as no matter what you’ll either be shooting or slicing down enemies to progress. Now onto some of the positives. From the get-go, no matter what console, the game looks beautiful. Graphics in detail, such as characters, can be somewhat tamed down from the usual AAA push, but it doesn’t detract attention in any way. Movement is fluid and feels much better than the jank that came with Fallout games - don’t get it wrong, there is still some jank, but not the annoying sort. Dialogue options are fun to play with, and are well worth exploring with almost all characters, most definitely the companions. Some companion stories give a bit more strings to latch onto, but all are still great. Exploring the multiple planets offers a variety of settings, each of them with their own personality and atmosphere. Overall, everything carries a great symbiosis between all of it’s gameplay/story systems. Side missions can be fetch-questish at times, but ultimately most are immersive and fun to take on. As a whole, the game has very little flaws, and where they do exist it’s mostly a matter of the game being a new IP with limitations - fortunately the creators are legendary enough to know where/how to apply the proper amount of experience into the size of game they had in mind. With Obsidian being acquired by MS, I can definitely see this becoming a franchise with bigger and more fruitful ideas, and the small flaws practically erased. The story was in vein with these sort of games, and while this one could’ve had a little more of everything, it succeeds in doing what it set out to do, if not better. I absolutely enjoyed this one, and think it’s fit for all sorts of players to take on, but it’s also clear that fans of Fallout (especially New Vegas) will dig what The Outer Worlds has to offer. I truly hope to see another entry that’s able to expand upon the ideas that are presented in this original.

Obsidian have been making quality video games for years oh, so it's no surprise that their latest endeavor is a game that puts the AAA companies to shame. The Outer Worlds takes you on a trip spanning the galaxies, all of which are run by ruthless corporate juggernauts that you got to fight, ally with, or double cross in the most wonderfully duplicitous ways. Taking its cues from the Fallout series that it helped to create- and then was later improved and ruined simultaneously somehow by Bethesda- Obsidian has given us a first person shooter gem that will rank up there with some of the best the genre has to offer in 2019, easily giving us one of their best stories ever. Dialogue is A+ throughout the game and will have you riveted with every story event you experience throughout the 40 hour run time. So if you like exploring space, shooting aliens, and uncovering secrets as far as the eye can see, take a trip to The Outer Worlds. You won't regret it!

I know a lot of people are comparing this to earlier Fallout games and I'll have to take their word for it. I've only played Fallout 4 and enjoyed it immensely. I can say there are similarities in the game play as well as slight differences, of course. The Outer Worlds does feel a bit more linear than my Fallout experience was. The overall areas to explore are much less than Fallout. I do enjoy wandering, finding side missions, finding odd events, or just exploring a very large map. There is some of that in The Outer Worlds, but not to a large extent. I do like the controls and game play itself. The game isn't filled with bugs and your companions aren't as frustrating as they can be in Fallout. You do have more control over their aggressiveness and they are actually helpful in a fight. The skills you choose to excel in play a very important role. There are some things you simply cannot do if you aren't skilled enough. For example, you aren't going to be able to complete certain tasks if your skills of persuasion are lacking. Or your mission is going to be more difficult if you are poor at hacking. I love that the game has consequences for you shortcomings. Supernova mode is worth a try, as well. It definitely makes the game tougher, as it's supposed to do. You will have to make sure you eat, sleep, and drink. You can also be wounded with limb damage or concussions. Concussions will make you dumber until you sleep it off. Otherwise, your intelligence and dialogue will be affected. These are just a few things I love about the game. I could go on. But, if you love Fallout type games, I would recommend this one as well.

I'm a completest and like to do side quests. I enjoyed the story in the game very much as well as the combat. However, I feel that the non-action type quests were too prevalent, especially considering the long load times. Felt like I spent 75% of the game going from locale to locale, watching load screens, w/o much of any combat action. Gets a little boring but overall still really enjoyed the game despite it perhaps being a little overhyped.

Initially, I was on the fence about The Outer Worlds ever since it was shown at E3 2019. It looked decent but I was more anxious for some other games. Now, I can say that The Outer Worlds is one of my favorite games this gen! And it shows us that the original Fallout creators know how to make an engaging RPG. I won't go into spoilers but in short, you are thawed from cryo-sleep and need to save the rest of the sleeping crew. Your character travels to different planets and gets into some very fun and tongue in cheek situations. That's what makes this game so much fun. It doesn't take itself seriously. Your character will develop 'phobias' if defeated or engages with certain creatures or factions. The length of The Outer Worlds is up to the player. If you explore and do side missions etc, you're gonna have easily 30 hours with this game. If you're cut and dry, you can bang this game out in about 15-20 hours. Either way, you're not going to regret this purchase!

If Firefly was a RPG game TOW comes close

Bought this as a Christmas gift for a friend. Watching him play the game, TOW strikes me as a Fallout'esq game with bright Borderlands style colors and shades of Firefly in the story narrative. Even one of the companion characters reminds me of the Serenity's resident mechanic. How this game compares to modern iterations of Fallout and Borderlands itself I'm not sure since I haven't played those games. However the gift recipient pointed out, unlike in Fallout 3/4, TOW allows you to (for example) kill everyone in the town where you stop to get quests and penalizes your character's reputation score rather than simply not allowing the action to happen in the first place. Highly recommend saving the game first before doing this just in case. It's nice seeing a stand alone RPG that isn't monetized with micro transactions everywhere like the old days of gaming.

This game is very fun and will definitely immerse you into its world, which is full of colors and strange creatures - along with several worthwhile storylines within an overall engaging storyline. The graphics are great, but this game manages to utilize a wide range of colors like few games do. I'm not typically a big fan of first-person shooters relative to third-person, but this game makes you happy it is first-person because the FOV (field-of-view) allows more of the world to hit you as you play. The dialogue mechanics are very well done - almost like a Telltale game within an RPG action/shooter, which is a mix not often found outside Mass Effect. The bugs have been very minimal and the fun factor is off the charts. If you like BioShock, Mass Effect, and/or Borderlands, buy this game.

Yes this game borrows heavily from the Fallout series and it's set in space. Quite frankly, Obsidian should really be allowed to take over the Fallout series considering how well this game and FO: New Vegas is written. Bethesda is really ruining the FO franchise in my opinion with that travesty of FO76. But I digress. So far 10 hrs in, I am really digging The Outer Worlds which is this first person rpg/shooter/choose your own adventure game. For one, the character creator is the best I've seen in a while. The story lines and story paths are based on your choices in dialog and actions which I love; Obsidian really knows what they are doing when it comes to writing and branching story lines and not just giving everyone a safe ending regardless of choices made. The comedy in the writing is also great and not annoying or childish like BL3. I love this version of VATs supremely better vs. the FO series. I just wish you could map VATs here to L1 instead of R1. Lastly, the orchestral soundtrack is ridiculously good and I find myself humming the melodies for days after! If you love the FO series and good RPG's, show this industry that you want more games that are like this vs. Bethesda turning their franchises into random loot, action games without souls because they are greedy: yuck!

A wonderful and funny RPG where your choices really do matter. Create your character. Are you going to be the galactic super soldier or a bubbling idiot? You decide. Play the game your way. Great story, characters and lots of side quests will keep you entertained for 40 plus hours of amazing and smooth gameplay. If you like Fallout you will LOVE Outer Worlds.

Is The Outer Worlds the great return to RPGs we were all looking for? Not exactly. The game lets you invest in numerous skills and gives you a lot of ways to resolve conflict without firing a shot yourself (talking enemies down, intimidating them, hacking security systems to work for you, etc.), but some factors let it down a bit. For one thing, there are only three ammo types in the game, making it ludicrously easy to build up a huge stockpile of each type, which makes combat easier. The other point against it is the perk system isn't nearly as diverse as the one in New Vegas. Most of the perks are numbers based, boosting certain stats rather than offering up more interesting ways to play certain builds. But is this enough to say the game's bad? Absolutely not. The games got some phenomenally entertaining writing, the gameplay is still fun, and there are still a lot of potential builds to play with. Hell, I even managed to get through the entire final level on my first playthrough without firing a single shot. It's not perfect, but now that Obsidian have a new franchise of their own to work on, and hopefully a bit more money coming their way, I'm hopeful that the next game in this series will be even better.

A very unique Fallout-esq type of RPG game. The story is easy to follow. The open world is yours to explore, but there is a sort of rail system as you travel to different planets as the story progresses. Battle is nice, but with the number of items you find in the world it becomes very easy to become overburdened. Resource management at it's finest. Overall this is a great game and recommend highly

A must Buy if you like, fallout 3 or fallout new vegas. Better than fallout 4. Just fallout 4 is a long game. This games is a shooter style game but not in the call of duty or modern warfare style. Dont expect an arcade or run and gun nonsense here. The story choices you make and quests you complete affect how well you do in the game. Also, this game takes on adult subjects, like romance, family and intergalactic capetalism BUT it doesn't take it self too seriously. Or at least it gives you the option to care or not.... or whatever. Obsidian has a pretty go track record of trying to give players some options. Which is nice. When the choices actually make a significant difference. They decisions arent to major in this game. But still appreciated. The game isnt too long for a Shooter RPG, at about 30 to 40 hours. Which is good and bad. Good because it moves along at a good pace with very little grinding. But bad as the end of the game goes by very quickly.... almost rushed...but in a good cause you dont want it to end.
